I'm not into streaming and I just use wi-fi to download games and web browse, so I don't know much about this stuff. When the CenturyLink guy came to activate our internet he pretty much shit his pants and said he'd never seen anything like it. There's a panel in the laundry room with the switch and they wired a Cat8 port into every damn room (one room has two). I think there are 8 total.

These people must have really liked porn.
Termination hubs in a closet and ethernet ports are common in newer builds here. I have one, and like 2 ports per room, but they're all the typical Cat 5e/6. But no one uses 8 because... it's hard enough to use over 1 gbps with consumer equipment. So 45 gbps is just extreme.

Edit: If anything, if I were to choose, I'd get big enough AWG cables for PoE devices than to go up to Cat 8. I only run one PoE device over any distance because it's only 3 W.

Just thought I'd share that I moved into a new house last weekend and one thing I discovered is that the crazy person who lived here before me had Cat8 ethernet wired to every room in the house. I don't know why anyone would ever do that, but the good news is it will only take 5 seconds to reinstall Civ6 after I uninstall it in disgust, which happens on a weekly basis.
I used to work somewhere which, among other things, did security systems and in-home networking. We had a customer who was a typical small business tyrant, except his business was run out of his house. Oh, and he was extremely paranoid, even more so than these dudes usually are. He had every inch of his house, inside and out, covered with cameras and would call us the second any of them so much as blinked out for a second.

But yeah, he had a setup like this apparently. I never figured out what he did other than monitor his cameras. We speculated the real issue was he didn't trust his wife as he was away on business often, leaving her at home in the Truman Show. We didn't set this up for him. He'd burnt through two other IT companies by the time he got to us. And yes, after a while (too long, if you ask me) he was requested to find someone else to service his IT needs. Luckily, I only had to deal with the guy on the phone but my co-workers had to make the trip out there. I guess his network would have rivaled office buildings we'd worked on. lol

When I clicked "Fantasy Blacksmith" I had something else in mind.

Some decent games in there for $0.60 or less each.
It starts at 1 title for $1. So it would be $1 or less each, mister IAmTheMoobiestGamer.

I bought the full 10. Picklock on ITAD is the wrong version, so you may already own it even if ITAD says you don't.

Just mentioning Tempest is near poop to me. I actually played it for an hour a few years ago and it wasn't Sid Meier's Pirates the original or remake. It was just clunky, pretty bad UI, and pretty boring. I don't honestly remember the RPG part of it haha.

No one buys the 1 for $1 deal... come on, breh. I'm probably grabbing The Slater, Picklock, Town of Machine, Action Commando (these two are by the same dev and are basically the same gameplay but they look like decent isometric shooters), and was debating Tempest for the last pick. But given the above posts maybe I should go with the more Zen-like Fantasy Blacksmith.

Steam Deck

- Portable Steam PC

- Supposedly runs modern AAA games well

- Built on Zen 2 + RDNA 2

- Dock to connect to TV and use peripherals (sold separately)

- Starts at $400 for 64GB model

- Coming December 2021

Really don't know what to make of that button placement. Looks like it could be super uncomfortable but they needed room for the trackpads so it works well with non-controller games. So it's gotta be cramped to some extent.

I guess this is the official reveal of the previously rumored "steam pal"?  I'm somewhat interested in the product, but not to run demanding games (which is joke, really).  I want handheld access to my library of indie, 2d and VN games with mod support.

..And I'm not sure if the deck would be that.  The controller layout looks turrible.  A huge issue will also be storage.  $650 for the 256gb model?  Edit: apparently all versions have expandable storage via microsd.

At least the news is more interesting than today's preorders for the "new" switch sidegrade model.

In when it goes on deep clearance for $5 like the SteamLink. Which is still sitting in the box never used.
SteamLink is actually pretty great if you have a decent tv and don’t want to game on a computer. With that said, it’s possible this could flop but I think there’s a market for a well done handheld that can play PC games. I’m more optimistic for this than the Alienware UFO prototype.

Could one possibly install say Windows or Linux on this Steam Deck (right along-side of say SteamOS, for a dual-boot)?

This could be pretty cool, for older games for those platforms I just mentioned - to put say GOG games; Epic Games; and any other games from any store you own on Windows or Linux.

64GB space won't do much for anyone. Top-tier for 512GB seems like the logical place, that way.

Good thing it was some ports (i.e. USB 3.1, USB-C) - as you could probably expand-out that way.

yea you can install whatever you want on there. SteamOS is just a UI sitting on top of (1-2.0 debian, now the new 3.0 is based on arch linux). You have always been able to install whatever you want on any steamOS box since its completely open and the same with this, they even showed it off running in desktop mode. They did also mention you are free to install windows on it if you want too, but I imagine its probably not nearly as nice and you'd just want to boot it up into steam bigpic-deck mode anyway.

It also has microsd slots so you can buy a cheap 512gb and slap it in there and done if you dont care about the nvme speed

I've watched a few of the videos on it.  Are you able to install any of your library games on it or just specially optimized games for it?  If so, I think I'll get one at launch and play FIFA, F1, Football Manager, and some other titles on it.

You can install anything, how well its going to run is another story

valve has made huge leaps with their help on wine for getting games running better on it, can just check https://www.protondb.com/ to see how things run if there isnt a native linux version. FIFA is straight out just because it requires origin, so unless origin can also run via proton in the background on linux and somehow not have issues with any DRM they have, its going to be iffy. Football manager runs perfectly, and most of the F1 games do as well (does depend on what year though)

People were crapping on the touch pads.  Apparently, those people have never played a PC game that required mouse control.

But the fact is that Steam key bundles are in most cases cheaper than buying digital console games, so the Steam Deck will be a huge win.

Thanks for the link.

I think EA sells stuff on Steam now so instead of buying from Origin this year, I'd just buy on Steam if I can play it via this.

You'd likely still encounter the same problem of requiring Origin. EA games on Steam still require Origin to play.

The IGN interview confirmed you can access other libraries such as Epic or Gamepass Ultimate. This could definitely replace my Switch Lite. I'm worried about the "reservation" though. Realistically we're paying $5 to maybe get one in December, or next Summer.

It’s basically a portable pc … you can do most things you can do with a pc. I might actually grab one for the novelty of it, I like the concept. Hopefully the build quality is good.

Why the FINAL FANTASY pixel remaster series is the greatest way to play the classics

It does look A LOT better. Everything except the font of course.
Skimmed the article, and I’m really just seeing a bunch of sales BS. I’m not saying these won’t be the best ways to play any of these games, at least not till I’ve seen reactions from people who aren’t Square employees, but that whole wall of text is just meaningless jargon trying to push a product.

For what it’s worth, I still think the PS1 and GBA versions of 1 and 2 look better than the screenshots they’re showcasing here. Nicer sprites and combat backgrounds, anyway.

Is there any real, tangible reason to get anything but the cheapest version of the Steam Deck? Performance is identical, no matter the size of internal storage you choose and there's the option for expanded memory cards or a USB-C drive. The only real difference, however vague it seems, is the bullet point on the $649 version:

"Premium anti-glare etched glass"

To which I'd retort, "I'll just get a screen protector, anyway... so there."

Its really just the storage, though they dont say which version of emmc they went with so it could range from so bad you want to throw it in the trash emmc speed, up to equivalent to a sata ssd speed which is just fine, would have been really nice of them to post actual transfer speeds so everyone could know. That and an SD card will be slow if you go with the standard UHS-I's which are just 90MB/s read, so like half the speed of a spinning disk (and 30MB/s write but at least thats just a one time thing for downloads)

I keep going back and forth on which model too, cause I think the same, ehh its a one time download and I can slap a 60$ 512 sd card in there and be good

I suspect the "several hours" of gameplay you get with AAA titles will be with the screen dimmed to 20% in a dark room. Also, the chip is made by AMD so it's probably going to eventually be too hot to hold.

I agree with those thoughts and ultimately don't really think so. Yes, you'd get faster speeds with the pci-e storage. But my view is that any game that will have an actual discernable difference in storage performance is going to be a demanding game. And expecting to play a demanding game the handheld will be a bad time in other ways much more significant than load times.

I’m inclined to go with the mid-tier model, assuming it gets to enhanced screen protection and has an SSD … seems like the best option unless the top of the line model has additional boosts to the internals.

The $650 model is the one with the glass screen. I'm guessing the low/mid tiers have plastic screens

If the claims that they all perform the same, no matter storage size (Perhaps, through way of an added Steam Deck profile, on a per game basis for optimum performance, as I seriously doubt Valve would intentionally cripple one flavor over another) I'm grabbing the cheapest, since this will only be portable in the sense that I'll use it while I'm on the shitter or lying in bed at night.

Using the Steam Deck while sitting on the toilet could potentially give new meaning to the term 'upper decker'.

I can count on one hand the number of games I use a controller to play on PC... not seeing the mass appeal on this one.
I can count on one hand of the worst shop teacher ever the number of games I used a controller to play on PC... I don't think I've ever used a controller for a PC game.

I use them for Dark Souls and the like. Also the occasional platformer I play. Seems like a lot of people are excited about the portability of this device but II really don't play games anywhere other than my home... but maybe I'm just an old geezer in that respect and everyone plays games on public transportation or while taking a dump.

I can't do the type of digital hoarding that I want with only 64 gb. I need to have at least 100 games installed at once...just in case I want to try one instead of playing the same five that I always play when I'm on Steam.
