Do you think Mortal Kombat is better than Street Fighter?

SF3 vs. MK:Armageddon.

Lets see...MK had 7 years to catch up...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand fail!

In general, Street Fighter.

On XBLA- I pick UMK3 over SF2:T.

UMK3 has better online matches and more people playing. SF2:T online is somewhat laggy and everyone is so damn good on there.. if anyone is playing.

Now if Capcom releases SSF2:T or street fighter alpha 3 for the arcade, that opinion will change.

def street fighter...without the fatalities, MK would have no appeal to me...without the supers in SF, it would still be a great fighting game with a great fighting engine

I like the MK series, but if it came down to SF or MK as the only fighter I could ever play again, it would be Street Fighter hands down.

Street Fighter all the way. They were both great series back in the day but Street Fighter seems to have aged better. I'd love to see Alpha/Zero 2 on XBLA.

it is call SF Anniversary and it is already on live

i know that, but SF Ann is not backwards compatible on the 360

Although I only played SF2 Special Champion Edition on the genesis and MK1, and MK Trilogy on the N64, I have to say Street Fighter, it is a deeper game where MK is more about blood and gore, SF is about the fighting moreso than MK.

Street Fighter for me. I always liked the "fluid" motion of most of Capcom's special moves, vs. the jittery forward forward back back down down forward down back punch crap.

Agred. SF always just felt better to play.

legalese FTW

man how the hell did some ppl write-in vote for KOF/SNK???

those games are hot for a minute,

then you go back to playing street fighter rite after that.

fuck a mortal kombat

Mortal Kombat. Street Fighter is for the 12 year old boys during the day, Mortal Kombat is for the adults at night. Although maybe I am saying this because the last 2 versions of each game I've played have been on the 360, and SF2's 360 port sucks, while UMK3's port was excellent. I still prefer Mortal Kombat. Way better first movie too.

i kind of figured MK's fanbase to be more adolescent than adult

and vice versa for SF

 right on the nose. "OMG d00d I just punched his head off lolz111"

SF has much deeper gameplay. No contest that SF is better than MK and I say this even though I was terrible at Street Fighter.

wow it's like 1994 in here!

My personal favorite fighting game is Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. However if you consider both franchises as a whole, Street Fighter is much stronger. The gameplay throughout the rest of the MK series doesn't really hold up IMO, whereas Street Fighter has basically had top-notch quality throughout the series. It's pretty amazing that you have three different arms of the series still represented in tournament play (Super Turbo, Third Strike, Alpha 3). You sure don't see anyone playing MK1 or MK4 at any of the big fighting game gatherings.

UGH, Mortal Kombat is kinda cool... if you never grew out of that adolesent goth phase. Not to mention the game is completely unbalanced, and it visually looks like a Van Damme movie. In my opinion, MK is terrible, always has been, I just was caught up in the hype.

Street Fighter on the other hand is a classic.

In my humble opinion:

1) Street Fighter series
2) Other Capcom 2D series (mvc2, cvs2, etc)
3) Guilty Gear series
4) KoF/SNK series
5) Mortal Kombat series

I think Mortal Kombat is fun, but its not a 'serious' fighter than you can study for years and master. Theres a reason people are still having SFII tournaments 15 years later.

I dont have enough experience with some of the lesser known 2D fighters to give an opinion on them, Ive played Melty Blood like twice in the arcade.

I love both series but the edge goes to Street Fighter. It just has deeper gameplay and more balanced characters. Plus, I've always been a huge fan of the pixel art characters intead of the digitized actor animation. Though, I do give MK its props, it is still a really fun series to play and I love the fatalities. Still, I would love for this age old question to be settled if they would made a Capcom vs Midway game. Have the best of both series finally duke it out, all in classic 2-D gameplay of course.

Everything from the way you block to the way you get juggled would be affected!

Or perhaps they could go crazy and give you radically different "-ism"s to choose from a la Capcom vs. SNK.

I was playing some Golden Axe with my buddy when his bro came down and told us to turn on MTV-- Kurt Loder said that kurt cobain just offed himself with a shotgun!

Both! Although, I prefer the original Street Fighter II to the turbos, alphas, etc and MK's before they went 3-D. When I was tween there was nothing better than attempting to cut a diamond with your hand on the MK's "Challenge Your Might!" segments. And there was no better thrill than drop kicking a generic "Honda" in SFII before the time ran out. Oddly though, I could never really got into SNK.

Street Fighter, and not just because my name is Guile. I played my share of MK (2D versions) and while they were fun they don't hold a candle to the gameplay in the Street Fighter games.
King of Fighters FTW
seconded. I've always enjoyed each fighter for its own thing, but SNK has always made me happy, no matter how crappy their games feel.

I agree 100%.

EDIT -- Street Fighter might be my favorite 2D fighter but Virtua Fighter is my favorite fighter period.

If you like flash over substance or a fool/n00b then of course you'll say Mortal Kombat.

But Street Fighter is overall the best damn fighting series of all time. Mortal Kombat is fucking joke compared to Street Fighter.

Street Fighter all the way. If the two games were in battle, Street Fighter would win with a perfect victory over Mortal Kombat.
 the question now is which plays better in 3d?
Personally I enjoyed Street Fighter EX3 more than Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.
