Super Mario Galaxy - Gen. Discussion & Info.

Finally got a break from work to sit down with the wife and finish this game! All done with 104 stars. Loopdeeloop galaxy just isn't going to happen for me. I've come to grips with it.

I might try the purple coin galaxies without the time limits though.

Loopdeeloop is the second surfing level, right? If you're worrying about beating the record (what was it 1:30?), you don't have to. I went really slow throughout the level, and got a few seconds above the record and still got the star.

I think Loopdeswoop was the second ray level, but the idea is the same: go slow as fucking hell. I went ultra-slow on the second one, and missed the record only by a couple of seconds.
I think Loopdeswoop was the second ray level
Well, sorry. And, surfing = ray, since it's ray surfing and all. ;)

I'm amazed at all the problems with the surfing. I think I beat both levels by about 28 seconds. Right around the 1 minute mark on the first try.

Like posted, you can probably go pretty slow and still make it.

Yep, have to go super slow.

I still had problems because of the big ass waves randomly knocking me off course, and then I'd over steer (hate tilt steering controls!) and careen of the side even at low speeds.

But finishing in time to get the star isn't an issue at all, as long as you get to the end, you'll get it as the time is very generous. Just a matter of surviving the waves and controls (if you suck at them like I do!).

Notably, I once fell off the course and landed right at the finish line. However, I panicked and died despite having skipped half the course. I finished it the normal way several tries later, only a couple of seconds behind the record time. And I was going dog-fucking-slow for most of it.

I too thought the first one was a breeze, but this second one is killing me. I'll try it again when I get home and go as slow as possivble lol I'll report back with the news!

No problems with any of the surfing, ball rolling, etc. May have been my favorite parts of the entire game. I loved the green star trials.

Beat the game last night with 104 stars going into the last battle. Only played a few of the purple coin levels so far, though I'm already dreading the Luigi level.
My interest in this game seems to be dwindling and I don't know why... I generally like platformers and I love Mario but I haven't been able to get into this yet. Granted, I'm only at about 25 stars... maybe I've played too many platformers or something and I can't get excited.
OK, I picked this up after a 2 week layoff since I can't play Half-Life 2, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect or CoD4 in front of the kids... I'm up to 40 stars and I am in love again. Every single level is wildly different and has something new to do - it's really brilliant. I'm still not getting the feeling like "I need to play this game non-stop because of it's awesomeness" but I am having a blast every time I turn it on.

That is exactly how I feel about it. I took about a 2 week break from SMG during the holidays and I was at about 75 stars at the time. I am now up to 107 (beat the game as well) and it is just so much fun each time I play.

I finished up yesterday, finally, all 120 stars. I opened up Luigi. I am not sure if I'm going to keep playing or not. Part of me has really enjoyed the game (very few games do I ever finish in their entirety). Part of me is not sure if I really want to go through it a second time with Luigi right now though. But, since I'm trying not to buy many new games in the next couple of months, I might start it up at least.

As for the loop de loop galaxy, ride the slow button (I believe it's A). It brings you to a stop, and just go extremely slow through it. It's doable (while going for the record, I fell off about 10-15 times). I finally gave up, and just wanted to get through it. I finished about 5 seconds off the record, and they gave me the star. I would suggest giving it another 5 tries, just doing that. I think you can do it.

Also, the purple star time runs (for the most part) aren't that bad. I have to be honest, I was very leery of them. I figured they would stop me from getting to 120. But, for the most part, the time is rather short (one is only 1 minute, and the rest are 2-3:30 seconds). I think all are immensely doable. Most have 150, so you can get through most of them with minimal issues. I really only had serious problems on one of them (the Luigi board), and after reading some stuff at Gamefaqs, I was able to get through it.

Well the wife got called into work until 7 and I get off at 2 so I'm gonna do it. I thought you had to beat the record to get the star so I always quit after dieing 80 times. But now that I know different, I'll try again!

I still am sitting at like 90-95 stars and my ferocoius addiction to MassEffect isnt letting me either.

Poor princess is probably getting sodomized by bowser as we speak.

My fiance made me take down my Mario Galaxy coin display. She said it was dorky and I thought that was pretty rude.
My fiance made me take down my Mario Galaxy coin display. She said it was dorky and I thought that was pretty rude.
My wife proudly set it atop our DVD collection next to the Optimus Prime transforming DVD from Target. But she's as dorky as I am so I guess that doesn't help much.

Wow kids! Reading is fun! I always just sped through what the penguin was saying at the beginning - you know the part where he clearly says you've got 3 minutes to run the course. So yeah took 2 minutes but I got the frickin star all 105 now!

On to the purple coins!

EDIT: 110 down 10 to go! Not all of the purple coins are annoying (but many are) but they're really not all that fun either to be honest.

I'm sure this has been covered, but I've noticed something odd with this game.

No matter how many extra lives I've got stored up, whenever I save my game and resume playing some other time, I'm back at 4. Does anyone have any idea why this is? I've gone from 25+ lives back to 4 every single time.

i'm pretty sure that was the same thing in mario 64. its all just something with the saves. nothing you can do about it, i believe.

I must admit that this has brought my Wii gaming back to life. I haven't played through a whole Wii game since Metroid Prime 3, so its about time. I haven't even completed Zelda yet but it seems as though I could finish Galaxy this weekend.

I've experienced the same thing as the above two posts (4 lives to start off with regardless of how many I had the previous time i played) and that this game was sort of an "island" of wii playing for me. I havent been playing it much recently besides Galaxy, and even that I havent played in a long while.

For all the "I only start with 4 lives" posts, I reference you to the bottom of page 8 of your manual.

So, I'm shelving the game. I think it's fantastic, it's a great system seller along side of Metroid 3 and the like, but, I just don't have the time to run through the purple coin levels for a marginal (I said it) payoff. I got up to 110 stars. After dying midway through some of the purple coin runs, my patience is gone. To Ebay it goes. I wish thee well, dear Mario.

48 stars and counting. I'm having a blast but some of these stars are going to be frustrating - I tried doing the one hit rock monster swing the black ghosts star and it's tough just for the sake of being tough... I can't resisit though.

Smirky von Smirk Smirk: Yes, it's generally seen as the hardest level.

Javery: I found the trick to that one was just to get good at shooting the rocks down. I'd generally ignore the ones that held the black boos, though.

Nice, and that didn't take me THAT long to get. I AM YOUR MARIO GOD!

Javeryh, I found using 2 boos at once really helped to speed things up.

I feel your pain sir. That battle is frustrating as all hell, but I was able to beat it a few days ago after surrendering sometime last week. Just keep trying.

Of the Daredevil comets, I had a much harder time with the Melty Molten daredevil run than the Bouldergeist, which I got on the second try. Melty Molten I probably did 50 bajillion.

Melty Molten took me forever as well. Much longer than Bouldergeist or Luigi's Purple coins. I swear, I was on Molten for almost an hour trying to beat the damn coins.

Yep, that was one of the ones I had some trouble with. Luckily, it might be the most awe-inspiring level in the entire game. The jump star out of the volcano, followed by skimming along the molten lava is worth the price of the game,
Best game on the Wii, best game this generation period.
Wow, that is quite an ignorant statement. If this game had a random character instead of Mario, it would not be the "second best game ever made". This game is just another average platformer.

Wow, that is quite an ignorant statement. ;)

I don't think this is the best game ever made by any stretch (though I'm loving it so far) but it's not that big of a stretch to say it's probably the best Wii game at the moment. Plus, as a HUGE platforming fan, I feel comfortable saying SMG is unquestionably above average - Mario license or not.

The big problem I have with this is it's so damn easy. Besides that, the levels I do have trouble with are not because of genuine difficulty, but either an error on my part or just a level with unobvious hazards. Freezeflame pruple coins pissed me off so much because I fell of that slope that seperates the bottom part and the "secret" top part. I thought jumping on that part of the slope would go down, like most of the other parts. Then I see Mario sliding down and I have to do the whole damn level again.

And on the one level that does have genuine difficulty,
the Daredevil Bouldergeist, it's very unexpected because the rest of the game is a cakewalk. And even that just takes some practice. I will say there were shines in SMS that were difficult just to be difficult (Yoshi across water) but at least a good part of the game was challenging without being insane.

Agreed. It's among the best 3D platformers I've played. Probably just a bit behind the first couple of Ratchet and Clank games for me (haven't played any of the later R&C games).

But 3D platformers will never touch the gaming goodness of 2D platformers like Super Mario World and SMB3 though! :D

I think the same could (almost) be said for Sunshine. Had Mario not been the star of Sunshine, I think the game would have been held in higher acclaim that it usually is. The main line of Mario games is typically held in higher acclaim just because Mario is in it. That doesn't make the game any better, consumers just have a higher standard when "Mario" is in the title.
The big problem I have with this is it's so damn easy.
I agree, but I don't think Galaxy is the only game at fault. I feel like compared with the NES/SNES days of gamings the difficulty has come down drastically in almost every game. Maybe the market has changed, maybe I'm playing the wrong kinds of games, maybe my skills are more refined -- I don't know, but as complex as games are these days they just don't feel "as hard" anymore.

That doesn't mean I don't enjoy what I play, but it almost feels like there's no reward for hard work anymore.

I grew up a little later than the NES and SNES and SMG is still a cakewalk. I can't belive anybody could think this is hard. I don't get why some games are just flat out ballbusters, but a challenge with a reward and a difficulty that is achievable I think would be much better. Games that throw stuff at you just to get you to loose is more fitting for an arcade game (so the owner gets more quarters) than a home console game.

NES/SNES/Genesis games were hard by necessity. It compensated for their relative shortness and the fact that we, as children between the ages of 5 and 10, generally could not afford many games.

Yep.

I'm grateful for the change personally. I have no patience for hard games. I like a little challenge, but I don't have the patience anymore to do a boss battle over 20 times etc.

Hopefully, it's not just me but several of those
daredevil runs ala bouldergeist
were a pure pain in the ass

Sure it wasn't anything like having only 5 lives to beat smb or 3 to beat sonic, but it was still a challenge

I realize the technology itself almost mandated a higher level of difficulty in some games; no saves, higher difficulty levels to enforce longer playing times, it all adds up. With saves becoming more common, games are becoming progressively "easier" since you can store your progress up to a certain point.

But I guess I enjoy a different kind of difficulty. Not the "boss has 1,000,000 hit points" kind of difficulty, but the kind of difficulty that presents a challenge of the thinking or skill kind. I just get so irritated at games which are difficult just to piss you off. Maybe this is why I love Smash Bros. and Zelda so much.

Mario Galaxy itself has its own charm while still remaining relatively easy, save for a few stars on a few certain galaxies. But it still maintains a relatively good balance which allows anyone to pick it up; which seems to the case with almost any Mario game.

Yep, I love games like Zelda where the challenge is in solving puzzles, figuring out how to beat the bosses etc.

Not in dodging a zillion attacks that kill you in two hits while you have to hit the boss a 1,000 times to kill it.

I just finished - 60 stars in probably 5 or 6 sittings. Credis are rolling now but I assume I can just keep going for the 120...
