Super Mario Galaxy - Gen. Discussion & Info.

I was at a buddy's last night and saw the really really nice Twilight PRincess guide with the cloth map. It was awesome. I dont usually get guides but Twilight Princess and possibly Galaxy may be the exception. I make sure not to look at them until after I've beaten that part of the game.

Unfortunately I caught a glimps of the
ball and chain in TP
before I got it and was really pissed about the spoiler.

Its getting harder and harder to keep things secret for myself regarding videogames because of previews, reveiws, and general chit chatting about. THis, coupled with the psychological impossibility of not clicking on the spoiler button make it tough. I can't resist.

That's one of the downfalls of the internet providing everything on the whim. I kind of miss the days where your only source of information was the good gaming magazines that would keep us salivating from month to month. It was a lot easier to not spoil yourself since information was somewhat more limited.

At the same time though, it's been very hard for me to avoid information. I've unfortunately been spoiled to a few power ups thanks to a few sites displaying them on their front page. There's really no good way to avoid things these days unless you just ignore the internet completely. Even if you avoid the news/videos/reviews/previews of the game, somewhere, someone is bound to ruin it for you.

I still must admit, I'm kind of disappointed with Nintendo's marketing campaign. Yeah sure, it's Mario. But heck, it's Mario! This is your flagship product Nintendo, you should be flaunting it like there's nothing to it. I may hate Microsoft, but I must admit at least they know how to advertise.

Just imagine that everytime you click on a spoiler you'll end up seeing a big sweaty naked Itallian with a butt plug and it ought to cure your spoiler clicking habits... unless you're into that sort of thing, in which case that wouldn't help... that wouldn't help at all....

I saw this hardcover guide available for purchase at Gamestop over the weekend. It's really nice looking. I was very tempted to buy it but it was $30 which is beyond my impulse purchase threshhold..

I also got a chance to play SMG on their Wii. Aparently all the Gamestops got demo copies for their display machines. Controls were pretty nice, graphics were about what I expect from Nintendo.

I'm not a guide person, but both the Zelda and Mario ones look amazing.

The hardcore crowd will get it and Nintendo knows this. Why advertise something that will directly correlate to additional Wii sales when there is still a good chance of people not finding Wiis to begin with? That would just add to consumer frustration.

Nintendo is bad ass enough to let word of mouth do their advertising for them, its great. They make such great games that they don't NEED to advertise.

Still, it would be nice to see some commercials on TV about Galaxy; even if it is motivated more out of benevolence to their supporters than business necessity. True, they are in the "for profit" industry, though thier actions regarding the Wii Remote condoms made me wonder.

I know Mario will sell well, because who doesn't like Mario? It just bugs me slightly that they can't at least advertise for their flagship product. I guess I'm just tired of the old "Wii would like to play..." commercials and feel like they do little to show of their products.

In any case, I'm so hyped on this I can hardly wait. It's hard to believe that in only a weeks time I will have this in my hands. I know Zelda was hyped to high heaven, but for some reason I was worried that it wouldn't live up to it's hype. But Mario on the other hand, I have no doubt that this game WILL live up to the hype, and be the most amazing game we've seen in years.
Here we have a couple pics of the Collector's Edition guide. Not sure how I feel about it for my $18.80. Not a huge fan of the slipcover since it'll get ripped up too easily (probably need to stow it somewhere), hopefully there's something remotely nice-looking on the hardcover.

First REAL must have game on the Wii. I'm so buying this on day one. I should've taken time off from work to enjoy it, too. Bah.

Metroid Prime 3 is calling you a bitch right now.

And even now.

Like it's doing it again and again and again.

Don't argue. There is no argument to be had.

Eurogamer:

"Less successful are the rarer one-off modes, which see you doing things like steering a jet-ski-like ray fish by tilting the controller left and right. These come perilously close to feeling tacked on, and add little compared to simply steering with the analogue stick."

"These mild annoyances with the control are the worst of the small niggles that let Galaxy down. With the health power meter now reduced from six sections to three, experimenting with new enemies and tactics can be a little fraught - try the wrong thing twice in a row and you're in immediately danger of dying.

"More disappointing is the lack of a strong sense of identity. [While] many individual levels are dazzling . . . overall the game can feel a bit fragmented. The starship in particular doesn't offer the kind of playground freedom that you want in a Mario hub area - you're never going to feel like it's home."

"That slight incoherence is also evident when the balance starts to tip a little too close to adventure game and a little too far from platformer.

"The extra costumes and cap equivalents also feel a little flimsy in their implementation - no matter how adorable Mario's fat little bee booty is, these elements just don't feel well integrated into the main game.
"[A]longside the brilliance of some stars are others which fall a bit flat, and there isn't the overall sense of implacable perfection that [Mario 64] had."

A great review, but I think they pulled the "10" out of their asses to get people to "shut up and read the review". Can't say I blame them.

I pre-ordered the guide yesterday. I notified Amazon of it being called "Paperback" when it's actually hardcover.

Just what we need, a compelling storyline in a Mario game. Now that I think of it, it is the storyline that made Super Mario Brothers, Mario Bros 2, Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, and Super Mario 64 amazing games. Gameplay isn't nearly as important as the story. Sonic for the 360 taught me that.

As in Mario 64, all of the worlds hold multiple Stars. But in this game, you won’t find yourself retracing the same steps to reach your goal. Each Star leads you down a unique path, featuring its own challenges and gameplay. This makes for a massive game. There are some repeated goals, but most of the content will make you say, “That was one of the coolest platforming sequences I’ve ever done.”

I just jizmed.

I'm seriously considering skipping out on eating for a few days in order to get this.

Call of Duty 4 will win their GOTM for that issue because of dual 10s, for the record.
Seriously? Wow.

So how likely is it that TRU will have this on Monday? I will go right ahead and take a sick day if I know I can go over there mid-day, pick it up, and sit down to play it for a few hours.

Probably can assume that CoD4 and Galaxy are gonna be in the same issue.. so yeah. They gave CoD4 dual 10s, and Galaxy dual 9.75s. Meh.

I'm wondering if some stores don't already have this. I went in to Gamecrazy and they had the full game up on their demo Wii. Now maybe that was just a single advance copy. But it seems likely Nintendo would pre-ship this puppy and have it available in stores Monday AM.

I played it for about 1 minute - running around a peanut-shaped world. Control seems very nice!

I'm going to dress up like Reggie and go kick some ass to get a copy tomorrow.

If that fails, I'm going to dress up as Powdered Toast Man......dressing up as Reggie.

The ass will kick itself.
So does this mean that the release day is actually the 12th and not the ship date?
That's very possible. TRU's getting a 10 AM phone call from me on Monday.

I was at the Nintendo World Store yesterday and they had Super Mario Galaxy available on their first floor Wii demo units. Got to mess around with it for a few minutes and was blown away. If the rest of it is as imaginative and fun as what little I got to play, this is easily the must-have game for the rest of the year, and also the single best Wii game to date.

Ack! I just promised the wife I wouldn't buy any nw video games until after the holidays because she never knows what to get me! Stupid stupid stupid!!!!

I had a tiff with the wifey the day before yesterday so promised not to touch my 360 or Wii all day yesterday. It sucked, dancing with the stars sucks. I didn't really realize how addicted I was to vid. games. It was esp. hard since I just picked up Splinter Cell double agent on the cheap.

I cheated after she fell asleep and did the training missions.

Lesson learned: Be careful when making promises about vid. games. She deserved it though.

Wow I'm going to consider it blessed that I can't get my wife to put down Phatom Hourglass

hehe same here my girl sits there and plays touch detective and java games half the evening anyway so me gaming is ok with her :). I"m stoked about this game though I haven't been this excited about a mario game in years!

ahhh I didn't realize that game was that big in Japan. Kind of a moot point with the way Wii sales are there though Nintendos going to kind of crush everyone in japan and likely in the US as well.

They just don't seem to care.

Its an american company with a lot of western developers. Most of Japan just dosen't care for that I don't think and it just makes it harder to fix the issue since if the japanese won't buy it then they can't get eastern developers to make games for it. I"m digressing though we should stick to the topic were on.

Did anyone pick this up early? The only photo out there of a receipt showed that one of the BBs that broke the street date was in Indiana. I'm wondering how many other midwest retailers have boxes of SMG waiting for the shelves...

How can I suggest to a local BB that they break the date? I'm thinking I'll have an agent of dothog sprinkle a little powdered sugar near the entrance, then I'll show up with my "Anthrax Inspector" hat on, clear the building, find inventory, and procure my copy.

C'mon, simulated terrorism that gets me a copy of SMG early is funny. Have a sense of humor.
I just played it at a GS for about 15 minutes. This game is dripping with fun and style...
I promised myself I would not look at it... but it was on in Gamestop a few old men were playing 60+ and I just had to look. I think they are regulars though as the employees were hanging with them..

The game looks really good.... I just dont even have the time for one system....

I am looking forward to the boss fights in this game more than anything else. That and just general exploration/farting around.

If I can get wifey to play using the other wiimot to stun enemies for more than a half hour total, i'll consider that aspect of the game a success, even though it is just an afterthought.
