Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Gen. Discussion & Info

Luigi's Mansion level on the Dojo today, I had seen videos of the level before showing it get destroyed, but I had no idea it could rebuild itself.

I think it may be haunted...

From what I played over at Dr. Mario Karts house, Brawl largely the same as Melee, just with a SHIT TON of characters. My favorite new character was Wolf, he's like a beefier Fox with a small trade-off in speed. The pictochat and Metal Gear stages were the ones that stood out the most; oh yeah, the Metroid lava stage was way cool too. The game is a little more "casual" than Melee, it's certainly not as hard to play (I noticed that within the first few minutes.) Take that as you will.
I wonder how well the Thrustmaster works with Smash Bros? I do have some Gamecube controllers but none are wireless. I never invested in the WaveBird either... I like rumble.

If any of you guys read anything about it, let me know.
it works great. alot better then the wii remote and nuncxhuck.

Ugh, that level was awful. Bowser took up a quarter of the whole stage...

I also take it as yet another reason to hate all of the CAGs in the Austin area. Which, as far as I can tell, is about half of the entire website.

I would lean closer to 90%.

I wanted to go to DMK's to play it, but the weather conspired against me in a most mischievous way.

There's still a chance I might make the trip. Maybe.
Or better yet, you could stay home and play SC. The way-too-close game with Kyo the other night has me itching to 1v1 you.
If this thread should be rolled into the main Super Smash Bros thread then no worries. I just thought it'd be worth creating a new thread to increase awareness and have a strong CAG showing across the nation. :)
I know we’ve talked about this already, but now we have a picture for proof. It looks like most locations should be holding midnight releases. You can also get info on the tournaments via the link provided on the sheet. Thanks to WiiKraken for the heads up!
The link provided in the flyer does list the participating GameStops, but it should work soon.

I'll be sure to call my local GSs in the next few days and see which ones are participating.

Smash tourney coming from Gamestop.com

from gonintendo

brawlshei9.jpg

Round 1: Midnight Launch, March 8th, 2008
Round 2: District finals, March 15th, 2008
Round 3: Regional Finals, March 29th, 2008
Round 4: Grand finals, April 12th, 2008

I wonder if you have to buy the game there to play?
Gamestop.com/Smash has neither locations or details. BOO
give it time, you are just lucky your arent in my area

Wow nice I hope the GS near me will be doing midnight release and tournament though I'm not sure if I'd win since most likely they'll have you play via wiimote and nunchuk, but maybe we'll be lucky and they'll set it up with GC controllers either way it'll be nice to be in a tournament.

Nice prizes...

When I went to pre-order from GS (had a gift card I got from Christmas) there was a sign up sheet for Brawl. This was on Saturday, they didn't have that flyer yet. The guy was saying he wanted to see how many people wanted to sign up, and if enough people signed up they would do a tournament on the 8th.

He didn't mention anything about midnight, just that he would see what the best time would be for the people who signed up and do it then. He also said that there would be more tournaments and it would be ending up in San Francisco (so have to guess that would be where the finals would be). Thing is he didn't mention anything about prizes.

This was the second gamestop in the Arundel Mall of MD if you enter through Best Buy and go to the left side.

Meh, my local gamestop probably wont. Its in a rural area and they have never done anything fancy. There was a midnight release for the Wii, but that was it. Hopefully it will be the same for SSBB!

Yea mines did that too here in philadelphia I joined because heck its free I'm not that good at smash so im tryin to get a bit better before the tourney. Anyone got any tips on who i should play and like general game play? Talk to me like im a noob to the game hehe thanks in advance

Thank for the heads up, folks! It appears that, although the Anaheim store's not on the list, Anaheim Hills is...but that's too far out. Fortunately, both Brea GS's are having tourney. Guess I'll go pre-order/sign up at the store off of Associated.

"We're there, dude."
Can anyone tell me if l-cancelling is out or not?
Or stuff like wavedashing and all of those other fancy techniques that normal people like me never learned?;) Usually I play games to have fun, not to make it a chore. But if you have the patience to learn that stuff more power to you.

L-Canceling is absolutely out. Your recovery lag is based on where in the attack animation the character is in when he hits the ground. If the attack is completed, its like you never attacked and you have the normal landing animation.

People dislike l-cancelling? It's, like... the least advanced advanced technique there is. It's hitting one button at the right time. And unlike wavedashing, it's not just fucking with the physics - it was added intentionally to the N64 version as well as Melee.

Its also completely unnecessary and just adds extra inputs where there shouldnt be. But I dont want to get into that argument again. I like it better gone.

I'm not mourning the loss by any means, but it always seemed like an incredibly simple thing to do. Maybe it's because I always used floatier characters and didn't do shorthops or whatever the hell they're called.

I suspect part of the reasoning behind the removal is that it wasn't intuitive, even while it was an intended move in the game. It's something that I'm sure I wouldn't have found out on my own unless I stumbled upon it by accident, or looked it up somewhere.
The GS in the super ghetto area is doing it.

I might get shot if I beat someone the wrong way.
Let the Wookiee win.

Thanks a lot Nintendo.

IGN: Brawl seems like the perfect game to introduce a Wii headset for voice chat. Why have you avoided this?

Masahiro Sakurai: Well, when I first started making Smash Bros. Brawl, I thought it would be wonderful if online battles between friends had voice chat and potentially keyboard based chat as well. But there are all sorts of rules and regulations regarding communication on the Wii platform and so it was apparent to me that it just wouldn't come together, we weren't going to be able to do it, so we decided to cancel that feature. I'm very sorry about that. But if you're really desperate for it, you could set up Skype by your game station and go at it with a friend if you like.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/853/853748p1.html

Sakurai isn't as funny as he appears to be in the DOJO. He's super serious.

If they get the online bugs worked out with Mario Kart, then they might release an "updated" Brawl in a year or two with a few more characters (come on, Megaman!), better online play, and chat. That's what I would do if I were Nintendo, especially if they are planning to do a "Wii Lite" release in a couple of years (earphone jack in the controller--just like the prototype GameHandler peripheral back in the NES days).

On the gamestop.com/smash site on the bottom it has this on it..

No purchase necessary to enter or win. Open to legal residents of the United States and District of Columbia who are 13 years of age or older.

So most likely there'll be a sign sheet at the gamestop where you sign up for the tourny or something luckily one of the gamestops in my area is on the list so I'll go check them out a few weeks before the release date hopefully they know something about it.

I'm pretty excited haven't fought anyone in a year. :bouncy:

That seems like a plausible argument. I for one didn't mind l-cancelling, but learning it at first wasn't 100% intuitive, which I believe the Wii is all about. Or at least seems like to me. Then again, someone could argue Brawl is a GC game at heart. Meh, oh well, what's done is done.

This'll definitely broaden the Smash community, and less likly scare off people with non-intuitive techniques. Though I don't know about the competitive community. I would predict it will be saturated with self acclaimed professionals.
Confirmed out
My demand for this game just increased three-fold. Next you'll be telling me they just fold Knuckles as the super-secret final secret character.

If that were to be true, I think I would go into shock.

On a side-note; how does Sonic play? As in, what tier is he and if anyone can, give me the pros & cons of using him, that would be grand.
The GS in the super ghetto area is doing it.

This reminds me of the old Melee torny's we would hold. A fight broke out at every single one. The last one we had? Turned into an actual, real life melee. How come we don't have these tornys now? Cause Naruto is all the fucking rage.
IGN: Why can't players in random online matches communicate or even see each other's names? What's the philosophy behind that?

Masahiro Sakurai: When thinking about this game and when realizing that we were going to do Wi-Fi, we had to think a lot about the whole idea of communication over the Internet. When we were doing this, one of the things that we paid a lot of attention to is the fact that there are a lot of unpleasant experiences to be had out there, be that being insulted over the Internet or that sort of thing. You know, it's one thing if you're used to it and you're playing a first-person shooter online with 16 people and you know these guys and you're trading insults back and forth and yelling at each other, that's all well and good. But when you've got new players, and one thing I've aimed to do is to really bring new players into the fold, if this is their first online experience I want it to be a pleasant one. I want to dodge and avoid those kinds of situations that could make the whole experience online psychologically damaging or unpleasant, so that's one of the reasons we've decided not to include that feature.
I can't say I really agree with him on this one. Nintendo just doesn't get it, and I'm not sure if they ever will. If their efforts of online gaming continue being this half-assed for years to come, they will eventually get left behind.

Has anyone stopped by GameStop to see what the requirements are for the tourney? Is there a sign-up list for each location?

When I went to preorder Brawl @ the Brea Associated GS, I asked the associate if they were doing anything. She said she wasn't sure (but their store is on the list on Gamestop.com), but that if they were, they would call me. I didn't see any kind of sign-up, or signage. I shall have to stop by every now and then 'til I get a call...
