Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Gen. Discussion & Info
But the characters with one-hit-kill final smashes would dominate.
thats assuming you hit with it and that you manage to keep getting the smash ball

An alternate way to "build up" a final smash would be cool too, like a traditional fighting game by taking or dealing damage. Or maybe a recharge time, or 1 per life, etc. anything but making it an item...

Really starting to feel the strain from no new awesomeKirby update.

A new character announcement....something. I can haz plz?

Well, after going through and checking, all of the new characters have their special moves announced. Very few of the old characters do.

There are 9 old characters with special moves unanounced. There are 4 total characters with unanounced Final Smashes (Zelda, Zero Suit Samus, Snake, Sonic). So that is at most 13 more updates (unless we get new characters) that will be smashes/Special moves.

What is the release date? 2/10? So that's what, 46 more announcement days if it doesn't get pushed back. Some of these HAVE to start being interesting, come on.

Doesn't seem like that great an FS, but I'll have to see it in action first. I'm fairly excited to finally get to play as King Dedede.

And personally, I'm still curious about what that stopwatch item does.

WHAT?!? according to nintendo release dates, europe wont be getting brawl until next summer. thats weak nintendo. real weak.

be sure to tell me how great it is, you american gamers. *cries*
This should of been Peach's final smash, but of course with Toad instead of Waddle Dee.
Yeah, Peach's final smash is far too literal. It would've also been great if her FS involved pulling either the giant turnips from Super Mario Advance or a guaranteed deathturnip from SSBM

Geez. Not really having control over a lot of options online kind of bothers me.

Which means I'm sure it's going to piss off a lot of people.

Eh.
I like how the game replaces anyone who drops out with a CPU character.
Indeed. At least that should stop the: "Ha! I'm about to win!" "OPPONENT DISCONNECTED, GAME ENDING. KISS YOUR WIN GOODBYE *****" problem.
Geez. Not really having control over a lot of options online kind of bothers me.

I like how they just say "no worries", and act like people were actually worrying about that.

No worries, you won't be able to customize the random online games.
No worries, you won't be able to talk to the other players.
No worries, you'll only be able to play as Mario and Luigi.
I like how they just say "no worries", and act like people were actually worrying about that.
Right, right.

Because the entire SSBB population is the 6 or 7 of us that replied after the update, and within 4 hours of its unvealing, at an hour when most are tucked between various knitted threads.

Oh, I'm sure no one is bothered.

Ha, I love the CPU replacement. It's basically saying "our online options are so bad, you might as well be playing against the CPU!"

Seriously though, it's a good idea. It's just kinda funny is all.

I just hope it tells you when a player drops so you have the satisfaction of knowing if you beat bots or real players. I'm also wondering what skill level the bots would be placed at if a person drops. Mostly because you can tell a player's skill level after a short ammount of time. This is also a problem because if you fight a really bad player but then he drops and you are faced with a CPU at a much higher skill level. I hope they have something figured out.

I was going to say this was another boring update, but that part about how you unlock the secret characters is pretty cool; just more incentive to dive right into adventure mode and never stop. I wonder if that also means everyone playing Basic Brawl is going to pick the super-secret characters just to show off.

"Isn’t that simple? You don’t have to trouble with any settings. You just choose characters and stages."

Yeah... terrific.

Why the hell can't we see who we are playing against and set game settings? I swear Nintendo takes one step forward, two steps back when it comes to online play.

Well, I don't necessarily like it, but I can't say I'm surprised. It's exactly like Mario Kart DS random online. No frills, no options, just random play. *grumble*

Maybe when "Smash Bros. Forever" or whatever the next iteration comes out we'll see some good online capabilities. But I suppose that won't be until hell freezes over, or Microsoft buys out Nintendo. Whichever comes first.

But even without this mode, given the proliferation of the Internet these days, the existence of hidden characters is going to get exposed anyway.

So, this time I’m moving in the direction of not being too hung up on hidden characters.

You can earn most characters by playing through Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary. For those of you who look forward to those encounters, I recommend you clear this mode before playing Basic Brawl.

Hidden characters you say?
Hidden characters you say?
sakuri said you can unlock characters by playing adventure mode, but judging by the 15 only character screen (including zero suit samus), the unlockable characters have already been announced. so far there is 24 characters including ZSS. also, I dont think any more charcters will be announced, no matter how much people want them

I think the character selection screen they showed was the same as the one from the earlier limited hands-on demos, so I wouldn't say that these are the characters available at the start of the game. Sonic is there, but no Snake? Meta Knight is available, but not Kirby? That seems a bit odd to me. (And dammit, I want Luigi and Captain Falcon!)

And just keep in mind that this post is just about the Brawl Anyone setup. We may get more options when they talk about playing with the friends list. Also, the line about the items seems a bit odd to me:

Also, the items that are turned off in the item switch are also determined by lottery.

He used the "lottery" term when describing how the stage is chosen as well, but mentioned that you do get to vote on it. Maybe you have item preferences stored in your profile, an it randomly chooses from those?

When you have a battle mode that runs online like Basic Brawl, the problem of what to do with hidden characters arises. If one of your opponents chooses a character you haven’t unlocked yet, it will be spoiled for you immediately.

I feel this tidbit may just be the most interesting part of the update. Anyone reading this blog, would, of course, already be spoiled. So, it seems likely that we can expect some unlockable characters in the game that aren't going to be announced on the site...

Two very interesting pieces of info in this update as far as I'm concerned.

1) CPU subs in for dropped players. I actually think this is a brilliant idea, but I agree it kind of underlines the pointlessness of Nintendo's current online strategy: If you can't talk to your opponent or learn anything about them, what exactly differentiates them from just playing against the computer?

2) Hidden characters will be obtained only by playing through The Subspace Emissary. THANK GOD. That was one of the things that really irked me about the first two Smash games: Having to complete lots of difficult and not very fun tasks to unlock the hidden characters. Target practice was the bane of my existence, not to mention the sandbag. I wonder if this will apply to levels as well , or if they'll still be scattered around.

Skill level. I usually don't like to chat with people while I am playing. Most of the time, people are taunting/bitching anyway. But I can't wait to play against human players, to see how I stack up against an actual challenge. "Very Hard" CPU's in Melee just weren't a challenge.

Exactly. I don't want to listen to ten-year olds curse at me while I'm playing SSBB. Of course, I wasn't that good at Melee, so the "Very Hard" CPUs will probably still smack me down. Eh, whatever. I still like the feature.
I was going to say this was another boring update...
I've been thinking about this, and 4 color rebellion posted this bit this week:
In all seriousness, this was (for me, anyway) without a doubt the worst week of updates ever, and it’s become painfully obvious that the Dojo was originally planned with an early December release date firmly in mind. Considering the fact that there are still two months left until the game hits, we probably haven’t seen the worst yet…
They are probably very, very correct.

You are completely and utterly wrong, if only because I'm pretty damn sure the character select and stage select are entirely subject to change.

All the screens are E for All/NOT FINAL builds/INTENTIONALLY MADE LIKE THAT.

You know, like EVERY GAME OUT THERE BEFORE IT'S RELEASED.
Except maybe for a few specific characters, it wouldn't be meant for actual serious play - more just for fucking around. Which, really, sounds like the sort of thing you use the training mode for. Yay item spawn!

EDIT: And besides that, Giga Bowser Vs Steamroller Landmaster Tank would be fucking awesome.
oh doing FS vs FS for fun would be hilarious. It'd be like doing Pokeballs only on Very High. Completely pointless for normal matching but great fun. I could see a mode with Smash Balls only like we do with the pokeballs but I can't see a special mode called "Final Smash Mode".
[...].
sometimes your sarcasm is a little too subtle.
I'm also wondering what skill level the bots would be placed at if a person drops.
Something that really needs to be addressed.
So, it seems likely that we can expect some unlockable characters in the game that aren't going to be announced on the site...
That's what I'm thinking as well. I'm hoping that all the vets we're missing (Marth, Ness PLEASE) will return as unlockables as strange as that would be to experience.

As I've said before, do keep in mind that the blog was designed with an Early December release date in mind. It's over, man, it's shitty posts from here on until February.

I had forgotten about that... excuse me guys, I'll be crying in the corner if you need me... %$#& you nintendo!

Sakurai could provide a bit of solace by just doing wacky shit on the site then.

"Here's me checking my mail. Oh! It's a letter from Reggie.

....

He says he hates me and my development team.

Oh what a jokester!"

*looks into future*

hello everybody, the update for today is *smashes*. press A to do a smash! how exciting! see you tommorow,

I think we might see a good update or two in the coming months, but you're right. It's (mostly) shitty updates from here on out.

I do wonder though, will the dojo stop upon Japan's release or continue until February?
I think we might see a good update or two in the coming months, but you're right. It's (mostly) shitty updates from here on out.
Yeah, I guess you guys are right, it's weak updates ahead for all of us.

However, Sakurai might decide to show us a few hidden characters. I understand that he wants it to be a surprise, but to be honest, as soon as the game comes out I'm going online/looking in a strategy guide to find out how to unlock all of the characters; I want to have all the characters available to use when playing with friends. I'm still going to savor Adventure mode, and I'm certainly not going to rush through the game. But if Sakurai expects me to fart around on Event Mode, hoping for something to randomly unlock, well, he is mistaken.

Bonsly

Bonsly walks around.
Why is this Pokémon named Bonsly? Those familiar with the world of Pokémon understand that while it appears to be a bonsai tree, Bonsly’s body is made up of rocks and stones.
It’s pretty heavy!
When you throw it at someone, it won’t fly far...
But it sure does hurt!
Even if an opponent’s damage meter is below 50%, this thing packs enough power to potentially knock him or her off.
You may only get hit once in a great while, but if you do, watch out!!
Oh, and it’s not like it can’t be reflected.
