Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Gen. Discussion & Info

The more videos of this game I see the more excited I get to play it. I have just recently started paying close attention to it, I've been busy (and still am) playing all the great games from last year. But there is no doubt this is one of my most anticipated releases this year. That new Mario stage just looks so awesome, brings back so many great memories. The way it looks the music in this game is going to be as epic as anything else in the game. I hope this game sells really well, there really is no reason to think otherwise.

For those of you who preordered an import copy, your shipment may be delayed till sometime in febuary due to high demand and low inventory.

First japanese wii game that has been able to delay preorders. :x

Does anyone have this pre-ordered? I don't. I'm skeptical because I'd love to find an awesome deal like TRU $25 gift card..but I doubt that because they did that around Christmas...

March 9 is a Sunday. Didn't Melee come out on a Sunday too? *shrugs*

So I guess the reason behind the delay was manufacturing issues.

I'm surprised they only pushed the game back a week in Japan, I saw on some site that Nintendo is only going to have 300,000 units ready for next week and stores may not be able to fill preorders.

HOLY fuck.

Several memorable characters compete for brawl supremacy—that’s Super Smash Brothers Brawl in a nutshell.
But what about the past fights for each of those characters? What were they like?
It may sound impossible, but you can experience those battles in Brawl as well!
That’s right, for the first time ever, you can play trial versions of these games by the miracle of Virtual Console!

So.. does this mean there will be a demo for Earthbound?
Meaning, Earthbound should be out before Brawl?
Can it be?

EDIT: On the Japanese site, they show images of Fire Emblem AND Earthbound.....
It's a cool update, but I think you guys are getting a little too excited over demos.
But they're demos of some of the best parts of the BEST games ever! :D

Color me impressed.

JUST 6 MORE DAYS! Gotta find a Japanese Wii this weekend!

I'm a bit confused here -

Are they saying these demos are available on the VC, or that you have to buy the game and they are on the game disk?

Either way, it's a cool update. But I will be much more impressed if the first is true. Hopefully this means they are going to just allow you to demo some other VC games eventually.

The demos are available on the disc. You have to buy the game. It doesn't use the Shop Channel at all.

That's what I thought, it just threw me off when he said "That’s right, for the first time ever, you can play trial versions of these games by the miracle of Virtual Console!"

I'm going with a boo on this update. If it has to be me to say it then I'll say it. Why can't we do this already? Personally I have little stake in demos. If I want to try out a game I'll just find a ROM. If I wasn't that guy. I'd be verily annoyed at no demos.

Because of

1) Lack of space to download demos and run them (though I suspect they could be loaded into RAM, I imagine the Wii couldn't power both an emulator and the proprietary OS at the same time, and even if it can do this, that still means the demo gets lost if you reboot)

2) An inability to save them to an SD card and run them from there (at least, this is not discussed as ever happening, and even if it does, Nintendo counters it with a bs "can't read data fast enough from the card" schtick)

3) Streaming them off Nintendo's online network isn't going to happen, primarily beacuse it would most likely destroy their servers, let alone require a lot of programming on the backend

I don't know how we could get demos, given the current nature of the Wii, unless a hard drive becomes available or saving them to an SD card and using a streamer to load data directly from them (since I personally don't believe that the write speeds are too slow to pull this off, and small VC games could definitely fit/run purely in the RAM if the data were being pulled from the SD card slot).

Eh, I guess its a good way to get people to buy more VC games, but thats about it. Most of us here probably have played all these games already at some point, but newer gamers may appreciate it. I know my friend didn't know who Ness was and found out about Earthbound because of Smash Bros.

What about Nintendo releasing monthly VC demos on a CD or DVD packed in with Nintendo Power? It'd finally make NP worth something.

The CD/DVD storage of demos is the only reasonable method I can think of until an external HD becomes a reality.
Well I never played Kid Icarus, so this will be fun for me.
For $5, if you've never played it, you should pick it up. Especially if you like Mario/Metroid.

I didn't see this mentioned so far, but Ask Iwata - Vol. 4 is now up.

I'm kind of with everyone else, demos are nice, and I'm certainly not going to complain, but I wish VC demos could have already been implemented in some form already. I know with the current architecture of the VC it would be difficult to do, but it seems like if the right strings were pulled it would be possible.

As someone who can't use the VC, I must declare this update "fucking awesome". Not quite Samus Side Boob awesome, but still pretty good.

...

Peach Side Boob?

EDIT: The fact that people that aren't me will get to enjoy Fire Emblem, while people that are me won't is most distressing, however.

While this isn't the greatest thing in the world, having all these demos conveniently packed into one place is pretty cool to me. I mean, seriously, can anyone complain about another feature just packed in on this game? Nintendo is really doing their fans service. I was shocked to see StarFox 64 listed. I expected NES titles only, so it and Super Metroid were welcome surprises.
Snake did make his first appearance on the MSX.
Fixed. The truck have started to move.

I'm pretty sure the roster on Kotaku is fake, considering there are a few character portraits that are from existing character art. Micaiah and Wind Waker Link are probably the two that are most easily noticeable.

Why can't we do demos the same way we do VC games. you download them to your system. It takes up a spot. I fail to see how this couldn't be possible. Since it's a demo you probably don't even need the full rom. When you're done you delete it just like a VC game and download it again later if you wish.

And obviously, at least the games shown have the programming for a timer built into them already. The work is done. They just need to make them available for download.

correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they are ALL previously game artwork. Plus Ridley would NOT work as a character, He needs to be a swooping/fire-breathing AT

I remember back in the day (read: 2002) Nintendo used to give out full versions of these classics as gifts in Animal Crossing. Now they give out VC advertisements. For shame Nintendo. For shame.

It's not something we could argue though. I mean we had a handful of games in AC. I'm more upset we got NOTHING in AC:WW. Now that they have a download service I doubt we'll get any in AC Revolution. What would be nice is if they had VC integration whee you coudl play your VC games in AC. Then again what would be the point. Unless they used AC to somehow allow multiplayer online.
