Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Gen. Discussion & Info
GG's Joe, sorry I don't have access to my comp when I'm playing brawl or else I would've let others in (maybe, I really wanted to 1v1 against you ;))
No worries, no worries! I figured that this was the case! I think I'll jump back on for some FFA. :)

I can't join Blue's game and only Blue's game. I keep getting disconnected, think it might have something to do with firewall and port forwarding and stuff I don't want to deal with. Be nice if someone else gave a try and opened up a game. Maybe a team game so me and Joe could practice.

edit: 17th time was a charm
Changing the game that way will never be adopted at a large enough scale to be viable I dont think.
That's the biggest obstacle. Who wants to buy an $XX.xx peripheral just for Brawl?
Without a doubt, most of the people there are what I would charitably describe as "dirty whores".

But I'm in favour of this project. Dropping the random trip thing is the most obvious benefit, but making the game harder to turtle in is a Very Good Thing. Anyone who's played Starcraft - or any RTS - and had an opponent turtle up rather than surrender when obvious outmatched knows how fucking annoying that shit can get. With the hitstun and shield mechanics as they are, turtling is too viable an option. If changing them around makes the game more Melee-like, then so be it. I don't want to go back to Melee. My Brawl main isn't even in Melee. But keeping Brawl "pure" for the sake of being notMelee is silly (not accusing you of wanting this).
I don't think tweaking stuff around is a bad idea, they're welcome by all means to go for it. I just think it's kind of silly to try and emulate Melee when it already exists. Try something new, go out on a ledge and do something different. Rehashing old ideas just shows a lack of creativity, and they're really wasting the possibilities here. That's kind of my point.

Good games to everyone I played tonight, glad I could finally get some Brawl in...

No dicking around with air dodge mechanics, fortunately. So long as those stay intact, we're a long way from Melee.

Man, Joe. I don't know if it's because I haven't played you one on one in so long or that you just got a lot better but I can't touch your Dedede.
Someone - I'm looking at you, DMK - probably posted it already, but this is very interesting.

Simply put, we may be able to get rid of random tripping, bring back L-cancelling, increase hitstun, etc.
Holy fucking shit.

Brawl may have replayability after all.

We can no longer deny Sakurai programmed Brawl as an exclusively party game, but we can now undo it bit by bit, memory value by memory value...

This is why I can't stand the Smash Brothers "competitive" community. They're trying to edit key mechanics in a game to restore some bullshit rules and techniques that were never intended to exist in the first place - they've got thirty five pages arguing over this, for crying out loud, and they're talking about changing things like gravity?

They seem to be forgetting that Brawl isn't Melee, and I'd be willing to bet that no matter how hard they try they can't make the game regress to its previous form, especially since all they have access to is a compiled, finished product. Looking at the link that Crotch posted, it seems like a lot of the posters there don't know a thing about programming.

It seems like the easiest solution would be to play the game as it was released, and not fuck around with it. If they're so attached to Melee, the game still exists and they can still play it. All they'll have to give up is online play, which sounds like it'd be completely broken by this kind of shit anyway.

Brawl was never intended to be a competitive game, and trying to make it into one is like trying to make a diamond by sitting on a lump of coal. It ain't going to happen.
Man, Joe. I don't know if it's because I haven't played you one on one in so long or that you just got a lot better but I can't touch your Dedede.
Well, I think it's probably a combination of the two. I've been practicing the basics again. Also, I was really focused when I was playing as D3, despite that focus kind of fading over time. So best character + extreme focus = me playing better than I usually do. You were kicking butt against my other characters, though (Ness, Sheik, Yoshi)! :D

EDIT: Walrus, I agree with your assessment. Although I haven't reviewed the thread closely, I can't imagine this will take off. People realize there is no precedent for this kind of manipulation, and will back off (hopefully). I'm really curious to hear what DMK says, though, given that he has (from what I've seen) the most exposure of any CAG to the competitive environment.

Who says the end goal is turn Brawl into Melee? From what I gathered, it's more a matter of... hybridization. Now, as XKCD taught us, that is indeed a dangerous thing, but it could damn well work out.

Of course, dicking around with gravity is a scary thing to me, but I don't think they'll get too crazy with it (if they even get that far).

Also, it's unclear what impact this sort of thing could/will have on online. Opinions run from "game-breaking" to "nonexistent".

I did enjoy the stalemate match on Eldin Bridge where Ness and Kirby proceeded to kick and punch at air for about 2 minutes until the game got fed up and decided to disconnect us

"Why do these changes look like we are trying to turn this game into Melee?
Short answer: Because, we are."

This is fucking ridiculous. It's like someone that loves Super Street Fighter II Turbo trying to hack and remove parrying from 3rd Strike.

This is NOT Melee. They're different fucking games. "Brawl may have replayability after all." Give me a fucking break. It's one thing to dick around with some sort of device in the game for fun (Pikaman), but it's something else entirely when you start suggesting the device can make Brawl "playable."

I like how a lot of the people who were really good at Melee suck at Brawl. When the field is level, that is to say, they cant hold an insane technical advantage against you, they are helpless.

Its like, "WAH! I cant L-Cancel!"

Yea, I cant either, and you're STILL losing.

Not the greatest thing in the world, but D3/Link's stuff cracked me up. Weegee/Kirby moments were pretty good too.

Dude, what are you trying to say?
YAH!

Good games, Daisydog. Sorry about throwing you into the stage with DK, in hindsight it was pretty mean. Mad D, I couldn't join your game for some reason. I'll try later after dinner.

Ha ha, no worries! It was actually pretty cool

And thanks for helping me practice for my Tournament match tonight (that's why I kept picking the same character and stage). Hardly anyone has been online today.
"Why do these changes look like we are trying to turn this game into Melee?
Short answer: Because, we are."
I figured he was being facetious. You probably should have quoted his long answer: "We are simply trying to make Brawl more competitive with as little changes as possible. Instead of pulling random ideas out of our heads that could make the game more competitive and testing them for long periods of time, it is easier to use what has been successful in the past (Melee). If we do run across something completely unique that makes Brawl more competitive without imbalancing the game, we may add it also."

Now, you can debate whether Brawl is more or less competitive than Melee 'til you turn blue. That's about all that forum does. But that ain't something I'm interested in in the least.

As you could probably tell, I support the project, if for no other reason than that playing God is awesome. I also apologize for exposing innocent CAGs to the smashboards. I swear, I only go there for the one Ike thread.
Anyone up for some sparring?
I'm ready. The better question is: is anyone ready to be our punching bags?

EDIT: Argh, I'm tired of being disconnected!

punching bag 1 reporting for duty!
edit: nm

Okay, I think goo and I want to find a team to spar against. Anyone up for the challenge?

EDIT: Goo, you're not online. Correct me if you aren't up for any more games :D.

EDIT2: Yeah, goo's off. GGs to Hero! Although, I did notice that you were responsible for just as many of your own deaths as I was (suicides). ;) I'll hop back on in a minute, but I have a headache. Or maybe I'll play some Mario Kart.

Sorry Joe. My neighbor came by and wanted me to do a favor (i.e. go to Best Buy to save him $). I prolly won't play anymore today but great games, especially the first few matches. They were intense slugfests.

That was weird. Joe did you create a multi man brawl game because you could see I was in the option of searching/creating a multi man brawl or did you just have the same idea?

NO WAY! :D:D:D I created it because I had the same idea! This is a sign from a higher power that we are meant to be on the same team. And did we show those alloys or what!

EDIT: GGs to Hero and dyeknom. I was sick of the disconnects, so I left. That's probably it for me tonight.

EDIT2: In response to the goo: Yes, those matches with me using Ness were the best. I tried so hard to beat you, but I always came this* close! Urgh-um, schlurgh-um!**

*I don't know what 'this' refers to! Probably one stock.
** I don't know what this means either.

I got a little better at reading moves. Sort of. Now if I'm could only commit suicide... Okay, I can read Joe's Ness a little better...Not much about anyone else of course. I give up I keep get disconected. Nice playing with Joe, blue, dyeknom, Suko and someone else. I'm bad with names.

GG's to Arikado, Zitanix and the other guy.........no clue who you are

Need to stop with the SD's and I need to 1v1 against you Arikado, STILL can't come close to taking you

Good games Maigoyume, AmigoOne (that was Ed), Arikado, and JoeB. Joe, your Dedede is still insane. I'll find a way to beat it someday!

Good games to zitanix, JoeB, maigoyume, Amigo, and any others I may be missing.
Need to stop with the SD's and I need to 1v1 against you Arikado, STILL can't come close to taking you
Heh... it's a different beast when there are four people playing. I'd be down for 1v1 matches against you. Just let me know whenever.

Ugh. When I lose like that, it's God's way of telling me I need to go to bed. Sheik did not need to die that quickly.

GGs to Kado and Z. My favorite moment was when I spiked Z's Samus with Yoshi. :D I get warm fuzzies just thinking about it. I'll make my Yoshi competitive soon - you'll all see!

Z, your DK is scary! I don't die against his stage spike as Dedede, but he's still really frightening. But he's fun to infinite chain grab! :D

Kado, you are a stinker. That is all.
Bah! My DK fares pretty good against everyone...except Dedede. Guess I'll hone my metaknight for him. :)

To Hero: I'd join your game, but D and I are waiting for our tourney match. We're kind of constrained by time, so I wouldn't want to accidentally waste any of it in a friendly match. Sorry!
