Surprisingly The Last Movie You Saw Didn't Suck Pt. 2

In the past few days, I've been catching up on some Criterion's that I bought blind.

Revanche
Wings of Desire

Both are great movies, but WoD started out excruciatingly slow. I recommend them both, but only if you can handle subtitles.

Catfish was not at ALL what I was expecting. I couldn't be more conflicted about what that movie was, but I do know that I thought it was very well done and is, quite frankly, a must-see for anyone who uses social media. Which is everybody.

Keeping in pattern with the fact that I've watched a movie every night this week, since this will be the first night I probably don't, last night I watched Frozen and was SCARED STIFF (guffaw guffaw, raucous laughter). Seriously, though. It was a really tense flick and I was into it.

watched scott pilgrim today on a whim and was really surprised that it was a fun and good movie. i especially liked the music in the flick especially that threshold song and in a minor miracle that kid from arrested developement wasnt completly annoying. now i need to read the comics to see how accurate the film was.

White Zombie
The Brain That Wouldn't Die

The first one was very similar to Dracula, especially with the knuckle thing and the sets.

That second one, hosted by Elvira, was freakin' long for 1.5hrs. and needed more freakin' cat fights.

The Social Network- that Eisenberg kid from Zombieland could win an Oscar. The only issue is I dont know how close to reality his portrayal of Zuckerberg is. He played like a college-aged Greg House, which was fun to watch. The next Spider-man, Andrew G showed promise as well. Best flick I've seen in a minute.

Wall Street Money Never Sleeps- money may not snooze, but I did. Oh well.

i read somewhere that jt has been trying hard to get oscar consideration for his role in that film.

Creepshow - Absolutely awesome, I hate that it's taken me so long to watch this, especially as a huge Stephen King nerd. "Meteor shit!" Definitely need to make a point of watching the sequel too, if only to see the adaption of The Raft.

Timberlake was good, but not enough to warrant an Oscar. Its too easy to play the grifter/showboat. The main was much more understated and disgustingly likable.

Predators - Nothing amazing, but a fun watch.

Monsters - Here is one you might not have heard of. It's kind of a gigantic monster movie, but most of the time it is not focused on the monsters/aliens. The movie follows a photographer and his bosses daughter as they try to cross the "infected" part of Mexico (where all the monsters are) into America. Obviously, this is not an easy stroll. Still, they tend to focus more on the characters and their evolving relationship. Really, love stories are so much better when gigantic man eating squids are in the background. I recommend a watch.

The Enforcer. The 3rd Dirty Harry movie. Step down from the first 2, but still reasonably enjoyable.

Also watched The Nightmare Before Christmas on Sunday night. Great as always.

The Girl Who Played With Fire - 4/5 - I didn't love it as much as I loved The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, but it was still a great watch that ended way to soon IMO.

The Social Network - great movie...hard to believe where facebook came from and how it got started. amazing that all this shit went down in only 7ish years

IP Man - 5/5 - Donnie Yen is a badass and it's one of the few martial arts films out there that garners an excellent screenplay and script. Amazing watch.

Jackass 3D - Good but I definitely remember laughing a LOT more at the first two. The 3D was super lame too, I expected more out of that.

The Girl Who Played With Fire.

Thought it was great. Not sure why the reviews are a good bit below those for Tatoo. I liked the 2nd book the most of the trilogy, and liked this movie at least as much as the first one. They cut some stuff for sure, so maybe it was a bit hard to follow if you haven't read the books or something. *shrugs*

Rapace and Nyqvist were fantastic.

oh yeah the 10 man fight was awesome. i dint like ip man 2 though.

The Satanic Rites of Dracula. They showed that chick in the beginning getting all freaky and stuff, but they blurred out her small boobs. Man this movie was boring, considering it had an even slower pace than 3rd Doctor serial.

Sudden Impact. The 4th Dirty Harry. Probably liked it the best of the bunch so far (one more to go), though I wasn't big on the ending.

Power Kids (netflix instant) - 7.5/10
Story is meh but there are 2 fight scenes in this movie that made me go O SHIT!
Kids that do muay thai that use knees, elbos, flips, tricks, etc. It's as if Ong Bak was a kid and made a movie. I highly reccomend it if you like ong bak. But just only watch the 2 fight scenesm, everything else is just stupid.

Girl who kicked the hornet's nest - 3/5

Splice - 2/5

Mutant Chronicles - 3/5

Splice was awful, Mutant Chronicles was just as bad...but was fun to laugh at.

Girl Who kicked the hornets nest, ugh! Dragon Tat is so damn good, it felt like Fire and Hornets nest were made by some completely different studio. I found out from a friend that Fire and Hornets nest were planned to be part of a tv miniseries which would air after Dragon Tat was done theatrically. Due to the huge success of the Dragon Tattoo, Fire and Hornets Nest were chopped up and made into movies. I guess sometime next year they plan to release of Fire and Hornets Nest as the original planned miniseries. From what I heard ~2 hours were cut from each movie to make them theatrical films.

Been a while since I posted, and a whole lot of movies watched since then:

Diary of the Dead
Righteous Kill
National Lampoon's Stoned Age
The Great Silence
The Evil Dead

Robin Hood:

First half was wonderful, 2nd half was poor, maid marian is the biggest buzz kill -- she wasn't a good fit with crowe's character at all. I really want to see a sequel though.

75/100

Letters from Iwo Jima:

It's great visually, and the side of the war from the Japanese side is an interesting spin. But the pacing was pretty bad, and aside from a few well done scenes, most of the movie's messages were fairly shallow and weakly executed IMO.

75/100

Been catching up on the Criterion's I've bought from the B&N sale.

Bigger Than Life
The Magician
House
Crumb
Repulsion
Paths of Glory
Black Narcissus

All of these are somewhere between really good and fucking amazing. Crumb was REALLY challenging, though.

Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman - 2.5/5 - Pretty meh compared to other animated Batman movies. Was pretty nicely animated, but the story was just mediocre at best. Kevin Conroy is still the best Batman voice ever IMO.
