Surprisingly the Last Movie You Saw Didn't Suck

Ironman - Really good, incredible casting. I have a feeling the sequel isn't going to stack up favorably with this one.

Raiders of the Lost Ark - Still an incredible movie, always will be, I might watch Temple of Doom tonight. Here's hoping the fourth one is great too.

Speed Racer on Imax - Severely disappointing. Extremely lackluster....flashy and glitzy, but nothing more. I hate what they did to Spritle. Lots of miscastings in this one. I like Christina Ricci in most of her films, but she definitely should not have been Trixie. I hated the actor who played Spritle, found him less funny and more annoying as hell, and by the end of movie, I was ready to strangle him. Spritle, which worked in the anime, perhaps should have been left out of the film, or at least have been made less annoying. The actor who played him is just awful. I thought Shia Lebof (sp) was overrated and a bit bad, but this guy is the real deal. Shia has shaped up into a decent-fine actor, but he never detracted from any of his movies. This could can't keep quiet and ruins so many scenes. He's interspersed throughout for just nonsense. Also, he fucks up what was otherwise I good ending. Hopefully they edit that shit out on the DVD cut. Pops is proper in the movie as John Goodman, but Sarandon (sp) feels so out of place as the mom. At least they got the actor for Speed Racer right. The action sequences and the CGI effects are great, but flow of the movie is far too interspersed and the pacing just feels off. While the scene changes catch the anime's feel, they just don't work out properly in a film. They leave you disoriented, and in my case a little dizzy, and they create a sense of the film being disjointed and very choppy. The plot is convoluted and incoherent, simply leading you down a mindless dizzying road. It's an anti-capitalist film, spouting the evils of money and conglomerates, yet the Wachowski's have drowned in money since making the Matrices and V for Vendetta. Really, if you want to see this movie, shut your eyes for the first quarter, and just wake up for the racing scenes. Outside of that, it's really just a sad waste.

I'd place this movie in a high 6 overall, maybe a low seven due to the wonderful cinematography and CGI effects.

Well, I can't say that I'm surprised that a 30+ year old cartoon didn't make a smooth transition to the big screen. I just don't see how they honestly thought this would make a good film.

Also, I'm pretty sure Shia Lebouf is not in this film as he's not even credited on IMDB. Maybe I'm wrong.
I was pleasantly surprised by Speed Racer.
I don't know what to think.

Time really liked it. USA Today and Entertainment Weekly didn't.

I really want to see it but I don't want to hate it. ;)

Speed Racer 3/5

This was a really good movie if you come in expecting an over the top action packed remake of a 60's Japanese Cartoon. Wit that being said, it wasn't deep or anything. But it was worth the price of admission to drool at the CGI and see the crazy cinematography. However, I was a fan of the cartoon, so that may affect my opinion on this movie.

Gone Baby Gone 4/5

This was a great thriller movie. Casey Affleck did a great job portraying a PI who was caught questioning his morals. Overall a great movie.

No, I know that Shia isn't in the movie, but what I was referencing was the fact that Shia has turned into a fine actor, though his early roles weren't the best and he seems a bit annoying. The kid that plays Spritle makes you want to tear your hair out. I also hated the stupid little scene they added during the kissing scene which ruined an otherwise solid ending.

SiCKO
Surprised since: It was a worthwhile documentary
My rating: 10/10...5 stars!
Highlights: Go watch it! (it's gotta be the most influential movie I've seen)
My favorite parts:
how much detail and time you can tell was spent on this...and to know that there are places in the world with free college and health coverage

Got through the first hour of Things We Lost in the Fire. It was not good.

I think a lot of people avoided it because of Michael Moore's personality, but it's very well done. And surprisingly moving...I shed more than a few tears while watching it.
Funny Games.

I liked it....I think. My heart was racing through the entire thing.
Saw that a little indie-theater here a few months back. It's VERY intense. I've recommended it to a lot of people but it's pretty unpleasant.

Girlfriend and I watched Beowulf (2007) this weekend. I think they really would have been better served going with a no-name actress as Grendel's mother instead of Angelina Jolie. It was decent, but it jumped from young Beowulf to old Beowulf too jarringly to be a really cohesive experience. I'd give it an entertaining 6.

Teeth - I don't recommend it unless you want to see a bunch of dismembered members...but it's likely you'll end up seeing it anyways out of curiosity.

Mr. Brooks

Free from pepsi and surprisingly pretty good. Especially surprising considering Dane Cook is in it, which could ruin any movie. Here, he was actually tolerable. Worth seeing just for the ending in which Dane Cook
is beaten to death with a shovel.

Amelie (I would put in the original French title since it is so wonderful, but my keyboard screws it up when I try to type it out). - Such a wonderful film. Audrey Toutou (sp) is absolutely splendid and adorable in this film. Simplistic, but its attention to detail springs it forth into life. Definitely would recommend this to anyone. This is actually my third viewing (saw it once before on IFC when I had the channel and twice on DVD, this doesn't count the countless bits and pieces I caught of it on IFC as well.)10/10

Agreed. I actually saw this for the first time a few weeks ago and went out and bought it right after.

I think I'll get that on netflix, I've been looking for some good French films, I'm on my second year of French this year and I'm finally starting to understand what they say in movies

IRON MAN

One of the best comic book movies I've seen. Tony Stark is probably the most interesting superhero alter ego, especially with Downey Jr. playing the part.

Harold and Maude - Had its moments and some definitely worthwhile scenes to it. I liked how I didn't just get it right off the bad, i.e. the comparison between generations, some of the social commentary is very subtle in this film, but I think it's a bit overhyped and a bit overrated. It gets kind of creepy towards the end of the film. Good nonetheless.

Some Like It Hot - Wonderful to see Marylin Monroe, and she's gorgeous in black and white. The film feels a bit aged, mostly because of her acting so ditsy, but it's very enjoyable and a real treat to see her act. She was definitely a great actress, and Jack Lemmon is fun as always. I like him much more in this role than in The Apartment.

Great movie, I have a soft spot for Jack Lemmon. The Odd Couple and How to Murder Your Wife are my two favorite Jack movie rolls.

I think I might go on a Jack Lemmon run once I see Magnolia (said earlier in the thread I would) and rewatch Pulp Fiction. Thanks for the recommendations. Outside of The Apartment and Some Like It Hot, the only other thing I've seen him in was Grumpy Old Men and its sequel.

that is an excellent Jack Lemmon movie... from more recent times, I will never forget his role in Glengarry Glen Ross... I loved The Apartment... nut also loved Some Like it Hot
A Bridge To Far

Finally watched it after owning it for about 4+ years.
What did you thinks about it?

A Bridge too Far is one of my favorite war movies. I always liked it because it is unlike most war movies. ABtF centers around
the Allies getting their asses kicked from a predictable mission that goes horribly wrong instead of most Hero WWII war movies.
It was on top of my list before Spielberg raised the bar impossibly high with Saving Private Ryan.

It was really damn good. Long as fuck, but not a dull moment. It's amazing how many fuck ups one plan can have.
