Tales from Good Will / Salvation Army 2008
Got a black wireless 360 controller for $8, works fine and also an hddvd bourne ultimatum for $3. Not too shabby for Goodwill...
Nice find on the controller!

I was at a different goodwill than usual yesterday and they had about 30 different Genesis games. Jorday vs. Bird, Phantasy Star 2, etc. Neat, but I have no need/know the value of any of them (aftermarket).

Not from a store, but from the ShopGoodwill site again.

A pair of SNES systems with 42+ games....the opening bid? A mere $125.00. I LOL'd, to say the least.

Wow, I thought you were going to say you bought it. That's crazy.

Hell no....though I have sat there and kept up a 'find an Ebay seller' page on Ebay and cut/pasted many of the buyer names on ShopGoodwill to see if they're double registered. It just amazes me how lazy some people are to not use a completely unique user id on there that doesn't match to a similar or exactly matching name on Ebay.

It irks me to no end to think that some of the bidders may be moms or dads trying to win stuff for their kids or a gamer like me trying to cheaply get back parts of my old collection of games, only to have some douchebag who wants to flip it on Fleabay turn around and grab it and want to charge 4x what they paid for it.

I know for a fact that kapttripps and at least ONE other person on SG are reselling assholes. I should know, since I was already outbid by kapttripps on something I just bid on like an hour or so ago.

Went to SA today and picked up Super Mario All Stars for $2. Also got the complete original trilogy of Star Wars on VHS for $5. Don't kill me when I say this, but... I've actually never seen it before!

You must be under 18 years old. Either way, you have no excuse now. Really, watch them right now.

The most most Goodwill ever has is a few Sega Genesis games, usually sports. Better than nothing though. Where do you guys live to get Wii stuff? And who would donate that? I totally get anything last gen or before, but you have to be mighty generous to donate something like that.
I really don't get how people can find these things at Goodwill. Granted I don't go very often but when I do the "electronics" section consists of 5 vhs's, a stack of old cassettes and a turn table.
YMMV

i stopped going to goodwill long ago. I found some NES games once, some good ones too, and they gave me a bulk discount, also YMMV about the haggling.

And yeah, the genny and snes and dc systems are always with no cords and non working. That is not a YMMV heh. Well occasionally you will luck out but in my travails dont bother. OR just try to look at the cosmetic condition for the cartridge formats.
Oh my God, and that's an OC Goodwill store? In LA they are totally pillaged. I've never so much as seen a game related item. The bastard workers take anything that is remotely good that gets donated for themselves.
yeah, you rarely will see some decent deals, if there were no gamers working there that day, and it JUST came in.

But for the most part i gave up long ago for los angeles. Maybe I should hit up beverly hills heh

Picked up two new, sealed copies of Perfect Dark N64 for $6.99 each and several Disney SNES cartridges for $1.99 each. Also got a big stack of various Marvel comics for $6. Mostly X-Men and Spiderman. Nothing valuable but good volume for my daughter to look at.
... Where do you guys live to get Wii stuff? And who would donate that? I totally get anything last gen or before, but you have to be mighty generous to donate something like that.
A lot of times it's from Target. A box might be busted up a bit, or marked up so they can't sell it in perfect condition. So they sell it to Goodwill for a reduced price. A lot of Goodwill's recently got a load of GH2 and GH3 packs in. I know my Goodwill got about 10 sets of GH games. I'm bidding on a Wii GH3 and Wii Play tomorrow.

I get so mad at my local GW I constantly go in and find nothing to buy than I go to there online store and bam they have tons of video game stuff thats being sold and alot of it is from the GW right by my house! The only game related stuff I have been able to find lately at my GW is an occasional genesis sports game and a ps1 with no cords that they want $25 for. But there online shop has Wii Play with 2 controllers for sale, a virtual Boy with 4 games, a GBA SP with charger. And thats just some of the stuff that there online store is selling that comes from my local GW. I checked on the item listings and saw where it was shipping from. Thats why I know that all the good stuff is being slapped online where idiots pay more money than the items worth!!

For example here are soem items from the first 2 pages of shopgoodwill.com video game section all of these items are from the Tacoma, WA store. And this isnt even all of them :(

That's too bad that they're putting a lot of stuff online rather than in the store. Do you have Silent Auctions at your Goodwill or a case where they keep "higher end" electronics? Locations that I've been to usually keep them in cases and not out where they can get stolen.

Most of those items are probably from donations from all 20 locations that Tacoma runs, not just that one store by you. The store by you is probably where they run their shopgoodwill out of. At least you could save on shipping. (If the prices aren't insane, which a lot of times they can be.)

On a side note a local tv station is doing a story on my shopgoodwill location today. I'll put up a link once the show is archived/if it's interesting.

the store by me doesnt do any silent auctions they do have a case they keep more expensive stuff in but usually its just crap or highly over priced. I once saw Wii Play (game only no controller) that was covered in packaging tape for $30.

ya know, i cant really blame the goodwill stores for doing that, i mean, lots of people will just want to buy all the good shit at a goodwill store for 2 bucks and then turn around and sell it on ebay. Why shouldnt the salvation army and other stores do this?

i know why they do it but its still annoying cause I am not a reseller I buy them to collect them and one of my best sources for random deals has dried up

My Goodwill is usually pretty dry as far as good deals go. But a few months ago, they had a stack of PS1 games, and I picked up Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions for $5. Not too shabby.

Enjoy and I hope there isn't anything wrong with the tapes.

Because they get this shit for free from donations and overprice the garbage even when it's IN one of their stores? I know that's the way the Salvation Army stores are around here with pricing.

I'm sorry, but I'd rather pay $5 for a SNES/Genesis/PS1 while HOPING it works, than pay $25 and find out later it's an expensive doorstop. Big difference there and I speak from experience. I paid $5 for a PS1, which if I recall correctly DID power on, but didn't do much else. I was just glad I only paid $5 for it and not the typical $25 I see SNES systems go for.

What gets me is that many of the SA stores by me 'hold' shit for their employees, which would otherwise go to the public. To me, that's just plain wrong, the employees should have NO advantage over the general public when stuff comes in. You wanna buy it, put it on the floor, then wait for your break and pay for it and HOPE it's still there.

Oh and DragonMaster, I've seen those auctions from the Tacoma store frequently on the ShopGoodwill site, they start the fuckers off at $19.59 for most shit. How that is 'thrift' is beyond me, but hey, greed exists in every business I suppose, even a non profit.

Another thing that gets me is, since these GW stores plopping stuff on the SG site obviously have time to list the items, why don't they have time to fully test them? You're not telling me that there aren't people just standing around who could be hooking up these systems to a tv of some sort and actually determining they work before plunking them up on the site? That's bullshit when I read 'system was turned on, no attempts were made to test further'. Lazy fucks, if you ask me, who just wanna make the money without making sure they're selling good quality merchandise. If these assholes were Ebay sellers, they'd have all been banned long ago for selling possible junk merchandise.

So... How do you really feal?;)

LOL It's one of the things that's bugged me for YEARS now, that these organizations get in this stuff and don't even feel the need to try and make sure it works before having someone pay for the privilege of maybe getting a broken item. Worst part is, they give you that 'no refund' bullshit. If they're not gonna test the shit, sell it CHEAPLY then.
A lot of stuff.
CheapestGamer, I know you are very passionate about this topic as you know I am as well (our previous thread http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=153999). You have a lot of valid points, and I agree with some of them. That being said just two quick points. The amount of donated/purchased items that have to get turned around (sold) is quite significant and just can't be fully tested. I know it's no excuse on such high-priced items, and I wish they would test them, but most Goodwill's should have a return policy.

Second, it sucks that these prices on shopgoodwill are so high and that deals seem to be scarce in stores as well. The problem there is that the pricing isn't an exact science. There are guidelines, but when you get someone who doesn't know the value of something or who perceives the value to be more than it's worth is when you get all these crazy prices.

Anyhow, carry on.

Well, from the few items I see at my local SA stores(no Goodwill stores around here that aren't 30-40 miles away), I see the trend of overpricing stuff getting WORSE. On a rare occasion, you'll find a game or two that're complete and in good shape for $2-3, but most games are in the $5-7 range here. Most systems are $25-30 with NO guarantees and on the RARE occasion they do have one reasonably priced, it's usually on a day I left my $$$ at home and it's long gone by the time I get back.

To me, even if they priced the stuff @ .99 a pop(which would make it go quickly imo), they're STILL making $$$ on it, so why price it so high? The word thrift should definitely be BARRED from use in their store signage, if they can't even remember wtf it means.

What Goodwill location are you at? It sounds like it's the absolute drizzling poops.

On a side note, there was a stack (8-10) of sealed PS3 All Pro Football 2K8 for $5.99 today. I passed on them since the trade in at GS was $4.

I noticed that too , but people pay it. There's no incentive for SA to lower the price. Goodwill is also jacking up prices in my area.

I'm in the northeast corner of Pennsylvania. There's alot of mountains around here, with about 10-20 miles between major cities around here. We used to have several Goodwill stores around here when I was a kid, but like some of the other store chains(Acme markets for one) they closed up due to lack of sustainable business around here.

The closest one(Goodwill) to me now is a shiny new retail store that was being built in a little town called Hazleton which is about 25-30 miles from me. Unfortunately, unless I knew there were something worthwhile to make the trip down there to snag, it's just not worth the 40 minute trip to the new store.

Oh and the All Pro Football 2K8 gets even WORSE trade value @ the Transworld(FYE, Coconuts, Wherehouse) chain. It gets a meager $2 there before any bonuses.

You do realize that most thrift store employees are making barely above minimum wage if that right? Being able to hold stuff is one of the few perks if any of the job. Don't like it... too bad. And get over it.

All I'm gonna say here is that they need to find a better fuckin job then, if THAT is their only perk. We see what happens with Gamestop all the damn time, when the assclowns working there 'hold' stuff for MONTHS and MONTHS and then either get fired or quit and the inventory is off for forever it seems.
All I'm gonna say here is that they need to find a better fuckin job then, if THAT is their only perk.
For some people that's the only thing they can find. Give them a break will ya.

We see what happens with Gamestop all the damn time, when the assclowns working there 'hold' stuff for MONTHS and MONTHS and then either get fired or quit and the inventory is off for forever it seems.

Then call the DM on them or quit bitching about it. Or better yet... quit going to Gamestop. Problem solved. Case closed.

Just got Wii Play w/controller for $21.30 through Goodwill's silent auction. Didn't win the GH3 for Wii, but what are you gonna do?

Passed on Streets of Rage 2 for $5 and Pokemon Battle Revolution for $25 today at my local GW (I already have both); but I found two Genesis games I didn't have for $0.90 each at the other local thrift -- Arrow Flash (complete) and Greendon the Beached Surfer Dude (game & case only). Passed on Quackshot because, again, already had 'im.
Then call the DM on them or quit bitching about it. Or better yet... quit going to Gamestop. Problem solved. Case closed.
Believe me, I think I'm close to taking a job at a Salvation Army, I've been out of work and taking little jobs here or there for the past year or so to make ends meet. What sucks is that I'm a trained medical coder, but without experience/certification, no one will hire me and I keep holding out for the ONE place I think will let me get that experience by hiring me, only to be disappointed.

As for calling the local DM for the Gamestops, you must not have ever read my posts about how much he and I dislike one another, namely because I was hitting every store in his district to some extent whenever there was a guide drop. Of course, it didn't help that I was denied on ONE guide at the closest GS to me and I sent him an email acting like I was a regular customer and then he bumped into me while I was eying up the guide rack and salivating over all of the older drop guides they still had in stock.

A big confrontation ensued and he came very close to banning me from his stores. LOL So yeah, calling the GS DM to complain about the practice of holding stuff would NOT work around here, not for me anyway.

I went to my GW yesterday and I found a Futurama Tin sign that says

"resist the permanent career chip"

It has a tiny little scratch on it but other than that its in good shape. I looked online and to my suprise its rare. I saw a new one on eBay for $25 with 4 days left. Granted mines not new but still I only paid $3 for it. But I dont think I am going to bother selling mine I think I will just keep it.

WOW!!! Either stores are already clearing out Halo 3 or the ShopGoodwill site just had a large donation from one person of multiple copies of the game. Unfortunately, most are already being bid on by another fuckin reseller from Ebay.

I've got my eye on a couple things again, though I know that(as usual) people will snipe me at the last second or bid it up past my 'comfort' zone.
Because they get this shit for free from donations and overprice the garbage even when it's IN one of their stores? I know that's the way the Salvation Army stores are around here with pricing.
I still dont get it, if you are really upset with the goodwill stores in your area, and think they are over priced, then you might want to shop at a different store.

YMMV. some goodwill stores will throw an NES system into the garbage if it has the blinking screen problem :whistle2:(

other stores will put out a deck only genesis system with no cords or controllers for $15. Yuck

I am pretty sure that sort of thing happens at GS/EB/GC far more than good will. At GS and EB, they have a magic drawer that glows when it is opened and has all of the best games from the past 20 years that are on hold for employees. Suikoden 2 for the PS1, nocturne for the ps2, a few sealed copies of lunar eternal blue etc, probably a few sealed copies of panzer dragoon saga.

All of the GS and EB stores have this magic drawer. It is called the "magic stash". and if you pay them $5 they will let you take a peak and the drawer that holds the magic stash. Some employees will deny its existence, but it is mandatory at all EB/GS

The second rule of the Magic Drawer is, you DO NOT talk about The Magic Drawer.

I heard about the magic drawer at my GS whent was babages, sadly the way i foudn out about it was I traded in a game(X-com UFO Assault...I got $.50 for it) and one employee whispered to the other...That is going in the drawer. I did get a good deal a few weeks ago soem guy was trying to trade in a lot fo 64 stuff at EB, I bought the whole lot from him for $7.

My only deal from a Thrift shop this year was .49 Contra 3. December i found "The Next Tetris64" for .49, and DOAX(360) for 5(it was sitting beside some $10 NES games....

Actually, the only Goodwill around me is 25-30 miles away and it was JUST built. I haven't been to it yet, but I'm sure as soon as they start getting video game stuff, I'll see it on the ShopGoodwill site instead of in their store. The Salvation Army stores around here though, are pretty worthless, wanting $5-6 for used and scratched games most times.

Thing is, most of the 'zomg rare' stuff that people go ga-ga over, I could care less about. But if it's something I'm interested in and they magically can't find the game, but can find the case, I'll ask if I can have the case, manual and artwork for it in case I find a disc only copy someplace else.

Most have been willing to give me at least the artwork and manual before, which I'm sure pissed off some employee if they were holding the game in their personal hold drawer. I think that's the only reason I did it actually.
