Where is the weekly ad?

I can't find a trade in value for an item?

You are allowed to trade in 4 copies of the same game (same system) within a rolling 30 day period.

Can I use the $5 monthly coupon on gift cards?

Yes you can in store but not online please note not all gift cards will apply to this rule.

I have a $XX.xx pre-owned reward certificate, and I want to use it on a B2G1 transaction. Should I?
It depends. If the three games are equal value, do not use your certificate. The value of the certificate would be applied to the free game, which would not benefit you. If one game is more expensive, you can use the certificate to make it the same value as the other two games ($5 reward certificate applied to transaction with two $10 games and one $15 game would make all three games $10).

TERMINOLOGY AND LINGO:
ASL/SL: Assistant Store Leader, Store Leader; manager positions at GS.
B2G1: Buy two, get one free.
GS: GameStop
JD: Junior detective, an employee who is out to get someone
LP: Loss Prevention; this is the department that actually bans accounts after being flagged.
TC/TiC: Trade credit.
TIV/TV: Trade in value, or what a game currently trades for. When posting a TV for a game, always use the base value.

I wonder if my nearby store was closed for today. I called four times and no answer. I was going to try and find out if I have until at least tomorrow at closing to pay off and pick up my SW2 games and Pro 2 controller.

Likely registers being down nationwide. They likely will extend pick up so if its not up by tomorrow or Saturday it will the next week

ZBOTW and MKW for $140 each, anybody~?

Love to see scalpers get fucked over. These clowns are just wasting their gas and time and will have to return everything they bought.

In a perfect world, resellers in places like marketplace should be handled like the show ‘to catch a predator’. Make flipping illegal and have swat dudes in bushes ready to tackle the seller at the meeting spot. At that point all is right in the world.
I rather they put all that money and effort into catching drug dealers and traffickers

In completely GameStop fashion, one store ruined their batch of Switch 2’s by stapling the receipts to the box for the midnight opening. The staples ruined all the screens.

i called nintendo for an update on the joycons i’d sent in and off hand asked about this and even the random employee knew exactly what i was talking about and was cracking up, and said offhandedly that this might be gamestop’s last console launch with nintendo, jokingly of course… i think both nintendo and gamestop are at fault tbh. where the hdmi cable is located in the current box should actually be where the tablet is to better protect it. there’s absolutely no protection for the tablet

Went to pick mine up last night after work and the employee was acting all odd and went to the back to call his boss. I overheard him mention he didn't know what to do. I think they oversold the systems at the midnight and there were two people who hadn't picked theirs up yet. Me and another guy. So, I think whichever of us got there first would've gotten the last one and the other was SOL. Thankfully that last one went to me lol. They also oversold on my copy of Bravely Default so that was fun. Kind of a mess but the employee was nice about it at least.

Back in the day, during the PSwii360 era, we were always told to oversell and make it up to stragglers. Their bet was that people forget and get busy, so better to have the sale today versus a loyal customer tomorrow.

I didn't. Wasn't fired, because I was one of their few knowledgeable and friendly salesmen. Made sure reservations came first until we got a restock. Bad practice, IMO.

It's one of the reasons I don't pre-order. That and buying sight unseen at full price ain't the CAG way.

Don't really recommend relying on GameStop. More so as they drive the company into the dirt, draining out what they can, while they can.

As much as it's easy to shit on gamestop for a lot of their terrible practices and poorly managed stores. I will miss the concept of gamestop once it's gone. I have paid for countless games and consoles at launch through trades, flips, etc. Often getting these games and consoles for half their price once you calculate what I paid for the things being traded. The "CAG" way can be different for everyone, some of us create our own discounts, in a way, to get newer products we want. Some see games on sale or a b2g1 or black friday and just think they don't need anything or their backlog is too big, while some of us see the opportunity to double their funny money.

Well said. Nothing will beat an official discount, but I love the middle (and at times superior) ground Gamestop offers me in that I can create my own and avoid having to wait potentially months/years just to save the same amount of money or less.

It always feels... not quite taboo, but at least a little awkward to admit to sorta liking Gamestop outside of here because of their practices. As a company, I know whatever fate awaits them will be totally deserved, between them often sucking and the increasing push towards digital. But I really will miss taking complete advantage of them and making gaming for me be so much more affordable for the past few years. The flips, the price glitches, the B2G1 deals, all of it.

I thought the release of the PS5 Pro and Switch 2 would be the very gradual start of me winding down, but these latest unexpected flips I've done have given more credit than I ever thought I'd have lol

I suppose I still find deals, discounts, and opportunities (and enjoy them more) through local stores, flea markets, and not giving more money to Lord Dogfood.

I get the vibe, I worked there for five years, as well. But the good times are predominantly gone and likely not coming back.

I suppose if retail arbitrage is the hobby, sure, it might be sad. But as for actually being a third place for game playing types, it's ass now and I'd suggest finding local stores.

Hopefully more can hop on the VGP model and sell direct to consumer versus being stuck on Walmart and GameStop shelves

Seriously, support your local store. You may not get the unsustainable feedback loop of flips, but you'll probably get better prices, product priced on condition, and likely better value for trade. I shop my local shops and get better deals than GameStop consistently and the folks there are beholden to corporate overlords.

I've only found good deals at GameStop at clearance season. Their used sections don't have what I want, and the new is sold out of anything I would want, and opened, making Amazon or VGP the better bet.

I do like the idea of Gamestop. Having a store to walk into that has actual games on the shelves. Similar to the wonder of Toys R Us. How I waited for the Sunday newspaper to tear at the Toys R Us ad and then beg my mom to take me..every single Sunday...not that we went, but had to try.

I am also thankful that I got to take my kids (they are 25 and 21 now) to those stores and peruse or pick up a game on release day.

But today...well most GSs have barely any games inside and if you ask a kid about a Toy Store (like Toys R Us or Kaybee) it is almost something mythological.

I think the best packaging option would be to add a small layer of foam glued to the box where it covers the screen. This will add a little bit of protection during shipping, stocking, etc. Will this ever happen though? No, because money.

the problem I have is I consider the credit as cash so I still wait for a discount before using my credit

the problem I have is I consider the credit as cash so I still wait for a discount before using my credit

I mean, I understand going all in on Gamestop's ecosystem, that's what I do too to an extent where I consider it my "gaming budget", but I'm never going that far. Cash will always be more inherently valuable.

Not to say that I spend it freely with no consideration of deals or anything, I didn't suddenly forget how to be a CAG. But if I'm explicitly going out of my way to flip stuff in preparation to buy something, especially a new console of all things, I'm not going to just let the credit sit there, especially when memes aside you never know how much longer Gamestop has.

So yea, when I quickly turn some cash (or credit) into double the store credit or whatever, or use my Dell points to find stuff to buy that I can trade in, I definitely have no issues considering that as a "discount" in most circumstances. At least for the stuff I really want. For the games I'm less sure about, yea sure I'll wait for a deal for even more savings.

On switch 2 subreddit, see some complaints about dead pixels and one about swollen battery.
Might just be the amount of consoles that sold, theirs bound to be issues.
Or a quality control problem.

If anyone was thinning of using new gamecube controller on PC, it won't work.
Was tempted to get a switch 2, but might wait for sale or V2.

GS was doing so good for me until today. Went to pick up my switch 2, and the associate tried to play dumb, and tacked on a pro renewal for $25 without asking me. After I noticed the discrepancy and pointed it out to her, she said ‘I did that because that’s the only way to apply the coupons on your account’ lmao. Said it can’t be refunded, told her screw the switch 2, just want a refund of everything, I no longer want it.

Left such a bad taste in my mouth

Should be noted my pro subscription is still active until mid July /endrant
She didn’t realize she was dealing with a CAG

Mine wasn’t that bad but when I picked mine up yesterday I got probably the hardest, most obstinate sell I’ve ever had at GameStop. Complete with stare down when I told them I didn’t want the warranty. Legit, 30 second glare of him staring at me when I said I didn’t want it. Didn’t say anything, just stated at me.

Then it was that I need a second set of joycons because the first ones would break and there was nothing they would be able to do for me and it’s already happened before with the first switch that “everyone’s” joycons broke and they couldn’t play their system. This was the only time games would be available for it in store. I should get a screen protector because just docking it would make it unplayable in handheld from “all the scratches”

It was wild, in all my years of going to GameStop and all the consoles and other items I’ve bought, I have never, ever gotten such a hard upsell. He literally turned a 2 minute transaction into about 15 minutes because he kept trying to just stare me down ever single time I said no. The warranty was certainly the longest quiet period but I really had to stifle myself from laughing in his face because it was getting to be so over the top.

I miss the several different retro and used video game stores that existed before Gamestop came in and pushed everyone else out of business. similar to a hostile takeover, but with commercial real estate and locale. Who didn't operate a shit-run retail stores which stole my credit card info twice, and bought an $1,100 gun from some webshop in Wisconsin on one occasion.

Like, do you know what there was before Subway? Other sandwich shops. with actual good food and good service. The world was fine without them.

Stupid GS wouldn’t take my Wii trade in because I was missing a door. So I couldn’t get 20% bonus on my switch pickup.

Btw if anyone in the Bay Area (peninsula) is looking for the switch 2, I’ll sell it at cost since I just wanted to use up some GS credit. PM me.

That's an awful story. My go to move is to say, "Look. I know youre just doing your job and I'm sorry and don't mean to be disrespectful but I have somewhere I need to be. I just want the item, no extras and I'll leave you a glowing review using the code on the receipt if you can help get me out of here asap."

Often that works. When it hasn't its even more mind blowing. I still remember a sales associate at Staples doing the same thing to me 5 years ago after my speech and the employee near her trying to hide his disrespectful laughter toward her obliviousness.

i read that thread about the "swollen battery" and i am pretty skeptical. im sure there will be defects when you sell a few million of something, but that guy's story was off. He contacted Nintendo and they told him it was definitely a swollen battery and to stop using it because it is a fire hazard and send it to them immediately for a replacement. No business is going to admit anything is wrong with their product until it's recalled. they could know its prone to explode if you set it on its side, but they will just suggest you not do that if at all possible.

Gamestop will always reek of desperation.

It's like trying to cancel a gym membership, or your cutting the cord and ending a cable subscription.

A major console release is one of the few times they ever get so much foot traffic, so it makes sense for them to try and squeeze this opportunity dry (especially from unknowing parents that don't know better). The fact is that besides the headwind of digital games eating into their business, they also lose out to the other major online retailers that give the convenience of shipping (free or lower threshold) -- of not having to take a drive (getting stuck in traffic), waste gas, and waste time going to a physical store.

But to train their employees to use pressure & intimidation tactics (deception, lies by omission, or just straight up false statements, etc), does the opposite of enticing customers to continue to set foot in their store. Gamestop can't find other ways to compete on being the premiere video game store -- either by either having better prices, or finding ways to win them over (a can of Redbull doesn't count; let alone requiring you to be a Pro member to get one).

These are all characteristics of someone under water; drowning and flailing.

I read that too and someone in the thread said the place that’s swollen isn’t even where the battery is.

I’d be more concerned about dead pixels.

Why don't they just set up bins to collect plastic bags? Then use those for filler?

Not to mention it'd be illegal more than likely to send it back. It's one thing to ship batteries that can explode. But a battery like that is going to explode it's not a matter of if only when. Bare minimum you'd have to remove the battery.

Sounds like something from an anime, it's so over the top.

I imagine both of you JoJo staring at each other, the guy pulling out all the ass pulls to sell you warranties, as you stand stone still and just say "No" as your aura deflects his onslaught.

It'd get at least a 7.2 on MAL, for sure.

I vividly recall going into my local TRU for the last time before it permanently closed down, and my mom bought me FFIV GBA CIB brand new for $19.99. I was just a kid back then barely getting into the Final Fantasy series because of Advent Children. Had I a time machine, I would've bought the entire bargain bin...
