I also watched the first 5 episodes of Gurren Lagann because people keep urging me to "OMG WATCH IT." It's okay so far.
That's because it's just one giant bundle of giant robo fanservice.

Don't feel alone. I didn't like it all that much either.

I don't dislike the show, but I don't think it is the next big thing like some people do.

what could be an example of a show that was the "next big thing"?

only one that springs to mind is NGE, everything else is just the flavor of the month(s)

What? Are you asking for shows that were influential/groundbreaking, or those with a large following?

Personal tastes aside, shows that either stand out as unique (Cowboy Bebop), are insanely popular (Naruto), or have a style of their own (Samurai Champloo).

Gurren Lagann just doesn't stand out like those other shows I have mentioned, so far.

i'd say unique and style of their own are one and the same, and honestly i think TTGL falls under that category if we're gonna put champloo in there. champloo was for the most part a traditional samurai journey story with a few modern themes like the hip-hop vibe throughout

i'm by no means saying TTGL is an amazing series, it's not, but it's definitely different in a few respects, namely visual style which i think qualify it to be a "unique" show

Okay, it's premiere time! A lot of what's coming up this season has caught my eye, so I'll be updating this post as I watch. Note that these are first episode reviews, meaning my opinion is all but set on each of these.

Rosario + Vampire Capu2: I never really liked this series to begin with, but vampire Moka was motivation enough to get me through the first season. It seems nothing has changed (aside from a new character). I'm expecting nothing more than panty shots galore, answers to the questions from the first season, and that guy who deems it necessary to explain the rosary removal in every episode.

Clannad - After Story: Though the first season ended rather abruptly for me, I really liked it. The first episode of this new season brings absolutely nothing new to the table, and that's why I loved it. Stay as you are, Clannad.

I guess Yoshino being fucking hilarious didn't hurt either.

Akane-iro ni Somaru Saka: The premise is pretty interesting, and the first episode was pretty funny. I'll stay tuned.

Toradora!: Not my cup of tea, but I did get more than a few laughs out of this one.

Toaru Majutsu no Index: This anime has a wacky side to it, and I likes it.

While it was to be expected as the head of Atkatsuki seeing Pein walk into Konoha directly , kick ass and takes names is awesome.

Latest Claymore chapter sure had a lot of talking

I need to get back to Claymore. I missed the last few months. I love the series.

So you missed 1 release?
ohohohohohoho

Finished watching Desert Punk today. It was a decent anime. I started to regret getting it because of some of the earlier episodes (4 and 5 I think), but it gets better as it goes along. A few decent laughs here and there.

Can anyone give me a few suggestions for a anime TV series to watch? I don't care if its fairly old. The only animes I've watched and enjoyed are Rurouni Kenshin (best), Yu Yu Hakusho, DBZ, one or two Gundam Series, and Big O. I'm not really an Avatar or Inyuasha guy though.

Robotech? Just throwing an idea out there. Getting ready to watch that myself once I finish the last 6 episodes of Record of the Lodess War.

Edit:That's a small but nice list of shows there. Like all of them. Haven't watched enough gundam though.

Because, well, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Full-Metal Alchemist, Paranoia Agent...
... but if you HAVE seen those and didn't enjoy ANY of them, I'm the wrong person to ask...

Thanks. I'll look into that. :D

Granted I might not be that greatest person to ask , as I haven't seen nearly as much as others here.

This. These are all good/great shows as well.

You like fighting and giant robots, Tenjo Tenge, Naruto, Bleach, S-cry-ed and many, many others cover fighting, it would help if I knew which Gundam you saw and enjoyed but Blue Gender, Gun Sword and... crap drawing a blank on robot anime right now. Also try Tekkaman Blade which features humans fighting in bio mechanical suits as the earth goes to hell in a handbasket

you should check out Gundam 00

also Naruto and Bleach but be aware of the filler
Afro fucking samurai

Outlaw Star is neat.

Where's Kirin to reprimand us all?
Thanks for the input. I'll definitely look into all of them.

As for which Gundams I watched, I honestly don't remember since I was kinda young. I think it was Endless Waltz. I was thinking of watching another series, but there are so many of them. Is it necessary to watch them in order? Or are the stories completely different?

Then add to the list:
Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzimiya
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Death Note

I'm currently watching Trigun and Mushi-shi. I find them both sorta average, although Mushi-Shi is realllllly beautiful. Not at all action packed but keeps me interested.

Trigun I can't believe I've never watched, but I remember why it never impressed me before - sorta silly and I don't care for the animation style much. But it does get better as it goes along, and I'm really enjoying it now.

Trigun comes off as a poor man's rurouni kenshin, except making a hell of a lot less sense. Had the show remained something of a comedy it would have been a much better show but the weak drama thrown in along with Vash's motivation just killed it for me.

Kenshin-itis?

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Code Geass yet considering it seems to be quite popular and I must admit it falls into the few giant robot series that I genuinely like alongside Gurren Lagann & Full Metal Panic. In other news, the Lucky Star OVA is pure otaku goodness... but what the hell do I know? I'm a bit biased.

code geass, death note and gurren lagann are some good picks.

i got to toss in hikaru no go and hajime no ippo, those two are required viewing for any fan of shonen

I'm seeing a lot of good things tonight, except these people have subitis and think they're too good to listen to shit in their own language.

Something Rei Zero. I can't wait to see how the hell this is supposed to go on with NO CAST.

I'll have to check that out then, cause I'd love to see a better Trigun.

Rurouni Kenshin was terrible. I'm really not seeing how anyone could like it unless they really love the "do not kill, desu~" Japanese mantra. :/

Finished watching Record of Lodess War. Not bad for it's length , and never felt like it dragged. Only real complaint was the main character parn. He jumped around it ability so much during the 13 episodes , first he was really weak , then he got super strong , then he got weak again , then he juiced up in the last episode to save the world. It's like they couldn't make up there mind whether he should be the underdog or the destroyer.

Anybody know if the series that follewed up the OVA , Chronicles of the Heroic Knight , is any good?

Guess I'll be watching Noien next , since I put it off to knock out RoLW really quick.

Chronicles.......... blah. Completely forgettable after all was said and done, I only liked it for the reinvention of Orson who got much better characterization and a theme song

I remember watching a few episodes of it a few years ago when I rented a volume of it from blockbuster. Came off as a really weak shonen show. Hoped that maybe it would get better. Your right about orson though. Completely forgot about that until you mentioned it.

Subitis? Wha?

Ga-rei. Motorcycle was crazy awesome, as was the ending. Kinda reminds me of Kiss Dum for some reason. Looking forward to ep2, even though the majority of ep1 was kinda meh.

The show tries to mix it up with a new cast during the second half but it was all just falling flat to me. Orson made the first half of the show enjoyable, when it got to the new cast I couldn't find one likable character in the bunch. The Ashrum /Parn resolution also was a complete joke

That fact that they would dredge it back up sounds like a bad idea on its own. Parn may not have been able to finish his issues with him , but at least he got to have a semi-honorable death , even for a villain.

Sub-itis. Hailing any show with subtitles as superior to dubbed shows just for subtitle's sake. We're not catching up on anything good that's been dubbed recently because it was specifically stated in the first meeting that subtitles are superior. Never mind one is just as much at the mercy of whoever's translating for subs...

Oh, geez. Yeah, I hate it when people are like that. I like dubs better generally.

The t.v series ends their relationship very, very differently.

i find dubs completely unwatchable. i seriously can't switch back and forth.

dubbing is an ethnocentric practice i can't stand, no matter what the language.

So how do you watch your anime? English subbed with the mute button on?

I actually liked Rurouni Kenshin and Yu Yu Hakusho dubbed.

I don't like dubs.. but I seldom like the original voice acting either. Very rarely does either side get it right, but usually the original voices are much better. The problem for me, with both, is that their voices are usually too... cartoonish. Too zany. Too much of a character, yknow? Does any of that make sense? Probably not.

I think zany voice acting has its place: stuff like Dragonball Z, One Piece, FLCL, etc, it's fine for them to sound like cartoons. I think stuff like Evangelion, Death Note, Hajime no Ippo, etc, should be much more realistic. More somber, more muted, more normal.

Back when I didn't know Japanese I enjoyed the Japanese voice acting more... I'm not sure whether it was because I was oblivious to the characterization or simply because I was younger and closer to their target audience.
