Ohhhh... don't start, guys. I didn't mean to open that can of worms. They're both good, but REALLY.

It's just that it's not good for the format we watch shows in. I was ready to leave the first meeting because everything's subbed, but the room was packed so much, people were lying on the floor, in seats, standing up, standing up ON SEATS (it's a big club), and there's me, in the back, can't see shit captain because the bottom 1/3rd of the screen is being blocked by at least 50 people's heads. I missed 3 shows that way. Now I just make sure I get there extra early so I can sit in front.

i watched Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion dubbed first and enjoyed both. The VA was comparatively excellent in those two. Spike and Shinji both are done really well by the english VAs. and BECK has an amazing dub, i refuse to watch it any other way.

however almost everything else i've watched subbed because as stated above, a lot of English VA sounds "cartoonish" or is just bad. with Japanese i can't tell the difference anyways so it will always sound "natural" to my ears.

it depends a lot on which you watch first, but for some shows i don't understand how people can watch the dub and enjoy it.

And the high-pitched nasal squeaking/squealing for female characters by Japanese VAs isn't just totally retarded and cartoonish to anyone? Uh huh. It's like a thousand chalkboards with theramins in the background.

excluding cowboy bebop and fma i find subs better than dubs .to often subs use sub par va's.I would rather read subs that listen to crappy voices.

I got season 2 of GetBackers like a week ago from Rightstuf. I'm kinda putting it off, since I don't want it to end. :p

Man... I loved Hellsing Ultimate Vol. 4. A lot more story this time around, which certainly isn't a bad thing. I'm almost glad it took so long in a way, because now there's a shorter wait for Vol. 5.

Heh, I feel the same way about the Ranma manga. I've read every volume except the last.

which fansub group to watch Gundam 00 S2 in? nyoron, shinsen, conclave-mendoi, gSS, gg-bSS?

i watched conclave for season one and thought it was fine

For season one I used Conclave-mendoi and the Nyoro for parts of it, but recently I downloaded the avi versions for a few eps I missed from Conclave-Mendoi and compared them, Jesus it was like night and day at times. Episode 25 got a very different translation from them then what Nyoro put out. I did notice the CM version made more sense at times

atm, I'm dling the nyoron subs. Their subs are fine, I think. Frm the little Japanese I know, their translation seems to run close with my in head translation.

Though I have to wait a little longer for their lower quality vids, it's worth it. I unfortunately can't play the higher resolution hi-def files without lagging and sound going out of sync.

Someone make a General Anime thread, please. LP seems to be enforcing unified threads.

initial d is horrible dubbed same thing for naruto even though i dont know japanese i think you miss alot of the overall story and some of he subtler things in an anime when you choose dubs over subs. not to mention how long it takes for many series to get dubbed in english. btw any of you like the xxxholic series?

Uh... how? You're at the mercy of a fansub group vs. a professional voice over job.
Uh... how? You're at the mercy of a fansub group vs. a professional voice over job.
true. sometime fansub groups can be ridiculous like dattebayo asking people not to stream "their" work .do they own bleach (or naruto )? no.so where do they get off telling where to post fansubs.

i think the importance of the dubbers is probably a lot of the reason english dubs are so bad. seiyuu in japan are probably better trained, higher paid, and more famous so possibly that can explain the quality disparity.

either way i just wanna watch everything in the world in its original version. i have watched vietnamese, chinese, japanese, korean, german, french, spanish, brazilian and more movies in their native languages and i feel that doing any less is a disservice both to the show and to yourself. expand your horizons.

Expand your shift key. :p

Anyway, I agree that there's something to be said about seeing entertainment in it's original medium and language, but the way people constantly bash american voice actors as not being worth a grain of salt while every other country in the world puts theirs on a pedestal is bullshit.

Got my first AnimEgo disc Sunday. I bought Total Crash. I haven't watched it yet though. I always thought my first AnimEgo purchase would be Urusei Yatsura.

that may have ben true earlier on but theres tons of fansub groups out there. most of the major anime series get fansubbed pretty quickly ( 1 to 3 days after the original release) when it comes to tv shows.yeah some of them can be douchey but then again i appreciate them doing what they do because if they didnt id be stuck watching dubs.

Thank you.

And regardless of what anyone says, unless you actually speak the original language, watching a sub is STILL A TRANSLATION OF THE ORIGINAL DIALOGUE and not the true vision of the creator. To say otherwise doesn't make any sense.

Unless you speak english AND japanese fluently, you cannot say a japanese actor is better than an english one because you really have no idea what they are saying. You could ASSUME it, but you really don't know.

That isn't to say there aren't bad actors/performances/translations. I'm a dub fan but you couldn't pay me to listen to the dub of Green Green (or watch the rest of it for that matter). And I can't stand mispronounced names in dubs (Sa-soo-kay instead of sauce-kay in Ranma 1/2 for example).

I just find it funny that the most negative opions of dubs are from those that don't even listen to them for any appreciable amount of time, if at all.

This is so untrue that I don't even know where to begin. The quality of a dub almost *always* comes down to who is directing it. But even that's becoming a moot point, because these days, bad dubs are in the minority. It's fine if you want to stick with the subtitled version, but the days of atrocious dubs are far, far behind us now.
Enough Sub vs. Dub drama, back to discussing shows.
Yeah that horse has been dead for a long time. For whoever got through Macross Frontier, how did it stand up to Macross?
Why? This is still anime discussion and it is interesting.
Its an argument that goes nowhere fast, I have yet to see anybody change their stance after viewing a few dozen of these discussions and it all boils down to its just an opinion, we should all come together and embrace our fellow anime brother, it matters not how you watch it just that you watch it :grouphug: ;)

Its not about changing your stance! Its about attempting to understand the other person's point of view. You don't have to agree with it, but I always like to see people's reasons for liking one or the other. When things start to heat up, which they haven't and didn't appear to be going in that direction, imo, it's even better, because then you can skip past the being polite bullshit and get right to the point.

No, it really does go nowhere. You either like dubs, subs, or both. And if neither, why are you here. :p

At any rate I saw a couple of good things last Friday, but I'll probably never sit down and watch them on my own. Partially because I didn't catch the names of any of them.

The one where the kid carves a girl out of a cut down spirit tree and a forest goddess inhabits it was pretty good. The one where everyone dies in the first episode was sort of meh, but I want to see how they pull off the next episode with no cast. The bishounen demon butler and the creepy ass demonspawn was hilarious. I might actually try to find that one. Tales of the Abyss was cliche crap. I don't remember the rest.

I'm still new to anime :(

Just finished my first series' ever, Gungrave and FullMetal Alchemist, both great. I'll also start watching Cowboy Bebop. Anything else to keep an eye out for (looking at Death Note).

Find Monster if you can. It holds its own with any show (anime or non-anime) ever made.

You started off with some good shows. FullMetal Alchemist is one of the few shows that I can laugh out loud at and get teary-eyed at. It really grabs your emotions.

While I haven't watched a lot of Death Note, the premise is really interesting.
Watched two THORA releases: Macross Zero and The Place Promised in Our Early Days

Both were golden.
The Place Promised in Our Early Days is an awesome movie. You should check out Shinkai's other two movies (voices of a distant star and 5 centimeters per second).

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is a solid series. I prefer the second season (SAC 2nd GIG) to the first, but both are tops.

Honey and Clover is a nice, fun series. Probably my favorite "slice of life" anime.

Black Lagoon is a recent favorite. It's a modern take on pirates.

(I prefer manga. So, if you ever need any recommendations, I could give you a much better selection.)

hana yori dango is a good series too but the ending is a bit of a letdown but you can watch the japanese live action version which is awesome both in show and in ending.

I can agree that the 1st season of the live action was great. The second season I was mostly doing a "wtf?"

huh thats weird cause i didnt like the first season as much as the second one. in the end though you have to admit the live action series handled the ending alot better you dont feel like you got a halfassed awnser to the big question. now im just waiting for the movie to come out in america somewhere.

i think they must have gotten a bigger budget the second season because alot of stuff improved ( sets , wardrobes ,ect) but with how they mixed up alot of the anime elements throughout the 2 seasons ( mixing sometimes 2 or 3 episodes into one tv show) i can se how youd say wtf i know i did with the first season.

no im thinking about looking into the live acion version of the female teacher whose a yakuza. gokusen i think its called.

btw for any of you who are fans of intital d dont bother seeing the live action movie its horrible.

Anyone check out Michiko To Hatchin?

A really new anime out in Japan right now, and its first episode just debuted this month. What attracted me to it is how different it is from your typical anime. For one it seems to take place in some of the more gritty towns of what appears to be Brazil, quite a departure from the usual European and Asian setting. The main character along with many other inhabitants of the world appear to be of African descent. Another cool fact is that it's being done by the creators of Samurai Champloo, which is very apparent when you first notice its vibrant and hip style complimented by incredibly fluid animation.

So what is it about? It's about a badass criminal named Michiko who escapes a heavily guarded prison using a badass machine gun. The femme fatale eventually meets up with an adorable, little girl named Hana, who before that fateful day was tortured by the adoptive parents from hell.

Based on what I've seen of the first ep, I'd say it has a lot of potential.

ok i will now officially say fuck bleach. the way the end things in episode 167 was horrible. i cant even be bothered to watch anymore of ths shit.

I'm sure it will. My hope is that it will be a series that will have episodes that you can easily enjoy without having to study up on the show's history too much. Basically I want this anime to be fun-spirited like Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo, with just enough of an interesting underlying plot.

I usually don't like animes that takes themselves too seriously because they just end up looking silly. I guess there are exceptions like Death Note though.

The problem was what was supposed to happen about 2 minutes from that ending, but since they went in filler arc the pacing of it got shot to hell. Anybody watching the show know if they are out of filler yet?
