The Avatar thread!!! A masterpiece :)

I never thought it would be a giant bomb but I never thought it would make this much. I wasn't even sure if it would make its 400 million back that was spent on it. I don't know if I would say it was better then star wars. However I think I will end up watching Avatar more then I will star wars if it ever comes to BD.
Ok, just saw it less than an hour ago.

I have only two words: fuckING AMAZING.

Put Star Wars on the shelf, 'cause it can't stand up to what Cameron created in Avatar. And to think that many people, myself included, thought it would be a giant bomb. Oh boy I have never been so glad to be proven wrong.
i was excited even before the movie came out... look at OP...but when i watched it it also exceeded expectations

yup

Saw it earlier this afternoon, $8.50 for a non-IMAX 3D showing. The 3D was cool sometimes, distracting sometimes, and overall a minor annoyance. When it comes to home video I'll watch it in 2D. Of the group I went with, the split was 60% favoring 3D 40% against.

Effects were great, sets a new benchmark in that area. Closeups and large-scale scenes equally good.

Story-wise, fairly standard sci-fi stuff, heavy on environmentalism and anti-military themes. Better than I expected at least.

Definitely recommended.

I saw Avatar tonight. It was a good movie. Definitely not a masterpiece for me. Most of the dialogue was awful, but the story was alright. It was nice to see Michelle Rodriguez too. ;)
'Enhance'
You mean the "zoom, enhance" thing? That was a little detail that I actually liked quite a bit. Unlike, say, episodes of Law & Order or CSI, where they zoom in 10x on any picture and suddenly reveal clear and vivid detail like small text, as though someone just went out and took a brand-new photo of the "zoomed-in" area, in Avatar, when they did that, it very much looked like they just applied a Photoshop sharpening filter. It didn't suddenly add vivid detail that wasn't there before. It just sharpened it a bit, in a realistic way. It's little detail like this that make me appreciate this movie so much.

'Unobtainium'
That term has actually been used by the scientific community since the 1950s, and has also been notably used in science fiction before, as well (most notably in Larry Niven's fantastic book Ringworld).

Wow. That is all I can say. I had my mouth wide almost the entire time I was watching it this afternoon. Such a beautifully crafted world and it gave me chills up my spine. Bravo Mr. Cameron!!

I laughed several times at how ridiculous it was that certain things were occurring in this film.
No surprise here, the plot was terrible. The visuals of course were stunning, saw the IMAX 3D version. Its just like video games, this is a case of the visuals being so good they make it easier to overlook the faults.

Probably most of the audience made that conclusion but they obviously didn't show that part because of the awkwardness it would present.

Really funny thing, when that scene happened, someone in the theater yelled this should be rated X.

Well that sounds obnoxious...

I saw it on IMAX when I was home for the holidays and the whole time I couldn't help thinking:
"Ferngully: IN SPACE!"

......that being said, I LOVED IT and I'm probably going to see it again w/the girlfriend this weekend. :D

I thought it was ok. Tons of cliche's all over the place. Visually stunning, but that isn't enough for me to love a movie.

Me and my brother saw this POS non-IMAX and we both were offended by how shitty the story was.

This movie is just another Transformers2; people are too distracted by the pretty pictures to realize the movie is shit.

No. Avatar's story, while used before, makes sense. Transformers 2 made absolutely no sense.

Yeah, this movie was in NO WAY the shit-fest that Transformers 2 was. The story is thin, and cliche, but it DOES make some sort of sense. I just wasn't blown away with the entire package.

Have yet to see this and I'm curious, see it in IMAX or not? Almost 3 hours of movie, so does it ever get distracting to be staring at a screen that large?

I don't know if its the 3D or the IMAX part, but the film uses a very annoying forced field-of-depth effect. ie. If you're supposed to be focusing on Jake in the center of the screen, things to the side will be blurred. A poor choice when seeing all the environment is a major draw of the film. It sucks even more if, like me, you are forced to sit at the far side of the theater since you tend to focus on things to the side of the center when theres no major action going on. It makes this blurring thing stand out even more.

Uh, it's called vignetting. It's been used in photography and cinematography for as long as either have existed.

Yes, but what is the point of it when the IMAX screen is so large that that effect can take place naturally? It just makes it look bad and with looks being all this movie has going for it, that's really bad.

When done well on a smaller screen where things won't be in the corners of your eyes getting blurred naturally, it's a nice effect. Here, it is not. It's just distracting.

Although I appreciate Avatar's visuals, what irks me the most is the amount of publicity and praise that the movie is receiving. The people that say the movie is pretty... i'll give it to them. The movie was aesthetically pleasing and somewhat visually enjoyable. However I've always wondered how a true Blizzard/Square CG movie would be like in theaters. Their cutscenes are always very enjoyable and this movie reminds me largely of those.

My only gripe is the plot was predictable and boring for me. I'm trying hard to understand what's so great about this movie plot-wise from my friends.

I think it's an okay movie, but obviously the crowds disagree with that statement haha

Just watched this for the first time yesterday, went along with my brother. I asked the rest of my friends if they wanted to go but they all declined, which is understandable from the trailers. I wasn't really interested in seeing this at all after watching the trailers, it just didn't look interesting to me at all. But I love the Terminator movies and have a ton of respect for James Cameron. So between those things and how huge this thing has gotten I decided to check it out for myself.

Really great, I went in expecting a pretty looking turd but left really fulfilled, really just a great experience. I swear after watching it in 3-D I was left wondering if I had ever seen some of those colors before! The look and vibe of Pandora was just awesome, the CGI looked great. I agree with the comparisons to "Star Wars" and what that must've been like seeing it in the 70's. I am just glad I went to see it in theaters, watching it on Blu-Ray won't quite be the same.

Saw it finally last night in 3D.

I really enjoyed it, the story was a bit cliche and predictable. So I wouldn't call it anything near a masterpiece.

But it was good enough on those fronts, and visually it was amazing. Especially in 3D. It's not in my top 10, 20 movies of all time. Maybe not top 50 if I ever put that much thought into making a list.

But it's a very good and entertaining film that I though lived up to most of the hype--just not the extremist calling it a master piece etc. It's a visual tour-de-force with a servicable story.

james cameron just won best director for Avatar at the Golden Globes.

his acceptance speech was kind of odd...

Me and my wife just went last night. Really enjoyed it in 3d! Great movie but some of it did seem a bit cliche/derivative. Seemed a lot like a Miyazaki-type story line. And the tunnel thing they would go through when connecting with their Avatar - exactly like the Stargate wormholes in Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis - just different colors. I mean it looked like a straight up copy of it.

We both enjoyed it though - I wouldn't mind seeing it again. Has me excited for all this 3d home viewing stuff that's was all the hot shit at CES. My next pj will definitely be 3d capable! I'll settle for 3d glasses for now...

Nice. I think it easily deserved both those awards. Cameron doesn't deserve an award for the writing but I thought he did an amazing job as director. As much as I liked the other nominees for best picture I still enjoyed Avatar much more and it is kind of nice to see a less original/artsy movie chosen.

Just saw this tonight. While it was not the world's greatest movie, the visuals are stunning, impressive enough that the headache I got from the 3D glasses was actually worth it.

And it was still better than Transformers 2.

What I thought was wierd, was the fact the Imax theater I saw it in was 3/4ths full on a Tuesday night, weeks after opening!

*rubs aching eyeballs*

Yea... if you see some of the behind the scenes stuff, it is just amazing how he directed it. It is insane.

When I went Tues night there were only 3 other people in the theater with my friend, his wife and I. (granted it wasn't 3D or IMAX) :shrugs:

Oh yeah, if you're going to see it in 3D...make sure you bring something to clean your glasses. The glasses loaned to us by the theater had waterspots and dust all over the lenses, which would have made viewing the movie difficult. I always carry special cleaning wipes for my regular eyeglasses in my bag, which I used to wipe off the 3D lenses.
