Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Sadly, Blockbuster has cut down it's maximum trade-in value from $33-$35 to $25 or so and dropped all other values along with it. So welcome to the new world of Blockbuster featuring Gamestop trade-in prices (but without the Edge card and frequent trade-in deals to make it more appealing). Continue on if you feel like there is any need...

ALERT: Buy 1 Get 1 50% off sale through June 7th!

http://www.facebook.com/blockbusterinc?v=app_17037175766

Blockbuster is currently running a Buy 1 get 1 50% off sale. Below is a list of $14.99 and under games from the last sale just to give you an idea of prices. However, all games $4.99 and UP count for this sale. So, for example you could get God of War III for $39.99 and get half off New Super Mario Bros. Wii (also $39.99 normally).

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas 2007 and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Dec 2008) most Blockbuster stores are selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, Wii's, and DS's. They do not sell PSP's. However, they have also started selling other electronics including Blu-ray players, portable DVD players, and digital picture frames. As a result of not selling used hardware, however, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, most regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Featured Preorders
Most Blockbuster stores (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are featuring several games for preorder. $5 is required for a deposit. There are a few others in addition to what is listed below:

Multiplatform
Beatles Rock Band
Madden 10

:360:

:ps3:

:wii:

:ds:

They usually get these featured games in on release day like any other game retailer (though note - as of late they have been very bad about this and have gotten many games several days late!). Note that you can preorder just about any other game as the system will allow them to preorder anything they have listed (yes, even at regular stores). I have preordered Mario Super Sluggers and Dragon Quest IV myself even though they are not "featured" as preorders. However, if it is not a featured preorder they may or may not get it in, and it may arrive as late as Friday of the release week (postscript - Mario Super Sluggers did indeed arrive on Friday when every other store had it Tues. or Weds. and Dragon Quest IV never arrived).

Of course you can cancel a preorder at any time and get your deposit back or switch it to another game, even after the game comes out. So don't worry about preordering something they might not get - you can always switch it to something else. However, since I've always used credit for purchasing things at Blockbuster I'm not sure how they would handle a cancellation of a cash deposit. They may simply issue a credit to your account so beware of that if placing a cash deposit on a preorder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values
Trade-in price quotes will now be maintained by CAG Friend of Sonic in the THIRD post of this thread. The second post will continue to highlight specific games used to transfer credit from Blockbuster to Gamestop and vice versa.

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.

Remember to split up your orders to order $9 games in pairs and $14.99 games in pairs, even if it means leaving the store and coming back later.

My booty (ps3 all):

mirror's edge + dead space for $10
fear 2 + need for speed undercover for $10
red alert 3 + killzone 2 for $15

i may go back for the following (ps3 all):
resident evil 5 + silent hill homecoming for $15
Whaat? KZ2 was 19.99 when i checked today.

I picked up Pure and Devil may cry 4 for $10. Also I saw 1 copy of afro samurai ps3 for $14.99. Has anyone played it before? Is it worth the 7.50?

Went on an hour each way trip with my mummy to have lunch and go to Blockbuster. It was better than being hot inside all day...

Wii-Mario Super Sluggers 9.99
Wii-Scooby Doo First Frights 9.99
PS3-Ratchet and Clank: Tools 9.99
360-Eternal Sonata 9.99
DS-Madden 09 9.99 (woot, gonna sell this to pay for all the rest)
DS-MySims Party 9.99
DS-Lock's Quest 6.99
360-Top Spin 3 6.99

I was happy they had that much stuff especially since the friendly employee had his "stack" behind the counter. :p

If you called, and they don't know about the sale, then chances are there is no sale at your BBV, unfortunately. If it's on then they will know about it.

Well...I called a BBV yesterday and they said they werent running it. But when i went into that bbv, they were in fact running the sale.

Let's see here...decided to grab a few more games since I went out to hunt with a buddy of mine. Hit 5 BBVs earlier in the day. Snagged the following:

The Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass (missing booklet) $14.99 DS
Super Mario Galaxy (missing booklet) $14.99 Wii
Enchanted Arms (Complete) $9.99 PS3
Lost Odyssey (Complete) $14.99 360

I have been to 8 Blockbusters in the Orange County CA area yesterday/today, and I've had mixed results. Got
Smackdown vs Raw 09 (2 copies)PS3
Spider-Man Web of Shadows PS3
Overlord Wii
for about 30 bucks. I was hoping to have a little more to show for the effort, but got Smackdown to play co-op with a friend, and my kids are enjoying the other games, so I suppose I can't complain.

Yes, go in and check for yourself. You have the same area code as me (561), and I can say that the two Blockbusters I went to both had the sale. I went to the ones on Boynton/Congress and Boynton/Jog. Selection was pretty weak but maybe you'll find something you like.

If you're into hack n' slash games yes it's worth it.

I just hit 4 BBVs and picked up some stuff:
Folklore
Boom Blox Bash Party
Animal Crossing City Folk
Super Mario Sluggers

I'm bummed a little because someone snagged the Valkyria Chronicles I was watching.
I picked up Pure and Devil may cry 4 for $10. Also I saw 1 copy of afro samurai ps3 for $14.99. Has anyone played it before? Is it worth the 7.50?
I'm pretty sure Afro Samurai is $9.99 unless the price was raised recently.

NOTE TO NYC CAGs:

I hit up the 5 Blockbusters in lower Manhattan, and the two on 1st Ave are closing. So although they aren't running the sale, they are liquidating and that means games are 40% off. But 40% ain't 100%...

The one on Houston didn't have any game below 15. Your best bet is 8th Ave and 20th street.

And if you're in Brooklyn, 4th Ave and 15th had a decent selection all-around.
Might want to swing by your sears. They have it for 19.99 which is what I paid for it. But crap if it were 14.99 that would make it ~8 after tax paired with another 14.99 game.
thanks for the tip. i called a sears near me and the guy said they only had "dark void." ??? He didn't sound like he had a clue, so i'll probably have to drive there tomorrow.

@LakersForLife82481
Yeah, there were at least five copies of killzone 2 going for $14.99. I guess I should buy 2 for $15 just to flip it. Does anyone know where I can find a trade in price list for gamestop like amazon shows on their website?

Hit up a few BBV today and cleaned up, although I wish I knew of this sale as I bought quite a few games in the last few weeks from them, but oh well.

H-Town CAGers, don't go to the one on Champions Forest & FM 1960. Their selection sucks and the guy running it is a colossal d-bag.

Did you hit up the Brookhurst / Edinger one ? They got a new shipment of used games they were going to start selling today, just wondering if there was anything notable.

Are you sure this is necessary? The woman running the register seperated them anyways, but if I recall my past B1G1s, the computer does it automatically.... can anyone confirm this?

The computer does it automatically. I had one of the stores I went to surprised to see it work cause they didn't know about the promo.

Went to another BBV and picked up Street Fighter 4 and Red Faction Guerrilla for $14.99. Might go back to pick up some more games, I want to try out HAWX but need something to pair it with that I don't have.

This makes me wonder if i should go slightly out of my way to see if they are running the sale. I called 3 BBV's and none of them are doing it.

Too far out of my way :p
I live in the acreage/ PBG / Northlake area. Driving to boyton would be too much of a hassle especially if there are weak selections. But thanks for the suggestion, I think I will go look :)

Picked up:
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days x2 $14.99
Dead Rising Chop Till you Drop $14.99
Bully 360 for $9.99

After that I went to Gamestop and traded in one copy of Kingdom Hearts, Dead Rising and Bully for $37.80 credit (includes edge and trade 2 for 10% more promo). Not the best flip in the world, but an extra $7 and free Kingdom Hearts is good enough for me.

Wait you bought the three games with the intent of flipping for Game Stop credit, and you could have snagged an extra game with Bully for free, but you didn't? Were they literally the only 3 games in the store?

You know, you should've really traded in those three games for the 25% power trade towards certain game pre-orders, then just come back on another day and either cancel or switch the pre-order. Plus, the EDGE card adds another 10%, making it 35% total.

Anyway, has anyone else seen the Best Buy trade in thread floating around in the Video Game Deals forum? If you haven't, there's a couple lists in that thread of games that get $20 or $30.

If anyone wants, I could post the two lists, which I marked up with which games you can get where to flip for the most credit. Though you're going to have to really work for some of them. Like for example being able to trade Assassin's Creed 2, which you can do so by buying one of the games that takes $25 off with the $25 off $29.99 and over games from Blockbuster, then buy another $30 game and pay the $5 difference and immediatelly return it and swap it out for ACII, then trade it to Best Buy for $30).

If you do it right, you'll only end up paying $10-12 out of pocket to make $30 in BB credit.;)

If you end up finding any Wii Mario games, you can also trade them in for $25 at GS if you buy a new game and then just return that game later. I've done that three times without a problem and got $101 GS credit for all my games. Used that credit to buy Bioshock 2, Bad Company 2, and White Knight Chronicles from GS.com with the 25OFF code, ended up being equal to a B2G1 free. All three of these fairly new games cost me $37 total. Just have to be a little creative and this deal can get you high quality newer games too.

Checked out 3 more stores in northern NJ area and no luck in finding call of duty 4 for ps3 or Super Mario galaxy.

The one in Clifton off main ave had a decent amount of games but none I wanted. They did have a couple of ratchet and clank.

The one at Clifton commons did not have much at all.

The store in Wayne was going out of business so no luck.

Going to check another 1 or 2 stores tomorrow and than that's it. If anyone in the area knows where to find these games shoot me a pm and maybe I have seen a game you are looking for.

I think different stores set their own prices b/c need for speed undercover was 14.99 at one store so i had to drive to a second store where it was 9.99.

As for killzone 2 and pacific rift, both were 14.99 at one store i went to, but not in stock at a second store.
Did you hit up the Brookhurst / Edinger one ? They got a new shipment of used games they were going to start selling today, just wondering if there was anything notable.
I hit the Brookhurst / Edinger store yesterday. Didn't look like they had very much. If they restocked today, maybe I should go back!

Are the game that you guys are buying all coming w/ manuals. I noticed that I didn't get manuals for a set of games i got from one of the blockbusters. Do you think I should return those two games? Do you need manuals to sell them to gamestop and amazon?

i
to GS, no
to amazon, yes - they require everything - disc/manual/cover art/matching case even

All X360 -

Frontlines: Fuel of War + Stuntman: Ignition = $6.99
Star Wars: The Clone Wars Republic Heroes + Devil May Cry 4 = $9.99

Total of $17 + tax for four titles. Not too shabby.

You don't need the manual or case for GS, but Amazon you do.
BBV does not take returns unless the games are defective. You could try to return them or exchange for different games. You could also bring in the game and receipt to another BBV that has it in stock and ask if you can exchange the case or grab the manual since you did not get one. Your success for all the above suggestions depends only on the mood/benevolence of the clerk/manager on duty.

thanks for the quick response, nixmahn. i'll go back now, ask for the manuals, and if they refuse, i'll return them.

@papaasmerf
aw crap. ok, I'll see what I can do.
