Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Sadly, Blockbuster has cut down it's maximum trade-in value from $33-$35 to $25 or so and dropped all other values along with it. So welcome to the new world of Blockbuster featuring Gamestop trade-in prices (but without the Edge card and frequent trade-in deals to make it more appealing). Continue on if you feel like there is any need...

ALERT: Buy 1 Get 1 50% off sale through June 7th!

http://www.facebook.com/blockbusterinc?v=app_17037175766

Blockbuster is currently running a Buy 1 get 1 50% off sale. Below is a list of $14.99 and under games from the last sale just to give you an idea of prices. However, all games $4.99 and UP count for this sale. So, for example you could get God of War III for $39.99 and get half off New Super Mario Bros. Wii (also $39.99 normally).

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas 2007 and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Dec 2008) most Blockbuster stores are selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, Wii's, and DS's. They do not sell PSP's. However, they have also started selling other electronics including Blu-ray players, portable DVD players, and digital picture frames. As a result of not selling used hardware, however, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, most regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Featured Preorders
Most Blockbuster stores (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are featuring several games for preorder. $5 is required for a deposit. There are a few others in addition to what is listed below:

Multiplatform
Beatles Rock Band
Madden 10

:360:

:ps3:

:wii:

:ds:

They usually get these featured games in on release day like any other game retailer (though note - as of late they have been very bad about this and have gotten many games several days late!). Note that you can preorder just about any other game as the system will allow them to preorder anything they have listed (yes, even at regular stores). I have preordered Mario Super Sluggers and Dragon Quest IV myself even though they are not "featured" as preorders. However, if it is not a featured preorder they may or may not get it in, and it may arrive as late as Friday of the release week (postscript - Mario Super Sluggers did indeed arrive on Friday when every other store had it Tues. or Weds. and Dragon Quest IV never arrived).

Of course you can cancel a preorder at any time and get your deposit back or switch it to another game, even after the game comes out. So don't worry about preordering something they might not get - you can always switch it to something else. However, since I've always used credit for purchasing things at Blockbuster I'm not sure how they would handle a cancellation of a cash deposit. They may simply issue a credit to your account so beware of that if placing a cash deposit on a preorder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values
Trade-in price quotes will now be maintained by CAG Friend of Sonic in the THIRD post of this thread. The second post will continue to highlight specific games used to transfer credit from Blockbuster to Gamestop and vice versa.

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.

I also got email verification today from the Ebay tradein site that all 6 I sent in so far were accepted and verified.

It has been a few weeks so I'm tempted to buy/tradein some RWs again, but I was wondering if it really true that there is a "Store Limit" (not a "Personal Limit"). For example if the store already has 8 or more RWs, can they reject my tradeins?

there is a limit but it's handled by the computer so if u try and trade in a game that's reached its limit the computer won't allow us to and there is nothing any manager could do. I've had "friends" trade in multiple copies to multiple stores and haven't had any problems. My store can still accept 99 more so I'm in good shape. It's possible u could get an anal manager and will decide on their own they have enough copies but that is highly unlikely.

Did anyone else see that Blockbuster.com is including game rentals as part of its normal online DVD rental program? I just got an e-mail stating this. It seems you could join for as low as the $4.99/mo level and get up to 2 games per month (as long as you set your queue up properly).

For $4.99 (and up) I'm giving it a chance. This is way cheaper than Gamefly if this works properly.

where did u see this? i know they rolled this out in very limited markets but i didnt think its national. the website says nothing about it as far as i can tell.

oh, i see u said u got an email. i know they tried it out in the cleveland and then seattle.

The e-mail didn't say anything about being limited to any market, but I do have to admit that I am in Cleveland. I used to be a subscriber to Blockbuster.com, but canceled when they started removing benefits.

The e-mail worked for me. I rejoined to see how this works. I've now got a queue of 16 games (only).

This question is directed to actually employees.
Thanks
Um, if your store already has 8 of something I would trade somewhere else just out of common decency ;). I've never seen 8 of anything at any Blockbuster - and if it is was an exploited flip like that I would only imagine it would raise suspicion if you tried to trade more. I guess no one around me is doing the Rogue Warrior thing as I think I only ever saw 1 the whole time I was running around looking for B1G1 games. While it would have been nice to transfer some of my GS credit instead of using cash, it never seemed worth the trouble of waiting for the games, hoping they are complete, "training" the BBV employees on how to accept trades, and dealing with potential headaches from the DM. I actually gave BBV loads of real cash money this sale and if they helps them stay afloat then I'm glad since I want the B1G1 sales to continue. We've already lost the great HWV $4.99 sales and I don't want to lose BBV as well! Don't be afraid to spend some cash, especially if you are profiting off the transaction regardless!

As for the $4.99/month thing, I'd have to see the details, but if they allow games in addition to movies (and what about blu-rays?) then I'd even be willing to add that along with the Netflix membership I finally caved in and signed up for a few months back.

$4.99 a month and you get 2 games. That is a really good deal.

It seems others are not seeing the same offers in theirarea. It appears the online rental program for games is a beta program and is limited.

Of course Wet drops the day AFTER I visit.

Ok, so technically it didn't drop yet, but I did go yesterday. Tempted to make a trip this week to pick up Wet. I know I saw that yesterday when checking it's price. REALLY shouldn't though as I'm becoming funemployed on Wednesday.

Dammit, I would have loved to get Beatles RB, Lego RB for PS3 and Rabbids Go Home for the Wii during the sale... Hmmm... I guess I should test a few more of my games and maybe I can swap a defective $14.99 game for one of those...

These are $10 at Sears. I know that you are going to say that you could have bought them with credit, you could have saved $2.50 each game, etc. I'm just throwing it out there for people that don't know.

Was not aware of that. That works too, thanks. I almost never go to Sears, as anytime I do, the prices seem to be overpriced for me on their games.

I was not aware of that, but I do give a big "meh" to Sears clearance. To me it is the most YMMV of clearances. I rarely find anything at the prices reported in the thread (and yes, I have them scanned).

And as for using credit,, I guess you didn't read where I ran out of credit on the very first day of the BBV B1G1 and spent more actual money there over the next 3 weeks than I had cumulatively (over my entire life) till the day before the sale. So, yeah, $10 for a new copy would be way better than $15 for a used one - though I'd still probably take a mint used one that is easy to find for $7.50 (assuming I can swap out a defective B1G1 game - I may not have any though) than a nebulous impossible to find clearance item at $10.

So I went into a blockbuster I swear I've traded to before in order to drop off a RW and was told with a completely straight face that blockbuster doesn't accept trades, never has, and that I should go to Gamestop. The assistant manager standing behind the guy at the register nodded as they both looked at me like I was crazy. I decided it wasn't worth my time to try and convince them otherwise and dropped it off at another store a couple miles down the road without any difficulty. I swear...

Ended up with 2x Velvet Assassin that I had no use for, so I took one back to BBV. The girl said she couldn't do anything with it because I didn't buy it at that location. The next two locations I was able to swap it out for something more useful (Toy Story Mania! & Cars Race O Rama).

There is enough with the price drops that I wouldn't mind another B1G1 already, but I doubt we see any until later.

So I went to visit a friend in Knoxville, TN for the night, and when we took a trip to the grocery store there was a BBV store right next to it with a "50% Off All Used Movies and Games" sign hung up in front of it. Needless to say I checked it out. There wasn't much/left but old sports games and a few crappy titles, but they had THREE King of Fighters XII for $13 before the 50% off... So I picked one up for $6.50. Really happy since I've been looking for a decent price point on it for a while, and I never would have thought I'd get it for less than $10. :D

Right now, the games by mail is just in Cleveland and Seattle, though I saw something that had a tentative national roll-out date of later this month. Probably closer to June. The only real drawback is you're limited to one game at a time, no matter which plan you have. (They got rid of the extra $8 charge just a week or two ago.)

There'll probably be some sort of sale around Memorial Day. The calendar I saw said "B1G1 50% off (5/30)". I'm not exactly sure what that means... whether it's the standard sale, just worded funny, or if they're trying something different where you buy 1 game and get a second at half price. Free is always better, but not being limited to two cheaper games might be nice. We probably won't have any more info until maybe the week before...

Hi guys, just came back from a BBV.

Picked up a Terminator Salvation for $9.99 complete on the PS3.

Been looking for this game. I never seen it at this price before, so it was a no brainer.

Uh...say that after you've started playing it.

LOL... I know all the bad rap this game gets, and it probably deserved it all.

I've just been wanting to add another easy plat. I even played a little bit of it and wouldn't mind owning it for $10.

This isn't intended as a criticism toward you jiggy, but it's something I don't really understand. Why spend money on a lousy or mediocre game just to accumulate trophies/gamerscore? What's the point?

Well, my guess would be that he's interested in the subject matter...and that it's not JUST for trophies/gamerscore. I mean, I'd feel more weird about people who only buy games based on their rating. It's ok to have your own opinions too. Hell, that's why I bought LOST: Via Domus. I'm a fan of the show. It didn't really matter to me that it wasn't the greatest game of all time. Would I have liked it to have been better? Sure. But because of the fact that I already enjoy the subject matter, I had a good time with it. I'm sure the same thing holds true for Terminator fans.

I don't take it as a criticism at all.

I just played 2 levels, and I have to admit that I like it so far. It was pretty mindless shooting. For $10, I don't expect to have boatloads of fun. But for a title like this, I'm alright.

I'm a bit of a Terminator fan (for better and worse), but not a die hard. But to have this in my collection for 10 is fine by me. There was no way I was going to pay $15+ for this.

I've read the stuff on it. Apart from glitches, and complete sucktitude, I'm fine with this price point. Some games I just buy when the price is right. In those instances, everything that I like about it is just icing on the cake.

That is just a bit of perspective into this purchase decision. I'm sure not everyone would agree, and some might have other reasons. You do you. ;)

Edit:
n8 pretty much explained it better than I. Lost Via Domus... I heard some people got lost in there somewhere. To each their own.

Let us know how it goes.
Do you remember what store the Blockbuster was located near?
i got the platinum on terminator salvation, and i hated every second of it .
I've played a few levels, it seems okay. Pretty much just a poor man's Gears of War clone. The only part of the game that has really annoyed me is the fact that, when you die, it often replays the entire previous cutscene. That was lazy-ass programming.

And ultimately, although I'm a slave to Metacritic reviews, I think that, at a certain price point, reviews are worthless. I understand why it would get a 48/100 Metacritic score based on 50 reviews that all reviewed it as a $60 game. However, I bought it for $5. The shortness of the game (~5 hours) was a big negative factor for a $60 game. At $5, it's not a problem.

, I bought several games from the B1G1 with this in mind. Now, granted, I won't play a game solely for Gamerscore/Trophies with the exception of something incredibly easy like that Avatar game a few years back. Of course, it helped on that one that I was buying it to trade to BBV, so spending 5 minutes getting 1000/1000 out of it was a pretty easy thing to do.

But I also have a few young kids, so it was a pretty easy decision for me to get Where The Wild Things Are, G-Force, Monsters vs Aliens, Star Wars Republic Heroes, and a few other games like that. I spent a couple of fairly stress-free gaming nights getting the platinum for Where The Wild Things Are. Given that I just spent 140 hours or so doing the same for FF XIII, it was a nice break to spend 6 or 7 hours on a game and be completely done with it. My kids, strangely enough, don't want to play it at all. My oldest son has, though, already gone through the following games I got from this sale: Toy Story Mania, Star Wars Republic Heroes, and G-Force. He also just beat Planet 51 which I got on clearance at Target.

He comes up to me every few days and asks what I have next for him to play. Then he rejects 5 or 6 suggestions before finding one he likes. Ah, he doesn't know how good he has it. When I was a kid I had to plan months ahead of time, pouring over catalogs, to decide what single Atari cartridge I'd ask my Dad for for my birthday or Christmas ;).

This is awesome. CAG Dads are the best.

And some people might say that having so many games available for kids is bad for them. But I actually have found the opposite.

Kids often seem to be less compulsive and more balanced about playing video games when the games are readily accessible and the variety is good. It's easy for them to stop playing when I tell them since they know their next gaming session is not far away. In fact, they often choose other activities when friends or family are around since video games is so easy to do at other times.

Obviously there are exceptions, and maybe this will backfire on me someday, but so far so good.

For example, I brought home Imagine: Family Doctor tonight that I got from Sears for 97 cents. They played for a few minutes, pretty much deemed it to be crap, and told me to go ahead and trade it in. When I was their age, I probably would have been glued to that game. Even though I wouldn't have been enjoying it a ton, it would have been all I really had, so I would have soaked it up. But they realize there is better stuff, both gaming and otherwise.

Anyway, I know this is off topic, but BBV is fairly dead right now, so I think I am ok.

Tons of great PS3 and 360 games for sale at my BBV...just no recent price drops. Also, no sales or deals at the moment. The guy in the store said they may have another one at the beginning of June.

Still waiting on that Dirt 2 price drop!

Yeah, actually, for the most part my 3 older kids barely play games. My 10 year-old is on this PS3 game kick right now (where he's going through a lot of the stuff I just got) but before that he would go weeks without playing anything. The one thing that none of them are interested in is the DS. I have a couple of DS's in the house and tons of games and no one ever plays them except me - and I only do when I'm travelling . But then my daughter who is 13 just uses her iPod Touch (bought with the Macy's cards from BBV last year - to keep this somewhat on topic ;)) and goes on Facebook all the time. My younger son (7) plays Club Penguin on the computer and even though I have the CE version for the DS he isn't interested in it. It is all very odd... I guess they are so overwhelmed with video games that they just block them out for the most part.

And yeah, don't worry about going off-topic. I'm going to restart this thread soon so all our talk here will be like the last games of a console generation: overlooked and quickly forgotten ;).

I don't know if I'm months behind on this or not, but I was able to pick up Resistance 2 for 20 bucks at my local Blockbuster.

I've bought tons of games just for the achievements. Upping my gamerscore is just something I like to do. It started out as a competition with some friends, but when I left them in the dust I just kept it going. I guess it's hard to explain, but it makes as much sense to me as collecting games.

And playing so many games does help me make some recommendations at my job at TRU. Product knowledge is good. :p

It certainly makes as much sense as people who tried to "100%" PS2 games and such (and I was guilty of that on occasion). At least with the gamerscore/trophies you have something to show for that sort of thing ;).

I can honestly say that I'm one of these people. Although my GS is low, that's only because I only play games I like. I'm not going to play games just for gamerscore, but I make sure that every game I play, I 100% it and all the DLC that comes out for it. Take Lost Odyssey for example. You think finding all those god damn items was fun? It sure as hell wasn't, but I did it for the 20 gamerscore. Gears of War 2's level 100 achievement isn't going to stop me either. I'm slowly working my way to level 100. It's just something I do and it's really hard to pinpoint why. Unfortunately, my friend's made me add a ton of games onto my list that I have no desire to finish (but will someday!) so my completion percentage is only at a mere 68%... I'll get it up soon enough.

As far as Terminator goes. I've heard it's a shit game and my friend who plat'd it told me it was shit and he's usually very open minded when it comes to video games, but I'm still determined to give the game a shot one day. I'll play it for two reasons. One is I'm a Terminator fan and I really liked Salvation. You haters can keep on hatin'. The second is the 1k GS would look good =D.

@ iO - Your kids sound spoiled. =P But they can get you Gamerscore if you let them use your gamertag, so you might as well use them for that.

The weirdest thing to me about that subject is I've still got several PS2 and original Xbox games in my backlog, and sometimes I'll think about playing them, but then I'll think "But I won't GET anything for beating them", lol. Like the achievements are an actual prize or something. I guess the concept of showing them off to friends does carry some weight, but it's weird how unintentional it becomes.

I think the Wii even suffers in this area due to not having anything like that. Maybe it's more of a record keeping thing...and just having a single profile that tracks your gaming history. I'm not obsessed with gamerscore, but it's definitely interesting to be able to look back at what you've accomplished.

Yep, this is it exactly. I find myself not playing Wii games very often even though I keep buying them. It isn't because it's not HD or it is a "kiddie" system or whatever the reasons others give - it is precisely what you pointed out - there's no "record" of what you've done! So, on any multiplatform stuff I'm going to go with PS3 usually (which I prefer over the 360). The one exception is when it is an older non-trophy supported game, like, for example, Madagascar 2 from the B1G1 sale (to keep mildly on topic ;)). I made sure to keep a 360 copy of that one and traded the PS3 ones away. As for Wii exclusives, man, I want to play a lot of them, but when it's time to pick a new game I just default to something that I want to play and will give me points/trophies... It's just one factor but all things being equal it can be the deciding factor. That's the reason I don't play the DS (except when travelling) or PSP (never) any more too.

Sometimes it is just cool to see what you have done. Some of us don't do it to show others what we have done. Some of us do it for self fulfillment.

I don't have a 360, but I like the list when you go into the trophy collection. I like seeing what games I've played. There are a couple of 0% games on my list. That is because the game was horrible and there was no fun in it for me. And then there are games that are 0% or near 0, but that doesn't stop me from playing it. My current go to game is Motorstorm Pacific Rift (also mildly on topic I got from the B1G1) and has nothing to do with boosting trophies. This game is just straight up fun.

Achievements are great, except when they are annoying, and sometimes they are. When they get you to play a game past the point of it being fun, then they are worse then nothing. Most of the time, at least in the games I've got, they do seem to be fun, though.

I don't see the value in buying crappy games just for achievements. I like achievements generally, and I like that they show progress, but if they show that I'm playing crappy games to completion, then I don't see that as a plus. :) Also, this is in part because I don't have a lot of time to play games, so I'm not going to spend any time playing crappy ones just for achievements/gamerscore. Overall gamerscore means little to me anyway. It says you've played a lot of games, but I want to see if you've played the games that I like, and if so, how we match up on achievements/high scores. Also, if you have a lot of the games that I liked, then I want to see what other games you've played as then they might be of interest to me.

i almost got the platinum in hannah montana but i dont have 4 controllers :( that was a pretty stupid game to play as a 25 year old man but i am a trophy whore what can i say.
