Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Sadly, Blockbuster has cut down it's maximum trade-in value from $33-$35 to $25 or so and dropped all other values along with it. So welcome to the new world of Blockbuster featuring Gamestop trade-in prices (but without the Edge card and frequent trade-in deals to make it more appealing). Continue on if you feel like there is any need...

ALERT: Buy 1 Get 1 50% off sale through June 7th!

http://www.facebook.com/blockbusterinc?v=app_17037175766

Blockbuster is currently running a Buy 1 get 1 50% off sale. Below is a list of $14.99 and under games from the last sale just to give you an idea of prices. However, all games $4.99 and UP count for this sale. So, for example you could get God of War III for $39.99 and get half off New Super Mario Bros. Wii (also $39.99 normally).

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Gamecrazy or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Gamerush's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Gamerush store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (GR to GC to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from GR.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Many regular BB stores had a PS3 bundle available over Christmas 2007 and since then they have expanded their hardware sales. As of right now (Dec 2008) most Blockbuster stores are selling PS3's, Xbox 360's, Wii's, and DS's. They do not sell PSP's. However, they have also started selling other electronics including Blu-ray players, portable DVD players, and digital picture frames. As a result of not selling used hardware, however, regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- While many Gamerush stores have cut back on their new game stock, most regular (non-GR) Blockbusters have started selling new games. They usually have a very limited selection of top-selling new 360, PS3, and Wii games.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Featured Preorders
Most Blockbuster stores (in addition to Gamerush stores of course) are featuring several games for preorder. $5 is required for a deposit. There are a few others in addition to what is listed below:

Multiplatform
Beatles Rock Band
Madden 10

:360:

:ps3:

:wii:

:ds:

They usually get these featured games in on release day like any other game retailer (though note - as of late they have been very bad about this and have gotten many games several days late!). Note that you can preorder just about any other game as the system will allow them to preorder anything they have listed (yes, even at regular stores). I have preordered Mario Super Sluggers and Dragon Quest IV myself even though they are not "featured" as preorders. However, if it is not a featured preorder they may or may not get it in, and it may arrive as late as Friday of the release week (postscript - Mario Super Sluggers did indeed arrive on Friday when every other store had it Tues. or Weds. and Dragon Quest IV never arrived).

Of course you can cancel a preorder at any time and get your deposit back or switch it to another game, even after the game comes out. So don't worry about preordering something they might not get - you can always switch it to something else. However, since I've always used credit for purchasing things at Blockbuster I'm not sure how they would handle a cancellation of a cash deposit. They may simply issue a credit to your account so beware of that if placing a cash deposit on a preorder.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values
Trade-in price quotes will now be maintained by CAG Friend of Sonic in the THIRD post of this thread. The second post will continue to highlight specific games used to transfer credit from Blockbuster to Gamestop and vice versa.

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.
i almost got the platinum in hannah montana but i dont have 4 controllers :( that was a pretty stupid game to play as a 25 year old man but i am a trophy whore what can i say.
I have to admit I thought about picking this one up at the BBV sale but I did, in the end, pass it up. Well, actually, I did get a copy of the 360 version and flip it to Gazelle. But there are limits to my point whoring - it's one thing to play Up and Where The Wild Things Are but quite another to play Hannah Montana. Though I'd say it isn't that bad as a 25 year old - you aren't much older than her from my perspective. Then again, I always have the excuse of having kids to buy games for and you, presumably, don't. So I have no problem buying all sorts of ridiculous games as I'm "covered" by being a father of kids ranging from 2 months to 13 years old. Playing them, of course, is a whole different matter. But I remember in the past many of the 20-something CAGs were often embarassed to buy Bratz games and such for flipping purposes while I had no problem with that ;).

Me either...let it ride!!:whee:
Dood at the register at gamestop did give me a weird look when I traded in Imagine: Family Doctor DS, i wonder how he would have felt if I traded in the 'sweet 16' one.

I got a weird look when I traded in Hannah Montana for the Wii at Gamestop during the sale. Of course I would never play that game even if someone paid me, that's just not very manly, I understand if you want to play it with your kids, but playing it solo is another story.
$14.98 at Sears.
not all sears have it in stock unfortunately. so BBV is the best bet at this point.

Yeah I platted Hannah Montana :) I get those games for my kids but after I plat it I tend to trade it in a few weeks later cuz the kids have infinite patience and will just play dress up for hours. They find the costume editors the most fun from hannah montana to tekken 6 :) Recently I have used them for my farming/fishing exploits on Nier. Kids are great because you can let them play the games that are boring/tedious/mundane/repetitive/soul crushing and they will think its fun most of the time.

I have to admit that I have the plat on this one as well.

Young cousins came to visit me, and I brought them to BBV to rent a couple games. Unfortunately this was on their wish list.

I went and watched TV and chimed in when they needed help. Cute kids. Horrible game. Hannah was trying to get into my head with her songs. Almost got me, but my instincts prevailed.

If that's the case with your kids. You should go cheap and buy an original Playstation with a boatload of Acclaim games to go with it! ;)

I used to care about achievements years ago but then I found myself wasting time trying to find items hidden in a game or accomplish some stupid task, meanwhile I look over at my increasing backlog full of great games to play and thought this doesn't make any sense.

If I let myself care about achievements at all I want to get 100% of them. So now I don't care and I actually hate achievements (I always disliked the reason for them being a business ploy to get you to buy more games and for a particular system).

When they pop up they're no longer a cool I got an achievement, now they're just a distraction during playing. I do like it better not liking/trying to get them though. I see achievements as just a way to get you to buy more games you otherwise would never play.

It's like buying games and spending only a little time with each game. I'm trying to stop that too. I find that I enjoy games more when I play less of them and spend more time with each game, like when I was a kid. Only now it's gotta be a great game!
They have a gamecube in their room, always with harvest moon or smash bros usually. lol
Hopefully bbv has a great sale this summer again
That's assuming that BBV is still around by then. I hope they don't join HWV anytime soon. We already lost the $5 game sale, I don't wanna lose the BOGO sale, though I wish they would raise the limit a bit from $14.99 games.

I kind of go back and forth with achievements/trophies. I despise them when they put in those tedious collect-a-thons or when points are poorly distributed (see Saboteur freeplay targets on both accounts). Yet I love being able to see the full 100% for games, in particular Mass Effect and Brutal Legend, Just seeing the full bar reminds me how great my experience was with both those games. Too bad I don't replay those games because of my backlog.:-({|=
The weirdest thing to me about that subject is I've still got several PS2 and original Xbox games in my backlog, and sometimes I'll think about playing them, but then I'll think "But I won't GET anything for beating them", lol. Like the achievements are an actual prize or something. I guess the concept of showing them off to friends does carry some weight, but it's weird how unintentional it becomes.

I think the Wii even suffers in this area due to not having anything like that. Maybe it's more of a record keeping thing...and just having a single profile that tracks your gaming history. I'm not obsessed with gamerscore, but it's definitely interesting to be able to look back at what you've accomplished.
I kind of agree about the Wii. I will always think twice about starting a game on it simply because there's no point system. I mean Nintendo has the easiest sytem that could be implemented; a coin system where you can earn 100 Coins possible per game. If they wanted to go one step further, they link it to your Club Nintendo account so the coins mean something provided you had the code from the new purchase.

However, I will also add that once I start playing one game on the Wii, I end up going thru 5-6 games before I go back the the 360 or PS3. Right now I'm playing Red Steel 2 and I already see myself jumping from that to NMH2, Tats v Cap, Muramasa and finally MH Tri (and maybe squeeze in Pikmin NPC and Spyborgs).:D

EDIT:

To keep on BBV topic, thank you everyone on this thread. This last sale help add 32 games to my backlog.

Some of my more appreciated finds were

360
Just Cause (keeping me from buying the sequel until a lower pricepoint)
Viva Pinata 1 & 2 (both complete, with VP1 in its original funky package)
Overlord I & II
Lost Odyssey (in a BBV case, but at least the case was designed to hold four discs, original artwork)
Marvel UA
PS2
Robotech Invasion (yes, I really do love Robotech that much to buy a game I have for the OG xbox)
Wii
Manhunt 2
Onechanbara BZS
PS3
Brutal Legend (yes, another double dip)
Spiderman WOS
Blockbuster is trying out a new game sale. B1G1 games $30+.

I don't remember the exact dates off hand, but I know it's supposed to start 5/18, run til sometime in June. Then the $14.99 and under starts and runs til early July.
Does anyone actually believe this? They are going to start running B1G1 sales every other month and increase the the amount of games eligible? Either BB is using us to get some quick cash or that is a lie/rumor.

but... but ... wheres the new rogue warrior?!

off topic, but hawaii boy who is the biggest isp down there, Do you have like time warner or comcast or something, i of course am assuming you live in hawaii

The biggest is Time Warner, and then Hawaiian Telcom . At least that's what I thought while living there for couple months.

Hopefully that B1G1 on $30+ is true. I'll probably stop by the BBV right by my house on Tuesday and check it out.

I wouldn't be shocked if it happened. From my experience nobody ever buys games from Blockbuster at normal price. People go there to rent not to pay $30-$50 for games.

But if they are doing $14.99 and under, then $29.99 and over, why not just do it on all games? That way they are more likely to get some casual shoppers to pair $40 games with $20 games, making more for BBV. It would get really confusing if they start doing things other than $14.99 and under. That is bad enough as it is at some stores ;).

True, and we'd have even more opportunities for flips. I could really use some since all the gamestop.com sales took out all my credit. I'm down to the last $13 of it

Regardless I'm glad to see any sort of B1G1 free sale back at BBV. Hopefully there are good bargins to be had.

Whoops. I didn't read it correctly. I thought it said $30 and under, not $30 and above. That doesn't make sense then.

$30 and under would make sense to me.

It was in a document from my DM, and I'm pretty sure it came from someone above him since nothing was misspelled.

Other highlights include preorders for Twilight: Eclipse starting in September. Shoot me now.

It makes sense to do a 14.99 and under and a 29.99 and over because they are different price points and they could evenly judge the two sales to see which ones make the most sense and should be in a regular rotation. I could see it happening if someone is trying to get a little creative. There is a lot of stuff that sits there for $30+ and no one buys it because they are everywhere else buying used games for $30+. You don't go to BBV for a used game that is $30+, you go for the game you find for $5-15. They could change that with this sale if they are smart.

I suppose... I've just never really heard of anything in the history of game sales like this. I mean, a $30 and over B1G1? That is just plain odd. Those things are always "and under". Well, I'm sure there will be deals to be had either way, though I think $30 and over will actually be somewhat less useful. I mean, if they really stick to $30 (and not $29.99) then that really means $34.99 and over, with most of it being $49.99 and $54.99. And even at half price there are few deals to be had for most of what they have at that price point, unless they start converting some new releases - then the problem is finding them in pairs.

Why would they liquidate their newer inventory? Makes little business sense - OH right blockbuster, I guess this thing is definitely going to happen.

B1G1 on $29.99 and above wouldnt be to bad though seeing people usually never buy games there that arent $14.99 and under and the more expensive used titles sit in limbo for months until they hit a cheap price...So moving used inventory period would help them.

Because nobody buys them. Pick a blockbuster and go every week. You will see the same titles sitting there every time. Would you rather someone buy a game and get one free at $49.99 or just have it sit around until it is $14.99 and sell it then, most likely during a B1G1 anyways.

Seems like it would make more sense to do the B1G1 on more expensive games.

Wow, this would be too good to be true. There are def. a couple games I would pick up like Dante's Inferno and Borderlands, that my BB has for like $35 or $39.99.
Hope it happens soon.

I personally think that no sale will transpire as Hawaiiboy is our BBV-god in terms of information being passed on. If Hawaiiboy says it's going to rain at BBV tomorrow, I would bring my umbrella.

B1G1 $29.99 and under would make sense if they found the B1G1 $14.99 and under to be highly successful. I think you could make an argument for nearly any type of sale they could do though because they are not doing as well on the pre-owned video game sales as they should so they clearly need to try SOMETHING or anything. But this is the same company that sat on the TIV of Rogue Warrior, Race Pro, Cranium Bukkake, etc. long enough to lose some money on those deals.

I hope it is true....I would love to use the rest of my BBV credit. We would need some good flips. I know for $30+ games, I could trade some towards the Red Dead deal at Gamestop.

if this new sale goes down, DO NOT post it to slickdeals. great deals should be for actual gamers and not the scumbags who have been raiding kmart and toysrus,
