Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Notable used game price drops

CAG Hawaiiboy let us know that a few notable games have had used price drops at Blockbuster. For the 360, Dirt 2, Mass Effect 2, and Operation Flashpoint are all now $9.99. Mass Effect 2, in particular, should be pretty easy to find as most stores seemed to have multiple used copies at $19.99 a few weeks ago. Please note that even though you may find a fairly mint and otherwise complete copy, you most likely won't get the Cerberus Network code along with it as these seem to have been removed by corporate before sending the games to the stores for rental. So if you want the free DLC that comes along with that you may just be better off buying a new copy for $19.99 somewhere. But if you already have the Cerberus code or just don't care for the DLC then this is a great deal.

Buy 1 Get 1 free on used games $14.99 and under is now over...

Below is a list of $14.99 and under games at Blockbuster that would qualify for the deal, were it still running...

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Amazon or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Blockbuster's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Blockbuster store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (BBVto Amazon to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from BBV.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Most regular Blockbuster stores do not sell new hardware at all. They did a year ago or so and some may still have some of that stock, but they have stopped bringing in more to sell. They also no longer sell new games except for a few selected preorders. Regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.

OK, well, I thought TheAnomaly and hawaiiboy just said they were sending pretty much all the used stuff to this third party? So which is it? If they do that they can't have a B1G1 - unless it is just select stores.

So here's my experience today.

Store #1, my local store, said there's a pull but they aren't allowed to do it till later this week. I got a Wii Lego Rock Band and a PS3 GT5 Prologue there using the B1G1 50% off deal. So at this point I only have $20 left on my Value card from the SMG2 trade-ins. BTW, I noticed my SMG2 was on the floor for sale for $44.99. They don't have too much else at this store, anyway, but do still have 2 x 360 Lego Rock Band and a few other $9.99 games that I would snag during a B1G1 for sure. I'll have to see if they are all gone later this week.

Store #2 is one of the bigger ones around and had a pretty good selection during the B1G1. When I walked in, they were in the process of pulling rentals, tagging them with used price stickers, and putting them in the B1G1 50% sale bins! So at this point I'm thinking maybe the used game liquidation is a regional thing or some stores are excluded. Just to be safe, though, I liberated 5 x Wii Lego RB and a PS3 Lego RB from potential purgatory via the liquidator, using up the rest of my credit and then some.

Store #3 has a bin with just garbage 360 games and the B1G1 50% off sign. The shelves that were full of used games are pretty much empty with just a handful of things left like God of War III. Ruh-roh... I notice the manager is behind the counter with a cart full of games. I asked if they were for sale and he said sure, but they were getting sent away tomorrow. So I bought 5 more Wii LRB and a TSM. Lots of other goodies for any future B1G1 were being sent away including Zelda Spirit Tracks, M&L Bowser's Inside story, etc. It seemed it was all of the DS and Wii games and all the PS3 stuff under $29.99. There were no 360 games but maybe he just hadn't gotten to those yet. He said "we get a pretty good deal on these liquidations" so take that as you may. I wonder if BBV really gets a better return than during the B1G1 sale - or if this is just a quick cash grab to forestall the end just a bit longer...

In any case, I figure the other stores just weren't on top of things and that pretty much all the cheap stuff will be gone this week thus making a B1G1 as soon as this month, anyway, rather pointless. If certain stores get to keep their stock, though, then it could still be a good sale but it will be feast or famine, that's for sure! As it is we get people complaning that their BBVs never have any good used games. Imagine how it will be if most stores have their used games liquidated but some are goldmines.

On Saturday I was at the store with the best selection of all and they had even MORE games than during the last B1G1. I'd say it looked like they had gotten stuff transferred in from other stores. It would be pretty stupid for them to then turn around and ship all of that away. I guess I'll find out if/when the B1G1 starts - I'll be checking that store out ASAP.

"Trade 2 games and get New Releases and Pre-Orders for $29.99 til September 5th (subject to change)

Due to rampant abuse, this deal will be ended early. It was scheduled to last until September."

In being all nostalgic, oh how this was such a great trade in deal.... and you got the trade in value off of the 29.99 price tag! Dragon Quest VIII for 10 bucks (bought games included). Wow, just wow!
tsm = what
Toy Story Mania for the Wii. It has been a B1G1 staple for a few weeks now (last day of the regular B1G1 and during the current B1G1 50% off). Most stores had many copies of it converted in the last few weeks.

And yeah, I guess the B1G1 50% off is now over, 'cept in Hawaii, right? I guess I'll remove it from the OP. I predict this thread will become like a graveyard again...

mastagoalie - I don't remember that one getting ended early (unlike, say, the trade 3 get any used game for $4.99 which ended very quickly due to re-trade-in abuse). I got everything I wanted and then some for the Gamecube, PS2, and even DS preordered at Gamerush during that preorder deal. Given the $29.99 price and inflated TiVs of the time there was really no reason not to preorder everything under the sun. Of course, whether they actually got the game in was another matter. But yes, one of the many highlights of that time period was getting DQ VIII dirt cheap - as well as Star Wars Battlefront II, Final Fantasy XII (though I never played it ), Rogue Galaxy, and many others...

Goin on a hunt tomorrow. So the best flip opportunities are Lego Rock Band (Wii/PS3) to Gazelle and Toy Story Mania to EzTradeIn?

Dang. Well, I'll take a trip to a BBV just to make sure when I mail out some of my other flips. If I can find a few TSMs it would still be worth it (15 -> 25 a piece)
And yeah, I guess the B1G1 50% off is now over, 'cept in Hawaii, right?
Not entirely true. Our store manager was talking to me today as I was picking up some final LRB/TSM and he mentioned that the last communications he received said that the b1g1 50% off is extended through the week.

He then proceeded to tell me that the other communication received requested appx 200 of the used inventory (majority of their used game stock, if not all of it) is to be shipped to that third party company that purchased all of the new games on tuesday. Sadly, this store is the best in the district.

Argh, OK, all the conflicting info from insiders is driving me nuts :bomb:. We've never had so much confusion over BBV sales before. the sale originally was supposed to run through next week anyway. So then they cut if off early to sell the game stock off to this liquidator. And then they change their minds on the sale and "re-extend" it (to the original end date)? That's the only explanation that would fit what all 3 or 4 of you insider guys are saying ;).

So I guess it isn't over. And in a sense, that B1G1 sale on $29.99 and over is sort of coming true now (except it is 50% off the second). I mean, if they send all the under $29.99 stuff away that's what it ends up being. Now, if they ever do a true B1G1 on all games there could still be good things to obtain.

It would make sense if each store is told to send out a certain % of their used games, and I think the deal continues for stores that still have games to sell while for others it ended today when they packed up the games. So my prediction is this scenario.

dyeknom's store packed up 200. I'd say my store packed up somewhere between 50-100 (majority of used games). Either corporate told them to pack up all the cheap stuff or the stores got rid of that and held onto what they thought could get them the most money. Hopefully we see some drops on the $20-$25 stuff that's left and the next sale begins or a B1G1 in the summer.

Yeah, but I think every store will still have at least some games left over (like God of War III). So the sale would still be in effect everywhere if they keep running with it. It's just that both TheAnomaly and hawaiiboy both said the sale was ending Monday (ie today, or yesterday, depending on where you are ;)). That was clearly in some comm...

Anyway, good luck to those who continue to hunt for games. I got a nice haul Monday so I don't feel the need to get out there the rest of this week. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Oh, if they both said that than yea gotta side with that. Maybe they extend the sale only at some stores or something but I don't recall that happening before.

Well, I made one final trip to BBV today this afternoon at 8 o'clock. They weren't doing anything with the used games, and clearly weren't planning on doing anything about them. I picked up the remainder of Lego Rock Bands for Wii there (3), Toy Story Manias (2 I had left because they didn't have any manuals), and one Lego Rock Band for 360 (since I couldn't find any better $10 title and I was on a time scrunch). They all rang up correctly after a barcode scan. I'll probably pay a trip tomorrow to see if the B1G1 1/2 off is still valid at my store. It seems like some confirmation would be appreciated. :p

Yeah, the whole situation is pretty jacked up. It's constructively ended, no doubt about it, because the stores are sending their games off (most, if not all). I know the manager sounded pretty confident about it wiping out his entire used game stock. He even made the comment that it makes no sense why it lasts through the end of the week if they have to pack their used games up tomorrow.

Anyway, he also said that there's absolutely no reason for them to take his used game stock when they didn't request almost any of the used game stock from the store that JUST entered liquidation.

Maybe they're just taking from stores that have a big supply of used games. Does anyone know if promos work on games that you rent to buy?

the transfer paperwork that told us what to do and where to send the games stated that the sale ends/ended mon 5/31. beginning on tuesday 6/1 we can start transferring games to this 3rd party and we have up until 6/4 to get this done. we got ours done today(mon) since we have such a huge game selection. we transferred 436 games out of a little over 500 we have in our inventory.

the stores that have no clue just probably havent seen the email on it as it didnt come thru with our usual transfer reports that happen on sat and there is always lots to do on monday so they never went back in to check.

some might still get in on the sale tomorrow as there are clearly clueless stores out there and they might over ride the price to get 50% off the 2nd game but the coupon should be dead.

this is just a guess on my part but they did this for some quick cash so the potential for a b1g1 at some point still exists but obviously the selection will be a lot smaller. i'm assuming that we will continue to do our usual game transfers every week to stock up once again on used games. we usually do 30-40 games a week so it wont take too long to build up our used inventory again.

So this selling to a third party is just a one shot deal unless they think they benefit and do it all the damn time.

I'm hoping it is a one-time thing. Didn't they make a ton of the last (real) B1G1? I remember it being extended because it was so successful. I really want to know the details of this third-party sale. How much is BBV getting for these games vs selling them in a B1G1?

Unfortunately the current sale is so lame (except for the first day glitch) that the sales numbers are probably pretty poor. Clearly they didn't think they huge sales from the last B1G1 were enough, though. Too bad...

i dunno. the last part was just speculation on my part. it would make sense that this would be a 1 time infusion of cash as it would make no sense for us to do our transfer each week and send them out week after week.

Well, as a former Blockbuster employee (its been 9 years and I still remember my 11 digit employee number), I hope they stick around.

My friend and I used to have a "enter your employee number" race all the time. Also, this dude and his bitch came in with a garbage bag and just started filling it up like we weren't even there. My manager was like "WTF?!?!?!?, Not on my watch" and as they tried to leave got into a tug of war for the garbage bag. lol.

Awwww, memories.
Maybe they're just taking from stores that have a big supply of used games. Does anyone know if promos work on games that you rent to buy?
The promos cannot be applied to games you rent and want to 'keep'. Believe me, I was going to try this when one of the last BOGO sales happened and I wanted one of the PS3 games people kept finding everywhere but around here.

I'm sure that if you get a manager who doesn't give a shit, they might be able to somehow override it or whatever, but as far as I know you can't apply a promo to a game you just bought out of rental stock.

Stopped by 1 this morning, signs still up in store, but the barcode scanned for the sale told the employee that the sale ended :/ thankfully, he overrode it for me :)

noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

I walked in to one store, signs were still up. Grabbed a TSM and 3 LRB (Wii) for about ~$37. My other store had signs down and the lady told me they shipped out 200 games last night :( Very hit-or-miss guys

That's an awesome story. XD I think I would have let them leave and got their license plate number, though. If they were doing crap like that thinking they could get away with it, I'd be afraid they were armed or something. o_O

So at the store where you bought the TSM and the 3 LRB did you need a price override or did it ring up automatically?

I think "signs were still up" implies that they had to honor it or it would be false advertising.

I went into a third store and signs were up. To my delight, I found 2 TSMs. Upon bringing them to the register the lady said the deal had ended yesterday and that I was a day late. I coulda fought with her about the false advertising (signs on the PS3, 360 and Wii displays) but I just bought the games and left. She looked mean ;).

And to answer your other question, I looked at my recipt and the 50% off was listed as a "Credit". So I guess he did that for me manually, which was very nice of him. Basically, the deal is no longer in the system at all, but some stores are willing to credit it to you since the signs are inaccurate (YMMV)

Has anyone else noticed that the game rental sections had games shipped out too? Like I mentioned earlier, my local BBV removed about 1/3 of the games out of the rental sections. I'm just curious if BBV will be getting out of video games altogether.

either this thread or the last thread a few employees stated that they were just sending out the games they had right now, but were not getting out of selling them.

Sounds like Blockbuster just sold the vast majority of their used game stock to a liquidator.

I was to a couple today and it was a total waste of time, they had like 20 used games and 7 of them were Bioshock 2 for PS3.

Maybe, and maybe not. But did your local BBV get rid of some of their rentals also?

Question: the whole SMG2 thing with BBV not getting copies, will that be true with all future DS and Wii titles? If so, combined with this used game liquidation, the future of bbv sales is going to suck.

not if we don't care about wii games, i mean who really buys a game for the wii anyways? :bouncy:

Wii and DS games are usually the best flip fodder. See Toy Story Mania, Mario Olympics, Mario Super Sluggers, etc etc etc.

No offense but what are you going to do about it if they do not have Nintendo games? Stop going to the sales?

I am interested if Nintendo sells Blockbuster all the Wii and DS games or if N just sells the first party titles to them.

What future sales?
I visited three stores and all went from 100+ used games to less than 10.... I've never seen this happen ... yes, last year they sent off quite a few but not 99% ... and more stores just closed ... they need cash bad ....

and the stores seemed much more open and/or empty of product in general ... sad really as they have some super great staff members...

Next round of store closings happening in 2 weeks. At least around here we have 2 more stores in the district biting the dust.

i'd say this is a sign that BBV maybe closing ALOT of it's stores if not all of them. I hate to see this because mostly i know it'll affect alot of peoples jobs and then secondly because it will hurt me getting good deals on games. Lets hope this isn't the case and they are just trimming some fat!

Is there any way to know ahead of time which stores will be closing Hawaiiboy? My local store has been around for about as long as I can remember. It will be really sad if it closes.

I don't think there is any rhyme or reason on which stores stay open and which don't. I know for a fact 1 of the stores near me that closed was tops in sales for it's area (while 2 stores who are 5 min away from each other and another 2 stores 9 minutes away on the same street continue to operate). However, like most closings, you have "big wigs" who are out of state making the calls.

I think this is a slow (and I mean slow) phasing out of most (if not all) stores. While not giving employment tips, I would advise any BBV CAGs to start seeking employment elsewhere (no need to stay on the Titanic no matter how well it still floats).

And I agree with you, it's sad when you go in there one month and the employees and GM are telling you "no we're not closing", then 3 months later you enter to see what they have on clearance.

I stated early in this thread when I was told by a Manager that there is no notice or anything whatsoever when these things come down. This manager told his employees once they got notice, they could quit immediately or if they wanted to take days off/show up late to start looking for a job/interviews and he wouldn't hold it against them. To his surprise, most stuck it out to the end (which tells a lot of his character as well as his employees..which BBV obviously doesn't care about).

As much as I feel sorry for BBV employees, I have no love for the company in general. They constantly dropped the ball. No NC-17 movies for a while or porn, handpicking what titles come in..leaving out alot of great indie movies, overstocking as well as their failure to embrace technology (website/Netflix/Gamespy) until it was too late, is why they're in this mess.

Game reduction confirmed here, just north of Cincinnati, OH. Went in this morning, and about 50-75% of the previous for-sale games were gone. Maybe 20 games left for sale, total. They guy there said they "got rid of" most of the other games that weren't selling.
