Welcome to the Official CAG Blockbuster/Gamerush video game deal thread.

Blockbusters Facebook promo page:

Notable used game price drops

CAG Hawaiiboy let us know that a few notable games have had used price drops at Blockbuster. For the 360, Dirt 2, Mass Effect 2, and Operation Flashpoint are all now $9.99. Mass Effect 2, in particular, should be pretty easy to find as most stores seemed to have multiple used copies at $19.99 a few weeks ago. Please note that even though you may find a fairly mint and otherwise complete copy, you most likely won't get the Cerberus Network code along with it as these seem to have been removed by corporate before sending the games to the stores for rental. So if you want the free DLC that comes along with that you may just be better off buying a new copy for $19.99 somewhere. But if you already have the Cerberus code or just don't care for the DLC then this is a great deal.

Buy 1 Get 1 free on used games $14.99 and under is now over...

Below is a list of $14.99 and under games at Blockbuster that would qualify for the deal, were it still running...

What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Amazon or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Blockbuster's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Blockbuster store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (BBVto Amazon to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from BBV.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Most regular Blockbuster stores do not sell new hardware at all. They did a year ago or so and some may still have some of that stock, but they have stopped bringing in more to sell. They also no longer sell new games except for a few selected preorders. Regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.
Personally, I think you are doing much better picking up Mario Galaxy for 7.50 than you are getting Halo Reach for 38. But again, maybe that is just me.
That's not just you; I definitely agree with that statement.

I stopped at a Blockbuster on the way home today but there wasn't much. I was tempted to grab Dead Space Extraction for Wii but they didn't have anything else to get for free that I was interested in.

Oh yeah, one other odd observation at my local BBV. They had 2 copies of LittleBigPlanet for sale NEW for $29.99. They just had them on the rack with the over $14.99 used games. I wonder where these came from? They are original black-label non GotY copies. Maybe they had just forgotten to send those back a year ago when they got rid of all their new games and they found them in the back somewhere.

Went to 6 different stores looking for Beatles Rockband and found some pretty good selections. Im not really into the flippin stuff tho. Ill leave that to El Hoardo but for myself I picked up

PS3
Wolverine Uncaged Edition 14.99
Avatar Free
Where The Wild Things Are 9.99
Pure Free
Lego Rock Band 9.99
Hannah Montana (for my daughter) Free

Not too bad still looking for a Beatles Rockband tho if any CAG's wants to get me one i dont care if its just the disc I can pay cost and shipping or maybe get somethin you want PM and let me kno

Damn this is getting to be BS.. there are only a small handfull still left around me and im sure those will close as well seeing the politicians love to tax the hell out of anything in my state...
Getting to be BS because its is starting to be the only place to get used games here is Gamestop..... And im tired of supporting them.

Eventually Im sure all stores will close and they will probably go entirely online if they can afford it but with the idiots driving the train like it is now even though BB is such a household name they will still fail....

Moral of the story - "it never hurts to ask"

I went to BBV 20 min away only to find 360 lego rock band and simpsons.
I asked if they had any more used games, maybe ones with out boxes, as another store let me look through their file of used discs. The guys tells me that I can buy any of their rental copies! Maybe they are closing? This is what was there to buy:
Wii
Mario super sluggers
Mario & sonic olympics x 2
Boom blox
360
lego rock band
Simpsons game
DS
mario & sonic olympics

avatar (1 copy for each system)

Alot of games were out on rental, but I am checking back ina few days. Hopefully the same guy is working.
Personally, I think you are doing much better picking up Mario Galaxy for 7.50 than you are getting Halo Reach for 38. But again, maybe that is just me.
i dont have a Wii, im not into motion controllers o_O, i have no doubt the game is awesome, ive seen friends playing the game

Chattanooga area is dryer than the damn Sahara. Of course I was pretty late to the party.

Was trying to find any two of these:

Endless Ocean
Godzilla Unleashed
Mario Power Tennis
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Smash Bros Brawl

since they're on the halo reach two for $40 list but didn't even sniff one. Hit hwy 153, hwy 58, ooltewah, cleveland, hamilton place, battlefield parkway, and ringgold road. Only one I didn't hit was dayton, but it was closed by the time I was getting around to it. I'm going to check it out tomorrow but not much hope at this point, lol.

I went to 4 more BBV stores today. I've been to 14 or 15 stores in total for this sale so far and only bought 12 games total. That's a ridiculous number for me. What's sad is I only actually really really wanted 3 of them (avatar, deadspace extraction, GRID).

Anyway, today I managed to find:

Super Mario Galaxy 14.99
Mario and Sonic Olympics 9.99 (couldn't find anything to match with Galaxy).

Endless Ocean Blue World 14.99
Iron Man 2 (Wii) - 14.99 (couldn't find anything to match with Endless Ocean).

I didn't even know that Iron man 2 was another Wii game that was cheaper than the 360/Ps3 versions like Prince of Persia Forgotten Sands.
Nope - I can definitely confirm it is $19.99 since when they got out the M&S (Summer) Olympics game for me yesterday they got the Winter one by mistake and it rang up $19.99. I should have just not said anything and maybe they would have adjusted it down. Instead, I said there were two versions and they might have them mixed up. Sure enough they did but the disc for the summer game was crap, so I just said forget it...
The same thing happened to me yesterday. I told the BBV employee that it might be the Winter Olympics game and not the older version. He looked at the disc and said, "no, it's the right one." He lowered the price and handed me the winter olympics version. :applause: He's a really nice guy and I really didn't care which version I was getting because I have them both already. But it's nice to get the Winter Olympics version for $5. :D

Okay, this is pretty insane. At one of the stores today an employee told me that they are expecting a shipment of 85 14.99 and under games. Yeah, I just said Eighty-five qualifying games for the sale. WTF?:drool::drool:

He told me that the shipment is from the same 3rd party company that bought up all the games. He said they bought almost everything from their store except "popular" games, hence why they have 5 copies of Mass Effect 2, 5 copies of Dante's inferno, 10 copies of Bioshock 2, and 10 copies of GOW III (that probably wont sell).

Ok, I just remembered another crazy story from a different BBV today. I walk up to the counter with 6 games (endless ocean, prince of persia forgotten sands for the wii, Tiger Woods 10, and 3 other games i wanted). All of these games had price stickers on them, and were on the two endcaps with their used games (no B1G1 signage tho).

When I hand the employee the games, he starts typing them into the computer and says in an abruptly unpleasant tone "Where did you get these? We don't have any of these except this one" (and hands me one of the crap 9.99 filler games).

I just left because there wasn't another 9.99 game available that I don't already have. I don't think he wanted to keep them for himself because if he gave 2 shits he would have set those good games aside long ago. I just don't understand how 5 out of 6 games have cases for sale on display without the discs in the drawer. Prince of Persia, endless ocean, Tiger Woods, etc. would be fairly recent pulls I would think. Many of them were still marked 19.99, so I guess they've been sitting there at least a month or two.

If any BBV employees can give me some insight into this story, I'd appreciate it. I was really disappointed because those were the 3 best games I've found so far during this sale and they didn't even have them.

Well, it wouldn't be just like Hollywood if they were closing some stores - they shuttered all of HWV after all ;). I didn't even read this yet, but they have been continuously closing BBV stores here so news of more closing is nothing new unless it is some huge number. I have to say, though, that if they are closing a lot it is really not a good sign. They got rid of the redundant stores about 2-3 years ago. I mean, back then there were truly too many locations and they were probably competing with each other for business and it made sense to get rid of some. It was annoying to have the number of potential trade-in and B1G1 sites go down but it really didn't make a huge difference. But there was one highway where there were 3 stores within an 8 mile stretch along with a HWV/Gamecrazy in the midst too. I know that isn't much compared to some places where they were every 1/2 mile, but it seemed like excess here where there wasn't much else along that 8 miles (mostly rural). They are now down to one on that part and along with other closings that is now the only store within several miles in any direction.

Then in the last round of closings they got rid of more that were somewhat close together or maybe in competition with HWV stores. At this point, though, especially with HWV gone, they are the only game in town in most locations around here. If they continue to get rid of "unprofitable" stores at this point, it is pretty clear the company as a whole is just not functioning properly. But I guess we've known that for ages ;).

OK, some quotes from the article:
Sources said the bankruptcy would take five months. During that time, the company would be able to shed some costly leases of its worst-performing stores. The source said Blockbuster would close 500 to 800 outlets.

So it isn't the end quite yet. It would have been more useful if the article mentioned how many stores are left at this point. Is 500-800 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 of what they have or what?

Netflix's success already contributed to the downfall of video rental chain Movie Gallery, which filed for bankruptcy protection for the second time earlier this year. The company, which also owns Hollywood Video, is in the process of closing its remaining 1,050 stores.

WTF!? The closings were complete and final last month (end of July I think) - makes me suspicious of the rest of the info in this article ;). That reminds me, I live near the HWV headquarters. It is somewhat off the routes I normally travel but I happened to be driving by there the other day and there was a big "For Lease" sign up at their corporate headquarters building and the sole vehicle in the parking lot mid-day was a U-Haul moving van. I should have taken a picture - it was really a sad sight.

Blockbuster also has been closing hundreds of unprofitable stores during the past two years. It still lost $65.4 million during the first three months of this year.

As, see, I knew that had been pretty much doing that for a while. The interesting part about the new closures is the "costly lease" aspect. So we could be seeing what appear to be random closures - ie, stores that seem to be doing pretty well but aren't because of the lease agreement. It was the lease that did in my Gamerush store about 3 years ago. It was the only one within 600 miles but fortunately that was around the time it stopped making any difference if it was a GR vs a regular store.
If you see dark void ps3 at $14.99, it's probably mispriced. Same thing happened at my BBC - mismarked and rang up at $9.99.
Yeah, I figured. Well, if I hadn't bought one for $9.99 from that GS sale I'd have wanted one. They had both the PS3 and 360 version for $14.99 at my local store - I guess both are actually $9.99 then...

At one of the stores today an employee told me that they are expecting a shipment of 85 14.99 and under games.

we got our shipment in last week before the sale started and along with the regular transfers we did last sunday we have i'm gonna guess 100 or so titles that qualify for the sale. about 1/3 of them are ps2 crap so while we have a lot that is $14.99 and under it is junk that i have no interest in.

He told me that the shipment is from the same 3rd party company that bought up all the games

that makes no sense at all. we sell them the games but then buy them right back. the games that stores are getting in arent from the 3rd party that originally bought the games a few months ago they are from closing stores. they come to us in the original stores rental cases and we have to process them and try to find cover art to put them in or they go in generic cases.

That definitely makes more sense. This employee i spoke with might have had his facts wrong or I might have misunderstood him.

Out of the shipment of games your store got, what would you say are the top 5 or 10 best games off the top of your head?

i wish i could tell you but the selection was so bad that i dont even remember.

madden 09, guitar hero 3, mlb 2k9 etc.

we do have dark void and avatar that we had before the sale started.

If this is the case, I'm not upset I don't have any stores that get such transfers around me. Sounds pretty worthless ;). Especially since I'm guessing you don't have lots of spare cover art laying around - so most will end up being generic. Bleh...

Anyway, I went back this evening and got 4 more games from my local little store. That makes 10 in all which is pretty good for a store that would never get anything transferred to them and hasn't gotten a single prepack since the very first time those got sent out. I'll probably hit up one or two more stores by the weekend and then probably just leave it at that unless there are more price drops (c'mon, Darksiders!) or rental conversions.

Dayum, you weren't kidding. That blows.

Is Sunday drop day? I can't remember 4 sure. When I was making my rounds a couple days ago, at 3 or 4 different stores the employees told me to check back on Sunday because that is when they do their conversions. If there is a drop on something like Darksiders or Mass Effect 2 on a Sunday also, I'm going to have to make my rounds again. What sucks is that by the time Sunday rolls around, I'd rather sit on my ass and watch Trueblood and Entourage.

I just mapquested out a circle of 7 stores I haven't been to during this sale. It's 50 miles total because the circle of stores is pretty far away. The more I think about it, the more it seems stupid because I'll spend a bunch of gas money and time for probably like 6 games. One of these stores supposedly has UFC2009 for 360 for 6.99, so that got me curious about whether they have other good games I haven't found.

Picked up Dark Void, Okami (Wii), and Pure which were all tradeable to Best Buy to get my copy of Splinter Cell Conviction (+$2.19).
Now I need to get another copy of Pure as I really liked that game.

Found another 14.99 game that is on the list of games for the GS Reach/Metroid trade in deal:

Wii Need for Speed Nitro 14.99

The only thing I could pair it up with was Iron Man 2 Wii 14.99 which sells for 30 @ GS so maybe the TIV is decent. No TIV listed on CAG for IM2.

I've seen a number of the Nitro's but they were all marked $19.99, is this a confirmed $14.99 price point?

I plan on stopping by on my way to work this afternoon and getting it and IM2 and I'll confirm later. Or the guy said I could get a 19.99 game and a free 14.99 game so I might try Darksiders PS3 and Nitro. Don't know i I wanna deal with the hassle of an override even if it was offered(knowingly I assume).
Yup...saw this today, as well. Granted, it could take months to complete the process, but this may be the last sale we see for BB.
Really though, if they are filing for chapter 11 there will still be stores left open. It's just that they won't be the crappy ones that are always empty. There are several in my area. Two of them are very busy. I could certainly see those staying open.
sunday is transfer day and monday is price drop day. sale runs thru 9/6 not sure if anyone posted it before.
Oooh. So we have two chances for price drops to "save" this sale and make it more interesting?

Scored 4 games at one BBV in Tucson, AZ
PS3 9.99 Where the Wild Things are (heard its an easy plat)
PS3 9.99 Bioshock
PS3 14.99 Army of Two (kinda high priced since its 19.99 new?!)
PS3 14.99 Avatar-the video game

Happy with my purchases all in all....

Nothing much at my local BB. Rainbow Six Vegas 2 being the best that I saw. Anything I wanted (Bioshock 2) was in another bin and was marked 24.99.

It's an easy plat but the camera makes it a little harder than it should be.

Is the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games the summer or winter one? Or do they both apply to the sale? I saw one version listed for $19.99 and hope it was mislabeled.

That sounds about right. I remember at least one didn't qualify for the BOGO.
The winter one is 19.99. That's another drop that I hope happens. Man, those 19.99 games starring me in the face are pissing me off.
Yeah there are a bunch that say FU" every time you go in...

Bayonetta
God of War Collection
Darksiders
Mass Effect 2
Killzone 2
RE5

im sure theres more ...

I tried searching and didn't see an answer to this question: Do BBV's that are currently in the closing process (everything on sale) participate in the BOGO sales? Thanks in advance...

No, unfortunately they do not. You'll only get whatever percentage off they were already running for the liquidation sale.

Yeah, which completely sucks if you find games that you would have bought otherwise.

Yeah that sucks. It takes them so long for the percentage to go down to a decent price as it is...and by then I think they just ship most of the stuff to other stores.

My local store got a restock and it was not all PS2 games. Here is my haul from today, and the only one that was there on Tuesday was Harry Potter:
9.99
Wii
Boom Blox
Raving Rabbids TV Party
Mario Super Sluggers
Destroy All Humans Big Willy Unleashed
EA Playground
No More Heroes
Cars
DS
Cars Race o Rama
14.99
PS3 Splinter Cell Double Agent
Wii
Mario Strikers Charged
Dead Space Extraction
Tiger Woods '10
Guitar Hero Metallica
Harry Potter HBP

So it is probably worth checking on the stores that said they were being restocked, because I was shocked to find the Mario games. I have also just been shocked at the variety of games available with this sale, if you want Wii games especially.

I asked the guy at my store and he said that they take rentals and put them for sale every thursday when they're told too. CRAP the one day i didnt check(yesterday) they most likely restocked. Just came back from the local Blockbuster and they had 2 14.99 avatars(360), a bunch of 9.99 dark voids(PS3), and a BUNCH of 19.99 ME2's and a 19.99 Darksiders(PS3). CRAP i REALLY hope the ME2's and Darksiders drop to 14.99.....Everything else was pretty much either crap or 30+ dollar games...

Great, in that article it says they will close "500 or more" stores. The other one said 300-500. And of course neither bothered to mention how many stores they currently have .
When they do the rental conversions, do they put them out right away? Or do they wait a couple days? Sorry if asked guys :(
Some of the BBV employees can answer this better than me of course, but I think it just varies based on the manager and employee habits.

6,000(?), give or take several hundred.
6,000(?), give or take several hundred.
Wow, that many, after all the closings that have happened? Well, then 1 in 10 is not too bad - I can live with that. I thought there would be more like 2000 at this point which would make "500 or more" quite a dent. They better not close my local store, though. With the (used to be) very busy local HWV store closed, BBV is the only movie rental store within 10 miles in any direction here. I know they do pretty good business, but I have no idea how good or bad their lease is.

Still, it is pretty shoddy reporting on those financial sites not to mention how many stores they have when saying how many will close. Seems like a basic thing to include to me...

thought i saw beatles rock band :360: for $9.99 last time i was at BBV...can anyone else confirm this so i don't have to drive all the way over there for nothing? much appreciated :D

I bought it the other day for $9.99. That and mario galaxy (14.99) was all I could find.

Actually, I have no idea how many. According to a Netflix article, they operate more than 3,400. I heard another report of numbers in the 4,000s. I heard 6,000 as of June something.

See, now if it is 3400 and they are closing 1000 as FoS mentioned, then we are talking serious losses here (and even less opportunity for B1G1 goodies). Oh well...

Ok Question I bought 2 games and one of them is damaged and will not play I tried to return them both but they said they dont do refunds and basically I was SOL. Is that true because that is BS.
