What is this thread for?
The primary function of this thread is to discuss current trade-in and sale promos, post any trade-in values you have obtained, and discuss new and used game selection and availability. Please post trade-in values with the date of the trade (or quote) and system.

It is also permissible to discuss system availability, credit issues, etc. As long as it is related to game trades or sales at Blockbuster it is generally OK to discuss it here.

Unlike more tightly focused clearance threads, it is OK to discuss more general Gamerush/Blockbuster issues here as well as trade requests as long as they are kept to a minimum (and usually just during specific deals).

Due to the questionable stability of the Gamerush (and Blockbuster for that matter) brand, it is also permissible to discuss ways of converting credit from Blockbuster to other stores (ie, which games may be used for trading in to other stores such as Amazon or EB/GS). As of right now, we have no indication of Blockbuster's imminent demise, but given Blockbuster's ongoing financial difficulties we need to be aware of the possibility.

What is this thread NOT for?
Please do not discuss the flipping of games from one Blockbuster store to another should another such opportunity arise (through trade-in deals). It is one thing to "play the market" with trade-in values from one chain to another (BBVto Amazon to EB) - free market buy low/sell high and all that. But taking advantage of loopholes in a single store's policies/promos is frowned upon and has, in the past, led to trade-in bans from BBV.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blockbuster Game Trading Info
- You must sign up for a trade account in addition to your regular Blockbuster account
- You must sign up for a new trade account at every store you wish to trade at, even if using the same main account
- Trade-in credit can be placed onto your store account or onto a "Value" card
- Credit on store accounts can only be used at that one store
- However, credit can be transferred from the store account to a card at any time
- Value cards can be used at any location
- Clerks at one store cannot see your trading/purchasing history at another store via your account
- Gamerush stores often do not get new game stock until the Friday of the release week, thus a few days later than most retailers
- Depending on state law you may or may not get sales tax added to your trade-ins (and thus get more than normal). You will always be charged sales tax where applicable on purchases, even when using credit from a Value card.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush vs. regular Blockbusters
All Blockbuster game-related discussion belongs here. Most threads created in the Deals forum will be merged in to here. There seems to be the impression by many CAGs that if they don't have a Gamerush store near them (see here for a list of GR stores: http://www.blockbuster.com/content/v.4.286.1.0/media/gameStoreList.pdf) then this thread does not apply to them. However, regular (non-GR) Blockbuster stores often run the same promos and generally have the same trade-in values. I'm going to elaborate on the last sentence as people apparently don't understand that when I say regular BB's have the same trade-in values as Gamerush that it means regular Blockbuster stores accept game trade-ins just like Gamerush stores.

The key differences:
- Only Gamerush stores sell used video game hardware and generally have a much wider selection of new hardware. Most regular Blockbuster stores do not sell new hardware at all. They did a year ago or so and some may still have some of that stock, but they have stopped bringing in more to sell. They also no longer sell new games except for a few selected preorders. Regular Blockbuster stores will not take hardware in for trades.

- Both Gamerush and regular Blockbuster stores take preorders for new games for a $5 deposit (or you can pay any other amount beyond that). Gamerush stores will get many more games in than the regular stores but unfortunately a preorder at either place is not a guarantee you will get the game. Sometimes they do not get certain titles in even if you preorder them months in advance. And even if they do get them, it tends to be a few days later than other stores.

- Trade-in values are controlled centrally and are uniform across all Gamerush and Blockbuster locations EXCEPT if the Blockbuster is a franchise location. You can tell from the receipt if your store is a franchise store. All Gamerush stores are corporate-owned so they will have uniform pricing.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current Trade-In Deals
There are no trade-in deals at this time nor have there been for a very very long time. They did however just recently cut down all their trade-in values to Gamestop-like levels (but without deals to make them more appealing as at GS).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trade-In Values

Trade-in prices are usually universal at both Blockbuster and Gamerush, but can be wildly different at franchise Blockbuster stores. Used game prices change on Sunday with trade-in price drops following the next day (Monday). Thus any quotes given in this thread will almost certainly be good through Sunday of the current week. If you want to be sure to get the same value another CAG has reported then do your trading by Sunday as the price may drop on Monday.

Also note that many stores will no longer accept video games without cover art. This is the official policy for DVD trade-ins but apparently many clerks will confuse the two and not allow it for games either. Just beware that it might be a hassle if you have a disc-only game to trade.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gamerush website
The old Gamerush web site is now defunct, but the following link will take you to Blockbuster online, which may or may not have some info there about games. I dunno - I haven't looked at it in years.

Finally made it into a local BBV tonight since I hadn't gotten a chance to since I moved. I was surprised to see signs for the sale still up. A manager asked if she could help me, so I asked if the sale was still going on. She told me it was and even directed me toward the endcap where the sign was located. Thrilled with my good fortune, I managed to find four $14.99 games I wanted to pick up.

Of course, upon ringing them up, the promo wasn't showing up. The cashier called the manager over (same one who told me the sale was still going) to ask if there was a code or something that needed to be typed in. She finally thinks to check her paperwork (which I'm guessing she hadn't looked at all day) and says "No...because the sale stopped today". I say "Well, you just told me it was still going and the sign is still up." At this point she flips out on me and starts shouting "Well, I've had 700 movies I had to retag today, and it's not my fault that the sale stopped!" and then just glares at me.

I looked at the cashier (who was just frozen in fear...I'm guessing this manager is a huge bitch and I don't blame him for standing down) and just said "Well, I guess forget it then." He apologized, and I just recommended that he take down the sign, and then I left. I'm thinking about contacting BBV corporate though. Not so much because I'm upset that she didn't honor the sale (although after putting her foot in her mouth, she probably should have). But more so because of how she flipped out and treated a customer. For a company on the brink of extinction, you would think that shouting at a customer would be frowned upon.

LOL The one store that I stopped at a few days before the sale officially ended said the 'sale ended a few days ago', but they told me if the signs were still up that they'd honor it.

I just hope this one further off store will honor the sale if I stop there this weekend and they still have the signs up, since I didn't get a chance to hit them during the sale and it'd suck if they had a ton of stuff.

I'm trying out the copy of Dragon Age: Origins I bought towards the end of the sale now. Although I just wanted to see if the voucher that came with the manual I managed to grab from a copy at GS is still good or not and it appears you have to enter it in from the main menu, since the code redeeming thing on the PSN store only has space for 12 letters or numbers while the codes are 16.
Just talking about this makes me sad this sale is over. I should have bought more at the end of the sale, since no one else was buying them where I was at. Last night I saw a bunch of God of War 3's, UFC 2010, Battlefield 2, Dante's Inferno, Crackdown 2's, 4 Mass Effect 2s (9.99 price) .... next time I'm not leaving these games for others b/c they aren't buying them anyway!@#@ The people in my area must be idiots. I would bet a ton of people bought these same games for their kids for christmas at best buy.
Well, as I posted a page or two back, I found that 3 BBVs were wiped clean of all of those games this past weekend. One clerk specifically commented that over Christmas they got hit hard and wiped out. So I guess it really depends on the area. It did seem to take a while for the masses to discover the sale, but once they did, look out ;). Aside from an initial rush of sales (probably due to employees and other people who know about these things I suppose), during the first 2-3 weeks it seemed very little moved when I'd go back to a store and check it again.

If there was no clear end date on the signs and they were still up they were legally obligated to sell you those at the sale price. Never mind that you even checked with the manager. Add the customer treatment to the story and I'm sure BB corporate would like to hear about this...

You can enter it on the bioware site too after you link it to your ea account and your ea account to your psn account. There was a glitch where if you did that it wouldnt unlock it in game... but they patched it and it properly shows on the menu now

I tried that. I signed up for apparently another EA account(had one already for Mercs 2) and still nothing.

I just find it funny that someone else apparently went through all of this rigamarole just to use the codes.

Yeah, I went ahead and fired off an email through BBV's website "store feedback" form, but I'm prepared to just mail a letter to their corporate address if that gets ignored. What was really amusing was how quickly her demeanor changed once she discovered she was wrong. Before that, she was acting all bubbly and friendly. But once she had to decide to either honor HER mistake or completely ignore the events that had just happened, her day was suddenly "terrible".

The really dumb thing is at this point, BBV needs all the sales it can get, and we all know used video games are not some hot commodity for them. So, rather than sell them to me and bring in a little profit, they're most likely going to sit on the shelf depreciating until the next B1G1 or until they're sold off to a liquidator. And furthermore, her actions will prevent me from giving that store any business at all in the future. Pride comes before the fall, BBV. Remember that.

I've noticed a much more resigned, "who gives a crap" attitude in all of my remaining stores. The managers there are usually just hanging on until the end, which is pretty imminent. I suspect corporate pretty much feels the same and will disregard complaints.
I tried that. I signed up for apparently another EA account(had one already for Mercs 2) and still nothing.

I just find it funny that someone else apparently went through all of this rigamarole just to use the codes.
Red Flag.
After dealing with this a few days ago redeeming the Dr Pepper content, it looks to me like you can only have one EA account attached to one gamertag and vice versa. I had accidentally created a new one when I got the NFS demo on PS3, but when it came to dling the dr pepper cars for NFS on 360 I accidentally used that second account (created on the PS3 demo) and not my original one already linked to my gamertag. I created a new gamertag and linked to the new EA account and the new gamertag got the content. My hope was that it would unlock the content for both gamertags, but it only showed up in the new one. Ended up getting more Dr Pepper (which I woulda gotten anyway).
To some extent I disagree with you here n8rocker. Everyone has the impression that BBV is in near the complete end because of the bankruptcy, however from the information available, it seems the bankruptcy will eliminate the greatest financial hardship. From what I've read, the two problems are outstanding loans which the creditors have agreed to work around and high priced rental agreements in many low revenue stores. The bankruptcy will likely allow them to break those agreements meaning that they can trim the fat, keep some stores open, switch to kiosks, streaming and mail services. From a business perspective, they don't need to beat red box or netflix, they just have to turn a profit. Certainly many people will lose jobs from the closings, but a good number of people will still have jobs. I guess what I'm saying is that the end is sort of a potential new beginning.
I've noticed a much more resigned, "who gives a crap" attitude in all of my remaining stores. The managers there are usually just hanging on until the end, which is pretty imminent. I suspect corporate pretty much feels the same and will disregard complaints.
Funny thing is, recently I noticed an excessive amount of good customer service when I went to my local BBV. I had employees checking up on me and striking up conversation whenever I went in there during the sale. Was the weirdest thing, because I don't think I have ever had an experience like it in the years I've been going there.

This sale was a good one though, I got myself GoW3, Bayonetta, Bioshock 2, and Dante's Inferno.

I thought that the blockbuster kiosks aren't under control of Blockbuster directly?

One reason why this sale may have fizzled is the fact that people in general have a stigma against buying used games to gift. Personally I would rather have a few used "recently released" games than one brand new "recently released" game when purchased for the same price. Also, most people think BBV only as a rental movie place where you can buy new movies for MSRP (cheaper to buy movies at bestbuy or anywhere else actually). Used movie sales also draw some people but again people would rather spend more and get new... I just dont get it especially with the economy the way it is. Why pay more for X "new" when you can get X, Y, and Z "used and guaranteed to work" for the same price as X "new".

This, and most of their used games are not "complete with art, manual, and SONY case" and collectors like me want a complete game. On the other hand GS takes incomplete games so BBV->GS is a viable option when it works out. FYE wants complete games too, and so do every other flip buying source out there.
What was so great about the sale? I missed out I suppose.
Several easily available filppable semi recent AAA action/platformer titles for 7.50 + tax. Not as good as the 1st one in the begining of the year (with abundance of profitable/flippable titles) but better than the 2nd one (b/c of selection liquidation).
This, and most of their used games are not "complete with art, manual, and SONY case" and collectors like me want a complete game.
This depends entirely on the location, though. Around where I am, the vast majority of used games at BBV are complete with original case and manual. I actually consider that to be one of the strengths of their used game sales. They are much more reliable on that front than, say, Gamestop is. And they are much better than Hollywood Video used to be.

Disc condition, of course, is a crapshoot. 360/Wii games can be pretty beat up if they were popular ex-rentals. On the other hand, you could often get mint ones if they were excess inventory and rarely (if ever) rented.
One reason why this sale may have fizzled
The sale certainly didn't fizzle around me. Local Blockbusters are wiped out of practically everything except disc-only Bioshock 2s.

Yeah, I didn't get the "fizzled" comment either. I mean, it sort of fizzled out for us because there were no new drops or major used game conversions in the last few weeks. But overall I think it was very successful for BBV. Hopefully that means they keep them going through this year.

I hope it was successful for BBV. I sure as heck know that it was successful in adding to my backlog. :)

Maybe in your area the used games at BBV were mostly incomplete, but aside from one game(Dragon Age: Origins) mine were all complete with everything. Even then, all it took was a trek to a GS store and asking the employee there if I could grab the manual from one of theirs to make it complete. I was there to grab a few games to send to Amazon anyway, so I figured I'd ask while there.

Although maybe your stores keep the extra real cases/artwork/manuals behind the counter at your BBV stores. You should ask when buying used games from BBV if they have it. If not, then at least you knew for certain that they didn't have them. Some stores will even let you grab their display case off the shelf in the rental section if you ask nicely enough.:D

Mine too. I picked up R&C: Crack In Time, Bayonetta, Dante's Inferno, Lost Planet 2 and Dragon Age: Origins to play from the sale, but also a ton to make a little extra scratch on from the sale. God knows they had enough copies of God Of War III that no one could even think of calling you a hoarder on them, since every store I went to had at least 4-5 of them.

hmmm... does beg the question though about how overpriced used games really are. If BBV sold them at reduced rates all year they would make a bagload of money. After all, they have already purchased them all and made money from renting them - you would assume this is just pure profit. Wish they would bump the price to 29.99 games - then they would get some serious money out of me...... Also, why can't they keep the bloody manuals in the games. They usually put them in a big drawer and then toss them into the trash when bored one afternoon. Crazy.

Thanks everyone for this deal. Every game i got actually turned out to be good & complete.

KEEPING:

Dead Space Extraction
MLB 2k10 (x360)
Dantes Inferno
Project Gotham Racing 4
Mass Effect 2
NHL 2k9 (wii)
Alien Hominid (ps2)
Prince of Persia Forgotten Sands
Tiger Woods 10 (wii)

TRADE FODDER PS3 GAMES

God of War 3
Bayonetta
Aliens vs Predator
Beatles Rock Band

Got some free movie rental coupons from them too.
Overall one of the top-3 game deals of the 2010 year.

First of all, I've heard varying reports over the years that BBV pays a premium price over the standard $60 per game new price in order to get them in to rent. I don't know how true it is, but if that's the case then I can see why they wait so long to convert some of them.

With Gamefly and other online rental/trading sites taking a chunk of their business I sincerely doubt they're making their money back on many of these games anymore, so again I can see why they wait to convert them for so long.

As for them bumping up the max value of games that qualify to $29.99, I think they did that once so far. This is why I really miss HWV, since their $5 used game sales were insane. You would get so many great titles that would otherwise be sitting at BBV on their shelves for another 6 months until they dropped to $14.99 and qualified for their sale.

As I said above, I don't know if it's just your store or not, but almost every game I bought during this BOGO sale had everything and was mint. But it's not always that the BBV employees 'got bored and threw them out', it's that sometimes people come in and steal the manuals(and sometimes cases/artwork) for their own games. Some stores keep the extra stuff behind the counter and some don't, but in many cases you have to ASK for them and not just expect them to put them into the cases when they put them out for sale.

Just curious, how often do they have these B1G1 sales?

I am not in the US, but live close enough. I also have family that live/work close to BBV in the states and can have them get me some games.

I was able to take advantage of the deal this Xmas, but missed out on a lot of good titles. Next time I'll get in early and get some good games.

Thanks guys!

Probably around April or May would be my guess again. It seems like awhile but the spacing is pretty good so that the stores can get restocked up again and some nice price drops happen.

For what it's worth price drops effective 1/10.

PS3
Bioshock 2 $9.99
Blur $29.99
Red dead redemption $29.99

X360
Bioshock 2 $9.99
Blur $29.99
Guitar hero warriors $39.99
Medal of honor $29.99
Splinter cell $9.99

Just couldn't stand to see this thread sitting on page 3, could ya? :)

Nice to be able to keep tabs on drops of some of the higher priced stuff tho. I'd love to see Red Dead hit that sweet spot just as another BOGO comes around ;)

Thanks Hawaiiboy!

Question I'd like feedback on: Do I remove the bogo-related tags from this thread? The sale is over, so if someone is searching for a bogo sale using the tag search feature, it will pull up a thread that isn't currently relevant to their search.

Thanks in advance for any and all thoughtful input.

I put those in there when it started up (after cleaning out all the inappropriate tags ;)) and I had forgotten all about it. I just removed them.

Oh, okay. You didn't have to though. I could see the merit of keeping them, as BBV runs these sales at least twice a year.

I was hoping someone would make a good argument on one side or another and well... make the decision for me.

I hope you took your trade-ins to FYE, b/c the online prices, at least, have plummeted. The gravy train that was Kane and Lynch 2 is derailed. $5 online trade-in. Same for God of War 3.
 I'm glad I got in my K&L2 and Front Mission Evolved trades to FYE when I did then.
Me too. Just got confirmation they accepted my 2 copies I sent in about a week ago. Pretty good for $16.xx in credit turning into $53 (minus postage/envelope) in cash.

My wherehouse account got flagged last week due to my trades being clearly flips. I had not violated their 2 per title policy but I did send in a trade of 5 different games with two of each in the same order. They refused the games and said they would send them back. Major suckage as I now have to find another way to sell them. So word to the wise, only send in 1 copy of any game.
I don't understand. Why would they ban flips? They're games just the same.
Same argument I was given a long time ago by BBV. The trade in program is meant to help consumers recycle their games and is provided as a service, a benefit if you will. It's just a BS cop out due to the fact they realized too late that the trade in prices on a number of games was too high, so they use the NON commercial clause to reject the trade. Whats really annoying is you need to send 5 items to them to qualify for a shipping reimbursement, which was why I lumped them all together.

They are total dicks... had two orders flagged, even though I sent emails before asking about them... last business I do with them

That stinks. I only sent in 2 K&L 2's, both PS3. Dunno if this makes a difference but I sent it to SecondSpin vs. Wherehouse. It was also my first dealing with SecondSpin.

I got stuck with them when my FYE had too many (four) so I figured I'd send them in and take my chances and it seemed to work out fine. I wouldn't have lost too much sleep if they rejected it since the credit was generated from a few GS FME trade ins.

It's likely that someone had to be the last one "in", that they got too many so some got the brunt of their wrath I suppose.

secondspin is the same way, 2 of one title ONE Time..no biggie...do it again...expect a return and loose your shipping costs...
this thread has really changed this option for members without store fronts (eg FYE) ...
