More on Masters' release - http://www.f4wonline.com/content/view/4460/105/

It looks like he was up to his fourth failure, which as noted in the CNN documentary last night, is grounds for termination. Hopefully Mordetsky can get his shit together and have a good career after this, because it's a shame to see someone basically throw his best chance at success out the window while he's still in his mid-20s.

Odds are, TNA will bring him in at some point. I can't wait for the Impact Zone fans to start chanting "you're on steroids" at him. I wonder if he'll last longer than one match in TNA (like Test), or if he'll go for a super-long run and last about a month like Rikishi. Since WWE's probably got the Masterlock name trademarked, I'm going with a TNA name of the Padlock for the move, and maybe they'll just keep his birth name and try and get away with "the Masterpiece" nickname for him. I can't wait to hear Tenay go apeshit over another ex-WWE act. I wonder which part of Masters Don West will think is fun to play with.

Some TNA news -
The Steiner Brothers will challenge Tomko and Giant Bernard for the IWGP Tag Team Titles at the January 4 New Japan Pro Wrestling event at the Tokyo Dome.
I'm looking forward to this match quite a bit. Tomko and Bernard are an excellent team, and the Steiners have had some good matches in TNA, and usually bring their A game to Japan. This could be a very, very good match.

Here's a bit of wrestling history, Bill Watts vs. Mr. Wrestling for the NWA Georgia Heavyweight title. It's the earliest known GCW on WCTG/WTBS match on tape -
I got to say, I wish that Chris Masters would go to RoH and bust out some crazy wrestling on the scale of Hogan while he was in Japan.
There's actually some RoH fans asking that he be brought in. Others are damning the idea to hell.

Personally I would give him a shot just to see what he could do.

So, who doesn't want to see the Padlock Challenge on Impact each week?

Tenay = "Sharkboy is taking the Padlock Challenge!!"
West = "OH MY GOD!!"

important if they signed mr ass and rico to reform 'youuuu loooook soooo goooooood to me'

TMZ's show just ran a story on Chyna - she's legally changed her name to "Chyna", and claimed that he was preventing her from being able to make a living by preventing her from using that moniker. They showed a clip of Jericho saying that Vince could just hire an assassin to kill her after apparently asking who'd win in a fight. Chyna said she wanted to come back to wrestling to kick Vince's ass, then called him a "puss". That was a sad story to see.

Edit - Thursday WO site news update - http://www.wrestlingobserver.com/wo/news/headlines/default.asp?aID=21259

CBS is in talks for some UFC prime time specials, Cena wants WWE.com to air the whole interview he did, and not just the single response that aired on TV, Nick Bockwinkel will be undergoing heart bypass surgery at 2 AM tomorrow morning, Moolah is mentioned in the next issue of Sports Illustrated, ECW's rating went down to a 1.2 this week, Chris Masters is already accepting indie bookings, WWE.com has an interview with Bret about the 1997 Survivor Series, while CNN.com has a transcript of Vince's entire interview (beyond what aired) of Death Grip.

.................................................................
Shows on a major broadcast network could be a huge coup for the UFC, and I hope WWE.com does show the entire Cena interview, I hope everything goes well for Bockwinkel - he's a legend, and there have been far too many deaths already this year. ECW's rating going down is a bit sad, but it shows that the gimmicky stuff for last week's Halloween Eve show worked at attracting viewers. I haven't read the WWE.com Bret or Vince CNN.com interviews, but those should be quite interesting.

Zen, which PWG show did you watch? The commentary is notoriously bad, but I've actually never seen a PWG show on DVD to experience it myself. I know the commentary is taped afterwards and added in during editing, so that may be a part of it.

If you liked what you saw, I can probably recommend specific shows based on their matches.

I downloaded PWG - DDT4 Night 1 (May 19, 2007) to get a taste of the promotion and Bryan Danielson vs. Necro Butcher. I'm trying to check it out with an open mind and go on from there but the first thing that hit me immediately was the poor commentary quality. I'm going to go through the show and see how I like it.

If you can suggest me some shows, I'd probably buy one or two if I like this one.

Hold on, there's a RoH fan who is complaining about the poor commentary style???

Hey I never said that the RoH commentary wasn't grainy as fuck.

Because it most definitely is.

But I'm not complaining about the style of commentary. I'm saying the recording quality is poor.

About two notches below RoH and a hundred below WWE.

The show that Danielson/Necro comes from is actually really good in itself. The tag match was excellent (Generico/Steen vs. Roderick/PAC), and the big Generico/Danielson match had a HUGE feel to it. The busted-up Necro picture I posted a few threads back was from that match.

Two shows to check out - 2005's "Astonishing X-Mas" and 2006's "Enchantment Under The Sea".

"X-Mas" features Super Dragon and Kevin Steen beating the living crap out of eachother in a Guerrilla Warfare match (essentially no-DQ), Samoa Joe vs. Davey Richards, a fun Colt Cabana match, and the only appearance of Chris Kanyon in PWG.

"Enchantment" has a pair of great tag matches (Scott Lost & Chris Bosh vs. Super Dragon & Davey Richards, and El Generico & Quicksilver vs. The Briscoes), as well as Danielson/Claudio, B-Boy/Sydal, Steen/Aries, and Chris Sabin/Joey Ryan for the PWG title.

I remember you saying that you went and saw Danielson/Necro Butcher live which is the reason I went ahead and downloaded the match. I still haven't had time to watch the PWG show but I'll probably do it some time tomorrow.

Thanks for the suggestions!

9. World Tag Team Title- 2 Out Of 3 Falls - Jay & Mark Briscoe vs. Kevin Steen & El Generico

It's been a little while since I did this but I suggest that everyone download this for the Takeshi Morishima vs. Bryan Danielson ROH World Title match. It tells the best story of any match this entire year and is easily a contender for Match of The Year. There isn't as much spectacle as some would like but the ring psychology and the big man/little man story told by Danielson/Morishima is easily a hundred times better told than any of the stories told by Cena and the numerous big men he fought over the course of his championship and reminds me of the stories told by Bret Hart. The crowd interaction is amazing as well and the audience was psycho hot throughout the entire match. They genuinely believed that if anyone could dethrone the monster Morishima, it was 'The Best Wrestler In The World' and that helped the match generate all kinds of electricity and as far as I'm concerned this match could have headlined Wrestlemania.

The rest show is also great top to bottom and I suggest that everyone give it a shot.

Christian Cage vs. Kaz is going to blow the roof off, if the match they just had was any indication of what's to come.

Yes, thanks Zen. I've been wanting to check out ROH for the longest time, and from the way this match was described when it happened this sounds like a good place to start.

To everyone downloading the show, I suggest you turn up the audio a little higher than you normally would so that the live experience translates over a bit better. RoH ends up mixing the live audio a bit lower than it really is so that the commentary can be heard.

I hope you enjoy it.

Hominahominahomina.

scott hall is wearing an insane clown posse hockey jersey.... and to think i was already disinterested by his return, and now im even more disappointed.

Good to see I wasn't the only one who thought so.

"Listen up skank, just hold the mic."

Between that and his numerous references to Styles as a little child, it was great. Effective, entertaining, and didn't have to resort to any John Cena-like "you are teh ghey" humor.

Nope, he just resorted to a bunch of "I'm better at fucking than you" jokes, but they were delivered perfectly. Hell of a shoot wrestling challenge... powder... interference... who was that supposed to appeal to, exactly?

Well, I'm surprised nobody mention this. On the front page of Wikipedia today that have an article about the Montreal Screwjob that involved Bret Hart. All you have to do is visit www.wikipedia.org to see it.

One other thing for the RoH show, look out for the "Benoit" cheers during the Davey Richards vs. PAC match when Davey starts going through a small bit of Benoit's moveset. Keep in mind this was EXACTLY 1 month after Benoit murder-suicide and the crowd was going apeshit crazy over it in cheers. I guess it's a testament to Benoit as a wrestler (and not as a person). The chants are at: 57:40 and again at 58:00 during the repeated german suplexes.

Is it just me, or does Bryan Danielson have lipstick on??

Zen Davis, you are a godsend.

Well, I'm off to watch impact! From what I read, sounds like I have a crazy ass Steiner promo to look forward to.

So does someone in ROH have a serious hard-on for streaming ribbons or something? I'm pretty sure theres been at least one instance of them in every picture set I've ever seen of the shows.

Impact was actually a decent little show tonight. It had some boring points, but started off very, very strong with Kaz-Christian in a PERFECT preview match - it was a great match AND (this is key, TNA) MADE ME WANT TO SEE THEM SQUARE OFF AT THE PPV. The Angle-Sting match on free TV months and months ago didn't make me want to see the men involved have a PPV match, this did.

The Angles/Nash/Hall stuff was all over the show, BUT kept brief. The emphasis on the Hall/Nash dynamic irked me a bit, as it just made me want to watch tapes of WCW in '98 instead of TNA in 2007, which isn't a good sign, but I enjoyed seeing Hall out in the ring. Seeing him in close-ups in the back, with a double chin... not so enjoyable.

Don and Mike kept the idiocy to a bare minimum compared to the usual level, which helped. I loved that Don somehow knew the exact stips to the SHOP OF HORRORS match, despite none being announced ahead of time in any way. Mike talking over wrestlers continues to bug me, but I've given up hope on that completely stopping.

AJ and Scott Steiner's promos were absolutely fantastic. Both were full of one-liners, and AJ rocking a Gainesville Vocational singlet during the takedown challenge (with powder and a run-in) was hilarious, as was the takedown challenge itself, in both good and bad ways.

The whole thing left me wondering just who it was supposed to appeal to, as MMA fans would no doubt know it was fake, and wrestling fans can't take it seriously due to the powder, powerbomb, t-bone suplex, and other moves being considered amateur wrestling takedowns. AJ's "Gainesville Vocational" singlet, pushups, and spinaroonie made this hilarious though.

I loved the wacky logic used during the Abyss/Lethal tag match to explain why they were facing 3D tonight - they won a seemingly meaningless (and forgettable) match against "the dream team" months ago. That, and Tenay running down the history of the Roode-Joe feud in about five seconds, without showing clips of everything, bugged me. We got a five minute takedown challenge that accomplished very little, but didn't see, on this, the go-home show before a PPV, what started the Roode-Joe feud. We heard about it, but didn't see it. Wonderful. At least they showed about two seconds of the bloody fight between Roode and Joe last week.

The main event match didn't do much for me, and neither did the Hall-Nash showdown, but they were effective segmets. The 3D match was... odd. I'm disappointed that a backstage beating involving two table powerbombs was relegated to a single video package that wasn't really mentioned, and just what did THE GURU do to deserve a title shot? When was the last time he even won a match?

Then again, it isn't like Nash did anything (or the mystery partner, for that matter) to earn a shot at THE TNA Heavyweight championship of the world, so I guess that's a minor issue. It shouldn't be, but given the other plot problems in TNA, it is one, which doesn't reflect well on the importance of TNA's belts.

(on this meaningless last-minute match)DW - That signifies what the X division is all about!
Tenay - Karen Angle’s plan with Scott Hall didn’t go so well, so she’s going back to the original plan, whatever that means.
Tenay - This Sunday, it’ll be Abyss against Black Reign in the Shop of Horrors match!
(on this match stip that has never been explained)DW - Oh, we know what that means! NO DQ AND ANYTHING GOES!
(after a low blow)Tenay - OH, THE CHEAPEST OF CHEAP SHOTS LEADS TO THE 3D!
Tenay - We’ve got security BACK BY THE WORKSHOP trying to separate Black Reign and Abyss!
(30 minutes after she leaves Kurt)Kurt - You said that you’d be gone for five minutes, IT’S BEEN 10!
(Angle demands that Hall come out in 10 seconds)Crowd - BOR-ING! BOR-ING!

DW - Kurt Angle is an emotional wreck!
Tenay - WE ALL KNOW HE DOESN’T RESPOND WELL TO THREATS!

Steiner - AJ, when your girlfriend finishes tucking you into your Buzz Lightyear sheets, she goes to me to satisfaction! The Big Bad BOOTY DADDY!
PPV Preview show ad - Last month’s Ultimate X match was so insane, we thought we’d give it you for free.

Fans - WELCOME BACK!
Tenay - WOW THE FANS ARE REALLY SHOWING THEIR APPRECIATION!
Hall - I didn’t know about the dress code… and I thought we still dyed our hair.
Crowd - RA-ZOR! RA-ZOR!
DW - WHAT THE HELL’S GOING ON HERE!?

xcoax, the streamers are a tradition paying homage to Japan, where that is a customary act before a major match. It's a visually impressive (and most importantly for an indy) inexpensive way to make a match seem like a big deal. Corino had some fun with it once against Homicide by having his own lackey throw streamers for him, then clean them up, then have his own ring announcer rattle off his accomplishments, and then that ring announcer had his own ring announcer to do the same for him.
So does someone in ROH have a serious hard-on for streaming ribbons or something? I'm pretty sure theres been at least one instance of them in every picture set I've ever seen of the shows.
There's a tradition with a few wrestlers on the ROH roster that get the streaming ribbon treatment when they enter the ring for their match. Its funny to suddenly have that ribbon flying all around you live in person too.

Hey Myke, I've been wondering. Who are your favorite guys to watch?

Punk has grip on wrestling title

Phil Brooks, otherwise known as CM Punk, owns the ECW championship.

BY JEFFREY LUTZ

The Wichita Eagle

The title of Extreme Championship Wrestling champion doesn't mean as much as it used to. During much of the 1990s, ECW had a strong cult following and was known for its brutal matches in front of crazed fans in small arenas.

After the company went out of business in 2001, World Wrestling Entertainment purchased the name and video library. A few successful ECW pay-per-views prompted WWE in June 2006 to establish ECW as its third brand, joining RAW and Smackdown.

The new ECW is a watered-down version of the old hard-core organization and is watched, on the SciFi Channel, by the fewest viewers of WWE's three shows. Its champion, CM Punk, views that as his way to stand out.

"I've got a decent spot, I'm at all the pay-per-views defending my title," said Punk, whose real name is Phil Brooks. "But I do feel that ECW is a little bit of the redheaded stepchild of WWE. But that's not all negative, either. I actually embrace that."

Punk travels to Wichita on Tuesday, when WWE will tape an edition of Smackdown to air Friday night on the CW network, followed by a live ECW taping at the Kansas Coliseum.

Punk, 28, has dyed jet-black hair and several tattoos, most notably the Pepsi logo near his left shoulder. He isn't the hulking figure one thinks of when imagining a typical professional wrestler.

He has been wrestling for a decade, starting out by performing for independent promoters in tiny gymnasiums. He got the name CM when he was part of a tag team called the Chick Magnets.

WWE normally doesn't afford opportunities to independent wrestlers because the company prefers to hire and train less advanced performers to fit its mold. But Punk was too good to turn down.

"I'm hungry and more passionate than anybody I know about this business," he said. "For me to stand out, I don't think it was hard. I never take 'No' for an answer, and this is the only thing I've ever wanted to do my entire life."
Punk sports an "X" on the tape around both hands. It signifies the "Straight Edge" lifestyle he promotes, one whose followers reject drugs and alcohol.

After WWE star Chris Benoit was found to have killed his wife and son before committing suicide in June, large amounts of human growth hormone were found in his home. That led to a revision of WWE's drug policy and no fewer than 12 suspensions since.

Punk says he abstains from drugs, but understands how he can be viewed in a negative light because of the actions of his co-workers.

"You're going to get sensationalized bad publicity regardless of what it is," he said. "I think the easiest way to stay out of it is to stay clean. I don't think I get mucked in with all the other stuff; if anything else it's just the opposite.

"I'm a guy you can look at and say that the stereotype of a wrestler isn't true."

TNA's got their own save_us cryptic message viral video thing going on their site. It only took them a month+ to copy this WWE idea, and instead of WWE's method of doing it, which is to draw things out for drama, TNA starts it mere days before the message's conclusion at the PPV. Fabulous.

Got to thinking about the mystery opponent. It seems too easy that it would be Booker T. Big Show seems to be a better choice, it's been awhile since his no-compete clause expired & it could renew the "who is the true giant" feud him & Nash had back in WCW.

Both are probably choices, but Big Show seems to be the more obvious of the two.

I thought Show pretty much retired after leaving WWE. Then again, maybe he just wants to work fewer dates and not travel around as much.

Booker T does seem way too obvious.

Heh. "TNA...me too! Right guys?"

I'll get back to you on my ROH favorites, Zen.

Why does "obvious" matter? Is not Y2J too obvious also? This ain't no "white hummer/GTV" nonsense...they lead you along well enough to show you their hand, or at least what you think their hand is, and you get excited.

Most importantly, will you order Genesis?

Nope, and the viral site clearly states "Borden Huffman Genesis November 11" on it (just in reverse). Booker's the partner, unless TNA decides to bring in ANOTHER ex-WWE for a one-shot to throw people off the trail, which would serve no purpose... so maybe they'll do that.

Exactly, with everything pointing to Booker, there's a certain degree of expectation that it won't be him.

No, but then again, I haven't ordered a PPV in ages.

I still offer up that there seems to be little skepticism that ol' "SAVE_US" isn't Chris Jericho...so why would the fact that it's obvious Booker's coming into TNA make you think it isn't him?
Maybe he'll pull a REVERSE SWERVE and it'll actually be Booker.
If so, they better put more thought into it than "he's a former WCW and WWE champion," and then suggest Scott Hall, who was neither.
