The Fall 2010 Television Thread

90210 lost Brenda, Andrea, Dylan and then Brandon and Valerie although the loss of the last two was in the series twilight.

Clooney, Marguiles, Edwards, Wyle, LaSalle and a TON of others left ER during it's run and that show remained very popular.

Law and Order is probably one of the best examples. In 20 years, you're going to go through a lot of characters.

MASH is another good example. You had 2 of the 3 main leads leave after the third season, yet the show continued for 8 more seasons afterward, and most thought the quality of the show improved.

I don't watch ANY of those shows but there ya go. ER is one I should have picked up. I was trying to avoid saying "no soap operas" and you guys found examples with me having to say so.

I thought about MASH but as i've seen it but never watched it I just assumed it was the same guys.

L&O I would never have gotten. In 20 years I just assumed the same guys got older. If they wanted new characters don't they just make a spinoff? That's what it feels like with L&O,CSI,and now NCIS? at least from an outsider's perspective.

Homicide, went through some major cast changes around season 3, and it had several excellent seasons afterwards.
oh wow I clearly didn't read your full post because obviously I was talking about Frasier.

I wouldn't count Cheers because that was more of a single person exchange. Plenty of shows survive a single person alteration. Bewitched for instance. Wasn't there a show where David Spade was the new cousin or was that 8 things? I was thinking of more the inverse. like if everyone changed but maybe one person remained.
8 Simple Rules brought in James Garner and David Spade after John Ritter passed away.

How long did Spin City last after changing MJF for Charlie Sheen?

On topic, Friday Night Lights--AKA the most underrated show on TV--returns next week.

Spin City is the one I was trying to remember. 8 Rules didn't fare too well after Ritter was gone but Spin City did alright with Charlie Sheen. oh but wait.. I dunno if I would count that according to my own internal rules. blast.

how underrated is it? because that show is one of the most critically acclaimed shows I've ever read about. People RAVE about FNL. They rave so much I'm tempted to actually watch it one of these days. the last show that had such positive feedback about it that I tried was Breaking Bad and that turned out brilliant.

I think it's under rated, in the ratings category. It took DirecTv saving a season or 2 ago to keep it on the air. Do yourself a favor and find season 1 and watch it. It's a brilliant show! I'm looking forward to the premiere next Wednesday. Just have to make sure my DVR is set to record it, even if it means recording the re-airing at Midnight.

Is it airing on cable first and then later on NBC like last season? or is it on NBC?

Blue Mountain State is back. Sam Jones III is gone. and the first two episodes were played in reverse order. That's probably not good news right.

Even though it's not really traditional TV per se, I have to say I was thrilled to see the Yankees lose to the Rangers in the American League Championship Series (baseball).

Agreed :applause:

oh hey saw the WalkingDead pre-air and it's absolutely zero on the surprise meter.

the good news is because i was already expecting it to be rather fantastic, and it pretty much delivers. I think we know who's getting the oscar in make-up/FX this year. Very well done, and that really is just the background compliments. The acting and writing is pretty good as well. the ONLY issue I raise is the same issue I had with the book and it's a teeny tiny gripe.
This is a contemporary zombie story. Why at the onset of an outbreak would everyone even THINK to bundle up in Atlanta? has NOONE seen a zombie movie? Even real diseases spread faster when you smash everyone together.

If I was writing the show I probably would have started it off on his trek to Atlanta and did waking up as a flashback episode later on but hey I'm not saying it didn't work. It worked beautifully staying faithful and I'm not even an aspiring screenwriter. and again this wasn't a surprise based on the photos and trailers we've already seen.
Cheers is the only one I can think of right now where a main character left a hugely successful show and it went on to become on even more popular.
Dukes of Hazzard survived. They went back to Bo and Luke though eventually.

my generation already got canceled? wow, and abc pushed it pretty heavily too. Im liking the event a lot even if it is pretty cheesy

The Event=Lost 2.0

Just so long as they don't do like Sci-Fi used to do with Farscape and keep it as only a 'fill in' show and even forget to air a new season for a couple of years then the show might do ok.

But by the end Lost was a convoluted and confusing show to try and watch. Hopefully they don't do the same with The Event.

I also was watching both Pawn Stars and American Pickers on History as well as Mythbusters, but since it seemed like quite a few episodes of Mythbusters ended up being re-hashes of prior show topics and it had no new episodes for a while I got sick of it.

I'm 2 eps behind on the The Event but I'm digging it so far. I mean it's not like it takes much brainpower to watch but it is pretty good filler.
There will be no hope for FOX if they cancel Fringe.

http://tv.yahoo.com/falltv/photos/10-bubble-shows/632
Especically with all the promoting they did on it back over the summer of 2008 before it came out.

It wouldn't surprise me, as Fox brings some great shows to TV and kicks them to the curb without much warning (Firefly and Dark Angel, just for a couple examples).

Very true, though it seems like they didn't really give Firefly a fair shot, due to the time slot and the strange airing of episodes.

So, can anyone think of a non-cartoon Fox canceled after three seasons?

Sliders and Arrested Development

Sliders was 3 seasons or less? I could have sworn that was more. Not much, but I thought it was.

So disappointing.

Guess we'll get wrestling back in that timeslot. Yay. :bomb:

Hopefully, they actually end it correctly and not let it end without an ending.

HBO has renewed Eastbound & Down (Yay!) and Bored To Death (Yay!) for another season each. They also announced that they will be ending Big Love after the next season airs starting in January (Boo!!).

wait people actually watch Bored to Death? I'm trying but the truth is every time I watch it I wonder why I'm still paying attention. The most ironically appropriate title for a tv show ever.

I haven't watched it this season yet but I loved it last season. I think it is hit or miss with people though.

Did anyone catch The Walking Dead? I DVRed it and will hopefully watch it tonight...

i like the actors in Bored to Death. Always been a huge fan of jason s. and honestly it's not the worst show I've seen or even the worst that I've steadily watched but over all I think I might be one of the miss.

Walking Dead was fantastic as we'd hoped.
Did anyone catch The Walking Dead? I DVRed it and will hopefully watch it tonight...
I did and watched it last night. It's some of the best TV I've seen in a while. The warnings about it not being suitable for all viewers isn't a joke, it does have some strong graphic violence in there, though it's on par with previous zombie movies.

I hadn't read the graphic novels that it's based on, and in the thread for that, there's some conversation that there's a little bit of liberties with the plot.

Dexter was crazy, I loved how he handled a potential disaster.

I finally watched The Walking Dead premiere and loved it can't wait for the next one!

Boardwalk Empire continues to impress me greatly.
NBC canceled the back 9 order it placed for Undercovers. That show is done.
I guess they'll finish out what's remaining up until the winter / holiday break timeframe and then it'll be done.

One of their high profile shows, now done. Not good.

It might mean Season 5 of Chuck though... so that's good. I never watched Undercovers - it lingered on my DVR for 5 weeks until I cut it for more space.
It might mean Season 5 of Chuck though... so that's good. I never watched Undercovers - it lingered on my DVR for 5 weeks until I cut it for more space.
Think of it as Alias with a married couple. The first episode was decent, and I have the other ones on one of my DVRs, though I've had other things to keep up with. I'd be curious to see where they end it, as if they can it immediately, I'll drop it, though if they work out the 13 episodes they have done, then I'll probably watch it through over the summer.

I'm curious to see what they replace its timeslot with. Moving around money for Season 5 of Chuck would never be a bad move in my book.

i WISH undercovers was like Alias with a married couple. Alias was good. Undercovers always feels like it's on the cusp of being as good as Alias but I realize now that every episode has keep me on the cusp without actually crossing over.

Now I know how the ladies feel after StrongPimpHand gets done with them *zing*

I wish I could be sad it's canceled but.. I'm just not.
NBC canceled the back 9 order it placed for Undercovers. That show is done.
I don't think it ever picked it up for the back nine. Near the end of the original run, they asked for four more episodes (bringing it to 13). That's sort of unusual in itself as few shows nowadays get that sort of opportunity. Typically after a show has aired a few times, the network will either cancel it outright or pick it up for the entire season. I suppose it shows NBC had confidence in Undercovers and was hoping it'd be able to build an audience.

I'll be curious to see what they do with the remaining episodes. With the holidays coming up, now isn't exactly the best time to premiere a new show, but this is a sweeps month, so just letting that timeslot stagnate with a show that is going to lose even more viewers now isn't the best move in the world either.
