The General 360 Owners/Buyers FAQ Thread (Updated 1/15/10)
Never. *IF* it does you just call customer service and give them the code and after they verify that it has never been used and doesnt work they will give you a new one.
Sweet, thanks.

I did a google search but only see information about netflix, setting up streaming or tversity. What I want to know is why Xbox requires you to be connected to xbox live to stream movies like xvid etc from you personal library shared via Windows Media...I have noticed this before but with Live down today it is really annoying that I can't watch some the latest Tru Blood or any other movies/Episodes today until Live is back up even though the xvid file sits right here on my computer and I can watch it on my computer.

so you're mad you can't watch your illegally downloaded shows and movies on your xbox because LIVE is down so you post about it? not the smartest thing I've ever seen posted.

No not mad, asking a tech question about why? Many streaming devices only need to be connected to the media server only. However I wasn't asking for rude comments.....and no one said my episodes are illegal I own the dvds just don't like dealing with physical media.... You do realize Tru Blood season 1 was released on Dvd last Tuesday and it takes very little time to drop them to xvid for ease of viewing, but I suppose you do know everything since you felt the need to attack someone?

wasn't trying to attack, I've just seen people get mods on their ass for less.

Hey thanks spree4567 so much for answering, explains it all, and fully answers my Technical question pertaining to xbox live streaming home content, good thing windows 7 once final will not require this....since I am using the RC today and will have Final Version the day it is released.

Again Thanks Spree4567 for the answer.

An interesting question and an interesting answer. Also, wtf at the dude complaining about illegal tv shows. Everyone is a saint now, days, huh? Really, what difference does it make to you if a person watches a TV show on Hulu, with a significantly lower video quality, or watches nice, crisp xvid files of the same show?

I'm kinda disappointed that I can't watch Netflix while XBL is down...I assumed the code I entered was tired to my XBL account and my Netflix account. So once entered, I shouldn't have to be signed into XBL...but oh well.

have you guys tried streaming from the video library instead of media center? I dunno, but that works for me as I dont use media center extender.

Dude, I wasn't complaining, like I said, I've seen people get hounded for saying or even implying less, that's all.

Trying to stream movies to your Xbox while offline? When live is back up all you need to do is create a new gamertag silver account and then go download the " optional media update " add-on while signed in under the newly created GT. You can now streams movies offline.

Yeah so when people act like that on here, I just put them on the ignore list, this way I don't have to read them unnecessarily attacking other people.

So DRM applies to the optional media update too? o_O What the fuck!

Ummm, I was streaming from my laptop to my Xbox earlier today.

Not using Windows Media Center though, lags too much for me. I just open Media Player and under the Options tab, there is a tab for Library. Configure sharing to allow the xbox to see your media, and then go to Monitor Folders and chose where you have the files.

I ran into the same problem today. It's because the optional media update isn't avilable when not connected to live (which is BS).

I rip a lot of my own DVDs to my PC because 1) it makes it way easier to sort through and choose and 2) my 4 year old niece is not the tidiest of toddlers. So she was out of luck when she wanted to watch Bolt today because we found the case but the DVD is nowhere to be found.

i just got a 360 pro from the amazon deal and having connection issues using the ethernet cable. long story short, im planning on getting a network adapter instead of a new router (wireless works fine with laptop and ps3) and wondering if anyone has had issues, specifically lag, using one? thanks in advance.

I've been using a wireless bridge on my 360 (almost the same concept as the wifi adapter), no issues with lag. The only time I've had any trouble is with torrents going, but that's unrelated to wireless.

So apparently theres a 512mb Jasper that has been leaked? It's on Gamespot.com which links to another place. A few new insides to...

Hrm.
If I have a X Box Live Gold Subscription, will 48 hour codes stack on it?
48 hr codes are like trials. They should only let you play online with people, but you won't get the full features of gold like having a 2nd player as a "guest" play with you online. I am guessing that is why 48hrs won't stack with gold since they are sort of different (feature wise anyway)

I'm thinking of getting rid of my original Xbox and just putting all the saves onto my 360. I don't see a reason to keep the system around and if I wanted to play the games I would have to reconnect everything again. I'd rather just play them on my 360. How would I go about doing this? Also how is the quality of the 360 BC?

I'm pretty sure you can use a memory card to swap over your saves, I don't have any memory cards as I upgraded to a bigger hard drive anyways (and I used the Xport as well). I've still got my xbox because its been modded/skinned, my first soldering job, can't let it go lol.

BC on the 360 is usually ok while some games are here and there performance wise. There is a nice long list over at xbox.com though. Somebody needs to make a thread with the games and a star rating for their performance, something similar to the install sizes for the games thread.

I think it's solid when it's available at all, though I've heard of some exceptions. I don't think there's any official way to move saves over though (and even on the 360 I can't copy Xbox 1 saves off!)

Earlier this year I used a transfer kit to migrate all my 360 stuff (saves and xbla games) from a 20gb drive to a 60gb. I might have a chance to get a 120gb drive, would this kit work again or is the DRM related transfers limited to once per year?

It's not the kit itself though, right? Rather the software that comes with it? I don't really understand the point of limiting it period.

yeah, there is a disc that comes with the cable for the file transfer, I think there was a one year limit but not 100% sure. I hate to lose all my xbla games and addons i paid for
:(

Well, I'm about to join the XBox crowd. I ordered an Arcade from the Amazon trade-in deal, and bought a 120 Gb drive at BB last week. I was going to get the 60 Gb starter kit, but didn't want to have to deal with running out of room later. Anyone got any advice for a good but cheap headset? I don't have a HDTV yet so I don't have to worry about a HDMI cable.

Personally I don't think the current gen systems are usable on SDTVs....but if you have a computer monitor, you can use that. It'll work fine with most stuff.

I think the standard headset is just $20, so it's not too bad.

Yeah, I was looking at the standard headset, which is reasonable, but after reading the reviews on Amazon it seems the consensus is it's a POS that breaks a month after you use it. Is there a better option, even if it's a little more expensive? I'd rather pay a bit more and not have to worry about it breaking later. Or is the standard headset fine and all those people on Amazon are abusing it?

I am cleaning out all my non-bc original X-box games and putting them up on Goozex and ran across one I was not sure of. It is GTA 3 from the GTA Double Pack its not listed on the BC list but it seems the version from the GTA Trilogy is. My double pack is still sealed and I dont want to open it just to check to see if the game is BC unless I have to.

Here is the current list of BC games.

Thanks in advance for any replies,

Well I'd take any review from online sites with a grain of salt, usually they're good for an overall opinion but I've had my headset over a year now and its still good. As long as you take care of it you should be fine, I have a few extras from bundles and whatnot if this one fails anyway.

Yeah, I haven't used the headset much at all, but it doesn't SEEM like there's anything about it that would break easily. Honestly Xbox Live voice quality is *TERRIBLE*, but everything I've heard the regular headset is at least much better than the wireless one (and YIKES that must sound bad).

i just got xbox 360 arcade from the amazon deal as well. question. i've googled and can't seem to find a good, straight answer on the subject. Microsoft brand hard drives are expensive - 3rd party ones are much cheaper. Do 3rd party hard drives work with xbox live? will you get banned from xbox live if you use one, etc? Not looking for speculation, looking for actual answers.
It doesn't matter, you can't use them anyway...
What do you mean? A 3rd party xbox 360 hard drive can't be used for anything at all? Can you elaborate?

Will0957, did you get a Jasper Arcade or a Falcon? I got mine today and it was a Falcon. Makes me mad since Amazon's website specifically states "Newest Version". Anyway, I'm sending mine back and reordering and was curious which one you received?

I think that's what mine was--check the amperage rating beside the power connector. If it says 14.2A it's a Falcon, 12.1A it's a Jasper.

You can also look at the power connector, the top long piece is split for a Jasper-

You can't use a 3rd party hard drive on a 360, only the ones Microsoft creates specifically for the 360. It's a shame since you can grab an external terabyte hdd for less than their 120gig one. Its worth it though if you're like me and installed most of the games I play so the dvd (which sounds like a leaf blower when it starts up now) doesn't degrade so much as well as arcade/save game/video files.
