The General 360 Owners/Buyers FAQ Thread (Updated 1/15/10)

For those looking to maximum your number of contest entries.... I thought I would be smart and put down a $30 pre-order, then come back the next day to put down another $28.99 on top of it (they'll only let me pay within a $1 of the total estimated MSRP). Unfortunately, they told that they basically didn't have any way to do that. They ended up having to do a presale cancel/credit for the original $30 and then just ring it up again at $58.99, letting me pay the difference. I'm not sure how that affects the number of contest entires (i.e. - does doing a return the next day nullify your contest entry?). Anyway, just throwin' that out there.

I did a GS->BB->GS->BB flip today with a bunch of the games listed in post #2 and I have no differences to report.

Also, just an FYI for anybody hoping to buy n+ this week. I had them look it up (for PSP) and they still show a release date of 8/15 and the price as $29.99..... neither of which are correct. I'm hoping they get it in wed. or fri. and that the MSRP is correct (but it probably won't be).

That's good to know, mkernan. I'm pretty sure that as long as you spend the $25 in a single transaction, you have an entry for that day. We may have to get confirmation, but that's the way our CAG BBV rep made it seem.
I put $15 down on Force Unleashed to qualify for the Wii contest, but now I'm not really sure I want it.
I hope that was a typo and you meant $25, because that's the minimum for the contest.

Knowing how unsophisticated their system is, I'm fairly sure you'd end up with multiple entries.

As for Star Wars Force Unleashed, I finally played the demo last night and it was OK. I'm not a big action game fan, though, so I can only just tolerate the DMC type play because of the license (whereas others may look at it the other way around ;)).

That's what I was figuring.
As for Star Wars Force Unleashed, I finally played the demo last night and it was OK. I'm not a big action game fan, though, so I can only just tolerate the DMC type play because of the license (whereas others may look at it the other way around ;)).
I was unsure about it too, but pre-paid $59 on it because its Star Wars. I loved Jedi Knight, II, Academy, and after playing the demo, I'm still a little unsure about it all. It felt similar to those games, but the movement and the controls were a little iffy. I did have a big stupid grin on my face the whole time, so I think I'll probably enjoy it.
As for Star Wars Force Unleashed, I finally played the demo last night and it was OK. I'm not a big action game fan, though, so I can only just tolerate the DMC type play because of the license (whereas others may look at it the other way around ;)).
Hahah, but I've noticed negativity from a lot of places and never any real reasons why. People generally cite that the Force Powers aren't crazy enough, but frankly what were they expecting? A broken game? The Apprentice uses stronger force powers than ever shown before in either the movies or gaming media. The demo is already damn easy (although I suspect this is because they afforded you more powers to try out for the sake of the demo).

Something that had occurred to me is that Force Unleashed might not have sophisticated enough gameplay to appeal to the hardcore action gamer (high level players with combo vids of Dante Must Die) but doesn't have the Jedi Knight 2 feeling to appeal to Star Wars fans. It's sort of a happy medium. The combat is not as finely tuned as DMC or Ninja Gaiden, but rather has more set combos instead of customizable ones with cancelling. The combat, in that sense, is more akin to God of War but without the ultra-violence, brutality, and Blades of Chaos.

It's not technically a typo. I just didn't mention that the same transaction had the Power Rangers game on it for flipping to GS.

Now that I think about it, though, are they counting tax on those transactions too? Because if not, I'm a cent short.

D'oh! I don't think they count the tax... Though I just checked out the fine print and it actually doesn't say anything about that either way - just "a $25 or more purchase made during a single visit/purchase transaction (which may also include rentals)".

Also, for those who were wondering (and asking earlier) the drawings will be done around Oct 8th with winners notified around Oct 22nd. That reminds me, I ought to make sure they have my phone number correct in there!

So today I'll stop by and get Golden Compass and Beautiful Katamari - leaving me $10.02 short... Hmmm... I guess I could buy yet another Mystery Dungeon game .

This is what Warner said and I'm inclined to believe him. Sorry, dude :( :
Re: qualifying for Wii contest...

Yes you can qualify for it even if you are using store credit/gift card/value card. As long as you transaction came out to $25 BEFORE tax, you automatically qualify. As of right now, then average estimated odds are 1 in 200 at any particular store.
Haha, damn, they didn't give me that party pack thing or whatever for my Mario Kart Wii purchase, either, now that I think about it.

Oh well, at least the BBV in my area are cool about the trade-ins. I didn't bother to take the price stickers off the cases when I traded them and the manager just said "Hey, we're giving you more than you paid for it!" then rung everything up anyway.

I also think I may be the only flipper in the area, which is odd for a town with no less than five colleges within driving distance. I got stalled waiting for a manager because none of three employees knew how to do a trade-in.
Haha, damn, they didn't give me that party pack thing or whatever for my Mario Kart Wii purchase, either, now that I think about it.
You only get those if you buy a game for $49.99 or more.

You're lucky that you don't have to take your stickers off, but I'm not so sure that was a good bet. With raised suspicions at BBV, you could have just as easily (or far more likely) gotten a dick manager who starts calling around when he sees you walk in with so many trades and stickers. Remember that BBV doesn't have to give a reason for blocking a trade account... none whatsoever.

Please take the stickers off. Some managers may care enough to see what we're doing and raise some questions. I'm the laziest person I know, and I still take the 20 seconds to remove the 3 stickers.

Hmmm. The lady I asked this morning said the drawing was Sep. 8. I guess she was mistaken.

Mario Kart Wii qualifies. Just ask them if you can get it and bring your receipt. They let my friend have it when he bought Madden earlier in the day.

I put $20 dollars down on Fallout 3 a while ago and have been wanting to pay it off but everytime I bring it up the BBV employees talk me out of it. I really didn't think much of it but has anyone gradually paid off a pre-order?
Hmmm. The lady I asked this morning said the drawing was Sep. 8. I guess she was mistaken.
That's when the contest ends - they do the drawing a month later for some reason . Though I suppose that is subject to change - they may just decide to do the drawing right after it ends, so it is possible she was right, for your store anyway.

Yeah, I usually take them off when the sticker price is lower than the trade-in price. I do try to leave one where the sticker price is higher than the TIV (i.e. WSOP was still mislabeled as $24.99 at my GS) just so they don't wonder why all the price tags have been ripped off.

Probably easier to just take them all off, but like I said before, I don't think there are any other CAGers in the UMass Amherst area... correct me if I'm wrong. Half the game stores in the area have never seen most of the coupons and deals I bring in.

Anyone know off hand how much Madden 09 Collectors edition PS3 is getting at BB ?
My local one always says I have to bring it in before I get a price. Thanks

I had no reason to take them off after I saw who the manager was at the one BBV I went to trade in at lately. It turns out it was a local CAG's wife, who I knew before I ever bumped into him at the one local shop. She's been a manager at no less than 3-4 BBV stores around here in the last 5 years at least.

Hell, I even brought the game I was trading in in the bag from Kmart with the receipt still in it. Counting that game, I've traded in no less than 3-5 sealed/still shrinkwrapped games over the past 3-5 years at my local stores.

As it stands now, I'm registered to trade in games at 5-6 of my local BBV stores, though I only trade at the further ones sporadically, mainly when I'm down that way for the day or whatever.

Also, how much is Tony Hawk's Project 8 for PS3 getting these days? I ask because I spotted 2 copies at a further away Kmart and they were ringing up $5 each.

Please always remove the GS price tags. While you may be the only one in your respective area (congrats on that), BB is nationwide and it only takes one motivated SM and/or DM to alert corporate.
Don't make it easy.... and keep it low key...as another stated, lazy is fine...but it only takes a couple seconds to remove the tags...

If it means that much to you, I'll take the price stickers off. GS really needs to stop sticking irremovable stickers directly to the case.

Yeah, those are a pain. It takes me more than 20 seconds to get them off as usually just the top peels off then I have to scrape the rest off so the bar code is readable - and no matter what I do some residue is left over such that it is clear a sticker was removed. I figured the majority of BB people won't care about that, though. However, it could be worse - someone in the GS coupon thread is saying all the games they bought at one store have stickers affixed to the COVER ART itself underneath the case. Whoever did that should be fired on the spot .

Yes that happen to me this week, The Sega superstar tennis PS3 had the stickers on the actual cover art, side, and on the fucken barcode....they were a pain, and even tore the cover somewhat

From what I've heard from numerous GS employees when I was using the Wii game coupon, it's a company policy now to affix the stickers right to the cover art. Whoever came up with that policy must realize that a good portion of Gamestop's customer base don't care about completeness of the games or even if there's eleventy billion stickers per game slapped on there.

However, some stores(at least 1-2 around here do this)will put the stickers while still on the backing along the spin of the case, but the other ones they still put them on the case and not the cover art.

I guess they do this to prevent people from trying to swap out stickers or something.
Yes that happen to me this week, The Sega superstar tennis PS3 had the stickers on the actual cover art, side, and on the fucken barcode....they were a pain, and even tore the cover somewhat
It seems every GS around here labels their used games w/ stickers on the cover art. It was killing me during the Wii coupon at GS as those covers peel off very easily from those stickers (and forget about GC games - the worst). The PS3 games don't seem to be as bad. I was lucky and scored a copy of ICO w/o the sticker on the artwork. But yes, that is one policy that needs to go away STAT.:bomb:

if you happen to be driving to BB on a sunny day, place the game on the console (in the sun) for a few minutes while driving, now try pulling them off (albeit slowly) but it usually comes off complete (sticky and all) 19 times out of 20...;), flip it back in the window for the other side...done...

only one store out of 10? applied any stickers directly to the cover art...and this worked for those also...

Last week, two GS managers pushed the fill out survey on the receipt...supposedly big focus on the feedback from these...perhaps we could all fill these out and mention collectors really appreciate as little extra stickers on the games or artwork as possible...?

Had something weird happen this evening, I went to BBV to pick up the pokemon's & a couple fillers to flip to GS for some credit for Socom and maybe Force Unleashed. I picked up Manhunt 2, Golden Compass, & Spider-Man Friend or Foe (PS2's) to complete my fillers.

When I went into Gamestop and attempted to trade all of the above in. After he gets done scanning them, he scans my edge card, and says to me that we're not going to be able to take your PS2 games because you have traded them in before. I played it cool and said fine whatever, and just took the trade credit for the Pokemon's (cost me $6 since I didn't get the trade bonus. Out of curiosity I wondered around the store, thinking to myself I know I trade more than 1 copy of a few games here during the course of the B1G1 one, sure enough there were 2 Power Rangers and 2 Iridium Runners that I know I traded in (I'm pretty sure I'm the only flipper in the area.) Now I don't know what prompted my rejection, because I am always careful about not trading in duplicates at the same time, spreading my trades out,etc.... Does anyone know if it brings my trade history up when they scan the Edge card? I've never had problems trading in duplicates at different times before, and I think it might only be this store that cares. I thought about pressing it further, and asking whats the reasoning behind that rule, do you need me to show you a recipt, yada yada yada, but I decided it was probably best to just let it go. Anybody else have anything like this happen?

I have encountered a gamestop that leaves the backing on the sticker and places it in the spine. The price is visible with no sticky residue. Problem solved...why can't all the gamestops do this?

As for the ones on the front and back cover, they don't really bother me as long as they don't put it on the cover art directly.

Interesting. I once brought in two copies of Iridium Runners to my local GS and the manager told me that they aren't allowed to take two of the same game at once, but its not a problem if I just bring in the second one the next day. I don't remember anyone ever giving me problems about it, although trading in three copies of Iridium Runners in a week may push that a bit. We'll just have to see.

I'm probably done with flipping for the time being after this round, so as to give the scene time to "cool down".

Do you mind sharing the location of this GS?

Does anyone know whatever the newest Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon game trades in for? Might be good flipping potential because you can get both of them at Radioshack for 40 bucks.

It's a $20 flip, so any promo you can stack on it is the difference you get. I believe it's a 1.4 flip with the full +40%.

Not bad then. I'll have to go pick up two copies, one to keep and one to flip.

I'm guessing that's the only good flip from the Radioshack sale?

Lego Indiana Jones DS is also a 1.4 flip.

i would expect the trade in vaule for the pokemon games to crash soon

Radio shake has them for 19.99 each
Blockbuster has them at least locally for 24.99 NEW

Another day, another buncha flips. Some confirmed GS-> BB Flips that i have yet to post (GS TIV's after 40% bonus):

Gun (PSP): $14.99 (used) -> $12.80
Metal Slug Anthology (Wii): $9.99 (used) -> $9.80

I guess MS Wii dropped from 11ish, but its still almost a 1:1 flip. In my log of great karma, the manager who months ago called a bunch of stores thinking I was the person who had been stealing games from one location and selling to another, gave me a $10 discount on a new game. New Super Mario Bros (DS) was marked as $30 however it rang up as $35. He gave me $10 off, making it $25.

My wife is awesome with taking the stickers off. I remember the first time I had her do it because I was driving, after she handed it back to me, I was amazed with how clean it was. Of course I complimented her non-stop on it and now she's my designated sticker remover! :D

Ventured into a BB that I avoid due to Jr Dick on staff, but glad i went.
they had two used Prof Laytons for $19.99, and a Manhunt 2 PSP. They had a used Pokemon DS game but it was cartridge only.
Looking foward to boosting GS credit back up tomorrow.
Off topic, but traded in a Dragon Ball Z...3 and WWE 08 to Gamestop to get Civ Revolution for $19.99(part of the trade two get x for 9.99/19.99). Dragon ball gets $5, WWE gets $9, but with the bonus since i put it towards Civ REv and edge I got $41.40 trade in credit for the two games!
The Clerk who said i was his hero for having so much credit called me Superman today.
Nice ego boost and a great deal.

I can't imagine why they'd complain about you buying games.

Had a shift lead reject one of my trades due to the missing manual.
He stated that they only accept 100% complete games.
I told him that I bought plenty of games from there without the manual and if he can give me a discount due to the missing manuals from the used games. He pretty much said that used games were take it or leave it.
That was a first.

Doesn't BB have a 30 day return policy on new merchandise? Maybe they are waiting for the 30 days to pass before doing the drawing. If they didn't, you could probably buy alot of games just for the entries and do a return after the drawing. What's stopping any of the people gaining an entry through pre-orders from cancelling the pre-order after the drawing?

man, couldn't get to any GS or BBVs today. I hope the tivs hold for BBV. At my local GS they got a blacksite, wsop, and a few other ok flips. Turn that into some .08 and above flips from BBV to GS and I can get some GS profit. I've only been going down since the b1g1 + 30% combo.

I just want some fillers for my madden psp. I might even trade in MGS4, I haven't played tat in over a month since I beat it...

Oh man, you stole my thunder there. I was just gonna post that I was shocked to find a complete Professor Layton USED at a regular Blockbuster. I've said this before but 4 out of 5 Blockbusters I go to have NO used DS games whatsoever. This one actually had 2 or 3, and one was this which I jumped on. I was being stupid though because I should have put the PS2 Bee Movie game back as now I have 6 to trade. Maybe that means I'll have to get 2 other games and do another Mystery Dungeon pair . I know I can just throw the Bee Movie into a trade with the others but since I'll lose a few $ on that it seems kind of dumb to include it when it isn't needed as filler for the trade 5 part of the deal.

As for the rest of your quote, I kind of wish I had saved some DBZ (and something else) to take advantage of that GS trade-in deal. It would be a better return than the BB->GS thing using Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. But then again, you have the hassle of getting then possibly trying to return a game (though I might have kept a Civ Rev myself) plus the potential of being banned for buying and trading in their very own games (always a risky thing).

To recap:

1) Bought Power Rangers and a Mystery Dungeon pair + 1 extra last night (getting 2 Wii entries at 2 different stores)
2) Today I bought another Mystery Dungeon (so at this point I have 2 pairs), Golden Compass, Beautiful Katamari, and Iridium Runners without art work (and another Wii entry).
3) Head to a further GS than normal because they are better about worse-condition stuff. I'm now wishing I had bought the disc-only Power Rangers last night but oh well. I trade the 2 Mystery Dungeons, Golden Compass, BK, and IR for a cool $77 (BB cost = $70). I lost more than expected on BK because it dropped to $6 base, but not bad overall... I then bought Tales of the World Radiant Mythology (for myself and the main reason I wanted to go to this GS), and WSOP and HC:BftP to flip.
4) Head to the BBV 1/4 mile away and trade WSOP and HC:BftP for $49.
5) Purchase Professor Layton, Golden Compass, and Bee Movie game (and thus get an entry in the Wii contest at a third store).

So now I have one more Mystery Dungeon pair + GC, Bee Movie, Prof Layton, and the Power Rangers from last night that I held out of today's trade (because it is mint/complete and wanted to save it for the pickier GS).

So my dilemma is do I trade all 6 and call it a day, or do I go in and pick up another pair of Mystery Dungeon games and scrounge up 2 more filler games (can get Golden Compass for sure) and make 2 more GS trades?

So far from this Mystery Dungeon deal I've converted $21 in BB credit into $48 in GS credit (if I factor in the reverse flip of WSOP and HC:BftP) and gotten myself 4 Wii contest entries across 3 stores.

In other news, this other store had the brand new preorder sheet from the new MAP (dated Aug 26th) and they gave me a copy to keep. So if anyone wants part numbers for the preorder games let me know. Guitar Hero World Tour is now officially on the list and I'll update the OP with all the rest too (nothing else too interesting).

And finally... My little local store informed me that they are doing a midnight launch for Star Wars Force Unleashed and giving away one of the large Darth Vader Unleashed figures as a raffle for those who preorder and show up at midnight to get it. This store has not done a midnight launch for anything before (well, possibly Madden 09 but I was out of town that week so I'm not sure). They are really trying to push that game. My son played it tonight and he had a lot of fun throwing storm troopers around. It was actually pretty cool that they would try to hold on to things as you tossed them around - one even grabbed a beam on the ceiling and hung there after he let him go. You have to admit that's some cool touches in gameplay there...

Oh, one more anecdote. I thought it was strange my local BB had another Beautiful Katamari when I had bought their converted rental (they used to have 2 and cut it to 1) back during the B1G1 sale, or possibly even before that.

Well, when I bought the one today and was checking the disc I noticed a Gamecrazy receipt tucked behind the manual. It was someone's preorder (for the full $39.99) at the same Gamecrazy that I preordered it from (for the same price). This is the first confirmation I've ever seen that I am not the only person to trade games at my local BBV - it's good to know there's someone else though the shelves are clearly stocked with much of what I've traded over the years (though B1G1 cleared much of that out finally) ;). Clearly not someone too savvy though as I can't imagine they got more than $6 or so for it (and could have gotten more for it at GS obviously).

Hey IO, I believe he's referring to the Radio Shack sale+10 dollar off 40 dollar purchase coupon. That would net him two Pokemon games for 15+tax each.
You flippers better leave me some Pokemon because my girlfriend and I each want a Pokemon game. :shame:

Wait, he's using cash to build up BBV or GS credit? Amateur! ;).

I don't know about Radio Shack, but just about every Blockbuster store in the country should have 2 of each Mystery Dungeon game. I haven't even bought all the ones from my local store yet ;). I'll probably end up getting 3 pairs + 1 to keep. Considering that there are 6-8 BB's within 20 miles of me that means there are 12-16 copies of that game. No one else seems to be buying them that's for sure.
