The General eBay Rant Thread

This may be silly but do most people expect a tracking number for the item they buy? Sometimes I forget to do it for pretty cheap items I've sold, but will add it if someone asks.

Had some leave me positive feedback for an item I sold, but mentioned in the feedback no tracking number, item as described..... i'm surprised they didn't ask for the number

Most people expect a tracking number. Most of the bigger retailers use them and all eBay labels automatically come up with them.

Seriously, if you sell a lot on eBay, get a scale (got a great one on eBay for under $20) and use eBay's labels. Can print from home, automatic labels, save on postage, and you can drop it in any post office box.

This. Printing online includes free tracking, and it almost always cost a bit less than buying postage at the Post Office.

Always, always use tracking. If a buyer opens an INR case and you don't have tracking, you'll be out the money and the item.

I get tracking for everything, but usually won't give the buyer the number unless they ask for it.
Why be lazy? You have 0% percent chance of ever earning a TRS discount (the thresholds are actually lower now) if you don't upload your tracking.

Like was mentioned above, if you sell more then a handful of items a month I have no idea how you're not printing throw eBay. You save on postage, tracking is automatically update, and it's much easier to respond to an INR dispute if that information is already there---not to mention it's much easier to win an unauthorized use dispute when you have to prove "proof of shipment" since you purchased the label through eBay.

Edit: And honestly the large percentage of sellers on eBay do this now so if you're not doing it.... your buyers are going to assume the item hasn't been shipped. They may very well think it hasn't been shipped until they actually receive it since buyers are trained to think the item has been shipped when they receive the notification from eBay with the tracking number

The only gray area for me on providing tracking information is if you are selling anything that can fit in a standard envelope and is 2 oz or less.  Then you can use a standard stamp and ship things really cheap, though no free tracking.

Then again, I've seen sellers generate a phony tracking number and post it to the sale for items that fit this description (like cell / watch batteries, for example).  When I get the item all it has is a stamp and my address on the envelope, no way they paid tracking anyways for something I bought for a buck shipped.  Not sure on eBay's policy of fake tracking numbers (too lazy to google it).

Other than that scenario, I'll echo and say just get the tracking free through eBay labels (with automatic uploading), really is a no-brainer for both parties.

So I decided to sell a game code since it's not something I want to play and it will help me recoup some of my expenses on what I got with it. Normally I don't like to sell codes, at least on eBay, since you can run into a lot of issues but decided to risk it anyway. I get a message from a guy who would buy it if I was around to send him the code immediately. I say I am ready, so after trying to get me to lower my offer by a bit, he gives in and buys it. Now I thought I had set my settings that would make it so people under a certain feedback couldn't buy but I guess I didn't check that option this time or something as after I see my dashboard I see the guy is someone with 2 feedback. So right then I start regretting things.

Anyway, he tells me he'll pay when he gets home from school or whatever which is fine so I tell him that. Just now I get a message from him saying he can't get Paypal to work. I ask him what's wrong and he replies "This" with a picture:

http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTEzNlg2NDA=/z/DyUAAOSwzOxUWmPg/$_4.JPG

I just now told him to try it on a computer since that picture obviously shows it was attempted on a cell. I'll see what he says but I'm about to check the damn codes to see if he's used them yet as I'm already suspicious. What do you think so far, trying to pull something or is maybe telling the truth thus far? And what are my options in case this guy jips me? I recall eBay never used to be friendly with sellers and codes so I'm guessing if he screws me over there's really nothing I can do.

EDIT: CA didn't link that last part so you'll have to copy it in for some reason.

Wait, he tried to haggle you down and you stood your ground, but then you sent him the code before he even paid?  Sorry, but I'm sure your code is long gone.  I don't care if the guy had 10000 feedback - no money, no code.

It was my fault on that part, I thought I had things set so it was instant payment only. I'm an idiot for not checking that, yeah.

Anyone see the new terms and conditions on paypal starting this month?  Buyers now have 180 days for Item Not received and Item not as described claims.  Beware selling hot holiday items for above retail because soccer mom can buy it for her kids on ebay for xmas and than after the supply refills buy it at retail and return your item. So now we are basically a six month free rental service for people. Oh and they will not refund your fees either.  Assinine

https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/ua/upcoming-policies-full?country.x=US&locale.x=en_US

Yep. Someone posted it about a month ago. I really don't understand this move.

Edit: I understand for pre-orders that are months out, but not for items that's already on hand.

They don't care about sellers. There really isn't much more t it. 180 days is unheard of. Who has a half a year return policy?

There's going to be nothing like selling an item and then when you totally forget about it, 5 months later "Item not as described." Hell, they could break the game themselves over that time and claim it came like that, but they just waited that length of time because they were busy or something stupid.

Although at least ebay's policy hasn't changed, just Paypal. Most people open cases with ebay, and most scammers do it with Paypal, so if they are scammers, they were going to try to find a way anyway. If there is any type of silver lining.

I'll say right now that if this ever happens to me, I'm just going to drop Paypal, let the outstanding balance sit in the negative, and choose another payment service for ebay.

Paypal will report you to collection agency, and it isn't worth a few hundred dollars for that.

To me it is.

I already have collection agencies up my ass anyway. For ridiculous medical bills insurance companies tried to screw me over on that I never paid and never will pay.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask but does anyone buy DVD/Game sized bubble mailers in bulk online? What's the best place to buy them?

Usually, I tell my Dad to pick me up a case of bubble mailers from Uline when he goes to pick up an order for his business but I completely forgot this time around.

I used to order the poly mailers from Valuemailers on Amazon, which were pretty good. But with my AZ sales slowing down, over the past year or so, I just don't have the room for a big ass box lying around.  In order to get any real savings, you have to order them in 250-500qty cases.

I just get them from Sam's Club now.  The #0 are $5 for 25 of them.  They're the paper style, so some DVD cases can be snug fit, and it may cost a few cents more per mailer.  But I'd rather not be swimming in mailers.

For these "if it fits, it ships" boxes you can get it at the post office for free, are their shipping costs listed on the USPS site since I am assuming they are set costs? I can't check their site since I don't have computer access for the next few days and that site just won't display properly on my cell. I don't need anyone to post the costs but just to confirm that's how they work and/if the costs are listed on the site.

Yes, and you get a discount if you print the label through Paypal. They have a max weight of 70 lbs for domestic shipments. And they have free insurance up to $50, I think.

The prices, according to their spreadsheet:

Flat Rate Envelopes 5.75
Legal Flat Rate Envelope 5.9
Padded Flat Rate Envelope 6.1
Small Flat Rate Box 5.95
Medium Flat Rate Boxes 12.65
Large Flat Rate Boxes 17.9
APO/FPO/DPO Large Flat Rate Box 15.9

Thanks for going the extra mile with the numbers. Hmm I'm looking to ship something that would usually probably go for about 20ish so if those are nice sized large boxes plus with a discount you mentioned probably would be a good deal.

I use Sunuku mailers from eBay. Their username is sunuku-mailers.

The post office has the sizes of the boxes on their website. Check that or pick up a few from a post office to make sure the item fits.

Can someone please tell me what is up with the tracking numbers on eBay? I have 2 expensive items coming and the tracking numbers both show that they have been delivered to places where I don't live. Also this would be impossible as these tracking numbers were generated like this as soon as the seller shipped my package and we all know a package does not get delivered in one day or less.

I know USPS re-uses tracking numbers but I would like to know what is happening here.

I just had someone message me, "Hello, I just want to make sure that you did indeed still have the godzilla ps2 game that I ordered and paid for." The person has never bought anything from me(they have 1 feedback too). This happens to me every couple of weeks.

I have two people that bought items from me both with 0 feedback and they haven't paid or responded to any of my messages. Can I just cancel the orders as they are low value items and it seems like it will be nothing but trouble even if I do get them to pay.

Hi. Question about ebay. I was thinking of getting ps3 final fantasy console. Never purchase international. Is there any fees on both ebay and paypal. What is the process? Does customs open package? It's from japan

Found a pair of hard to find sneaks on ebay for a good price. Not a too good to be true steal, but I'd say about $50-$70 below market value. It wasn't a BIN listing, he just started it at that price. So I placed a bid and won the listing. 10 minutes later, he refunded me and said "Not selling it for this price"

I checked his feedback and he had a couple negatives with people saying he did the same thing with other items. I don't really care, because it's not like he wasted much of my time, but I should neg him just for being a douche.

Yes, that is deserving of a neg. if he wants a higher price he needs to either set a reserve or start the auction higher.

As a buyer, no, there are no fees. US customs occasionally opens int'l packages, but based on my experience (roughly 30-40 packages from Asia per year), it's VERY uncommon, especially from Japan.

If you put the tracking number in the search box on USPS.com it should show the correct tracking information . I had a buyer message me with the same problem, it shows as delivered to the city I shipped the game from on EBay when looking at the tracking but shows accurate tracking on the postal service website.

You don't need to refund a buyer directly through PayPal before submitting a cancellation request anymore.

EBay now has it that when you submit a cancellation request, it will process a refund for you at the same time.

If I get a bunch of people wanting to return an item(that they say is defective) after months, I might just quit ebay. I'd rather not do that because I do 300+ sales a month there and I'm not that fond of selling on Craigslist.

It's annoying you no longer have the option of accepting money orders. I used to accept both money orders, checks (I know it was risky but I never had a problem) and Paypal before they changed the requirements where for video games, it was no longer allowed. I still get messages once in a while asking if I will take a money order.

One time last year I had a buyer actually message me about the Paypal requirement.  He didn't have a Paypal account and requested to send me a money order.  I was fine with it so long as he understood that since eBay didn't allow for it that it would have to be an offline transaction (no eBay transaction).  He was fine with it.  The surprising thing was that it was a DLC item so once I received the check through snail mail, I emailed him the code and that was that.
