I've seen God of Cookery and Shaolin Soccer once and Kung-Fu Hustle 3 times. Are there any others that I should know about or check out?
I know that the Fight Back to School movies are considered classics. I haven't seen them, but I want to. Unfortunately, I can't rent or buy them anywhere nearby, so I have to do a lot of blind buying with Asian movies. However, blind buying works out great sometimes, since I blind bought Shaolin Soccer when it first came out in 2001, and I've been hooked on Chow ever since.
Let's see, which Stephen Chow movies do I have? It's probably an incomplete list, but this is what I can remember:
From Beijing with Love (funny 007 spoof; lots of slapstick and fun to watch)
The King of Comedy (comedy/drama ; sometimes disliked by Chow's fans. I personally enjoyed it, but don't go into this expecting gut-busting laughs)
Shaolin Soccer (you know about this one)
The God of Cookery (you know about this one)
All for the Winner (haven't finished this movie yet; a friend gave me this as a gift, but it turns out that it is a bootleg and is incomplete at the end from what I've read... anyway, Chow plays a guy with supernatural card-playing abilities whose uncle tries to use him to become rich... so far, it's good)
Who else does everyone like from Hong Kong? When it comes to martial arts, I enjoy Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and Donnie Yen. I haven't seen much of Donnie's work, but I have liked what I've seen him in (The Kung Fu Master, Fist of Fury, Once Upon a Time in China 2, Iron Monkey, In the Line of Fire 4...).
As for other actors, I like Andy Lau. I've rented/seen a handful of his movies, and I've liked them all. What I can remember... Infernal Affairs, Love on a Diet, Needing You, Running on Karma, Fulltime Killer...
This topic is also reminding me of some other DVDs I bought cheap and haven't seen... Eastern Condors... Magnificent Butcher... and possibly a few other Fox Martial Arts releases.
Looks like I'm having an Asian film festival this weekend...
EDIT:
Castle in the Sky
Pretty good Miyazaki film. Not as good as Spirited Away or Mononoke, but still good.
I still need to see a Miyazaki film. I rented Spirited Away a while back, but the disc turned out to be so scratched that the movie was unplayable. So I forgot about it...
Also, where does everyone shop for their Asian movies? It's becoming harder to order from U.S. based shops because of copyright reasons, and I've never ordered from another country before...
