The Good, the Bad and the Last Movie You Saw

Last movie I saw:

Major League (classic baseball comedy)

I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this, but I thought this would be the best place, since it's a thread about movies and such... and it would be better to post in an existing thread than open a new one...

Apparently, Sylvester Stallone was on ESPN this past week and said that shooting for Rocky VI would begin before the end of the year. Also, after scouring the web, I found out that he published parts of his script in his magazine, "Sly." Here's a few scans I found:

Also, Christopher Guest and company are starting work on their latest "mockumentary" called "For Your Consideration." It's about Hollywood, and you can read more here:

Hey, feel free to post whatever, Jack. This is such a niche thread that I doubt anybody would even notice what went on in here. It's like International Waters. Woo, who wants to go marry their attractive cousins?

La Commare Secca for me. Hm, an old Italian flick...wonder if Brak's seen it?

Cool. Thanks. :)

Modium, you've seen a lot of films, and not just classics. Do you keep a journal or list of what you've seen?

EDIT: Just noticed your blog. Sorry. :)

No, actually. I was going to order that during the DeepDiscountDVD sale, but I had to cut my final purchasing decision down a few dollars, and it didn't make the cut.

How was it? I heard it was a good debut, but not as good as his other work -- then again, I wouldn't be surprised if it surpasses other films, though. ;)

Bernardo Bertolucci is a good director. I need to catch his "The Last Emperor" again, as I only got to see a nugget of it.

I've always wanted to see "1900", directed by Bertolucci, and starring de Niro. It's not available on DVD, though, for some magical reason. That's one of the titles I should suggest to Criterion, come to think of it...

Looking around online and on eBay, I spotted some Hong Kong non-bootleg, licensed releases of the 5 hours original (director's) cut. Might have to acquire. ;o

I was at the library today and what caught my eye, but 1900! Two VHS tapes, and the movie's in widescreen. I couldn't find a running time nor language information, so I don't know if it was dubbed or not. I'll check it out one of these days. Hey, check your own library, you never know what you might find there. And free!

And about La Commare Secca, it was my first Bertolucci  I thought it was pretty good, but not great. The plot moved pretty slow, to me. You've seen my taste, so you know I'm one of the most patient viewers out there, heh. I don't know, it was more interesting than good, but definitely worth it if you're a fan of his.

Stalker (1979)

Wow. One of the most incredible films I've ever seen. Someone needs to bring this to DVD, right fucking now.

Just finished "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels." And, if you watch that, you just gotta watch "Snatch" too. But, for whatever reason, it's gone. Out of the blue. No damn clue where it is.

So, I'm watching "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" instead.

Yeah, that's a logical replacement.

Watched Hellboy a second time last night. The first time I thought it was decent. The second time I wanted to punch it in the face.

I thought it was good..

Inu-Yasha - The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass - Movie 2

It seemed like a dragged out extended episode. I didn't like it as much as the first movie. But it was okay though, could have been better

Ok, been gone visiting relatives the last few days, but I did get a couple of movies watched while I was gone:

Ghostbusters

Great, crazy, fun comedy. Highly enjoyable.

O Brother Where Art Thou

Definitely filled with the Coen Brothers particular sense of humor (perhaps a tad much at times), I thought it was great. A damn fun romp through the Depression-era south, with an excellent soundtrack, and a bunch of wonderful little touches (such as the homages to Robert Johnson and of course the movie Sullivan's Travels, which O Brother gets its title from). Another high quality Coen Brothers film.

Oldboy

Pretty damn good, but I don't know how well it'd hold up to repeat viewings. I can actually say the ending was one of the least-predictable I've ever seen.

The Bicycle Thief

Man, fantastic film. The characters were wonderful, the story was simple yet worked perfectly, and the view of post-WWII Italy is very interesting. Definitely makes me want to check out some more neorealist films.

Watched the anime Dead Leaves, very strange, like a hybrid of that anime that used to play on HBO late at night during the early 90's, comic book panels, and a surrealistic painting. Definitely not for the faint of heart or the easily offended, it would also not be a good idea to watch it if you are prone to epileptic seizures as the animation style is pretty kintetic.

Me and my wife watched Oldboy and A lot like love. My feelings on Oldboy is that it lives up to the hype.(and I had high hopes on it) I think it was one the best movies I've ever seen.

The only downfall is, I also wonder how well it will hold up opon repeat viewings.. I rented it from blockbuster, it pretty safe to say I'm keeping it...

A lot like love is your standard chic flick..

Gigantic (A Tale of Two Johns) - 4/5

A documentary about They Might be Giants. A solid documentary about a band that I have a ton of respect for. The ironic thing about it is that TMBG became "known" from the result of an article in People magazine?!?!
Box of Moonlight or something like that
it had JOhn Turtorro in it if that helps.
Great movie. My favorite part is Turturro walking around his hotel room, brushing his teeth and having a pretend argument with the waitress who hits on him earlier in the film. And Rockwell is hysterical as always.

That's what I expected from La Commare Secca, actually. It has pretty mundane reviews, from what I've seen.

And I'd love to check my library for VHS cassettes... but I don't think they have any. Only childrens' tapes and the like. They used to have classic film and current movies, but not anymore. None of the 4 or 5 libraries in my town do. I may check my community college campus library.

Check to see if your library system has a website you can search. That would make things a lot easier, plus you never know what you'd find tucked away in the smaller branches.

The Flowers of St. Francis, excellent film. Very interesting to see the way of life for a Franciscan monk, the way that they spread peace not with words and sermons, but actions.

A Beautiful Mind

A good, solid film, but it's just too safe to be anything more than that. It reminds me of the Aviator really, it does have moments where it goes beyond your basic biopic material and creates a great cinematic experience, but just spends too much time showing us a safe, more or less by-the-numbers biopic. Still, it is good though, and I was very impressed by Russell Crowe's performance.
Layer Cake, for the third time, its a pretty good movie, go out and rent it or buy it when its released on the 23rd.

"You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. You climb a little higher, you take less shit. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake son."
Watched Layer Cake last night... Its pretty good. I recognize the main star from Enduring Love... Which was a different movie for sure.

Looking forward to Oldboy now as it should arrive today.

Audition

The movie was very slow. The last scene was with the girl and the wire was painful to watch. I wouldn't recommend this. I enjoyed Ichi the Killer more than this movie.

Mean Girls.

That movie is much better than it has any right to be, and Lacey Chabert is still a very attractive actress. With her and Tina Fey, how can you lose? :)
