The "Is This Game Rare?" Thread

it was.. i remember it being a favorite on the trade forums at one point. same goes for the psp version, it was hard to find at one point then all of a sudden everyone had it again. now it disappeared again and nobody cares.
I can't find the link right now - but recently it came up again because some big tournament site listed their Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 as being on the PS3 and people went apeshit and start emailing the site and they said they couldn't comment on it or something. I didn't really follow it to much since I'm not a fighting game super fan but my buddy was all excited.
A little bit after I posted what I did, this showed up at 360 Achievements...
at some point i disagree...

ikaruga for the gamecube. its interesting that a shooter that good would fall down in price.

if you look at that link from VGPC, the announcement was made pretty much around february and soon people have caught on i guess and the price went from around $63 down to $40 and have continued to go down ever since.

my theory is that maybe because of the xbox live arcade version's superiority being that its HD over the original

another HD remake was Rez. it was announced that on sept 07 that it will come out for the marketplace. its gone down hill but was able to pick itself up a couple of times and now its down to around $22 average which is an all time low.

one more.. Puzzle Fighter HD.. the PF for ps1 was at steady $40 before the announcement april 07 and saw a small spike around that time as well. but fell down ever since..

thanks to JJ's site we dont have to hire the experts :)
Im pretty sure Rez was remade by GQD, wasn't it? Same goes for Puzzle fighter. I remember a ton of Puzzle Fighters showing up at Gamestop towards the end of the time they had PS1 games.

Puzzle Fighter for the PS1 was definitely reprinted. I saw it not only at Gamestops, but at smaller independent shops at the same time it was available at GS again.

Is there any word on a price point for the xbla version?
I would guess 1200 points? I think I'll sell my PS2 copy, keep $20 aside for the points and save the rest for my vacation fund. Maybe I'll find it on the cheap some day. Thrill of the hunt.

Judging by SFIITHDR, $15 (1200 points) is a fair estimation.

I can only speak for Puzzle Fighter and Ikaruga, but the XBLA releases pretty much makes the originals unwanted. Ikaruga got leader boards and a replay feature, and Puzzle Fighter was rebalanced and included online play.

Then again, it's probably the price of entry more than anything that's making most digital releases for rare games fall in price. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is worth a lot less now as well, and that's on two consoles now not to mention unlockable on Dracula X Chronicles.
So should anyone that has MvC2 on PS2 sell it now and re-buy after the price declines?
The situation is not exactly that cut and dry. I typed up a whole example, but I couldn't make it simplistic enough to even type in this forum.

I decided on this simple example and explanation without many details:

As of now, Castlevania: SOTN is available in three (or more???) formats: PS1, XBLA (digital) and PSP. Collectors are still willing to pay a heavy premium to get SOTN for PS1, black label and still brand new and sealed in the original wrap.

Obviously, that scenario does not always happen.

One big factor to consider is the title's format. The PS2 version of MvC2 may actually be scarce. Thus, regardless of its reproduction in other formats, collectors with resources will still seek out the title.

By looking at Psychic Detective for PS1 and 3DO, we can find a simple and suitable example. The game is a pile of shit, and the 3DO version is superior. Because the PS1 version is more difficult to acquire (at least according to DP and various other sources), a used PS1 copy is about three to four times more expensive than its 3DO counterpart. On eBay, I've seen sealed ones sell from $50 to $100. Unlike MvC2, that game is not even popular.

There are so many factors. I feel foolish to leave any out. Unfortunately, we would need to create a good model to take into account most of them.

In the case of MvC2, here is another factor: a new copy will not as easily fall in value, compared to, a used copy. So, a used MvC2 could possibly end up losing value, but the new ones could fall by a smaller amount, stay stable or continue rising up in value.

Obviously, if a title is available by digital download, then we would have to consider that in our assessment. IMO, the Castlevania: SOTN example is a much closer representation of the possible upcoming situation.

Is a used, complete .hack//collection boxset(japanese ntsc import) w/ infection, mutation, outbreak, quarantine and bonus gift dvd rare? I picked up the last one on estarland.com. I have looked it up on google and the only site that had it was play-asia for $120 used.

I saw that set at Softmap today for approximately $24. I can't imagine it's too rare at that price. Also, I believe that it would be a terribly tough game to play through in Japanese.

How about a sealed Disgaea 1 (PS2) with the white seal sticker on top? If I remember correctly, after 2 print runs they stopped printing it with the sticker on the top.

$55 to $90.

It's a little more difficult to find, but it's not burning up the marketplace or anything.
Is a sealed copy of the original Phoenix Wright considered rare?
yeah. hold onto it. they dont go for much these days but all the the game stores have them at jacked up prices around me. its not gamestop new isnt it? :bouncy:

I recently found a sealed copy of Conker's Bad Fur day I'll be picking up tomorrow, it's $10!!

I'm a little weary about buying it.. since I don't know the seller.. is there any possible way of figuring out if it's what I'm buying rather then just a resealed box?

For $10 it doesn't really matter unless you are planning on selling it new. I say get it and worry about whether it's a reseal later, it's worth $10+ cartridge only.

haha Nope. It was Best Buy new. :)

My main thing was just keeping it sealed in my collection, selling I guess is another option if it's ever needed.

I'd just think as some cruel joke someday years later I'll take it out and it turns out to be Superman 64.
Is a sealed copy of the original Phoenix Wright considered rare?
I found a Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice for All and Apollo justice: Ace Attorney these past few weeks on the cheap, sealed. I almost never see Apollo Justice for sale anywhere. I'd imagine that one might be rare, what do you guys think? I'm going to hold on for them for now. I have a copy of each opened already, but since I came across them and know how much the first one has gone up in price, I figured having some sealed ones around for sale later might be a good idea.

Everyone remembers the Mana Khemia bundle right?
I haven't been able to find the Jessica figure on ebay or amazon.
Anyone know the worth of the figure or a combo sealed game with unopened figure.
I'm poor and thinking of selling.

Last I remember, unopened bundles (unopened game and unopened figure together) were going for $90+.

yeah they go for that much.. not worth it to sell imo. put it back in the shelf and let the dust enjoy it for another year maybe it'll go for more..

phear3d - Very good examples about the price declines on those games. Here is another one for the list. Marvel vs Capcom 2 for Dreamcast, PS2, and Xbox

All 3 of them are at or near their lowest prices in 2 years. I just wrote an article about this.
http://blog.videogamepricecharts.com/2009/04/marvel-vs-capcom-2-on-xbl-psn-lowers.html

I hoping to finish my research into the Virtual Console and resale prices so we can get some statistical proof of how the prices change instead of just anecdotal stuff.

Any thoughts on what it could be worth? This is for the PC, not the PS1.
Hey guys do you think my new copy of SCIV is RARE. I'm thinking I could get like $90 for it, thoughts?
If you are going to make a stupid post, you should at least try to make it funny.

Anyone know if mega man soccer for snes is worth anything cart only?
I see on ebay they are selling for around 200 bucks but for sealed copies or mint in box.
I don't know why they are selling for that much, or are just sealed snes games generally worth a lot.
Cart only is worth $20.97 according to VGPC
thanks for quoting vgpc. great site for me to use.

anyone know where I can buy boxes/manual for snes games lol

I have a complete set of the dot hack games for PS2 all sealed (the first set not the GU series) and all the respective guides for the 4 games.

I have tried searching on ebay for this but only have found open sets. Think it is better to hold on to them? I have been contemplating selling them so I can purchase a copy of Persona for the PS1 because that game has forever eluded me and I want a PS1 copy of it even if they are remaking it for PSP.

I'd imagine you could get quite a bit. I sold my complete copy of .Hack Vol 1 for $15 shipped so I can't really help you get a good estimate for a sealed copy plus guide, but given how this usually works I wouldn't be surprised if you could get $200+ for the lot.

Now for my question: Steel Batallion. Is it increasing in rarity/value, or is the current going rate inflated due to the time of year(from my experience there seems to be certain months that are better for buying, and some that are better for selling)? Here's the story... I scored a copy of both games(both factory sealed), the strategy guide, and the controller(also new, the only thing missing was the box) for $90 shipped on march of last year. I got to play it for about a half hour, and since I didn't really have any room in my place to store it I ended up selling it not much later for like $130 shipped. Now that I have a place to keep it, I wanna pick another copy up again but it's going for like $150+ on ebay! Should I try waiting or do you think that it's only going to get higher from here on out?

I figured some of you all might be able to help me with a little conundrum I have.

So, I purchased two copies of the Tales of Vesperia Premium Edition, one to keep sealed and one to play. In the manuals, there are unique codes to get some bonus from Namco Bandai at a later date.

Well, that date was sometime in April 2009, apparently. http://talesrpg.com/special/

So my question is, would it be better (value-wise) to keep my one copy sealed or would it be better to get an extra bonus soundtrack disc?

I would keep the Premium Edition Sealed personally. I currently have a regular and a Premium (the Premium is still sealed) but really want that soundtrack so I think I may try an purchase another Premium to open up (I know a place that still has one) :)

buy the steel battalion now. it will increase over the years so you dont want to wait too long. besides theres not a whole lot of people who has the actual box for it anymore, so that will be tough to find. but if you do find one with it, i would suggest even paying as much as $30-$50 extra just to get the box.

i bought a sealed one 6 weeks ago for $100 :)

The last game you could get a bonus soundtrack for registrating the game is Thousand Arms. I can tell you right now a sealed Thousand Arms is worth more than a opened TA with soundtrack.

Really? I bought a sealed copy of TA for $40 last year. What does it normally go for?

I'd say a sealed thousand arms is worth in the neighborhood of $200
