At this point I was getting pretty pissed and said screw it and went against my own rules. I went to the yardsale I saw that was like 45/50 minutes away that advertised anime, video games, etc.

Got down there 5 min before 10am (official start time). I was sure it was going to be junk or everything had been picked through before I got there but I was the first person. When one or two cars pulled up I offered a little more than I probably should've because I was guessing it would be the game people out in force (turned out just a few super old people).

Ended up getting for about $100

Ended up spending more that I normally would but was happy to final get some stuff this year.

I was there for probably a total of 45 minutes and probably 2 other cars stopped by and they were just old people looking and had no interest in the games, toys, etc. I'm thinking maybe next year or for the rest of the year I should head down to that area if there isn't much competition.

Around here it seems all the competition has moved from the city out the surrounding areas, but this was kind of farther out and a little bit more of a "white trash" area. Not ghetto, but just not like the suburbs or the hipster city areas.

 
Hooooo boy, am I jelly of that Sculptor's Cut. I played it a ton as a kid and prefer it to 63 1/3, but I'm never gonna own it unless I get suuuuuuper lucky.

Last Friday I picked up the games below for $20 from a guy cleaning out his uncle's house. He had a bit more there but it was stuff I didn't need, but he says he has more so fingers crossed that I can go back and pick up some more on the cheap.



Unfortunately I had a super frustrating Saturday morning. I struck out at a few sales but got a text from a guy running an estate sale saying he had a couple of totes full of old video game stuff. It was about 30-40 minutes out of my way, but I figure it's worth the the trip. When I get there he can only find the one tote, which is mostly full of off-brand PS2 controllers with a few random sports games. The seller then mentions he took some stuff to a game store nearby and they bought a bunch of stuff off of him. I suppress a groan. I grabbed a few titles to use for repros and hit a few more sales in the area, all of which told me that a ton of dudes already came through asking about video games.

On the upshot, I scored a super rare prototype cart at a 2nd and Charles on Monday, so I can't consider the entire Labor Day weekend a wash.

 
My claim of garage sale season being over was proven wrong.
Stopped at a couple on the way home from school and found 2 McFarlane Halo helmets (EOD and Hayabusa) my wife bundled in with a wall hanging. Had no idea what they were but they're really well done and fit on the 12" figures.
Then at another one I grabbed a complete copy of halo ce platinum hits and a complwte copy of DragonBall Z budokai tenkaichi for ps2. When I checked the case the halo case also had a random madden game and ninja gaiden black.
And most exciting for me was a copy of DragonBall budokai tenkaichi 3 behind the copy of budokai tenkaichi
Kind of sad the games I actually wanted don't have cases, but 4 good games for $2 is pretty nice.
Now I need a ps2 or backwards compatible ps3
 
Found 4 association sales, with to a total of over 30 sales. Only bought a turntable :( Hardly anything interested me, lots of junk, overpriced junk too. I may go again tomorrow since the weather is supposed to be better. Maybe more people will open.

Wish there was another association sale soon in one of wealthier neighborhoods, that seems to be the only time I find a lot of good deals these days. I think most of those happened in the spring.

Only two sales on craigslist in town for tomorrow. One in the surrounding town and then a few dotted across other ones. Bleh. Also no good looking far away ones to even try to peruse. Don't know if I want to even bother getting up.

 
I haven't went out for the past couple months it feels like. I always hit the first round of community sales and once those are done it seemed this year it dried up quick. Hopefully the community sales start hitting again since it's cooling off. Hope everyone is out there finding great deals!  :beer:

 
Didn't get a whole lot today, but my big winner was at the first sale we stopped at.  On a table marked free there was a bunch of interesting things, but what caught my eye was a gen1 Surface RT 32GB with case and type cover.  The lady said the internal charging port was shot and would need fixed, so she was just giving it away.

I just got home, shined up the connectors and plugged it in and voilà, it powered right up.  Doing a factory reset now and I will have a dedicated Smartglass tablet.

I also picked up Sonic Unleashed, Warioworld 4 and Super Mario Land 2 for .50 each.

Found Gears of War 2 & 3 nice and minty for $2 each. Also picked up some California Raisin figurines for $0.50 each.

These were both definitely more than I usually pay, but picking have been very slim these days so I've been taking what I can get I guess.

Everything was complete and minty from both.

Left my number with both of the houses and one other house. The one with the Dino Crisis and Timestalkers said they have a lot more in the house. These were just what her husband through in the plastic tub to bring outside.

I'd be happy with a few more weeks like this one and last week to end out the horrible drought I had during the rest of the summer.

 
Had the second largest festival of the year that usually attracts tons of yard sales and it was of course thunderstorms at 8am again.  Luckily I am on vacation and was able to go out late of Friday.  Had a few finds.  This has been a bad year for sales in general but I haven't been too eager either; I am trying to reduce my collection by at least 50% which is no easy task considering how large it is.

I've started looking for more good venues to set up at whenever I go out, especially indoor flea markets. Sales are generally slow but it helps when you are dealing with 1k worth of goods or more.

 
Had some pretty good luck this weekend hitting up community sales within the city, I picked up everything below for $58. The best find of the lot for me personally is that StarCraft 64, a shining example of what happens when porting goes too far...

Solid finds. If that Fox Hunt is for PSX, it is one of the rarest games for the system. Still not worth a lot though.

I saw a sign on my way to work so I figured I would stop in for a couple of minutes.  The sale didn't start until 8:30 and I got there at around 8:10 or so.  The guy said I couldn't buy anything but I could put my name down on a sheet for when the sale actually started.  I'd never seen this before, but I guess it keeps things fair.  I couldn't stay so I didn't put my name down.  Have you guys seen this?  

I did have a weird encounter on my way out.  I was in my car waiting for traffic to clear to pull out.  As I'm waiting, 3 guys get out of their car and start heading towards the garage sale.  One of the older guys stops in front of my car and is staring me down.  After a few seconds I put my hands up to say, what do you want.  He still doesn't move or say anything.  A few more seconds go by and I start to lower my window.  He finally moves out of the way without saying anything.  I wonder if he was just disturbed.  So weird.

Estate sales work like that...or they have you take a number like at the deli.

You aren't in Illinois are you? That guy sounds like the one that I run into.

The final day for a local church rummage sale was this morning. Stopped by and picked up:

I took a chance and waited for the final hour's $5 bag sale. Picked up along with some books, toys, random housewares, and knitting stuff for the wife:

TIL Dell used to make HDTVs. I bought this 32" for $20 today. Will probably keep it until I move into a bigger apartment, my 50" is too big for it. Sound quality is amazing, it's a shame most TVs these days lack that.

Got some stuff today - but nothing too exciting.

$10 - PS2 with 10 games - nothing real memorable

$1 - Scarface for PS2

$2 - broken DSi - I need to tinker with this. They said they were just using it and it suddenly turned off and never worked again. If not sell it for parts.

$6 - two new muppet stuffed animals and a new cookie monster stuffed animal with shirt (will probably give the cookie monster to my niece)

$5 - Wii with a dancing game

 
Hey, does anyone here know any general rules for valuing Playboy back issues? Somehow I ended up with a quasi-vintage "attic" collection of 200-300 issues from 1965 through the 1980s. I'll put the full story in spoilers in case anyone wants to read.
 
Well CAG, with the cooling temperatures here in the Mid-Atlantic we finally got to enjoy a yardsale day which didn't completely suck. Our story begins with one of the greatest follies known to man.
 
Overflowing trunkload of Playboy magazines, 1960s thru 1980s - $35
 
Surprisingly enough I saw this one advertised on Craigslist with a 7:00 AM start time, mostly with the usual pics of junk 'o' glance through; however, the middle pic had old-school girlie everywhere so I made a garden-sprinkler spittle-face and decided to investigate.
 
Even though the 5:00 AM snipers have gotten quite bad around these parts, I set my arrival time at 6:30 AM to be conservat-early. Thought I might try reading a book with no sunlight, but the scene was already like an anthill with some hillbillies trying to lowball some fishing reels (because $5 each is too much). Most of the early crowd seemed to be milling off, not buying anything, but it just so happened I walked up as a middle-aged man was asking how much for the Playboys and I added that I was interested in getting their price as well... 
 
The seller came back with $20 bucks for all and was even devious enough to wedge myself and the other gent into a small-time bidding war-- the other guy was in a real weak position though because he wanted the seller to "hold them" (you're kidding, right?) at $20 and I was like "I'm not even that interested in this old stuff and I'll go $20." Somehow I ended up getting rolled up a couple of bucks before the other guy walked away... it was sort of odd too, he even tried doing a cash-in-face technique at $30. I've never seen somebody do that when I'm outbidding them at relatively low levels.
 
Just to give you an idea of this insanity, imagine bundles upon bundles of girlie mags tied up with string and in fall-apart boxes being loaded into the back of a car, like some sort of anti-slide device designed for winter driving. Finding fresh boxes for this mess is a nightmare too, yet somehow... well, can you really put a price on having a mountain of Playboys under your bed? Or how about two beds?
 
I'm probably going to end up selling some of these as yearly runs, or digitize them Captain Power style if selling isn't worthwhile. As much fun as it would be to create a mental prison out of these to fling my ex-girlfriend into, the forklift and warehouse requirements aren't something that I'm particularly into.
 
Had some other good finds that day too, picked up a bed-comforter for $8 from an older lady who apparently spends hundreds of dollars to dress-up guest bedrooms-- the actual conversation went something like "Yes, I will buy your complicated blanket... I could use a blanket" as she explained her various sequences.
 
As for video games, these were out of a big repeat flea market that's been so tapped-out, I guess my competition got disgusted and didn't look.

Two, two-two-two dollars total. $2. Just unbelievable. Not only does the seller *not* price check their games and lump them into the DVD pool with no distinction, but they might as well have buried the entire DVD lot within the core of the sun for how visible it was to passers by.
 
The only other thing to report which was sort of great was that there was a nice black family with a cane-wielding patriarch who directed suitable creeps such as myself to his sideline of "topshelf movies"-- (crate-porn of unknown origin), which might've been a queasy cherry to put ontop of the whole morning's outing. I just couldn't go for it though-- what with having enough Playboy mags to build a couch out of and all. Seriously, when you get this much, you don't even have room to look at it; it just becomes like a cocoon!

There was actually a reason for porting like that back in the day; I remember playing Command and Conquer and Populous: A New Beginning on the ps1 before saving up for my first halfway decent gaming pc (About $1200-1500 for a Pentium 3). The console route might have been your only way to enjoy those titles if you didn't have a whole lot of cash to burn.

I have Sirius in my car and depending on the price of adding another radio I may keep it for my office at work. I usually play music through youtube and the other streaming sites are blocked so it would be nice to just put on one of the stations for music.

If I don't want to I will just sell it all. The Ti will pay for the price of admission and it looks like the sirius stuff would sell for about 100 would looking at sold ones on the eBay.

Sirius radios are worth checking out, especially for cheap. They may be activated.

Our old sirius, that we deactivated 6 years ago, but still left hooked up in the car, got turned on for one of their free weeks. For some reason, it was never deactivated when the free week was over and we've been enjoying free sirius since, and that was 4 years ago. I checked out our account online just to make sure we weren't being charged and even there it's showing the unit as being deactivated.... :whistle2:k

 
Didn't find much this weekend. An old Playstation, very clean with cables for $3, Kirbys Dreamland for gameboy for .25, an Xbox 360 wireless controller for $5 and an Apple TV 3 for $10.

And then there's this, the most ridiculous buy of the weekend. Paid $10 for it. Getting it home was half the fun, since we were in the Cavalier and left the Jeep at home.

We still have no idea where we are putting it...

Ha, fair! I remember renting it from Blockbuster back in the day, but I can't remember which version I played first. We got our first PC from Black Friday sale at Walmart in 1998, I think, so it could have been either or.

As far as your Playboy find, I remember seeing that ad. I ended up sticking around my neighborhood, as there was a street festival. Lots of people were selling to take advantage of the crowds, plus I didn't want to give up my parking space. ;)

 
This is my rule of thumb for playboys:

Playboy pre 1965 are usually "the good ones". You can sell issues with specific celebs in them for more. Haven't checked for a while, but chyna, bai ling, vanna white, madonna, Pam Anderson, etc were usually "key" issues. If they do not have the centerfolds in them and they are 80s or newer, dump them in a lot.

And I will make a post for the hell of it. I have a few minutes. Keeping it porn related...

I bought a ton of comics from this guy and he had several boxes of dvds at 25 cents each. I don't have a scanner, so I took some guesses on what might have value and bought a couple things for my collection like the Lois and Clark set, Kingpin (upgrading from vhs), and the Sitter. I saw the one on top and I couldn't leave it...

Thanks for the info on these, I noticed with one of the Madonna issues and earlier the binding switches to a Vampirella-style format; I'm guessing that makes it tougher to find issues where the binding isn't all jacked up. Right now I'm sorting out the ones that are in really bad shape (water damage, destroyed cover) from the okay ones-- so far the oldest I've found goes back to 1963.

Edit: I hope you'll be watching Invasion U.S.A. and Pumpkinhead in the DVD lot you have there, those are the gems ;)

It's no joke on these; I pulled out like 50 so far that had waveyness running 10-20 pages in, from the front and back. Original owner probably had a leaky roof; fortunately there's so many mags that the "casualties" shielded the rest. Guy also tried taping the front cover of some to label the year-- like at one point he might've tried collecting them but it just got out of control.

It would figure that I would find one of the issues Slowdive mentioned, a Vanna White, completely shot. On the plus side I have a nice Christie Brinkley-- it's all part of the fun I suppose.

 
Got off my butt and went out for a couple hours before I had to go to work. No oldschool games to be found sadly, I asked at every sale. One sale a lady had about 20 decent PS3 games in a tub for $4 apiece, the games I got below for $6 apiece, and some BluRays for $2 apiece. I left behind a Monopoly game and Rayman Legends. Gave her the $49 I had on me. MGS and Dishonored are sealed. She said "some lady offered me $2 apiece for those games at 7:05 this morning.....we opened at 7!" 



 
One of my best finds recently. Got a vintage IBM Model M keyboard and Commodore monitor for $5 total. The clicky sound in those keys are wonderful
