The Official Android thread.

Motorola supposedly has some new big phone coming to ATT, the Olympus I think, but it's mostly rumor right now.

As far as phones stand for AT&T, whatever their version of the Galaxy S would be the best way to go right now. I normally would stand by HTC (I tend to love their phones), but the Aria is way underpowered, and the screen on it is garbage.

On a totally unrelated note, anyone know of a site that has a roundup of black friday phone sales? Trying to find the lowest price on a Mytouch 4g and a G2 (for me, and for my wife respectively) for price matching reasons.

Wow, cool!

I still might hold on to my glitchy 3GS till the summer and see what Apple has up their sleeve. (probably a dual core something, to combat the android market). As much as I dislike Apple, it still seems like Android needs to get its act together a little bit. Way too many phones come out, each with minor upgrades, yet updates for the phones follow wonky schedules. No one wants to go through hoops and hurdles to upgrade their phone that came buggy out the box.
Yup, the Vibrant (Galaxy S) would be the best Android as far as AT&T is concerned for now.
The Vibrant is Tmobile. The Captivate is AT&T and lacks the flash (on the camera) compared to the Fascinate on Verizon. I have the Fascinate and love it, but I like the feel of the Captivate better. I love the metal back on it.

It's my opinion that ATT purposefully cripples their android phones so as to keep them from competing with the iPhone. They want the iPhone to be their best phone, probably due to some agreement with Apple or just outright fear of pissing Apple off.

My two MyTouch 4G's will be at my door when i get home tonight. Bought A black and White one for $49.99 each Upgrade from Amazon Wireless. Hopefully it will allow me to see my Nexus one for a decent chunk of change as well.

Samsung really needs to pick things up and relase a patch for the Fascinate or 2.2 (if fixes are included in it), been experiencing a lot of lag issues with my phone lately, not sure why as nothing has changed. I've always experienced lag here and there but it somehow seems worse now.

I've noticed that too, Linkin. There is suppsoed to be a patch coming that will fix the GPS at least. It's out in the wild so to speak, but not released officially yet.

I'm noticing something, most smart phones seem to sell for around $500-$600 without contracts. Now think about that when you see a no contract tablet like the Samsung Tab going for not much more than a good phone without contract. Do these tablets really not cost much more to make than a phone?

Nope. Even the biggest, baddest phones(no matter the platform) cost less than $200 to manufacture.

Even adding R&D and marketing costs, $500-$600 MSRP are ridiculous.

Welcome to cell manufacturers' corporate greed!

Then the tablets are even more grossly overpriced. Which thankfully some are pretty affordable. Viewsonic has a tablet out which, despite the shitty software, is pretty good. Once it's rooted and had a better rom installed it's pretty decent. It's nowhere near the price of a Galaxy Tab either.

Huh? I was talking about the G-Tablet.

In other news, The Halloween and Christmas editions of Angry Birds are up.

The Halloween one was, they released it for Android now, guess the Christmas one wasn't going to be.

BTW Clak, a while back you asked about changing the lock screen for the Fascinate and I suggested Widgetlocker. I bought it and its awesome, if I could take a screenshot I would, but combined with beautiful widget its pretty tight!

Thanks, I'll check it out.

I just got an Android phone (LG Optimus T) and I can't seem to import my contacts from my SIM card. I go to contacts, press menu, choose import from SIM, and check all my contacts. It says it's completed, but I still have no contacts. Any thoughts?

Go back to where you got your phone, take your old phone and your new phone and have them transfer the contacts. It will be the easiest way. Shouldn't matter what type of phone either, I transferred the ones from my iPhone to my Fascinate without any issues.

Hardware sounds good til you realize it's a Resistive screen... Fail.

Yeah, that is the only catch I've found. From what I've read though it's pretty good for resistive.

Ended up rooting my Fascinate and installing a new rom. Man this thing is so much better now. No more bing or samsung/VZW bloatware. No more lag or just general unresponsiveness.

My fucking Samsung Moment sucks dick.

Not really but it sucks. My data lockup occurs more than usual and the phone is already pretty slow as it is so sometimes I'm not even sure if it's a lock up until I try using something else that requires data.

I can't wait till March and I can change phones.

Anyone know of any new phones coming in the new year? Or a website that keeps track of Android phone releases?

I know the Nexus S just came out but that's only for T Mobile currently.

What do you mean by "general unresponsiveness"?

Also how did you root? I'm done waiting for 2.2 I want to give rooting a shot if it is worth it.

That looks pretty slick VIP!

Just general lag really. There would just be slight delays doing things. Like say swithcing from my app frawer back to the home screen would have a little hitch, like it would hesitate. After rooting and installing the new rom all of that is gone.

You could try z4root, it's probably the easiest way, but ti wouldn't work for me. Plus it was taken off the marketplace so you'd have to find it online. I ended up using this method of rooting, about as easy really.

After that you can follow these instructions to get clockwork mod installed if you want to flash a different rom. It may sound complictaed sometimes, but it really isn't. Just have patience.

Thanks, it's more functional than pretty but it's been helpful.

It isn't at the moment unfortunately. I used JT's superclean rom. Will take care of all the bing/VZW crapware. Fair warning though, it replaced the stock Samsung music app with another one which I don't really care for.

That androidcentral forum is a good place for help too, it's where I started getting information for all this.

Believe it or not even though I'm rooted, that isn't made up from anything that's from rooting. It's launcher pro and widgets.
I've used and still currently use http://www.sdx-developers.com/ for all my rooting needs. Community is relatively small on there in comparison to android central, most of the people are very helpful on SDX though.

Figured I'd throw that out there.
That's the one I've been reading on too, and they have a forum App that works great.

My Archos layout isn't any where close to my Phone, but...

I want a tablet, but I don't want to pay the $500+ that some are selling for. I'm hoping that some small company will make a device that has good hardware but crappy software. That way when it doesn't sell well I can snag one for cheap and hopefully just install a new rom. The Viewsonic g tablet is decent, but that resistive screen is a turn off.
