The Official Guitar Hero II Thread (80's Edition Confirmed w/initial tracklist!)

Finally got some quality time with the demo yesterday. Beat all the songs on Expert, but Psychobilly Freakout is by far the best (and hardest). Also paid off my pre-order in full while I was at EB. I'm so fucking ready for this game.

I only tried Psychobilly once or twice and failed...I was too busy rockin' out to Anthrax. That song is so satisfying to play, it's ridiculous. :)

...I want this game NOW.
The OP really needs to be updated. In fact, this thread should just be renamed "Guitar Hero 2 Discussion".
I updated it last night with the remaining bonus tracks, so I'm not sure what was outdated at that point. I just removed the rumors since they're not needed anymore.

Anyway, here's some Trogdor for those interested:
I'll have to look into this hacked demo thing.
I know what you mean, if I had my PS2 modded, I'd be all over it right now. Especially after seeing this:

Seriously, what is the hacked demo. It's the new 10-song demo, but somehow people are unlocking the rest of the songs? I'm sure it's nothing difficult, but I can't find a darn thing on it.

And I don't have that demo, so it's not like it matters anyway.

EDIT: Holy CRAP! I don't know how to hack it to get all the rest of the songs, but heck, I'll just take the demo! It's "available," if you know what I mean. I had a whim to go look for it and found it without any hassle.

There's a patch(a couple actually) available that will allow you to unlock the other songs on the demo. There's actually about 30 songs(one of which is the Quiet Riot song) on the demo and the patch will switch out different songs with the 10 that are normally available. You should be able to find all you need to patch the demo here.
Whoa whoa whoa whoa....Quiet Riot is in the game?
Maybe, maybe not. The song could just be in the demo and not in the final game. RO/Harmonix did say that Quiet Riot wasn't going to be in, but it seems like this would be a lot of work for nothing if the song isn't in the final game. Maybe they were able to keep a secret or two after all. Guess we'll find out once November 7 rolls around.

THANK YOU for the link to the PPF patches. I'm putting three versions on my HDD. Original, first patch, second patch. I'll be able to play nearly half of the GH2 songs in a couple minutes.

EDIT: It freaking rocks. Any links to getting multiplayer working? Practice mode works, though it plays the original song, not the hacked song. I couldn't get multiplayer to work at all. Froze on the loading screens. I've seen videos of people playing coop on these songs so I know it's possible.

EDIT #2: That site is awesome. Tons of useful programs and such.

How's practice mode?

Only some of the songs work on co-op, they didn't include the data for it on most of them so it freezes on the loading screen. IIRC, Sweet Child and Killing in the Name Of both worked fine.

The last page of the thread linked earlier has a list of songs that work in coop.

Practice mode is cool, but odd. It's almost... too slow? Like, on YYZ, I tried doing the bass solo and could swear that I'm hitting it perfectly, but it doesn't count. It's hard to explain. You'll just have to try it at a store.

With the hacked songs, it's still doable, even though it's playing a different song at a different tempo and not playing anything you hit, but it works for now.

EDIT: Next weekend I can play some requests in the CAG Chat. Can't do it during the weekdays because I work WAY early and have to go to bed early as well.

So I'm assuming I can't hack this if I don't have some sort of modded PS2, right?

Dammit, I don't want to wait another week and a half for this.

My PS2 isn't modded. All you need is to download the newly released 10 song demo, the two patches, and have a method to play burnt discs (modchip, Swap Magic) or have HDLoader.

I have HDLoader.

EDIT: I'm playing down the list right now.

Sweet Child o' Mine was fun.

Laid to Rest physically hurt me. I beat it, and though it did have a few tough moments, it wasn't hard overall, but the amount of normal speed fretting simply injured my wrist and arm.

Still can't beat Beast and the Harlot.

Freebird was slow for WAAAAY too long. After it picked up, I fought for survival. And eventually lost. I don't think people will be happy with the inclusion of the legendary Freebird after they've played five minutes into it just to fail on the solos. Absolutely the Bark at the Moon of Guitar Hero II.

EDIT #2: I've never heard Mother, but it's horrible. It sounds terrible, it plays terrible. My least favorite Guitar Hero II song so far.

Tattooed Love Boys had some uber ridiculous chording that I still don't know how to play, though I somehow beat it.

This game is going to be awesome. I can't wait.

Going to bed soon. I might make some vids later in the week.
They didn't, it sounds and plays fine.
Awesome, thanks.

Hm, but this seems like too big of a band to hide in the bonus tracks...and wouldn't we have gotten word of it if it was in the game, since people have the final release in some stores? That's how we got the bonus songs, after all...

Man, I hope they're in there somehow, though. That would rule.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed, but is anyone else pissed that RO fucked over customer who own 3rd party controllers?

My SG controller broke (from overuse), so I bought a wireless Flying V to replace it. I was so excited when I got my OPM demo in the mail, only to have my dreams crushed that the game was deliberately made to be incompatible with 3rd party guitars. Not only that, but I'll be forced to pay $80 rather than $50 if I want to play GH2.

I am incredibly disappointed that RO has sunk to this level, especially considering that they wouldn't be around if they hadn't made the unofficial DDR ignition pads. This just pisses me off to no end that the company has gotten a little fame and now they turn to fucking their faithful customers just because they're bitter about a lawsuit that they started with TAC.

You're half right - the instrumentation sounds good, but that singer just can't pull off a decent Danzig. But then again, few can...

The demo is locked out on them, yes, but rumor has it that they'll be available to use on the full game. The thing is that for some reason, the 4 song demo has no traditional controller support, which the TAC registers as.
That was insane. I don't know how I'm going to get past that on Expert.

Other than an HD method, you'd need a DVD burner for the hack, right?
?

If you mave a modchip, then yeah, you just need to burn the iso to dvd.

If not, you just need a hard drive and a dvd player to copy the iso. Or you can just use your ps2 to make the iso.

I suggest everybody should just wait until it comes out. It's only another week anyway.

Yea, you are right. I blame the new 10 song demo EB/Gamestop has, which has made the wait even harder. I was able to play a couple songs at their kiosk over the weekend, and the songs are tremendously satisfying.

Madhouse was amazing. Also one of my favorite songs on the new track list, "Trippin' on A Hole in A Paper Heart", was really fun to play. 3 button chords galore.

I really hope practice mode allows me to learn to move my hand down/up a fret so I can play hard and expert. I can't really get past the 2nd tier of songs in GH1 on hard.

Just tried playing with a PS2 controller. They ruined it. The first one was so perfect. You now have to hit EVERY SINGLE NOTE. You can't hold down Green (L2) and press Yellow (R1) for a bunch of Green/Yellow chords. You have to hit BOTH of them every time.

That makes me extremely sad. But that's not how it worked in the OPM demo. It played just like the first game. Rumor has it that this 10 song demo is an older build, hence the Quiet Riot song. Hopefully that's the case. There's also some bizarre slowdown that I don't remember in the OPM demo, so it's looking likely the rumor is true.

There's apparently a Blink 182 song on this, too. Hopefully that guy will release a patch for the few remaining songs.

Why in God's name would you play with a regular controller?

That would make sense. There's a lot of slowdown in the demo (Madhouse always lags for me), least on non-hack versions. I really hope that's fixed before launch.
Because it's enjoyable?
But dude, that's like saying you'd rather wack off than have intense anal monkey sex with *insert girl of choice here*!!

Agreed, 100%.

Hey, anal monkey sex with a fine female is great and all, but sometimes you need the real thing.

Anyway, I'm glad to see I'm not the only person who isn't very good (i.e., can't finish GH1 on Hard). I'm trying to talk myself into waiting for GH2 until I can get some more hours in, but I really want to play those songs. This month is going to be insane.

I'm not entirely sure what happened...I struggled to learn Medium, then struggled through most of Hard, and quit for a month or so...then just decided to say "fuck it" and started on Expert...and quickly got good at it. *shrugs*

Never give up!

Come now, give up? I don't care if I have to play Medium for the rest of my life, the game is a fucking riot. But of course you know this, it must have simply slipped your mind.

It can be frustrating as hell. I gave up on career when I couldn't beat "Cochise" on expert to advance to the next group of songs. I don't like the song, and I was dreadful at it. By some stroke of luck, I "got it" today and somehow beat it. Now that goddamned Queens of the Stone Age song stands in my way.

It's a combination of "getting" a song and strategically using your star power. It's easier to "get" a song you like or are very familiar with (Ace of Spades, for instance).

I hope that practice mode changes all this; I'm improving in my hammer-ons/pull-offs, but I'm still not very good.

DLed a 10 song demo with YYZ, John the Fisherman, Madhouse, Trippin on something something, Warpigs and some others.

John the Fisherman's probably my favorite so far...not the funnest song to play, but the song just kicks ass. Frizzle fry is such a great album.

froze up on madhouse though, so I guess it's a hacked copy or proto.

No One Knows gave me one hell of a fucking challenge way back when I was working my way through Expert. Good luck.

I didn't give up out of frustration, more like I got distracted away by another game or two...but my return was glorious, dammit!

Agreed. The song will be a million times more fun to play on Co-Op though, since someone will be able to play the bass. Go Les Claypool.

I don't think I'll ever beat Frankenstein, Bark at the Moon and Cowboys From Hell on Expert. They are the last 3 I have to do.

I didn't think so either, but then I randomly nailed Frankenstein the other day...and despite what you say, I'll get Cowboys From Hell someday. Mark my words.

Anyway, I played John the Fisherman Co-Op yesterday, and it was indeed awesome (and hard!).

Got the game in January and played through the entire Medium career the day I bought it. I then played it for hours every day for about a month. Beat every song, five-starred all but a few, and moved on to Hard. About a week or two later, I tried Expert and got distracted for a while. Finally went back and beat it, and have played GH at the very least once a week, though usually more.

Expert really isn't that hard. Sure, I still struggle on a few songs (I failed gloriously on the Decontrol solo last weekend), but it isn't too difficult once you jump into it. They nailed the difficulty ramp. It progresses perfectly.

I have small hands, though, so I have to move my entire hand down a fret in order to nail the orange button, and this is really difficult because of the way I have to hold the controller.

Oh, and I destroyed my BOTM score on medium a couple days ago. My previous high was around 70k. My new one is over 127k.

"Because of the way you hold the controller"? What the Hell are you doing with that thing? I always shift my hand down for the Orange, or sometimes twice for the Yellow/Orange chords...you'd be shifting your hand even more to play a rel guitar, so it's not really a big deal.
