Rewritable blu-ray discs ay? that affects like all 3 people who have BR burners

background downloading is sounding better, though I hope they add support for downloads during offline games like the 360.

UPDATE: We've received word from Sony that you will indeed be able to play games while downloading content in the background. Similar to how downloads on the Xbox 360 works, you'll be able to play games offline while downloads work in the background, and if you hop online your queue will simply pause until you disconnect.

yippee~ lol

Sweet!

so I guess that means there's a resume option now too. that's great...sucks when you're 90% done and your wi-fi drops for a minute, losing all that progress >_

"Up to 6 pieces of content from the PlayStation store can be queued up for download while the user enjoys other functions of the PS3 system, including playing games, browsing the web, using media functions including photo browsing, video and music playback. Progress of downloads can be easily tracked under a new Download Management menu under the XBM's network icon." -1UP

Who's going to be first to report this sweet new update is up?

Not I, good night everyone.
I will be testing out the remote play tomorrow.

I have to say 1.6 was the fastest download I had to date. I'm downloading folding@home right now....and I'm stuck looking at the same page till it's done downloading.

I'm viewing the trailer for 300 on my PSP using Remote Play and my 20GB PS3! It looks fantastic. I didn't really expect the feature to work, since my PS3 (and 360) are hooked into my wireless network through a gaming adapter, but it seems to be fine. Video chokes if the wireless signal isn't strong though, which limits its usefulness in some areas of the house.
they had that feature before... you had to hold square, then press l2 and/or r2 to zoom in and out.
No, this is REAL zoom. That was like... 2 or 3 steps, none of which made the image big enough. Now you can zoom in as far as you want and get SUPER close up if you desire.

Mess with the settings on the PS3 and PSP Icruse. You can set it to give up video quality for better speeds. Seems to work better and still looks rather good for me.

Got Folding@Home too (50MB). Trying to figure out what all the lights on the map means. If those are other people using the program... that is crazy! Going to look it up now.

And it looks like you can have "Teams", CheapyD (someone else) wanna make a CAG team?

Sweet I'm glad they finally fixed the HD web browser issue. I have a 50" TV and could not read the text when using the PS3 web browser on the largest font setting.

I don't know if it worked this way before, but under ? players met? it has the names of people i played resistance today.

Oh and there are new icons for the psn network account.

I posted this in the wrong thread earlier...

I'm posting this from my PS3 using my bluetooth keyboard -- were those usable before this update? I'll have to say that the browser still sucks, although it's marginally better than the Wii. I did finally manage to find a setting where the text was readable, but the browser is quite slow and hard to use. I tried out background downloading and it seems to work as advertised, although the download speed seemed to slow way down when I was doing something like playing a game or a Blu-ray movie. Better than just staring at the progress bar, though.

I'm down with a CAG folding team. I'll add you guys later today. I love how you can see how lit up each country is. It's amusing/sad to look at east asia, which is all completely lit up, except for one black spot where north korea is.

They do have a score system which is posted onto webpages (you can access them through the program). I saw one for the user, and then also the team they are on. It shows you a list, and where you are ranked on your team, how many points your team as collected and so on.
Any word on the software backwards compatible games? Upscaled resolutions? Any of that in this update?
nope. looks like the rumors were wrong. we'll probably get software BC when those systems roll out in the U.S.

If you make a folding team, I'm in as well. I only played with the update briefly since I had to go to work and have not had a chance to try the settings again. How do you activate the folding@home to work when you have your system in idle mode?

well remote play is cute and now possible via access point for us 20gb people. Completely useless as it is now though, it seems to lag horribly. Anyone else with the 60GB without accessspoint anda psp get better results?
1.6 enabled BC but not the fancy upscaling and all that.
So maybe next update...
thinking about the upscaling of dvds, Id like to see the Playstation 3 playing a dvd in 480p vs an upscaled dvd by the 360 and see if it really makes a different.

It's more noticeable for some DVDs than others, but really, the difference isn't that great.
Any BD or HDDVD beats it by a mile.

I'd much rather see upscaled games, or better yet, older games actually rendered in a higher resolution.

Man, why do these updates take so long? The 360 updates are like a minute. Is it just my ps3 having a crappy wi fi connection?

I know this firmware supports background dling, but I sure wish I had it while dling the firmware itself.

i don;t know about your network setting, but mines is pretty fast, i got the Linksys G 2.4... Of course it's not lightning fast, but it's not like half of hour or something. Well, once you DL the update, you have to install it and that takes time too.

BG DLing is really cool, i finally got all of the demos DL'd in one night! Of course, i used that opportunity to charge my two sixaxis as well. Nice...

Hmm, DLing the firmware in BG is interesting...

Harrison just briefly mentioned that in the (far) future the PS3 could handle DVD upscaling.

But I remember reading somewhere that this has been cast aside and wont be happening anymore.

Thanks, awe man, sucks, but no biggies, with the HD format war going on, upscale dvd players should be relatively cheap (below $50 )

I dont understand that folding home thing. I just did the update the other day when I got the new system. I didnt mess with it since I didnt understand it.

Do you remember where you read that because last thing I heard is it was going to happen somewhere down the line.

- You can now download PlayStation format software from the PS Store and play it on your PS3

- You can use saved data for PlayStation format software on the PSP

- You can use the vibration function of accessories that are for use with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 format software.
