The Official Sonic and the Secret Rings Thread (Out Now!)
Meh, that's faulty logic and it's still $50 more or less since you could put the coupon and gift card toward any other $50 game that may be better than Sonic.

I'd wait for the reviews to come out (as I disagree that embargoes aren't usually a forebearer of a shitty game, movie, album etc.--again if its quality they want the hype from early positive reviews).
True, sorta. If the coupon didn't expire at the end of February, then I'd wait for something else. Super Paper Mario? Cooking Mama? Of course. But I'm hoping that this game is $30 good :)

Where that even if it's pretty good..some games don't live up to that $50 good..(or $60 for 360/PS3 titles..)

WarioWare Smooth Moves is a perfect example. It's a really good and fun game. But $50? No thanks.

I have the coupon and a $25 gift card, so I am thinking about getting this, so that's a little over $16 out of pocket with tax .....
Thanks for that brief take on it, Lee. :) Is your review online yet or is that being held for a few days (or still being written)?
I submitted it to Yahoo this weekend. It'll probably go up tomorrow.
For what it's worth, I don't know how reliable "Game on" is, hope this has not been posted already.

Sonic and the Secret Rings Review by Game On

This is a summary of the Nintendo Wii game Sonic and the Secret Rings Review by the video game TV show Game On:
9.2 out of 10
Pros:
 • Fast, enjoyable gameplay
 • Tons of replay value
 • Good camera
 • Good controls that-once you get used to them-work with the game nicely
 • Story that is funny on purpose
 • Enjoyable Multiplayer
 • Japanese voices available
Cons:
 • English VA’s
 • Annoying helper Shahra
 • Some level up powers seem like they should of been available from start”
I thought "Game On" are the people who gave the truly horrible "Sonic the Hedgehog" on PS3 and XBOX 360 an 8.6.
I submitted it to Yahoo this weekend. It'll probably go up tomorrow.
ViolentLee,

Do you think this would be a hard game for the average 10 year old ?

Thanks

Interesting - well, hopefully some reviews become live at midnight tonight.

If this is even in the 6-7 range I will definitely hope that my GR preorder comes through as it will pretty much be the last thing I can get from them with my local GR store closing down early March. They didn't even get Ratchet and Clank for the PSP in, though, so we'll see (but they did get Diddy Kong Racing, so go figure). And I have credit to burn of course... So the cost would only be $20-$25 for me if I can get it there. Otherwise, I'm probably not spending $40 on it (Best Buy w/coupon) and thus will have to wait for some deal/price drop.

And Also, VL, I have the same question as fshaia, except I'd want to know about 4 and 7 year-olds ;). I know they have some difficulty with Sonic Adventure 2 (we've never been able to get through it but I haven't put much time into it myself).

lol good to know. Good to know.

It was pretty fun at E3, and I'd really like something new to put in my Wii - so I'll be picking it up. I'll play Crackdown first, though, I'm sure.

anyone familiar with how Best Buy handles games' releases? They list 2/21 on the website, is that likely when it'll hit the floor or might they get it out Tuesday?

Think it depends on the individual store. At my local one, they get it the day after the listed release date. I fully expect them to get it on the 21st.

:( Still nothing, review-wise.

I figure I will still pick it up at lunch since I'm going out to get Crackdown. I'll just leave it sealed until the reviews come in.
1 review as of now no idea how well this site is , but I hope it as good as they say being I really want a new Wii game. Link to Review Over at Gaming-Age.com they gave Sonic a B+.
Don't know how their opinions stack up to mine, but it's promising relative to their past reviews:

If that sounds a bit harsh, go out and spend $60 of your hard earned cash on Sonic the Hedgehog for the Xbox 360 (we gave it an F) and see if you don’t agree. Between the hazardous waste that was Shadow the Hedgehog (it managed to score a bit better with a D) and Sonic Rivals (we awarded that one with a C) there have been surprising hits like Sonic Rush for DS (an A-) and Sonic Heroes (B-).
Don't know how their opinions stack up to mine, but it's promising relative to their past reviews:
haha I was thinking the same , just because how they graded the other Sonic titles.
Lol. I just posted a link to a review.
Look at our post times. I didn't see your link because it wasn't there yet. :)

At any rate, that sounds promising, I'm still holding out for a couple of the bigger sites reviews though.

Someone who failed the 360/PS3 game and gives Secret Rings a "Very good, but not perfect" rating sounds legit to me... or that's just me hoping ;)

I'll give it a few more reviews and CAG impressions, but I might be biting on it, I've been impressed from what I've seen so far.

Have a nice day.
Has anyone tried calling other stores, like Best Buy?
My Best Buy didn't have it when I went to pick up Crackdown.

Ditto. They said tomorrow.

No, I think it'd be right up their alley. It's pretty lax, difficulty-wise. The main thing is getting used to the controls. Levels are short enough and many let you respawn after you die.

7.5/10

In the wake of all the recent PS2, PSP, and DS ports, it's encouraging to see that a from-the-ground-up Wii game can look really hot. From a purely technical viewpoint, the textures, polygons, and effects here demonstrate the Wii's step-up-from-GameCube graphical muscle. While nothing here looks like Gears of War or MotorStorm, some stages approach Resident Evil 4–level artistry, thanks to wise aesthetic decisions.
Perhaps all the singing (and we're talking every stage) is forgivable in lieu of the fact that Secret Rings is more fun than any other Sonic in years. The radically deconstructed gameplay has you steering the 'hog by holding the Wii Remote horizontally and tilting it right and left. Sonic's homing attack serves as your main offense, delivered via locking on and thrusting the Wii-mote forward. The controls feel a tad reckless at first -- Sonic's momentum takes some getting used to, and trying to go in reverse is a pain -- but become more natural and fluid as you get acclimated to the fast-paced, twitchy action. It's almost as if you combined a surreal, motion-controlled racing game with the tricky, pinpoint platforming of Super Mario Sunshine. Once you've crested that learning curve, the game's true design shines through: Expert play allows you to pull off long combo strings that send you hurtling through stages at breakneck speed...it's immensely satisfying, breathtaking stuff.

Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes oh fuck yeah. fuck fuck fuck fuck yeah, I about to ding to 40 in Wacraft and Sonic doesn't suck, fuck yeah. I should be getting it this weekend, awesome.

Slightly better review than I was expecting, but still not a $50 purchase for me. Game has to be something I think will be a personally 9.0 or above game for me to shell out full retail.

May give it a rental sometime when (if) I get caught up on my backlog on other systems.

The controls sound kind of annoying to me...I'm beginning to question if all this motion control stuff is really my cup of tea as most uses of it seem to be turning me off (when I was exicted about the possibilities before getting the Wii).

I guess I just want to see more immersive uses (like swinging the sword etc. in Zelda) not stuff like this where it seems gimmicky. I'd rather just control sonic with the analog stick as usual, not have him barrel along and steer him by tiliting the Remote and attack by thrusting it forward. That just seems like shallow gameplay with a gimmicky control scheme to me.
Thanks Lee. Interesting that you found high points in some of the things that others have found low (multiplayer and music).

Hopefully Best Buy puts this out tomorrow. Time to get it for $40 and another month of Xbox live for $3.
I seriously loved the music. It beats the uninspired tripe most platformer-esque games toss at you. But I can see how it might strike other people different ways. As I said in the review, I love the "Sonic Boom" song from Sonic CD, too. That was more poppy compared to Secret Rings' metal slant.

Multiplayer wasn't my cup of tea, honestly, but I admire the sheer size and depth of it. I hate Mario Party games, but Sonic Wii's is as good as any -- especially when I wasn't really expecting any multiplayer at all. I'm a little surprised Sega didn't try to put the Party mode out at full price as Sonic Shuffle 2 or something. It was a case of me acknowledging its benefits even when I wasn't that into it.

"Best 3D Sonic yet" 6.9. Lower than I thought all around, but still gonna nab it.
Bravo to Matt for explaining his score:

I want to take moment to specifically explain the score. For me, Sonic and the Secret Rings offers moments of greatness where I find myself caught up in the intensity of the experience and, oppositely, moments where I want to pull my hair out or throw the Wii remote down because of imprecise control or insulting design choices. I think that some gamers, particularly diehard Sonic fans, will be able to get past these drawbacks and enjoy the great times, which are also in supply. However, for me it's really pretty simple. Call me harsh, but I don't believe you should be forced to deal with the bad to enjoy the good and hence, I've scored the game with that in mind.
My older brother maintains that Sonic's decline began the second he stepped foot on a Nintendo console. Something about "sacrilege", and how "the Beast will rise from the depths and consume our sinful flesh" if we allow such an "abomination unto the LORD" to continue. I dunno, I kinda tuned him out after a while.

Slightly more on topic, I anticipate grabbing this game when it hits $30 Cdn.
Nah, THe first 2 sonic games on Nintendo consoles were on the Dreamcast first.

Anyway, I think Tiger woods is still my #1 to get right now. Maybe when this gets cheap. (that seems to be a recurring theme among wii games...)

Yay for thread derailment!

Were things that different on the GC? The DC sonics weren't that bad. The sonic/shadow parts of SA2 were pretty good, I thought.
Yay for thread derailment!

The Final Rush level on SA2 was worth the $40 DC launch price tag by itself though. ;)

I think on IGN's review, I fit into the category of people who will overlook the bad and enjoy the good. But we'll see. I'm excited to play it. After this I'm not buying another game till I've beaten it, Crackdown, Gears of War, and something else I've sure. I've splurged too much lately, and yet paid about $250 under MSRP in the last 4 days ;)

Agreed. These reviews have all bolstered the excitement I already had.

Reading Matt's review and his explanation, I can understand why he took it down a few notches, but I'm not the type to get hung up on a flaw or two as long as there are sufficient moments of greatness; take Red Steel, for instance.

Please explain about the XBox live deal

I hated everything Sonic Adv. 2 and beyond. Especially SA2... I fell into the bottomless pit so many times with Shadow, falling through grind rails. But my biggest problem was how little you played Sonic in SONIC Adventure 2. If they had named it "Sonic and HIS SLOW-ASS FRIENDS", I would have at least been warned.

I love a lot of games with horrid controls. I plowed into offscreen enemies in NiGHTS, until I memorized their location. So if that's the worst of the complaints, I'll pick it up Thursday. :)
Ding, now I am deffiently buying it, I liked the first sonic adventure and if he claims it is better, ding.
Since everyone else is digressing, I just gotta say: That's the worst attempt at spelling "definitely" that I've ever seen, and I've been consistently on the internet for 10+ years. :applause:

I think he was subtly (or at least subconscously) combining "definitely" with "defiantly": as in he is definitely getting it in defiance of any flaws pointed out by reviewers .

Penny Arcade called it "Tails and Knuckles stupid shitty adventure", so I feel you there.

Secret rings is currently available now on Gamefly, so whee!

Bravo to Matt for explaining his score:

I can appreciate where he is coming from, but this is the same person that gave Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz an 8.5. So take his review with a grain of salt.

Eh. Looks fun, but this seems like a game that I'll wait to go down in price- maybe 30. I enjoy Sonic games, but I'm nowhere near "diehard",, and it seems like I won't enjoy a full fifty dollar's worth.

Anybody have any impressions from playing it yet? I want to buy it but I might just hold off until Major League 2k7 comes out next week.
