I have been listening to the audiobooks at the gym and at work. It really surprises me that a series aimed at a young adult audience has the kind of depth that these do.

Gears 3 is actually pretty fun and I have to say it's one of the better implementations of Horde mode I've seen. I kind of hope they release a GOTY edition with all DLC at some point.
