The RPG thread has reached level 2!

Okay, this is absolutely absurd. I've been in the final dungeon of Bowser's Inside Story for
FOR THREE HOURS! And I don't even think I'm close to being done.
Talk about a pacing problem, sheesh. And the bad thing is I can't leave because I'd have to go through everything AGAIN.

Are there saves at least? 3 hrs in one place is crazy in a portable game. Reminds me I still have to finish Partners in Time. I'm prolly 20 mins or less from the final boss, but I got tired of having to spam items to do any decent damage. Do battles still take so fucking long in Bowser's? I love both M&L games, but the battles in PiT get so fucking tedious I've stopped playing like 6 times.

There are a lot of saves there. I just finished it up.

Time at the save before going into the Final Dungeon: 16:00 hours flat
Time at the save before facing the Final Boss: 21:12 hours

Yikes. Talk about overkill. So 6 hours roughly if you include the Final Boss and Cutscenes. But I didn't get the highest rank. I could go back and farm until I got there, but I don't feel that it's worth it.

Since TWEWY was brought up a few days ago , my brother has been complaining about a lack of games that he's interested in playing and I've been trying to help him finds some. This has to do with TWEWY because he was a really big fan of that game. Anybody have any suggestions of something he might like based "just" on liking that?

I played about an hour of Chrono Trigger and I'm enjoying it so far. The music in the game is awesome too.
Kingdom Hearts

Neku is basically Sora
Except that Neku is a bit more emo.

But yeah, if he likes TWEWY's aesthetic and battle system, Kingdom Hearts is a good fit.

One opposite though:
Sora = I must reunite with my friends
Neku = Friendship. FRIENDSHIP?

I'll throw out Persona 3 and Persona 4, I mean plot wise they aren't really all that similar but if your brother enjoyed the modern setting of TWEWY he'd probably dig the realistic setting of the Persona series. Also the music in the the Persona series and TWEWY are fairly similar with a focus on a sort of pop-electronica style.

If he liked the game for the fast-paced combat he might want to check out the Tales series like Symphonia, Abyss, and Vesperia; maybe Tales of Abyss especially since Luke definitely has his emo moments. Also the Star Ocean series has fast paced combat as well.

So im picking Tales of the Abyss back up where I left off last year. Thank god for RPGs with synopsis built in.
30 hours into it now. How long is this game?

I'm in the same situation you are with Abyss. I've been playing it off and on for the past several months and the synopsis helps. There's a lot of RPGs I stoped played just cause I put it down for too long, try to come back and I'm totally lost.

I almost did this with Nocturne. I'm glad I forced myself back into it after a year of putting it down.

I keep saying I'll go back to Nocturne and ToA(I have to be close to done with it). I think I'm going to try and cut down on how many games I buy next year in order to take care of my backlog(And replay Dragon age and ToV).

Seven days ago, almost to the hour, I beat Tales of the Abyss. Objectively, Vesperia is a little better. But I enjoyed Abyss more because I had a nice long Thanksgiving break so I could put in 10+ hour days. I got so immersed. It may have been my most enjoyable RPG experience to date. 60 hours total for me.

The only minor problem with Abyss is the occasional "ad-hoc storytelling". It kind of feels like they thought "We should have the party go here and do this, but it doesn't quite fit. Whatever, let's just make something up about seventh fonons, hyperresonance, miasma, yadda yadda." Vesperia also did this, but less so.

Halfway through Abyss there's a period where you run around to previously visited cities and it becomes a fetch-quest. At times the story is a clusterfuck but the great characters pull it together and keep you intrested. In other words the story is typical JRPG fare but with great character development.

I think I'd like to check out Abyss someday, but I have a thing about only buying new games and to get Abyss sealed would run like $80 minimum. Ah well, plenty of other games in the sea.

It doesn't seem like you'll get to Vesperia either, given the things I've heard about Dragon Age.

I really need to get back to Lost Odyssey soon. I'm near the end, and I've taken around 2 months off from it. Luckily I know where I am
I'M ON A BOAT! Oh and the boob lady expressed her true feelings for the Jackass Thief
.

Just getting into work, and upon checking my email Phantasy Star; Portable 2 shipped out. Very happy about that.

Also got a chance to sit down with Dragon Age on Sunday, I think I am falling in love with this game.

On a side note, do I have to wait till Mass Effect 2 comes out before the code with go though for the bonus armor that came with DA, keeps giving me a invalid code error.

You should just start buying every RPG at release in case you want to play it. I'd say that especially applies to any game in the Tales series.

Or you can get over your "new" fetish and buy a gently used copy but, of course, it's up to you. You can always sell the game after you're done.

Dragon Age is pretty addicting. Although I am trying to see if I can get Demon Souls. I believe if I can get it under $40 then even though I will get my butt kicked (as from people saying you will die constantly) I will try to make my time balanced between both games.

I haven't played Demons Souls, but rest assured that a few battles in Dragon Age will make you tear your fucking hair out. The great thing about the game is you can always get through it with the right strategy... or by putting the difficulty down to easy. But where's the fun in that?

The worst is backing yourself into a corner with equipment/abilities though. I made that mistake a couple times and promptly slapped myself in the face.

Actually this happened to me at the tower where I was about to quit but I was able to beat the monster on the top level (circle tower). I do not know why the difficultly is not balanced and how you always get screwed. Thanks for the information. I have not even tried to go to recruit the different groups.

I was wondering if anyone can answer, is Crimson Gem a decent RPG for the PSP? I am thinking about getting this and saw some decent reviews but still on the fence for this title.

The difficulty is heavily dependent on where you go first. Hint: Tower first. Elves last. You'll thank me when you don't run out of healing items.
Rei, I love you avatar! WOOOO, RUNAWAYS!!!!
Probably my favorite series from Marvel.

I didn't have any problems with difficulty in Dragon Age. Except for the last battle, and that was because I forgot I could summon troops to help out.

It is really good, I've been reading up on the tpbs lately and I'm up to 7. My favorite Runaway is Gert,
I really wish she didn't die.

Seriously. Why couldn't they kill off Chase instead? I never liked him.

Question about MagnaCarta 2. Does the story in the game have any connection or anything to the original game , or are they both just stand alone games connected by name only?
Interesting, I did Elves first, then the Tower, and now I'm underground. You just have to make sure you can make health poultices.
Aye, I did Elves first and tower last on my first run.

Enormous mistake on so many levels.

I actually really like Chase. Well, at least I did when Gert was there with him. They worked really well as a couple. I expect Chase to be killed off relatively soon as he doesn't really seem to have anything left to lose since Old Lace died. The only one of the Runaways I never really got attached to or liked was Karolina. She took too long to have her character developed to me. I do like how her coming out was handled, though. It was very well written, but I thought it was funny that as soon as she came out Xavin came and became a sort of Deus ex machina. I would've liked her to have more sexual tension with someone. I didn't really care who, I just wanted to see her character evolve more as a lesbian alien on Earth.

I did this for this past year. After I got my PS3 last summer, I began building up a large backlog of PS2 RPGs. Now, I'm trying to get my RPG backlog down, and I haven't bought any new games since this past summer.

However, with some awesome games coming the first of next year, I'm probably gonna have to put my backlog on hold again.

I'm still trying to power my way thru Eternal Sonata now. Hopefully I'll be done with it in the next couple of weeks.

Do all the sidequests in Chrono Trigger pop up towards the end of the game?

Cool, good to know. I didn't want to miss a bunch of crap like I usually do in RPGs. :)

It's hard to miss most of them, because there's a guy who tells you what quests are left once you get to a point where you can either finish the game or do the sidequests.

ok, so I need a break from Dragon Age, and am thinking of jumping into Persona 3 FES. Any tips/suggestions? IIRC, there's some sort of "time limit" or schedule or something, and I don't want to fuck myself over.

If you want to do all the S link correctly you need to use a guide

P3 is one of the few games I highly recomend a guide for. There's not much advise in terms of missable things. Everything's about scheduling your time and doing what you think is more important. But even with the guide it's difficult to complete all the S-Links. By the end of the game I still had 5 I couldn't finish.

Heh, My plan was to buy few new games last year so I could take care of my PS2 and DS backlog... didn't workout so well. And it look like I'll be adding some games to my backlog this year as well. White Knight, Star Ocean 4(PS3) and Mass Effect 2 comes out within 2 months of each other.

Thats what you get for playing Blue Dragon.

I got stuck for a while at this same part, because I equipped my rogue with a bow for some reason. I had to re-load a previous save to make sure she was outfitted correctly.
The sloth demon part right before that was the worst though. The damn thing had so many forms that by the time it reached the final form, half my party was dead because Wynne had no mana left to heal. A change of tactics and some resolve eventually brought me victory, but that boss battle was tough as fuck.

Wow, I completely forgot about this game. Didn't it get announced years ago?

Probably, all I know is that it comes out in Feb(I think).

Yeah, I have the P3 guide, but since i doesn't cover the changes in FES, it's fairly useless. Guess it's time to bust out the "set a laptop with a gamefaqs guide next to me while playing" strategy...

Does everything you do take "time" in game. I see the S-Link guide says to do things fairly specifically, but never mentions Tartarus, going to shops, etc. Maybe it'll all make sense once I start playing.

Wow, that's great. Now I won't need to print something out to check them off.

Going to shops to buy items doesn't take up time, but going to Tartarus, trying to increase attributes and spending time with S.Links.
