The RPG thread has reached level 2!
It's good. Lots of typical JRPG silliness but the characters and setting are intriguing, and it has one of the best endings ever IMO-- multiple endings actually, set up in a really satisfying and thought-provoking way. It ties directly into the first game's story so I'd recommend at least reading the Wikipedia entry to familiarize yourself with the characters.
I played this years ago but don't remember the ending -
spoil me please?
Eternal Sonata's story left me borderline retarded.

How's Shadow Hearts: Covenet's story? I got this a few days ago but have yet to pop it in. I played SH3 years ago which I liked but always hear people say SH2 is way better.
SH3 doesn't even compare to the second game. SH2 is one of my favorite RPGs of all time.
SH3 doesn't even compare to the second game. SH2 is one of my favorite RPGs of all time.
But Gameplay-wise it plays pretty much the same, right?

I don't see why SH3 gets all the hate it does. It's largely the equal of (and functionally similar to) Covenant in gameplay, tone, story and characterization. Hell, if anything it's more engaging at certain points since you don't have to put up with the Mutant Apes segments or tow around fucking Kurando.

I'll quote this from Wikipedia since I'm the one who wrote this part of the entry. :)

Like its predecessor, Covenant has two endings, depending on a choice made by the player earlier in the game. In the "bad" ending, Yuri's personality and memories are erased by the Mistletoe's curse, and he lives out the rest of his life in Wales under the care of Roger Bacon. In the "good" ending, Yuri is killed before succumbing to the curse. He retains his personality, and is escorted into the afterlife by his true love Alice. (It is also implied that Yuri may be projected back in time to the beginning of the first Shadow Hearts and given a chance to prevent Alice's death, but this is open to interpretation.) In both endings, Karin travels back in time to 1887 and meets Yuri's father Ben Hyuga. It is hinted that Anne, Yuri's mother, is actually Karin.

What I love about this is that the game essentially breaks the fourth wall to ask the player to judge Yuri's behavior (but in a way that is not obvious except in retrospect), and gives Yuri whichever fate the player thinks he deserves. So really, though one is considered good and one is considered bad, both endings are the "good ending" because either one could reflect your opinion about Yuri.

Personally I chose that Yuri had gone too far trying to bring Alice back to life, so I got the "bad" personality-wipe ending.

I guess people enjoyed the "darker" story of SH: Covenant more. SH3 was a little goofy. I liked it, but I can see how fans might be turned off when compared to the first two.

The gameplay was the same but the story can't even compare. SH3's was frivolous and boring. Not to mention the huge plot holes at times.

^Lost Odyssey
Dragon Age Origins (RPG of the Year, One of my fav game this year)
Tales of Vesperia (Best in series)
FallOut 3
Borderlands

But yes I do miss the Golden Age of RPG's, the PSX days

I'd have to say that Infinite Undiscovery was no slouch either. It did as much right as it did wrong-- an Infinite Undiscovery 2 that built on the strong points and fixed the problems could be an absolute beast of a game.

wow, never played a Lufia game before, but that trailor looks cool. The graphics engines SE makes for DS never cease to amaze me. Is there confirmation of a port? (not too worried, since I think most SE games have come over, right? even TWEWY thank god!)

Edit: and yeah, LO was fucking amazing, Dragon Age is the next best thing to BGIII, and Borderlands is what Hellgate tried and failed to be. But I agree, this console gen has been 4 years running now, and we only have a handful of good RPGs, nothing like the PSX/PS2 days. I wonder if rising development costs/increased voice acting has slowed development.

This generation of RPGs really does suck. Valkyria and Vesperia are the only great ones. Lost Odyssey had great gameplay but the characters weren't developed at all, save Kaim "the pain of a thousand years" Argonar. I was watching the ending and realized I didn't care about any of the characters.

Infinite Undiscovery was pretty good - I would consider pre-ordering a sequel.

I've actually been flirting with the idea of trying to enter the console market with a PS1-like console of my own. No online service, no system updates, no Twitter integration, no PS Home, no media center capabilities. I miss the golden age of RPGs pretty badly.

Yeah, I don't even have real hopes that FFXIII will be that great.

This console generation, the RPGs have really fallen in quality. I blame the whole idea of making RPGs "appeal to a wider audience" and the whole "casual gaming" revolution.

Yeah, I have a DS. Don't have a PSP yet but I have 10 games for it. I am glad they are releasing these games, but why must it be on handhelds? Wouldn't it make more sense to release it on PS2? I suspect everyone who buys DS RPGs owns a PS2, but not everyone who owns a PS2 owns a DS.

At least the Tales studio seems to be going strong. I'm playing Abyss right now and it's excellent.

I blame the whole "Let's make the most cinematic movie ever instead of a game" revolution.

And MMOs.
Dammit, Squeenix has ruined my interest in the new Lufia (Estpolis) DS game. I mean, it looks interesting, but it don't look like any Lufia game I've ever played. Also, no turn-based combat. I miss games with turn-based combat. And I miss RPGs where the damn main character didn't have spikey hair. fuck you Squeenix.

omg this game looks AWESOME!

but Ive never played Lufia before... but it looks awesome!!

I think the PS2 managed to have a large amount of quality RPGs, or maybe it was just the companies. I'm thinking of the Final Fantasies, Kingdom Heart, Tales of, Wild Arms, but there were also a ton of smaller, little known RPGs such as the Summoner series that were quality RPGs as well.

FFXIII on PS3 has lossless audio (I have no idea what that means), has 1080p cutscenes and no install. Now let's see what they do with the Western version.
Summoner was the only RPG when PS2 launched, I thought it was supposed to be garbage though.
What about Orphan?
FFXIII on PS3 has lossless audio (I have no idea what that means), has 1080p cutscenes and no install.
It means the compression algorithm used for the audio doesn't remove any of the sound. A lossy format (e.g. MP3) does.
What about Orphan?
Orphen? ;)

Picked up Tales of Vesperia for $15 on Amazon, which seems like a DAMN good deal. As soon as I'm done with Dragon Age, it's gettin' the first-class treatment.
Summoner was the only RPG when PS2 launched, I thought it was supposed to be garbage though.
I thought it was fairly good. Not on the scale of the big name RPGs, but it was fun to say the least. Now Orphen on the other hand...;)

Does anyone here plan on getting the 360 version of FFXIII? I'm looking forward to those side-by-side comparison videos they always do for high-profile multi-platform titles like this one.

Finished up all the side-quests I'm gonna do in FFXII. There are a few more I could do, but I'd rather just get it over with and move on. There was a time long ago when I was anal about 100-percenting RPGs, but not anymore.

They haven't shown the 360 version since E3. Every piece of footage/screens have all been the from the PS3 version (even the stuff on XBLM is PS3 footage, but with generic button layouts).

If you only have a 360 that's fine, get it on 360. But I don't predict a lot of multiplatform owners getting FFXIII on 360.
Orphen? ;)
Yeah, but it's not very good. I remember waiting in line at the launch of the PS2 and heard a girl next to me say "I can't imagine why anyone would buy a PS2 and not get Orphen." I remember thinking, WTF is Orphen?

Not to dredge up an old discussion, but can you name any RPGs besides Suikoden Tierkreis that do this? Almost all RPGs these days have either gotten more complex, more niche, or play exactly the same as the last gen.

I plan on getting FFXIII on PS3, but you just know that Microsoft is going to have some exclusive DLC, or pre-order bonus, or something to draw people away from the better version.

I'll definitely get it for the PS3.

Oh hell yes. I registered for this a few days ago before they revealed what it would be. I was hoping for a cool avatar item.

It's funny talking about Orphen because I have it and play it occasionally. It was alright for 2.99.
No, something that will require purchase of the game.
Right, but it is just an example.

Dragon's Age is so fucking good.

My one complaint is that my Dwarven Noble Warrior character looks almost exactly like his second. It was very distracting at first.

that is all
This generation has sucked ass for RPGs. Only Lost Odyssey gets a pass.
You're nuts. Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Oblivion and now Dragon Age are all awesome.
But I don't predict a lot of multiplatform owners getting FFXIII on 360.
Barring some sort of revelation that the 360 version is way worse than the PS3 version, I'll probably get it on 360. I'm trying to give TMK a heart attack.

Huh? I'm not sure what you mean by that.

He might just be talking about JRPGs. But even then he would be nuts sine ToV was a good game.

Well, as a Dwarf Noble Warrior, you spend some of the opening parts of your game going everywhere with a servant/bodyguard dwarf. He has red hair and a red beard. My character has the exact same colored hair and beard. Same skin color as well. It wouldn't have been an issue at all if I hadn't been trying to recreate Bruenor from those Drizzt books as my character :p

There has been one truly great JRPG this generation. If you look to the DS you'll find way more, but around here people prefer home consoles (myself included).
