I watched the whole press conference. The game does sound really cool, but they made it seem like it's definitely 2-3 years off.

It also sounds like the whole team of them are huge Trekkies though. They were talking a lot about stuff they've taken out of the novels.

I remembered reading about this around 2005 or so while I was playing SWG. Thought to myself based on the screenshots at the time, the game will be out in 2007. Fast forward to 2008 and this game has had some development problems and some people thought it was going to be canned. Good to know they are really going full steam ahead and making this game come true. I will be subscribing to this game once it hits. Yes another 2 or 3 years, but lets hope they make it right instead of that crap called SWG.

Ya, they said in that they basically had to scrap everything from the original project (whoever was doing it) because "there was nothing work keeping."

The trailer certainly looks great. They also said they're not going to have a level system, but you would level up your bridge crew (like an RPG), and your character would have a specialty first (the example was that Janeway was a science officer and then became a command officer second, or Troi and the command tests they also mentioned), which may affect your ships and what you can do like classes.

It's set 30 years after Nemesis.

What happened with SWG anyway? I remember that's all i heard about when it came out. This looks pretty cool, i guess the battles would be land and space based both.

It was pretty decent for a while if I recall (I didn't play it), and then after a few years they decided to relaunch it with a completely different class structure to make it more mainstream, and ended up losing nearly all their long-time players.
Which timeline is it set in?
The wiki says 20 years after Nemesis in the early 25th century.

It was pretty decent until they released that stupid Combat Upgrade and the New Gaming Experience or whatever around mid 2005. Then everything went to hell. It was fun to have a character who could heal/buff and do kick ass kung fu (TKA), but the changes made it so you couldn't be that anymore. The whole jedi thing was a mess too and when they changed it so you could start as a jedi in training FROM THE START, suddenly everyone was a jedi :(

this. I remembered I had a character on the Radiant Galaxy and things were pretty cool, but there were a few guilds on the server that try to ruin the fun for everyone.

I truely hope that the Borg does NOT become a playable race. They are way too powerful and shouldn't be in the game at all.

They said they intend for the next 2 playable races to be the Romulans and the remnants of the Dominion I believe. Likely in expansions.

Also they hope to have everyone play on 1 server, such that Borg invasions and such are universe-altering events (as in, how far do they get before the players can stop them).

Did they say how they are handling death in the game? Like your ship blows up, what happens to your crew and character?

They said it would be similar to WoW, minimal loss.

They stated that it's less realistic but "people are way beyond permadeath or major death penalties, people want to play and have fun."

I think I'm going to go ahead and start a thread for this in the PC forum, there seems to be a lot of interest just in here.

Well, 2 factions, you can play any of the Federation races (Human, Vulcan, Bajoran, Ferangi, etc) and you will be able to create a custom race within the faction (not sure if this applies to Klingons as well).

Ah i see, that makes more sense. I thought you were limited to just human or klingon races. I'd think you would be if you chose the klingons though, they usually don't have many backers.

I wish I had gone when I was in Vegas this summer, but I was on a tight budget (in the wrong town, I know) and unfortunately had to work during most of it's open hours.
I went about a year after it opened. Was very cool for the time.
Surprised they shut it down, with the new movie out next year.
It was a lease issue. The old lease was up and they couldn't agree on a new one.

I wish I could have seen it. I haven't been to Vegas since they opened it. Oh well. All good things...

I had read that. Just surprising they couldn't work something out short term, to at least see if interest was rekindled after the new movie.

The bridge looks quite a bit different then I was expecting, a lot more futuristic then TOS or the TOS movies.

The crew doesn't look too bad, but it will take some time to get used to them (except for Zachary Quinto, he looks pretty much perfect as Spock).

The shot of the ship looks great, I love the little phasers.

I agree. However why are they reinventing TOS? I am still mixed about this movie but it's trek, it has special effects, and oh yea, short skirts! :p

btw- anyone notice they MOVED voyager to 1am!!! so Voy/DS9 is now at 1am/2am!!! argh

I saw City on the Edge of Forever in its entirety for the first time this morning. I had alwasy missed some of it before. Great episode.

The new Uhura is so hot.

I think it's a great idea to redo the bridge/ship/technology to be a more realistic prediction of the future. I mean all of the "future technology" from TOS looks retarded now and it's only been 40 years.

Like, have a character make an offhand reference to Starfleet's "retro design phase" in the late 23rd century, or something like that.

I'm wondering the same thing. Although they might be better off using this movie as a complete reboot of the entire Trek universe. Same characters but different canon. I mean do we honestly want to get to a point in time where the great James T. Kirk dies in a freaking bridge collapse??? Just awful.

I think they move away from canon if there's a sequel, but I think they have to be afraid of breaking canon for the first film and losing the diehard audience, which is a pretty substantial base.
lol seriously could you imagine the hardcore nerd rioting that would occur if they re-wrote Star Trek?
Honestly, I think they're better off if they do.

With each new iteration of Star Trek, it becomes increasingly difficult to fit things with what came before, find something new to say, and make sure it all makes sense.

The last two series (Voyager and Enterprise) were arguably worse off because of all of the temporal/spatial nonsense, which includes trying to sandwich in invasions, timelines, aliens, and histories into periods of time and areas of space where they make no sense whatsoever. It encourages playing games with the rules, and then wrapping it all up with a reset button or deus ex machina because it all has to fit, somehow.

With a new start, they can rewrite all the rules that have been making Star Trek suck. If it works, great. If not, well, it can't be any worse a failed experiment than the last two.

The hardcore nerds are going to whine and complain no matter what. Might as well make something good.

Even though some of the time-travel episodes were some of my favorites, if they can reboot the series and not do that, I'd approve.

I'm 100% in support of rewriting the movie arc of the original cast.

Voyager was the worse of all the series. It had the potential to be something good, but turned out to be a piece of shit after 7 of 9 came onboard. I liked Enterprise, until season 3.

Rick Berman fucked Trek and paramount should have bought out his contract before Enterprise got really fucked over.

Trek's downfall began with Berman and Paramount didn't do shit about it, now because of him they have to reinvent the wheel to bring in a new generation of viewers.

What's next? They going to reinvent the Next Generation?

anyways.

They should just reboot Star Trek or make all future Star Trek media take place in a parallel universe which is more realistic to our own time. They need to get back to the root of the essence of Star Trek.

I agree Voyager was the worst, but only because of Janeway--couldn't stand that bitch. It got BETTER after 7 of 9 joined IMO. Berman really did mess Trek up though. I always thought when he had people like Braga to bounce things off of he was ok.

7 of 9's only role was to bring in more male viewers period. After season 3 it was the Jayneway, Doctor , Seven Show. I really hoped there would be more character development with Chacotey (sp?), and Kim but they got screwed over. Kim espically. Didn't Braga die a few years back?
