Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
The Dead Space pack is now $13.59.
I am glad that they fixed it. It is tempting but I really only want Dead Space 2 and that is only 50% off by itself. I will have to think about it.

I've never bought from steam before (online, have bought retail disk), but i'll check with a friend and maybe go for terraria as my first game from them. Looks like a lotta fun for $5

Alright I'm thinking about Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines, Rock of Ages, and Penumbra Black Plague. I already own Penumbra: Overture but never played it. Not sure if I should wait for a cheaper Rock of Ages though. Any thoughts on these 3 games?

Looking at Ghost Master for $1.24. When I first saw it on Steam, it reminded me of an old Genesis game, Haunting Starring Polterguy. I see this has a Meta score of 81, not bad. Anyone have any experience with it?
To those that have experienced a Halloween sale, does steam do daily specials for this sale(like the summer sale)?
As far as I can recall from last year, no, I don't believe that they did. I think they made something free to play for the weekend, though. Killing Floor, maybe?
Hosting a Left 4 Dead 2 Pack, Paypal in advance, though.
So zetta wrong thread for this.
To those that have experienced a Halloween sale, does steam do daily specials for this sale(like the summer sale)?
I don't believe so. I'm pretty sure it's just a group of titles discounted. Honestly, I think this year is better than last year. I don't recall this many titles on sale last year.

Basically this Halloween sale is the weekend deal. There will still be normal dailies but no Halloween special dailies.

I also bought that Overlord pack. Looks like fun.
Does Bioshock run poorly or not? Can someone who owns Bioshock clear this up for me?
Bioshock runs well on my current system.

Core i5 2500K
Radeon HD6850

It did have some hiccups on my previous system which wasn't really meant for games. But it was still quite playable.

AMD Athlon X2 3.1 Ghz
Nvidia Quadro FX 580
Ignore all of the games (and consequently the reviews) except for Painkiller:Black. The publisher hijacked the series from the original developer and released, basically, a bunch of mods disguised as new games of the same quality. The original is a brilliant old school first person shooter.

Going from memory here... doesn't it try to install several sound extensions? IIRC, I removed them and the game ran fine.
I had zero problems with Bioshock 1, but I had finished Bioshock 2 by the time I noticed the Little Sisters weren't speaking. I thought it was a design decision.
I have a feeling Dragon Age 2 will be added back to Steam but as a bundle with all the DLC sometime in the future once they sort their issues out.
I dunno if that's gonna happen.
We still haven't seen a Mass Effect 2: Complete Pack [ME2 + ALL DLC] on the PC.

I was about to buy the Left 4 Dead bundle, but then someone said that 2 has most of the content from 1 already in it? Can someone tell me if there's any point in buying both games? I watched the Gametrailers reviews for each and they both look awesome. I enjoy slaughtering zombies. I'll probably play in single player most of the time.

I was told that L4D2 has the original's maps, and characters, better effects and I guess there's more people online to play with. Left 4 Dead is all about the multiplayer, anyway.

Not everything (maps) has been ported from 1 to 2 yet, but the core maps and characters have been. There's nothing really lost in terms of story if you buy 2 and not 1.

The multiplayer versus community is much broader in terms of skill level in 2 than 1, so if you get discouraged by a steep learning curve, pro players stomping you, or become easily frustrated by incompetent pub teammates, avoid 1.

Well the only good thing is, it seems more mature elite players play L4D1, while L4D2 has more popularity. It is a different game in ways since it has different Special Infected and the feeling is different in both games, even the L4D1 levels has been ported. I think myself it is worth the extra 3 something dollars just to have both experiences. If not then L4D2 will do you fine, but for me the whole experience is both games. If I were you, I'll start L4D1 first and get experience the levels and start from there, then if you play L4D2 using the newly ported L4D1 levels you can spot differences and experience more new Special Infected.

It's not a story driven series. I haven't played it in awhile but if I remember correctly all or most of the DLC is shared and at least one of the four original campaigns is available in L4D2. I say get the second one and if you really want more L4D get the first one when it's on sale again in a couple of months. It's a Valve game, there's no danger that it won't.

Thanks, good advice. I think considering the small cost to get both I'm going to go for the bundle. I'm pretty intimidated by online multiplayer and usually don't even try it, so I'm mostly expecting to play these games solo.

It would be 5 dollars for each one if you get the bundle or are part of a L4D1/L4D2 4-pack.

I was contemplating getting the bundle but I just grabbed the L4D2 4-pack. I think the 2nd is enough to mess around with friends with. Dont really want to drop the other $5.

When playing Nation Red with a controller, does it work as a twin stick shooter like you push the right stick to shoot in that direction? Anyone know?

Downloading the demo, about to find out.

I liked ghost master, its sims haunting to be honest, you plant ghosts and freak sims out of their house...lol

I tried the demo and, yes, that's how it works. I used a 360 controller BTW.

yeah, but the most recent ME2 DLC is only a few months old. i'd guess we see an ME2 "complete/GOTY/ultimate (etc)" version a few months before ME3 drops.

Definitely in for Painkiller: Black at $2.50. Been waiting since last year for that price point. Currently debating Amnesia and STALKER: CoP, though I'd love for those to hit $2.50 as well during the Black Friday/Holiday sale.

I grabbed the Left 4 Dead pack and the Stalker Pack. I've been hoping for a sale for a while. I'm really excited to finally play Stalker!!

Painkiller Black is the only Painkiller you need but I would argue you don't need ANY Painkiller. I rag on Serious Sam a bit but PK makes SS look like a masterpiece.

That said, for the price, the ragdolls and a couple of the weapons in PK are supremely satisfying so do about six levels and then call it a game. You will most definitely get your $2.50's worth. Dig in.

Note: The Sherlock Holmes games come very well reviewed, oddly enough.

I like Silent Hill Homecoming but I will admit that is probably because I have crummy taste. That said, Konami's unwillingness to drop it to a real price is an insult to everyone involved. You could find copies of the console versions discarded on the sidewalk, ignored. There's no sense in charging over $5 sale price for it. Get with it, guys.

Ghostbusters has my recommendation now as well. Spent a few hours playing the single player and didn't want to stop. It's obvious why it didn't win game of the year but it's Well worth the asking price and a great roller coaster movie game.

Are the Sherlock Holmes games point and click? Not a fan of that genre.
Also which of the games do you think are more likely to be part of a pack come December? My backlog can probably carry me 'till then.

Aside from Crash Course, what L4D1 map hasn't been ported from 1 to 2? Pretty much all of the L4D1 content is in L4D2 now.

The Last Stand (lighthouse survival map) is probably the only other thing. I haven't played 1 in ages, but I think they changed the scoring system or display as well. Not much, but if the OP is gonna stick to single player then yeah he should get both. Also worth getting a few of the quality mods @l4dmaps.com.
Has anyone played Zombie Pirates? I've read it is like Plants vs Zombies and I can't get my wife off that game some weeks. She really needs a new game to play and if Zombie Pirates is like PvZ, that is a must buy for me.

For me, are any of the following worth buying:
Dead Horde
Dark Fall: Lost Souls
Scratches: Directors Cut
Dracula: Origin
Any opinions on any of these games?

The game does have some similarities to Plants Vs Zombies and is a decent game but it is not as good as PvZ. Also the game has a lot more micromanagement and the difficulty is a little higher. I would say it is worth a shot.

I bought Nation Red on hype alone during the summer sale and man, that game is just awful. I played with a friend and we were both incredibly disappointed. It has an awful and limited soundtrack, the gameplay is incredibly basic with no level progression, it's basically just an arena which is a really uninteresting design choice for this type of game, the weapons are boring given the limited graphics. and the soundtrack is dire. I have no idea why that game is popular. I wouldn't recommend it at all.

It's probably worth watching the WTF Is Nation Red video to know what it is before buying. I'm sorry you bought into hype and didn't like it. I enjoy NR a lot but I admit it isn't a spectacular game. It just grabs me with what it does that works.

Wow, I just watched that WTF for Nation Red. This is Crimsonland: Source, essentially. It's even right there in the name. Definitely buying this one.

So far I've only bitten on Woody Two-Legs: Attack of the Pirate Zombies as it was 87p and I felt the urge to buy something as soon as the sale went live.

Currently on the fence about Ghostbusters, the Overlord pack, and Nation Red. I expect I'll pull the trigger on one, if not all three, once either a) somebody posts a glowing review or b) I get drunk and forget what money is. Probably b).

Seen a few people asking about Bioshock. If you're one of the few people yet to play this game, please seriously consider doing so. It's moody, atmospheric, and has a great storyline with a couple of WTF? moments in it. It's the only game I've played on console and re-played on PC. Gave me goosebumps on regular occasions, Rapture is just one of those gaming environments that has to be experienced rather than just seen.

Not sold on the sequel, mind. I've played bits but it just doesn't feel the same.

Picked up $20 worth of games yesterday, mostly adventure games. But I'm trying to decide if I want Terraria or SPAZ first. I will eventually get them both but only want to buy one now. A little disappointed that SPAZ didn't get a bigger discount.

Any thoughts on which way I should go on this one?

I am a big fan of adventure games..I am pretty sure I am going to get the Scratches Director's Cut special..is there anything else on special that is worth grabbing? Are the Sherlock Holmes games worthwhile?

Waiting on better deals for SPAZ and Rock of Ages. At least 50% off of each would seal it for me.

Terraria is entirely what you make of it.

I bought it at release after being nagged by a mate, and I didn't like it at all. It was open-ended, no real structure, it just gave you a big world and said "do something, what you looking at me for?". I didn't like that. I've been conditioned to like questing and so on, it gives me direction :) Left it alone, didn't play for a couple of months.

Then after a while, I saw a few vids and saw all the cool higher-level armour sets and I thought "I'd quite like that actually". So I played it solid for four whole evenings, building my castle, farming ore to get copper/iron/silver/gold armour, building platforms to take on the bosses... everything.

I got so far as killing each boss at least once, got a couple of armour sets, then the urge to farm everything disappeared again. I've barely touched it since.

At 30 hours playtime, it's hard to say I've not had value with it, but if you're the kind of person who likes some kind of direction then you may have to set yourself a goal beforehand. If you want to make yourself a shiny gold tower with shiny chandeliers and shiny, erm, skulls(?) then the world is your oyster. Just don't forget to lock the door.

p.s. It's worth noting that there's a pretty big content patch (1.1 I believe) due out in the next month or two.

So I played it solid for four whole evenings, building my castle, farming ore to get copper/iron/silver/gold armour, building platforms to take on the bosses... everything.

Excellent summary. I feel the same. The game has a ton of value, you just have to know what you are getting into beforehand and want that type of experience. If you don't, even at $5, you will be wasting your money.

Perfect, thank you! I've watched a few vids this morning and it definitely looks cool, but I am the type that likes having quests, a story, goals to meet, and ultimately an end.

I think I'll skip it for now and if it ever gets around the ~$2 range I might nab it up to toy around with.

Now I just have to decide if SPAZ is worth the price tag now, or hope for a better sale around the Holidays...

I think Flowette's summary is pretty apt. I bought the four-pack when it was mega-cheap during the Summer Sale (before the price hike), and while my those of us that got the game had fun for maybe 5 hours or so, we all quickly dropped the game. Storylines and quests are what push me in a game. I've never been a sandbox player, so Terraria quickly lost my interest.
