Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Loved limbo, hated braid ... you want to talk about a game that attracts arrogant indie blowhards, go find those people that raved about Braid like it was the second coming of Indie development.

skyrim discounted @ below 45$, i'm in.
already have the CE for ps3...
i'm converting my console game collection to steam collection, so this holiday sale might hurt a lot. hopefully, i can sell the console versions fairly priced.
I grabbed Limbo for the same price during the Black Friday sale. It's totally alright.

I really, really enjoyed the first hour or so, but it really starts to wear out its welcome after a while. What starts as a really fun, atmospheric puzzle platformer quickly becomes a really boring, self-indulgent puzzle platformer.

I know a lot of people complained about its short length back when it first came out, but man do I wish this game was half as long as it is.
This is exactly how I fell about Limbo...

Anyone else notice alot of games updating today? Had updates for Rock of ages, Sanctum, Terreria. I assume there prepping for the winter sale

I noticed that. Anomaly: Warzone Earth and Orcs Must Die just updated as well.

There are patch notes for Rock of Ages and Terraria and Sanctum has some free Christmas DLC.

What happens if you try to redeem a code for a game you already own? Just trying to figure out if some codes from past indie bundles are still good for me to gift to friends.

Psychonauts is updating for me now. Updates everywhere!

If I hadn't already played and beat LIMBO on 360, I'd be all over this deal. $2.50 is a great deal, but I'll be holding out unless it somehow pops up in an indie bundle eventually.

Looks like Terraria got a huge update recently. It looks even better now with all the nice coloured lightning and such. And it looks like they've added quite a lot of content like new bosses, biomes, items, etc.

I might not need this winter sale after all :p lol *goes back to playing Terraria*

Bought Limbo, it looks like it is my type of indie game. I won't be able to play it until after my last final exam is over tomorrow though; resisting is hard.

Hm...maybe I'll give the game another shot. It's not really my kind of thing, but I wouldn't mind squeezing a few more hours out of it.

Yeah they added a lot of stuff to the game. It's just I don't think I can go back to it, the game to be felt like a grindfest and I wasn't getting enough enjoyment out of the grinding, but it's ymmv because other people love it.
Does the winter sale have a set date?
No, but there have been hints as to it starting the 19th, which is next Monday.

I have no idea what ymmv means :p

Anyways I kind of thought about it the same way as you. At first it was fun but I got to the good stuff (meteor armor and such) pretty fast, beat the bosses and I got annoyed of walking around the huge map looking for more to do. I only now just realised it might not have been a smart idea to start on a large map xD

Now with all the new content I think I'm going to start a new small map so I won't spend hours finding new biomes and/or making houses so I don't have to walk for ages when I die.

I want to like Terraria. I picked it up several months ago during a sale and gave it a whirl. I don't remember why, but I never really went back to it, despite thinking it could be fun.

I just booted it up and played for about 15 minutes. I started with a character and was cheerfully mining some resources when it turned night and zombies attack. I have no real way of fending them off, so I spend the next 15 minutes just trying to run. Eventually, I run into more and they kill me.

I don't mind there being threats in the game, as it provides a reason for creating shelter, weapons and such. But right off the bat, fighting zombies that hit me for 20 pts or so of damage, while I can do 1 damage to them with my starter sword? Where is the fun in this? I just want to at least have a chance to gather wood and ore and figure out what I can do with it (still haven't even had a chance to try to build or do anything with it yet) without being chased out of my base of operations by zombies.

So to those that have played the game, what does one do? I probably am messing up, I just don't know/see how yet.

just tried Super Meat Boy for the first time. Yeah so it's kinda what I expected. A game made by the devil forcing you to make super precise jumps. It's not bad although either I really suck or the controls are kinda wonky when grabbing onto walls sometimes.

I feel the controls are perfect, the game does require practice on some levels though.

The game has some seriously solid controls, they just take getting used to. The floaty mechanics are annoying at first, but I grew to love them.

It really depends; are you playing with a controller or keyboard? The keyboard controls are a bit janky.

While I never got far enough to unlock any additional characters in Meat Boy, it probably makes things easier once you do. You can beat any level with Meat Boy himself, but some dastardly ones appear to be easier with other characters.

I need to go back and play as other characters..I loved Meat Boy too much to ever deviate initially.

Edit - Whoever was talking about Runespell a few days ago, I am grateful. That conversation stuck in my mind and I fired it up tonight. Good game! :D
DUDE. THE SHIP BETA. I just submitted a tip to Joystiq about this. Here's what I wrote, so everyone can see why this is so cool:

"A list has begun to circulate of what appear to be the upcoming Steam Holiday Sale games, as inferred through their value entries and changes in Steam's games database. Here is the link:

"Search for "Holiday" to find the Holiday listings.

"Of particular note is an item marked "Holiday Sale 2011 Gift The Ship Beta". (linked in the Related URL, and again here: http://dedicated.heffebaycay.fr/cdr_test/sub/12607 ) The Ship, for reference, is an ultimately dead Source multiplayer game developed by Outerlight Ltd. which as far as I know is the originator of the concept popularized by AC:B's multiplayer. Unfortunately, it was not a commercial success and Outerlight would later try it once more with Bloody Good Time before the developer folded.

"However, it appears an indie developer called Blazing Griffin acquired the rights to The Ship, and stated that they see a lot of untapped potential in what The Ship has to offer as a license and concept, and have gone on to say that they intend to expand on the license soon. The Steam listing, coupled with this acquisition, has me pretty excited for what I hope to be a game that the gaming public will find more palatable this time around because of AC:B's popularity. Here is the Blazing Griffin statement about the acquisition of The Ship's license:

"They have also been coy about what the future holds for The Ship on their forums, but no announcements about a beta for a new version of The Ship have been made.

"I hope I'm right!"

Basically, The Ship is Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood's multiplayer concept, except it was created in 2006. The Ship's rights were bought by a new dev in November of this year, and they have said as recently as this month that something new for The Ship is coming soon. The entry for The Ship Beta on the Steam list linked above is almost certainly that new thing: A multiplayer beta for a new version of The Ship. STOOOOOOKED
Your writeup is great. As an owner of both The Ship and Bloody Good Time, I'd love to see these games get a reboot. Bot play doesn't have the same tension. Maybe we can get a few games going for the CAG community.

You write "... which as far as I know is the originator of the concept popularized by AC:B's multiplayer." You may be interested to know that the original source is the live-action game Killer (a.k.a. "Assassin"), of which you can read about here and here. I recall reading somewhere that the developers of The Ship were players of this game. Yes, people really did (and do) play this game in real life. I played in high school in the 80s... a match would take about a week or two to resolve. Killing someone would involve, for example, dropping a pillow down a stairwell with the words "1,000 lb anvil" written on it, or "poisoning" their coke by taping a sticky on the bottom that says "cyanide!" when they're not looking. Great fun. The format is the same - a round-robin of contract kills. Paranoia abounds!

But your assessment that AC:B has popularized the format in the video game world is 100% accurate. I hope The Ship and BGT get some new love, because they never really broke through.

Also - you may be interested to read about a similar game that's presently being developed called Spy Party. If you like AC:B's multiplayer mode, you'll probably enjoy this. One player is a spy at a socialite party, and he's trying to blend in with all the bots... walking, talking, eating. The other player is a sniper outside trying to figure out which character at the party is the spy -- the other human player. The round ends when the sniper chooses someone to kill, then the players switch sides. I'm following the developer on Facebook; it's interesting to watch the development of a true indie game.

Cheers...

I agree with the second part. Braid tried to do too much and the douches hopped aboard. The game's still very good and entertaining, but it's achieved in a fundamentally different manner than Limbo.

Dude Assassins sounds awesome! I've been excied for Spy Party ever since I heard about it, and there is another XBLA local multiplayer game coming out that is similar, called Hidden in Plain Sight. Here's a link: http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/02/the-joystiq-indie-pitch-hidden-in-plain-sight/

Glad to see another enthusiast! Don't think anyone will report on this, but the beta is coming in a week so who cares!

Greg Rice from Double Fine just tweeted, "Guys, if you are a Psychonauts fan and haven't played since Xbox, pick it up on Steam next week. It's about to be suuuuuper cheap!!"

Good news. I'm betting it hits $2 again.

I really liked The Ship. ACB's MP just doesn't come close. Problem with The Ship was that if you lost your rhythm or had a couple of bad beats it got non-fun very fast. Plus those jail times were excruciating. And the weapon spawns were ridiculous. And the bounties for rare weapons were just game-breakers. And the maps ranged from fun to ridiculous. And once everyone got good at it there was no sense in trying to hide yourself. Kinda like SC:CT MP. The tension is there up until you've got it all down, then it just sorta becomes rote... Okay that's a lot of problems but still fun

Bloody Good Time tried to speed things up and balance but was just a mess.

Psychonauts was decent fun but I never ever want to play it again. And no, I'm not in favor of a de facto donation to Double Fine either. They can wait with EA in line for my money when they are ready to present product I desire.

Seriously though, how could they make the Meat Circus easier? I had next to no trouble with it. If they quadrupled the animation speed in Lungfishopolis, I might be willing to consider the purchase... maybe.
While I never got far enough to unlock any additional characters in Meat Boy, it probably makes things easier once you do. You can beat any level with Meat Boy himself, but some dastardly ones appear to be easier with other characters.
Actually, that's a cool thing about this game. You unlock the extra characters, but Meat Boy doesn't become obsolete by any means. (Well, with the exception of The Kid or the Meat Ninja some would argue. ;P ) In the end, the bonus characters are rather situational for particular bandages. Meanwhile Meat Boy remains your most solid go-to character for plowing through levels. Well, this was the case for me anyway. =)

Valve Gift Grab 2011 – Tf2
Collect three gifts dropped by opponents.

Maybe a sale similar to the summer camp one with themed achievements? It's like I'm 7 all over again waiting for the day before xmas.

Looks like DoD:S and CS:S also got these Gift Bag 2011 achievements.

I had a reverse christmas experience. While I was excited, I always knew where my parents kept the presents... I always spoiled the surprise. But now that I am in college, I can't find the presents (don't live at home) but I also have no idea what the hell random present I am getting because unlike when I was 7 I don't make a list anymore.

Also, I am amazed they remembered DoD:S exists enough to add something to it. This has been what? The first official content added to the game in about... 2 years?

There's been a good 50-60 games with new achievements the past few weeks, so yes, a meta event like the summer camp is coming.

I always thought thay they should ve charge fo rthe bundle. At least a dollar. But the site is bugged as hell as I got more keys in my mail than I should... wth... nevermind

Only game I want from that bundle is Serious Sam sadly. If the other games were Steamable I'd grab it just cause and toss $10 at it. But since only one is, I don't want to pay the min and rather just pass overall heh.

Today's deal is Magicka at $2.50 ... again.

I feel between the multiple times Steam has had it on sale and Amazon and I think a few other places as well in just the past month or so, it is like the internet is trying to force feed me this game.
Sanctum has a free Christmas DLC right now, for those of you who own it.

Presumably, it's part of the upcoming event: http://steamtreasurehunt.wikia.com/wiki/Winter_Objectives
It's a hefty one too, it says 1300 mb on my list. So did Dungeon Defenders.

Yeah, I am tired of Magicka being on sale. It's like Borderlands where it's on sale every week. Give us a new game, throw us a bone.
