We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Opposing Force CD-keys cannot be registered through Steam. Opposing Force was included in a retail Half-Life package. The Half-Life CD-key included in the package will unlock all of the games in that package, including Opposing Force.

The Psychonauts achievements looks very time consuming. Apparently it takes about 2 hours from the start of the game to get it. Guess I'm skipping that. Thinking about doing the Spiral Knights one if it doesn't take long.
 
Picked up Psychonauts. Never played it and I've always wanted to pick it up for cheap. Somewhat disappointed that Witcher 2 didn't go below $20.

Took me about 15 minutes to get the Spiral one.

Though, this objectives thing is fucked up. I've done two objectives now and only gotten the free gift from yesterday. I didn't mind the first steam sale having broken stuff, but this is what, the third or fourth year in a row of multiple sales a year? They should have this down pat by now.

If you havent played it, it is worthwhile a great game all around. It holds up well.
 
Ok that Dungeons of Dreadmore cheevo isn't showing up as completed in the holiday page yet I completed it. Anyone know if it's just steam fucking up? I want my free shit.

Also just did the holiday cheevo for And Yet It Moves. If I have to play that game ever again, it will be too soon. I really really hate that game now.

i expect problems so it doesn't bother me as much but the introduction of an entirely new inventory system right before a big sale? rookie mistake.
 
There is a fix if your inventory is still borked or if your gifts aren't showing up. Load up Team Fortress 2, open your backpack and move some items around. Then back out and quit the game. Reload the steam client and your inventory should be working proper and you will have the correct amount of gifts. Read this fix on the steam forums last night (don't have the post open anymore or I would link it) and it worked for me.

Congratulations!!! You own another copy of AYIM if you bought the Humble Indie Bundle 4. Enjoy and best wishes!! :p I think the only games i have had more copies of than AYIM is World of Good and Machinarium. Although Frozen Synapse is getting close.
 
Was going to ask about the objective for SK not showing as completed, but it looks like a lot of people are experiencing the same, so I'll sit tight and wait for Valve to fix it.

Strange that this would happen on the second day. I wonder if it's a side effect of the fix for coal not showing up before.

Oh I have played it. Amazing game. I played it first on PS2 as a rental then bought it on original xbox. Then just recently again on Steam. I don't mind paying twice for it as double fine earns every penny. I just haven't played it on Steam yet. I'd rather play Skyrim today than spending all kinds of time on getting achievements. The easy quick ones I'll do though.
 
Spiral knights achievement just registered on the gifts page and I got it over an hour ago. So the system is probably just struggling to catch up.
 
my inventory finally sort of works... 2 pieces of coal and a 33% off valve coupon showed up from yesterday's achievement, but the spiral knights chevo hasn't unlocked for me on the gift pile page yet. hurm.

edit: spiral knights chevo popped. coal count up to 3.
 
Kinda dumb to ask, but how exactly do you apply the 33% off valve coupon to a game? Is it automatic, or do I have to enter something in?

It should be automatic, but unless your coupon is a Golden one, it's not valid until Jan 2.

These special sale achievements ruin good games for a lot of people.

Developers will make the achievement really difficult, and that's someone's first impression of the game. Then they end up hating it. It should be an enticement to get someone to try your game, nothing more.

Btw, the Wii version of AYIM is actually the best one. Rotation isn't limited to right angles, and there's more levels.

Yes if you like adventure games and like any other TellTale games I'd say go for it. Most of the episodes are great. I'm holding off still because I know it will be a long time before I get to those games, my backlog is huge.
 
There's always one achievement per day that you can get without having to buy anything. In the past, it's been simply using a feature of the Steam client. Now it's playing a Free To Play game. Sneaky.

I've seen a few comments about achievements and getting games on the day those are announced and thought I'd clear this up so there's no confusion - you can get the achievements at any time during the sale (as long as they aren't specific-to-date), and thus the gift will be earned when you do. Don't feel like you've got to buy something just because it's today's achievement. It could still be a daily (I swear I think they did this once before).
 
Cool my DoD Achievement went through. Another piece of coal. If I trade 7 pieces of coal in and get a coupon I will be so sad. I'll take any game Steam. Any game!
 
All I've received to this point is 25% off coupons, which is a bummer, because odds are I'll never use those. Here's hoping that I actually get something with some of the others.
 
I did the Anomaly: Warzone Earth achievement, but it's not showing up in the gift pile. I know the objectives from yesterday still get you prizes because it says so under the new objectives.
 
Just finished the Spiral Knights achievement (took 15-20 minutes) and oddly enough it registered straight away.

I got a 75% off of Sacred 2 (making it $4.99 after Jan 2nd)
(Sacred 2 isn't my cup of tea, so if anyone wants to trade it for shoot me a PM)
 
I got a sweet 33% Dungeon Siege 3 coupon and some coal. I am digging the coupons that amount to the games current discount. It almost might as well be coal considering the coupon is essentially useless.
 
There can be a lag before an achievement turns into a gift, sometimes quite a few hours.
For anyone looking at the Civ C or Mafia II dlc, it's cheaper at gamersgate right now

I wonder how many copies of Dungeons of Dredmor will be sold today considering the achievement only takes 3-10 minutes and it's only $1.24.

Yes, I got coal. 1 Coal, and a 50% Valve coupon after Jan 2. I thought it sucked, but after reading the othe crappy coupons and realizing that I never buy ANYTHING from Steam until it's 66% or 75% off, I guess coal isn't so bad after all.

I had to wait until today to get into my inventory. Man that took forever. Maybe that's why I got a coal? Dunno.
 
I keep rebuying games that I've already played... but at ridiculously low prices, I can't help myself. They'll all probably sit in my steam library and I'll never end up playing them.

Looks interesting and I never would have known about it had you not mentioned it.

I also love that they made an old Metroid style prequel and it's 99 cents now.

Seems like there's a lot of good deals that might be flying under the radar.

Oh shoot, didn't notice this one until just now, but its 8-bit counterpart Dark Void Zero is only 99c. I've heard good things, but I will personally be passing on it.

The coupons are odd in that this is the season of giving but yet considering how many people are getting them for games that they already own and the fact that none of them work until after said season of giving is over anyways...so is the first-quarter of the year now the season of trading? ;)
