Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

If you liked Borderlands, certainly. The two games are very similar and I love them both.
Hmm nothing for me today.

Sherlock Holmes looks interesting - lotta goods for the $8, but adventure games tend to go unplayed here. I learned that from Sam & Max.

Payday: The Heist looks good, but I can wait for it to go lower.

The Stalker Pack is definitely nice, wish it were all combined into a triple pack tho...lol
Remember Payday has a 4 pack so it would be $7.50 per person. I think I will have to get it for that price.

Anyone have opinions on Guardians of Graxia since it has an achievement? The 55 metacritic score is making me hesitant. Does it play like Magic the Gathering?
Crap. So torn on Jurassic Park. I'm curious if I should wait for the 360 version to be $14.99 or less instead.
If you are torn, I'd say wait, because it will be cheaper eventually.

MW2 worth getting? Or Black Ops? I've always had a thing for zombie shooters. Already have L4D2, but it doesn't provide that same experience as Black Ops zombies.

Ha! I didn't eve know it was out on 360.

i'm on the fence on this one too.

I got a free copy on the PC and enjoyed it quite a bit, but I recommend waiting for a lower price. It's one of those games where I can see people who it should appeal to, in this case adventure game fans and Jurassic Park fans, being really disappointed.

I just wish the damn button prompts in non action scenes on the PS3 version were bigger. I have to squint to see them.

I would like to share with you my wonderfully positive experience from completing the Christmas achievement for Bunch of Heroes. There's so many great, great things to tell you about that I'll try and break it down into bullet points:

... erm, well at least I won't have to play it ever again. Comfortably the least rewarding game I've played this year :)

Defense Grid is definitely worth picking up especially if you like tower defense-type games. I picked it up during the summer sale & scored all the DLC for free via ticket redemption. One of the few games I've managed to finish this year.

Just picked up the newest DLC for it today since it's a daily deal.

Decisions, decisons...Alice: Madness Returns is $7.99 at Best Buy. It's $14.99 on Steam (50% off). Anyone have a crystal ball lying around to see if Alice will get a daily deal at 75% off and knock that baby down to $7.50?

Hmm, looks like I am going to be buying this Gundemonium Collection at some point. Hopefully it reaches a daily. There are achievements so I am hopeful it will.
But is it really worth it at 15? the price has been tanking pretty quick on this one.
$15 is a fair price for Rage, but I would expect it hit around the $20 mark for its permanent price come March or April.

My own 2 cents: It's a competent shooter but I found it very repetitive very quickly. Mostly fetch quests with some GTA III feeling car controls peppered between shootouts. Having put numerous hours into Fallout 3 and Borderlands, I felt like I had been there, done that already. Aside from interesting co-op that explores the lore of the world, multiplayer is mostly throwaway car racing.

A bit on the technical side, the mega-textures drove me fucking insane. Every time I moved the mouse it created about an inch of pop-in textures around every side of my 23" monitor. Since it's a shooter, you move the mouse a lot and my eyes started hurting after a few hours. Soon after the game came out Carmack said he had no plans to fix that, so I don't know if that's changed or not. Just an FYI. Sorry for the long post.

I'll forward some reviews of the board game it is based on:

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/587893/ogrecave-com-reviews-guardians-of-graxia-the-board

http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/561461/guardians-of-graxia-the-little-metal-dog-show-re

I played the demo last year and liked it enough that I bought the game. Course, I since haven't gotten to it to actually play it. Basically it is a combination of war game and CCG, so it isn't quite like Magic.

Prob only interested in Payday and maybe Grotesque Tactics. Never played Defense Grid but I don't know about getting another tower defense game.

Wouldn't recommend getting Batman: AC as it still has problems right now. Though I'll likely buy the dlc...

I just bought this the other day since the bundle is on sale for $5; wouldnt have saved all that much if it was a daily anyway I guess.

looks like just the new defense grid dlc for me today.

for gifts.
Trainz™ Simulator 12
and 50% OFF Borderlands Game of the Year for today
own it already.
Oh, and an FYI for you as well as other potential shmuppers here!
The Steam Treasure Hunt Wiki noticed some Christmas achievements for all three of the games in the Gundemonium Collection. For that reason, I'd be extremely surprised if we don't see them featured on at least one of the days. ;D
Will be picking Gundemonium Collection up as well at some point played them on psn already, really liked hitogata happa's system for one reason or another.

I doubt they've run out, its just random what you get.

Thanks! You saved me time and money with this game. Sounds like it's not even worth getting just for the accomplishment and coal/coupon/game. :(

Well, 7 objectives completed and 7 lumps of coal obtained.

I uninstalled immediately after procuring that achievement. Terrible game.

Yay more coupons for me. Is anyone else SERIOUSLY disappointed with the coupons? Every coupon I've won so far has been for a game that I already own thus it will never get used. Even if I didn't already own these games, most of the coupons won't make the games cheaper next month than they are during the sale. So seriously - what is the point of this?

Coupons stack with deals. Steam has a new deal every day as well as mid-week and weekend deals. Some games may very well be cheaper between Jan 2 and the expiration than they are now.

Lots of whiners in this thread. Maybe they won't complain so much about repeat deals in January when they have a coupon that stacks.

Gotta ask, why's this one so bad? I thought DNF was hoping to score the shit crown for this year.

The only benefit I can see is that the coupons can stack on sale prices, so if a game goes on sale again during the coupon period (Jan-Mar) you can stack the coupon on the sale price. Still crappy when you look at it from that viewpoint though because you'd need to 1) wait and not buy a game now and 2) take the gamble that a game goes on sale again during the Jan-Mar period. Quite underwhelming.

Bunch of Heroes isnt as bad as everyone says its just nothing special. It's a whole lot of been there done that.

Karma has just rewarded me with a copy of F1 2011 from another achievement. If it was from Bunch of Heroes I would've felt guilty, but it's not so I won't. I'm feeling happy so time to list the badness:

1) online play is LAGTASTIC;
2) you've ~0.001% chance of doing it solo;
3) it's really quite dull, despite looking "fun" and "cuddly" on the trailer;
4) the music is awful, generic rock-riff on repeat;
5) occasionally (never did quite figure out what set it off) it plays a SUPER-LOUD riff, just to wind you up even more :D;
6) our best survival tactic was rolling around the edge of map, not actually doing stuff like, y'know, killing aliens;
7) if you die, and your partner(s) does, it's game over;
8) if you don't die, it's a 10-sec respawn. Not bad at first, but second death is 20 secs, 3rd is 40 secs, 5th is 60 secs. I found this hilarious quote on the Steam forums about it:
Respawn times: 20, 40, 80, 160, 320, 640, 1280, 2560, 5120, 10240, 20480, 40960, 81920.

After dying for the 13.th time you have to wait (almost) AN ENTIRE DAY until you can play again. Not that anyone would really bother to wait 2560 seconds (42 minutes).
Actually, that made me laugh. Anyways, ranting continues!;
9) it feels really, really un-finished;
10) the weapons absolutely suck.

I could list a further 10 but you get the idea. Seriously, this is the kind of game you gift to people who are going to The Special Hell.

p.s. Oh good god yes, 11) YOU CAN'T HEAL ON THE ACHIEVEMENT MODE.
gamble that a game goes on sale again during the Jan-Mar period.
Well, it's steam so it's certain that whatever game you are talking about will be cheaper than it is now sometime in the next year. Whether it'll be between jan-mar I guess is a bigger question, but I think waiting is always better for steam (at least adding to a backlog on steam is usually the wrong move).
Have they run out of prizes? My last 5 achievements have yielded coal.
my last 6 have been coal i have yet to win a game or a coupon other than the one coupon i got at the start

I'm not trying to be whiny I just feel like we're beta testing the coupon functionality of Steam. I'm okay with that I suppose. In fact I think the only thing that bugs me about it is the randomness of it all. During the Summer Sale, you could trade your objective tickets in for prizes and you got to pick which one you wanted.

Of course, they could fix all of this by giving you a guaranteed game for trading in X amount of coal, or even letting you "craft" the coupons that you know you're not going to use. This way everyone wins.

I told a friend of mine about the sale and he's done 3 objectives now and has won 2 games. I've done 9 and all I have is coupons.

So yes, very underwhelming.
Coupons stack with deals.
Do we have confirmation that this is true? The value of a coupon just went way up, if it is.
Yay more coupons for me. Is anyone else SERIOUSLY disappointed with the coupons? For me the worst part about these coupons is that they are a lower % off then the games on sale. Why the hell would I care about 25% off a game thats currently 60% off?
Do we have confirmation that this is true? The value of a coupon just went way up, if it is.
It's in the coupon FAQ, so I would say yes, it's (mostly) true:

"Can I use coupons on already discounted items?

Coupons are valid on discounted items unless specified otherwise."
Do we have confirmation that this is true? The value of a coupon just went way up, if it is.
Well, only if it's a coupon for a game you want. If it's something you have, or don't care about, then it's still worthless. I have a 50% off coupon for The Wonderful End of the World, a game I care nothing about. Even if it was 75% off on sale, I still wouldn't care to use the coupon.

It's a neat idea, but in practice, I much preferred the tickets/prizes from the Summer Sale. At least then you could get prizes you cared about, instead of random coupons for games you probably don't care about.

What's this about Rage? It shows up 33,50 euro's for me. I would have bit on 20 dollars (There's always a friendly american available here to help me get games cheaper than our rediculous prices ;) ) but what happened?

Anyways nothing for me today. The interesting games are either still too expensive or I already own them. Another day without wallet-rape :)

I'm just disappointed that they didn't do the intelligent thing and have the gifts/coupons check themselves against your existing game library.

I fully understand them wanting people to use the trading system and season of giving and all that but most of these coupons are, in fact, useless during said season of giving.

3 pieces of coal for me today. On the plus side I am liking Defense Grid quite a bit.

One more piece of coal to go for the 7. The question is, is there a chance the seven pieces of coal can result in you getting another piece of coal or is it guaranteed to be a game/coupon?

This.

I own a TON of games on Steam - probably 1/5 of the games on the list that can be won. So on the off chance that I do win a game, I have a 1 in 5 chance of it being something I already have.
What's this about Rage? It shows up 33,50 euro's for me. I would have bit on 20 dollars (There's always a friendly american available here to help me get games cheaper than our rediculous prices ;) ) but what happened?

I suspect Rage was a daily deal they released early.

Or ya know what, at least check the coupons/gifts against your friends' wishlists if they want to foster that season of giving ideal.

Right now it's like find some random person to either gift or trade a game/coupon to.
