Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Not giving up just yet, just taking a break. It is tough just getting 5 hellicopters on the screen.
Here's my view on the coal

Sure, you can craft coal into (MAYBE) a good game but each piece of coal gets you one chance to get every single game on Steam.

Now is there any one game we can't buy on Steam? Nope
Yep, Battlefield 3, Starcraft 2, among others

Is there anyone that can afford to go out right now and buy every single game? Sure but I'm not one of them.

So my policy is let the coal stay and try to win them all. The game that was going to be crafted would probably be added to the backlog and will eventually be 5 dollars on Steam at some point anyhow.
I disagree. Chances of winning that grand prize are close to naught. Might as well try and win a game (or coupon for a game) you like right now. Of course there's also not an extremely high chance that you will, but still mighty much higher than winning all the games. Who in his right mind would buy out the whole steam store? That's rediculous. Even if you can, there's no reason to because you can't hope play them all at the same time. Also, you're not winning every game that will ever come out on steam. Just the ones that are out up to now. So all those games (that you have 0 chance of winning anyway) will also be added to the backlog, and will eventually be 5 dollars on Steam at some point.

So... buy what you like now (and try to get coupons for them). Buy other games you like, but that are still too expensive, later for those 5 dollars like you said.

That's just my POV though.

With all the people that are buying coal and then factoring in the number of accounts that are being created using the HiB for contest entries, the odds look bad.

I think, given recent insights into trading coal, Im gonna try to trade my coal after I get a few more. I cant win 2 dollars on a scratch off never mind the entire steam library.

Its kinda funny looking back and forth between the great gift pile achieve website and my library checking to see if I own the game or not. Ive gotten so many bundles I dont have a clue what I own anymore.

The number of people buying coal doesn't change your own chances of winning. If 100 people have 1 coal each, and you're one of them, your own chances of winning a single drawing remain the same (1%) if the other 99 people keep their one coal, or if they trade them all to one person. We don't yet know how many pieces of coal there will be in the Steam universe on January 2nd, but at the time of drawing, it will be a fixed number, and so will the amount that you have, yourself. From those numbers, and knowing how many prizes there are (1151), you can calculate your chance of winning one of the prizes, regardless of what others are doing with their coal.

However, it is illustrative of just how much coal is out there, and your point about the HiBs is true. There's millions of pieces out there. If I can trade them for a buck a piece worth of games, I think I'll do that.
The Isaac achievement is only partly luck.

The door shows when you defeat any level other than the Basement while not taking a lot of damage. There is no random chance at the door showing up -- complete the level losing only one (maybe two) hearts at the max and the door will show. If you aren't getting the door to show up, you're getting hit too many times.

Its luck that Krampus appears but he seems to be pretty common... it took me only three doors to get him.
No way this is true. Because I remember a few times in the caves I beat bosses only getting hit once or twice. I did beat a boss once in the caves without taking any hits (was my first time I was happy and when I went into the fight I only had 1 heart so I remember pretty well).

From what it looks like browsing the Steam forums real quick, it purely luck it seems.

Yes but each piece of coal is an entry to the drawing. In your example, the 100 accounts are each a different person but it would be more accurate to make an example where you have 1 piece of coal and you're up against 19 people with 5 accounts each with 1 piece of coal. Or, like people are doing, gathering massive amounts of coal through trading. Your chance isn't reduced compared to any other piece of coal being selected but your chance is significantly reduced against other people being selected.

Sure, you might stand there proud of your 14 pieces of coal at the end of the Christmas sale but then you'll have people out there with hundreds, if not over a thousand pieces (people already have over a hundred). Since there's not a set number of coal right now, the amount of coal changing hands does matter because not only can people hoard coal, people can generate coal.

I think I'll try this again tonight then. I just am not a fan of this game and I'm probably in a minority. Early on it's fun but when it gets chaotic I start to lose my mind. This isn't a fair comparison but I loved playing time management games like Diner Dash, Sally's Salon, etc. and those get kind of nuts in later levels, too. I even love it when I'm a Vanquisher in Torchlight, raining down arrows, laying traps, running, shooting, buffing, summoning zombies all within the span of a few seconds.

Anyway, I guess I need about 200 more landings in Flight Control HD to actually unlock the windy level as I've only unlocked the level before it.

...This game to me is the equivalent of mowing the lawn for the first time in spring. I don't want to do it but it's there, it's not an awful achievement, gets me started for the (Steam sale) season, and I reward myself when I'm done by sneaking out to Jack In The Box with a cheeseburger for my toil. :bouncy:

Collecting hundreds or thousands of pieces of coal for the drawing doesn't make much sense to me. There is going to be a lot of coal by the end of this and it's not like winning that grand prize is like winning millions of dollars in the lottery. I almost think that the people collecting it have to be crafting it into presents? But that doesn't make much sense either, since you probably just end up with a 33% off coupon or something?

While it isn't the same as winning millions in the lottery it could still be a huge money saver. If you won every game then you could pretty much get by for quite a long time without buying any games. That or you could sell your account.

I just mean that the EV of buying a 1 dollar lottery ticket seems positive (even though it's not) because the payout is so huge (almost incomprehensible to people). But spending a buck on a piece of coal which by itself still is probably going to be like a 1 in a million chance at every game on steam. Maybe I'm underestimating the value of something like that, but what is "every game on steam" worth if you put it on ebay? Like 10 grand? I can't fathom it being more than that (yeah, I realize each game added up is probably more than 10 grand, but who really WANTS every game on steam).

EDIT: I'm just saying that the effort of collecting hundreds of these seems like it is a lot of work, for a small chance, at a grand prize that really isn't that huge of a dollar amount. Like if Valve was giving away a million dollars, then it would make more sense.

This person has all the games on steam I believe.

http://www.steamcalculator.com/id/techanalyst

Their account is worth 20,437.28 USD.

That is without any discounts, or any sale price. If we count sales, it could be half of that, or less. Who would even want every game?

Just tried Renagade Ops and I must say that game is very fun. The only problem is it works best with a 360 gamepad and doesn't support my gamepad so I have to joy 2 key it sometime.

Still can't be $3 for it.

Now to try E.Y.E. after the update.

Hey, about Renegade Ops -- I hear that in order to play local co-op, you need two 360 controllers, i.e. M+KB and one 360 controller doesn't work. Could you please confirm that that's true?

Huh. Hadn't seen that site before. That's pretty cool. Apparently I own just shy of $1500 worth of games, but I know I've only paid ~$333 for all of them. I'm fine with that.

I'm about to buy an E.Y.E. 4 pack - I plan to give away the extra copies. In return, I would appreciate at least $1 donation to the CAG fundraiser on the front page, but it's not necessary. First 3 PMs will get them, preference given to those who donate.

For the person who asked about Skydrift - I played the demo and it seemed pretty fun. I read on the forums that multiplayer is supposed to be a lot of fun, but it's not always easy to find a match. I almost pulled the trigger at $10 for it, glad I waited now tho.

How 'bout my "Valve 33% Off" coupon. That counts, right?

EDIT: Oh yeah, coal trading works for me. Anyone interested?
Railworks 3 for 3.50!
Anyone even the slightest bit interested should jump on
I'm pondering it, but I don't know if I want to go down that rabbit hole of DLC insanity.

I mean all the DLC is $300 and that's after 81% was taken off the price.

If I'm not mistaken Saints Row The 3rd ha been 33% off the entire sale so far hasn't it? So a 33% off daily deal isn't very impressive.

Hrm. EYE looks like it could be a bit of silly cyberpunk fun for $2.50. Does anyone have any outstanding love or hate for this game, to sway me either way on buying it?

It was just released, so I'm not surprised that the price is still a bit high.

Personally, I'd be more interested in the game if it at least had a funny story like Saints Row 2. To hear that it's all "wacky nonsense" makes me quite sad.

Since getting EYE in a 4 pack yesterday that game has given me nothing but headaches. It has crashed my pc 5 times, and my specs are well above the requirements. I have even gone as far as deleting and reinstalling the damn game and it is still doing the same crap. I guess that since it only cost me 1.88 it isnt that big of a deal, but I just dont get why dev's release shit like this onto the market....
i'm about to buy an e.y.e. 4 pack - i plan to give away the extra copies. In return, i would appreciate at least $1 donation to the cag fundraiser on the front page, but it's not necessary. First 3 pms will get them, preference given to those who donate.
pm'd.

Saints Row 3 has had bad performance for me and many others since launch, they still haven't fixed it. I wouldn't recommend buying it now if you think it'll go on sale again later once they improve performance, if they ever do. Driving takes the framerate into the 20s no matter what video settings I use.

I know it's a new game. But it's been 33% off the entire sale. Waste of a Daily Deal slot, unless it just hasn't updated yet.
Hrm. EYE looks like it could be a bit of silly cyberpunk fun for $2.50. Does anyone have any outstanding love or hate for this game, to sway me either way on buying it?
Its been a little difficult for me to get into. Its not exactly boring, but the atmosphere makes me extremely tired every time I try to play.

Also, isn't EYE the exact same price it was yesterday?
