Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I love Binding of Isaac, however I will warn any achievement hunters that the achievement does take some skill. The achievement boss only has a slight chance of appearing in a devil room which has a chance of showing up if you beat a floor taking very little damage. So not only is it quite random, but requires some skill. I was very lucky and got it in about 15 minutes (granted I had put 18 hours into the game before finding out about the achievement), but I have seen other people take up to 4 or 5 hours to get it.

tl;dr I highly recommend BoI, but it is not an easy achievement to get
Should I get Left 4 Dead 2 or the bundle with original L4D?
Every L4D map is being added to L4D2 for free. The original game is really only worth it for the achievements now, if you're an achievement whore.

If anyone needs help doing the L4D2 achievement, I'm the original Jew Diamond Phillips on Steam. The one with the Aeris "Scream" avatar. Yes, people copied my name because I'm that good at L4D2. ;) Or maybe they just watched the same SNL skit, I don't know.
it was at the end of the screenshot earlier, so they must have the option somewhere to do this.
Anyone has the option to do it......but I can tell you now that nothing will come of it at all.

I thought Binding of Issac was twisted and creepy with a very sick sense of humor. I did enjoy it though. It was frustrating and after like 2 hours of gameplay I still couldn't get the achievement. Too random. Very vintage feeling though, which was neat. Glad I got it in the bundle.

So what's the word on the Quake bundle? Also Quake IV...

I can't remember it going on sale often. What do you all think?

Quick question.... if I buy a game off steam, and there are mods for it (like new maps, models and so on), will they still work or does Steam check the software to make sure it's not altered.

Looks to me like only main accounts being banned are those who can be traced to these dummy accounts with multiple trading/bundle codes. I'm sure the steam TOS state this behavior is against their terms and they can be banned. I doubt if you are trading with someone innocently it's going to be an issue. Unless you somehow just randomly ran into these people who for some reason were willing to give you a ton of valuable games for coal and then you probably had to know something was fishy.

You're 'sure' but you haven't read them. So okay.

Technically it's a violation of the rules of the contest. But having multiple steam accounts is not against the steam terms of service.

I got the Binding of Issac as part of a Humble Bundle. It is a dungeon-only version of the original Legend of Zelda, but it has the Team Meat sense of "humor." (A child that shoots tears and has the ultimate goal of murdering his mother. In addition, between stages, he recalls hurtful memories of mistreatment. Does that sound like the product of a well-adjusted group of people?)

If I had to rate the game solely on its gameplay, I think the shooting mechanic is a bit too slow. That aspect is paired with enemies that cause a bit too much damage, making even skilled players likely to have to restart. The items that make the difference between a successful "round" and an unbeatable one are randomized. Therefore, Issac is only fun for those with the time to truly humor it.

At $1.24, anyone's welcome to try it, but I can't recommend it myself.

Everyone is always linking to those WTF is videos. I would normally watch it but I don't need anyone to give me 15 minutes on a $1.25 game. Some of them are much worse like 45 minutes. Am I the only one who has never watched one of these because of their length?

Quake 4 was just recently added to Steam so this is the cheapest it's been by itself. It was part of the Quakecon pack as well as the new iD Superpack, both of which are great deals if you don't have the rest of the catalog. Q1 and 2 also have mods that work with Steam, and the gameplay of 1 still holds up for a quick arcade shooter experience.

I haven't played it yet but my understanding is that a lot of the theme in the game is a combination metaphor for some of the developers personal struggles and allegory of the story of the sacrifice of Isaac. Maybe its an artsy thing but again I like to see more of this kind of thing in games. I love to be able to pull something out of my games beyond just, I had a good time. That being said I don't always want that but I'm glad that someone is doing it.

I doubt they'll ban people that lightly exploited the giftpile. It's looking to be that users who created 100+ accounts are the ones getting banned. That, and they used SAM which made it more obvious, but I haven't heard any reports of someone getting banned for only creating a few accounts.

Steam could've easily prevented this though, I don't know why they didn't put a stop to this before the promotion even started.

Man I think I'm a sucker :( . I feel worse for the person banned with 1000 games on their account because they are female.

I know people have modded other games on Steam (the original Deus Ex, for example) with little problem, so I don't think it would be any different in this case.

Personally, I do find the guy entertaining, even if I'm not particularly interested in the game. I did like his Dungeons Of Dredmor review.

I have about a 2 minute attention span for video reviews. 5-10 if I am really interested but its pushing it.

I modded the crap out of Oblivion - it's not discouraged at all. Your mods are not automatically erased either when you boot up Steam (I can't speak to what happens if you do an 'integrity' check on the game - i.e. you're experiencing problems and cross reference your file with the server file). However, just normal modding is no problem (in fact - with Skyrim, they're building that mod community area to make it even easier!).
Most of them are already ported. I think there is only one left.
Is it necessary to have L4D installed to play those levels in L4D2?

If BoI had good enemies, good bosses, better shooting, and less boring level design, it might have been a good game. I've beat it something close to 10 times and regret the effort. It feels so empty and tedious.

And the game is as deep as a thimble and as subtle as 4chan.

It's flash, poorly coded, and your saves are kept in the flash cache. The game isn't easy but its not deep or well designed enough to be compelling. You are getting only $1.24 worth of game with this, as well as Team Meats crappy attitude.

Also, the cheevo. Devil rooms spawn less than half the time on a perfect floor clear. Less if you take damage. The boss for the cheevo has a 5% chance of spawning in devil rooms. The odds are ridiculous.

Soundtrack is decent though.

I am one of the ones who thought BoI looked terrible from the videos but picked up the humble bundle which had it. Lets just say after 100 hours and achieving Golden God it was a pleasant surprise. Even with my huge backlog I could not stop playing it. It is very addictive, but hugely random.

That being said this achievement is probably one of the hardest things I have had to do in the game. Random as the game is this is ridiculous. I have been playing on and off since the sale started and haven't even seen Krumpus.

My worry is people will buy this game for the achievement, rage hard on it and never try it again. not only that the boss is tough from what I have seen and for new players it is going to take you a while to adjust to the game, controls enemies etc. Really a terrible achievement. I would definitely not recommend not picking up the game for the achievement, only pick it up if you have a mild curiosity about it and want to actually play it.

I think it's either a love it or hate it type game but I was really surprised by it.
Quick question.... if I buy a game off steam, and there are mods for it (like new maps, models and so on), will they still work or does Steam check the software to make sure it's not altered.
It depends on how the mods interact with the game. Most games work fine but you'll want to check that specific's game forum to be sure.

Public Service Announcement: Avoid Sword of the Stars 2. The game is buggy and unfinished and people are lucky if they're able to finish a game without crashing. It is almost literally completely unplayable and it baffles me why it would be a daily deal. Wait until Kerberos has patched it to a working state at which point it will probably be cheaper anyway.

You'll be glad to hear the WTF is series are 'First impressions' then, and not reviews :)

To everyone considering getting the Binding of Issac, you can probably get a $1.24's worth out of it even if you hate it, although you just might wish you had your dollar and change back after playing it. It's not worth buying solely for a cheap achievement unless you're dedicated and find out you're good at the game. Personally, I put a little over an hour into it and decided it's not my type of game.

How are Wasteland Angel and Xotic? I see mixed reviews on both, and while both are cheap, I've bought enough entertaining, cheap games during this sale alone that I don't need ones that I might not even play past the achievement.
Thanks.
That being said though. I still like the feel and look of l4d more. I feel Valve was really crappy about abandoning it and making it pointless so fast.

Well put. The Binding of Issac looses a lot of points for all aspects of its implementation. Flash-based means lost saves and no gamepad options. Luck-based gameplay mechanics mean no skill. (No skill means no promise of improvement.) I support independent Developers heavily, but when a bad game is made, I'm not going to support it just for its Indie roots.

If that were the case, Cave Story would be on the same level as Binding of Issac. No way.
I'd like to know if it's been cheaper on Amazon or another site.
Shogun 2 was 7.50 on Amazon a little while back, but that's the cheapest I've seen it.

Keep in mind that I'm not sure BoI was ever marketed as a full production game. It was always a single guys side project to my knowledge. Granted it has now garnered a lot of buzz and I think that message was lost.

It is almost literally completely unplayable and it baffles me why it would be a daily deal. Wait until Kerberos has patched it to a working state at which point it will probably be cheaper anyway.
Thanks for the warning. I was very interested in this but was probably going to pass due to the price. But now I will wait for sure.
Everyone is always linking to those WTF is videos. I would normally watch it but I don't need anyone to give me 15 minutes on a $1.25 game. Some of them are much worse like 45 minutes. Am I the only one who has never watched one of these because of their length?
I've watched a couple. Despite any good or provocative points these videos want to make I often get the sense that they like the sound of their own voice and/or are squeezing vitriol and bile out into a video as some kind of grab for attention. I know that's generalizing but I've heard the same rants after working in game stores in my youth.

Back on topic, I'm hoping that the Gundemonium Collection goes on sale tomorrow. I really want that pack, and the achievements are icing on the cake. $4.99 is still a good bite price though... Time to play the demos then I guess! :)
You're 'sure' but you haven't read them. So okay.

Technically it's a violation of the rules of the contest. But having multiple steam accounts is not against the steam terms of service.

Keep in mind that I'm not sure BoI was ever marketed as a full production game. It was always a single guys side project to my knowledge. Granted it has now garnered a lot of buzz and I think that message was lost.
You've got a point there. After all, I believe it's normally $4.99. Nevertheless, I believe there are freeware games out there with better overall quality. It may just be the result of a side project, but the end result definitely isn't the most worthwhile game on Steam in the $1-5 range.

There's always the "Cthulhu Saves the World & Breath of Death VII" Double Pack for $1.02.

You are right, BoI only took Ed 3 months to complete. Also recently he asked people on his twitter if they would pay $3 for a HUGE Isaac update sometime next year.

Yes companies put things like this in their EULAs all the time. It doesn't mean anyone expects them to use them. The problem in this scenario is that the people who had their accounts banned aren't very likable because they were screwing over the humble bundle which everyone has a lot of respect and affection for. If this was a different situation and they were just creating accounts taking Humble out of the picture i think people would be more upset. If Steam continues to do things like this it will be very bad PR even if they do have the legal right.

I already pointed out a couple pages back that Valve can ban your account at any time, for anything it considers 'wrong.' But, that's not what you said. You said you were sure that having multiple accounts was against the TOS.

And I'm saying it's not. If you're going to use that as your example, then EVERYTHING is against the TOS.

Wanna see how lost? Go to the BoI steam forums and say BoI needs mid game saves rather than the current "beat it in one sitting" thing.

You'll be treated like the guy who says "Your and you're? Their the same thing."

No I didn't. I stated that abusing the contest with buying HIB bundles and trading for achievements was against the TOS. Which it is. And I was sure it was. And I was right.

Ouch that last sentence actually hurt my head. Sometimes it isn't fun having a degree in language.

I finally got 7 pieces of coal and traded them in...and got a coupon for 50% off Kane and Lynch 2 I can't use until after January 2nd.

Ho ho ho.

Another note about BoI, I am a M&K user primarily but I can not play BoI on keyboard. I had to use Joy2Key and my xbox controller. made for a much better experience.
