Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Yeah but free rentals on PSN isn't that great
I agree with you, but I doubt most people will want to play Hydrophobia Prophecy for more than the "rental" period. The game is terrible, I wouldn't buy it even at the coupon price.
I've given each of the challenge missions a shot as they've come up, but they really do drag the fun out of things. Fortunately, they aren't necessary unless you really, really want to get everything possible in the game. I'm content to run around kicking ass on the real islands.
I loved that the challenges were butt-kickingly challenging. It makes life easier, though, to do them once you've unlocked nearly everything (i.e. complete run-throughs). In getting 100% achvs, I ended up finishing the game three times.

In regards to the shield, if you're using a gamepad, there are two ways to use the shield. One is a left trigger button which is kinda, auto-lock-on, and the best way to use it is to position yourself well so that everything is coming at you from the same direction. You can also aim the shield 360 degrees with the R analog stick, and that's much trickier. I almost never used this method.

Using Mouse + Keyboard. I don't mind that the challenges are hard, I just find the targeting and aiming to be a bit off at times (like the hammer). I don't know if it is that I just suck or what. I guess I don't want to get every achievement for this game but I guess I kinda want to clear every area once for some reason  which included all the challenges.

I bet the shield one but that was pretty much more hell than it should of been. I loved how I had the shield deployed and still some of those flying shots off those statue like things would hit me (very rarely but it was annoying enough).

I tried that game on PS+, played it for like 10-15 mins and told myself I don't need to play more. It just wasn't interesting. I mean there are games I would pay for after the rental peroid or double dip on Steam if possible but Hydrophobia is not one of them.
Ha! You can take it up with Amazon, it's what they call it.
Heh, dunno where they've started doing that, but on their site they just call it a download (or a PC download).
Although modems use analog technology (telephone audio) to transmit data between two points. So I could make a strong case that you're incorrect, sir.
In that case it wouldn't be a digital download. So it's still fucking stupid to call it that. :applause:

You know, every once in a while some smart alec has to make a big stink about digital downloads. Who cares? It's a term. Yes all downloads are digital but arguing over it in the deal thread isn't going to make the deal any better. A lot of stores and other sites are using the term so I suggest you take it up with the general internet at large or start a campaign or a meme or some thing but squabbling over it here isn't going to do anything be come off annoyingly pedantic.

Actually Amazon puts everything you get from their game, mp3, kindle, etc stores under "My Digital Items."

This. Besides, it's easy enough to handwave away. It's not digital downloads, it's digital downloads: digital information you download off a server, rather than having digital media shipped to your mailing address.

Ah, but see, even if the signal is analog because of the medium it's still converted back to digital data once it's received and error-checked by the receiver.

And that's setting aside when you transmit the data as light. Shit goes all crazy then, man.

^ End of discussion.

Let's focus on those Steam deals in the The Steam Deal Thread now. :booty:

I didn't know if I was going to buy Civ 5 or not through Amazon...and I ultimately did. Glad the promo was still going on today. Although I just got Civ IV, I decided to get it to knock something else off my list. But I haven't received my key yet... =\

Totally agree with you, JustYourAverageJoe, and Motoki. Well said, folks.

Back on topic: I want to purchase Civilization V for my friend who owns a Mac mini (it's on sale at Amazon and I can use my $5 credit on it). I don't know much about Mac minis; would this game even run on such a system?

EDIT: BTW, this game is listed in Steam as being compatible with PC and Mac. Just needed to know if the Mac mini is powerful enough.
EDIT II: Hm, based on this Yahoo! Answers thread it appears that the game would run really slow on a Mac mini. Guess I'm not going to pick this up for my friend.

Ooh, it's not so much the games that are tempting me, but the OSTs. Can anyone comment on how the soundtracks are? They worthwhile?
The last time Hydrophobia was a Daily Deal it was 75% off. Somehow the game got more valuable. :oldman:
To be fair the game has dropped in price, from about $12 to $9, so the sale price is about the same.
Any opinions on it? I enjoy puzzle games for time to time, wondering if this is any good.
I'd like to know what people think about this as well. The price is tempting and I'm always a sucker for a good puzzle game, but I don't want to 'fly in blind', so to speak.

I'm tempted to try it too. There's a Eurogamer review available for it 5/10 that doesn't totally turn me off of the premise.
Alright, fine, I'll be the damn Lucid guinea pig!
Heh sorry I would've downloaded it but I've got to hit the sack soon. Just had to do a couple of things and happened to check the steam forum for the game while I was waiting for a download to complete. :)

Alright, I've played a few levels of it. Here's the lowdown.

Lucid is a block-based puzzler in which you clear blocks by drawing a line through solid sections of a single color. You can only clear a section of a color if you can trace a line through all blocks in the section without doubling over or leaving any uncovered. You're given a specific color for each move you have to make. Clearing consecutive "task" colors adds to your combo. You can go off-task to clear sections of other colors out to make a bigger block of a color, but it resets your combo. The level ends when you've filled up a meter by clearing task colors.

The gameplay itself is decent. It's kind of a relaxing puzzler. It really needs a true tutorial. All it does is send you into the first level with only a couple somewhat helpful tip windows. The display/sound/control options are the most limited I've ever seen for a PC game (there are two total options).

Overall, it's a decent puzzle game, especially if you're looking for something a bit more relaxing. For $1.25, I can't complain too much.

Thanks for the impressions, you spoony bard :).

Lucid sounds like alright and I'm seriously tempted by the buckandaquarter price.

I noticed from one of the videos that I might have trouble with the green and orange blocks, being colorblind. That and the fact that I got the Popcap pack in the Winter sale (and thus have enough idle puzzlers to last for a while) make me think that I should pass for now.

Then again, I'll likely regret having not bought this when it turns up in the Summer sale achievement contest.... that does it, I'm punching Gaben right in the butt next time I see him. Marketing is one thing, but deliberately playing with people's compulsions to get at their wallets is out-and-out evil.

While I want to buy Lucid, the lack of graphical options kinda turns me off. I read on the Steam forums it's 800x600 windowed and unless you stretch it it's the only graphic option. Guess I will pass. Thanks for the review Spoony Bard.

I am surprised by Nuclear Dawn. That game is awesome. It feels like if Battlefield got rid of the vehicles, but instead made smaller more manageable maps, but added in two commanders who can build spawns, turrets, supplies, etc. If your commanders suck, then the game gets hard, but you level via kills and such so even if your commanders suck, you can still get xp.

After all the money I spent on games this past sale...I still played L4D2 multiplayer for 6 hours straight tonight. Scavenge only. I need an intervention. ._. But on the plus side...I never lost, and I only raged twice.

Thanks for the review, BSB. It sounds decent enough, but I'll pass since Crayon Physics already fills my need for relaxing games.

YO! i LOVED scavenge. my friends only played versus, so I never tried scavenge at first. then when I started achievement hunting, I had to play scavenge and found it to be extremely fun. You dont feel as bad as you do in versus when you lose, and it feels great when you win. Team work is required.

Does anyone have a Bejeweled or even a Popcap coupon they wouldn't mind parting with? I'd like to pick up Bejeweled today or at least sometime during the sale.

Haha, I was coming to say nearly the exact same thing!

Aztaka was $2.50 during the Winter sale, so it has been less. Still, $1 more is not that much.

I'll be damned if the environment and platforming don't look like they came from Team Meat. That's a good thing. I was surprised that neither of them seem to have anything to do with it.

I want it now! I can't wait for next week!

I almost forgot about Dustforce. I'm very interested in that game. It looks like it's a good blend of style and substance, and I like the premise. I'm glad I have my wireless Xbox 360 controller set up on my gaming laptop; this game looks like it's going to need it.
Wow, if they do a soundtrack bundle this will be a almost guaranteed purchase when it gets on a Steam sale.
I hate to turn this in to the Dustforce topic, but since people seem interested, here's a quote from a programmer/soundtrack guy.

I'm going to release a soundtrack after the game release. I think I'll be doing a pay-what-you-want pricing scheme. Keep an eye on lifeformed.com!

He's been doing some posts over on Reddit, here's his account:

EDIT: Alright, I'm trying to stop looking in to this game but I can't. If you want to give it a shot, they put out a concept demo in 2010. The framerate is iffy, and it lacks some of the polish of the trailer, but it still plays pretty damn good.

I didn't see any links for free indie games. Which ones are you talking about?

I assume he's talking about the stuff under "Free Stuff" in the OP.

Seeing YET ANOTHER game with the pixellated art style and the chiptune-ish soundtrack makes me cringe. Platforming looks a shade too gimmicky for my tastes, I've never met a platformer with the goal of momentum chaining that I've really liked. (The fun of that trailer evaporates instantly when you drop combo and the fun of success does not outweigh the lows of failure and the climb from failure to success.) Looks more N+ than Super Meat Boy, too.

I'll give Dustforce a shot if there's a demo though. It's got enough style, even though it is completely in the "yet another" realm for most of what the trailer showed.

If I actually had the autism required to do it, I would dig up a list of first person shooters in the CoD vein to compare against platformers like this and say WHAT IS THERE TOO MUCH OF NOW HUH HUH but I hope I'm still above making bulleted lists to win poorly thought out arguments on the internets... At least for now.

Also, I forgot: indie games
