CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)

@Draekon: Thanks for that short(?!) review of Wanderlust. I've been wondering about it but based on your info and what I've read elsewhere I think I will pass for now.

Regarding the not being able to get past chapter 3 issue some people were having, apparently the dev said something about people needing to install an updated version of Visual C++ and/or .Net framework or some such. Except Steam games are supposed to automatically install that stuff if they need it so it seems a bit amateurish that they didn't do that, even if most people already have it by default.

Anyway, it sounds like there are too many issues still and it doesn't look or sound at all like a game that's worth $7-$10 to me, or even $5 with a 4 pack so I'll wait until it's $2.50 or below or else in a bundle. By then maybe they will iron some of the kinks out as well.
Actually I have tried 18 wheels of steel, although not the Steam version. I like the mechanics of Rig N Roll just not the racing aspect of it. 18 Wheels of Steel has this problem where is too much of a sim where yeah I have to watch my speed and stuff, which gets annoying because the truck handles way better in Rig N Roll.

Why am I comparing two trucking simulators, what is wrong with me?
Ah I look forward to installing and playing Rig n Roll now then. Handling is the one thing I hate about 18 Wheels of Steel as it sometimes seems it is imposable to make a turn or not to hit someone because of how the handling is.
I try to play them but I have no idea what I'm doing.

I own them all but I suck at it, I feel as if I'm just playing the tutorial and once it's done holding my hand I'm just in a big vat of suck.

I only tried the first one, do any of the other games have a better tutorial I can use to understand how to play the whole series?
I would recommend just reading some tips docs. A lot of people try to play without losing a single unit so it's definitely not tough to play if you read a few hints.

Since it is a slow day around here and I got a good laugh from it, check out the thread:

Rumored Gamestop Gamestock Finale: B2G1 Free Used Games

At least the first page anyhow. Be sure to read the tags too.

See what we are missing by buying digital downloads? We don't get Gamestop employees winking at us and sticking their finger to their mouth.

Plus after reading that thread I somehow feel my manhood that Coconut Queen had stripped from me has now been restored.

Yeah, the issues the game has I don't see being a problem for very long and honestly if you aren't playing with at least 2 other people, then your experience just won't be the same.

And yeah, that's the short version where I just write down whatever comes to mind for a rather quick review. When I write real reviews, they're pretty lengthy and most people don't take the time to read them, so I don't bother.

I'm a BIG fan of Kung Fu Strike. It's chinese developed which allows you to see what people who aren't REALLY accustomed to the traditional Jap or Euro or American norms try to do, but when you get right down to it, it is a satisfying, fast-paced beat-em-up that is wickedly hard and doesn't give a crap about you. It's rather unique in style but in pacing and challenge it's closest to Ninja Gaiden Black but with the limited moveset and specific counters of something like Golden Axe Beast Rider, but I don't even remember that turd all that well.

Either way, big thumbs up for Kung Fu Strike but it is balls to the wall hard

So I went to several Half-Price books today, and found something I'd like to share since we were discussing retro games several pages back...I GOT A BOXED COPY OF MOUSETRAP FOR THE COLECOVISION!! I still had my overlays, but no box...now my coleco life is complete!
º PITMAN has been unlocked for all purchases
º They have added SHADOWS ON THE VATICAN and METAL DEAD to their offerings.
º Two more games, THE VATICAN and DEADLY 30 will be added tomorrow.
º Build a Bundle now only requires you to purchase two of those, not three
Awww, lame, I should have waited to purchase bab2! Now its gonna cost more to get the other games. Also, I don't see Pitman listed anywhere for me...
FYI for anyone interested, Metal Dead and Gemini Rue (and Resonance, and the Blackwell games, and Ben There, and more) are built with Adventure Game Studio. There is an Android version of AGS that can be found here with instructions. Anyone with an Android phone/tablet can copy these games from their Steam (or Desura/DD) folders onto their device and play them on the go.
Interesting, I didn't know AGS was ported to Android now; I only knew about the port for PSP. Well between AGS and SCUMM, we can play all our fantastic point and click adventure games anywhere on anything now!
Now that I nominate for link of the week! Thanks.
Second!

EDIT: Oh and I forgot to mention. I researched a bit more into the whole Rage thing; trying to figure out this randomness. Well the basic idea I've found is that there are 4 different copies of the game...and its really strange too.
1. Rage Anarchy Edition with Slipcover - "Rage - Retail" Key (has Anarchy Edition included)
2. Rage Anarchy Edition - "Rage (NA)" Key (normal copy of Rage, Anarchy content on separate keys)
3. Rage Standard - "Rage (NA)" (normal copy)
4. Rage Standard - "Rage - Retail" (has Anarchy Edition included)

there may even be more variations, but this is what I've found so far

EDIT 2: Also to avoid confusion Anarchy Edition Content = Rage Authority Pack DLC; Rage Sewers DLC is separate content.

Thank you, going to go over to gamefaq and read some things on it.

Regarding Build a Bundle 2 updates.

1.Pitman is not unlocked yet (unlocks at $25,000, so it should unlock relatively quickly with less than $1000 left to go)

2. It seems the majority of the games added are adventure/point and click games with most available only on Desura and 1 on Steam (Operation Valkyrie game)

3. The new music creates a Diddy Kong Racing itch like no other. Thank god I still have my copy.

In case it makes or breaks peoples opinions...

I've had nothing but weird bugs from Wanderlust. To be fair, I'm just supporting the dev but even the tutorial had MAJOR bugginess about it. For example, random stuff will pop onto the screen when I hit e for the information. It doesn't happen once, it happens every time. So I mash e a couple of more times and eventually it goes away.

The controls feel very wierd for a keyboard. I really need to plug in my gamepad and try that. I think that's what they had in mind for the development anyways.

I don't have enough experience yet with gameplay and overall story but I'm ready to shelve this bad boy in the hopes of a good patch.

Now that's unexpected! That's a pretty sweet game and I definitely played mine a lot. COLECOVISION was a wonderful console that faced unfortunate timing. I've still got mine (along with ADAM, my rollerball, wheel, and Super Action Controller) in the basement. I have a Star Trek game for it that was like digital crack.

Even though the controllers were a big part of the experience, I'd love to see a COLECOVISION collection come to Steam. Though with all the different licenses needed I doubt that'll ever happen.

Ok so wrap your head around this. Imagine a rectangle controller but shaped like a old tv remote. A num pad at the bottom, yes a num pad, a joystick like stick thing on the top (pretty crappy one at that if I remember correctly), and two buttons on the side (one on each side).

You would think it would unlock quickly but I have been checking constantly and it has been around $23k for days. It did finally break the 24k barrier just barely now though, so maybe their cheap trick of late additions is working.

Also, of the 4 add-ons I believe only one is Desura, Metal Dead. Shadows on the Vatican, The Abbey and Deadly 30 I believe are just straight DRM free with no Steam or Desura at all.

To anyone who remembered me complaining about the graphics in San Andreas, check this out. I know its a dark and random pic, but this mission really demonstrated how awful and muddy the textures look, I guess its because its the first mission you get the sneak around in the dark. Not just the walls, look at CJ's skin and jeans, that is how the whole game looks. This is unacceptable, and they messed up with these ports or whatever. The game didn't look this bad on Xbox.

That thing is a beast, but it isn't as bad as...

the Jaguar controller. Did anyone buy this console on release date? The only game I remember worth playing on this console was Alien vs Predators.

The best 2d game controller, imo, is....
sega_saturn_pad_1.jpg
the Sega Saturn ver. 2 controller. I think of it as the better version of SNES controller.

Also, anyone know where I could find neo-geo usb pad? Can't believe I missed that when it was on sale on play-asia and ncsx.

I have been looking into the San Andreas mod for GTAIV. Looks pretty neat. Like one of those HD remakes Sony keeps raping.

Heh, I thought about doing that but I still didn't get the build at least one of every building tiki even though AFAIK I have them all unlocked and have put them all on the same map.

Also, the ending sort of bugged out on me and I got the people dancing but not the cinematic ending. Apparently, other people have had that issue too when I did some searching around. I won't go into spoilers but I did find out what the actual cinematic ending was so I know the jist of it.

OTOH, just showing a bunch of people dancing on various beaches with the you won message sort of works better as the ending because the cinematic one is a cliffhanger with a hook for the planned sequel which won't ever be made.

Anyway, I can't believe how many hours I put into this game for $2.50. Definitely got my money's worth but agreed achievements to show off how insane dedicated I am would have been nice.

We're only 1k from the goal. The new games should hopefully make it happen.

And point #3, that is the reason I haven't listened to it yet. I'd have a kart racing flashback and find myself up all night for 'just one...more...race.'

Wait, I don't even see the names of the games you mentioned anywhere. Oh, the games you're talking about are planned inclusions that aren't displayed on the main page yet. I see how it is, groupees. Making early adopters think twice is never a good move. :/

Anyone remember the Subsoap Infinity Bundle that was promoted during the free Faerie Solitaire giveaway from reddit and various other places? In case you don't recall, anyone who purchased Faerie Solitaire before the bundle launched was entitled to a free key for the Infinity Bundle, whereas others had to pay $27. It was said that the keys would give you access to your own account page where Steam keys, Android keys, and DRM-free stuff would be readily available as it was released. Indefinitely. A golden key for everything Subsoap ever releases.

We're approaching the third month with no word or sign of the website going up, except for a few promising words from the development team. I'm not sure if we'll actually see the site going up as Brian Kramer, one of the developers, said "the new guy" is free to "mess around" with the existing prototype page. Just a reminder to those who purchased one and have most likely forgotten about it now.

This is why I generally don't do Kickstarters.

The standard controllers were unique (as seen in that video posted), but the real stars were the Super Action Controllers (see below) which may be among the largest handheld controllers ever made, the trackball, and the steering wheel. The specialized controllers allowed you to play games similarly to the way they were played in the arcades (which was COLECOVISION's claim to fame).

They added Shadows on the Vatican and Metal Dead today. The other two are supposed to be added tomorrow so 4 late additions total but only one Desura and none are Steam. And yes it sucks for the early adopters. Next time around I will definitely wait until the last day to buy a Groupees bundle so I think they just shot themselves in the foot.

I've been keeping tabs on it every so often but honestly I don't have much hope for anything any time soon. It sounds like the original person he got to work on his site kept making every excuse under the sun while the one(s) now keeps saying 'Oh we're making progress!'. Right.

To me it's like the Indie Gala points. It might happen someday but honestly I'm not going to hold my breath.

Anyway I think most people who got infinity bundle keys were probably just people who bought FS1 cheap at some point. Hopefully not too many people put out for the Infinity Bundle on its own.

As for me, I got in when he did the alpha funding for FS2 prior to the infinity bundle. Forget how much I paid but it was nothing too crazy but not super cheap either. I think like $7-$8? He did give access to alpha builds of FS2 though, including an Android version which I've played quite a bit on my HP Touchpad so I can't complain too much. Still, getting the full on site someday would be nice.

There's some chatter about it here:

(WARNING Spoilers so don't look if you haven't finished Coconut Queen and don't want to be spoiled)

http://www.gamezebo.com/games/coconut-queen/forums/ending

But basically the jist is
There's a cinema scene where Liz gets through to the other side of the island and finds all the native women there. There's a temple with a man in it and the women are waiting on him there. He's basically the Coconut King.

I found an actual image of it too but now I can't remember where the hell I found it at. I'll keep looking.

*Edit: Still can't find the damned image, but there's a guy who talks about it at Big Fish who basically thinks the culript is saving Kaba-Lui for last and said on his first play through he did it first then did the two optional areas and did get the cinematic.

Oh yeah I remember this, I had people pissed that Brian sent me an email with an IB key. Gave up checking the site the first week or two of June.

On a side note, I just finished Dear Esther. It was pretty slow until about 10 minutes after I finished it. Stuff you don't remember seeing until you've finished the game and then your mind just runs with it. Even now an hour later, I'm having flashbacks to things I've seen in the game. Beautiful, beautiful game, definitely worth it for the psychological mind fuck alone.

Caved and bought Kung Fu Strike only to not be able to play it. I have been monkeying with it for over an hour and no luck. Checking the forums this apparently is very common in that many people cannot even get the game to start.

Awesome. $8 and over an hour later and I am quite annoyed.

the Intellivision controller was a sight to behold, too. had the number pad, and every game had a slide in piece of plastic to tell you what the buttons did. add in a disc that functions like a joystick, and some side buttons.

i wrecked my thumb playing games on that -- there were a few (the aforementioned tron:deadly discs, shark! shark!, and astrosmash, among others) that i could play 1 game of for hours, until my eyes bled.

controllers are so good now, it's hard to believe how odd they used to be.

Thanks for that. I too got the dancing ending and thought I had done something wrong. (Well, it looks like I kinda did.) I actually got a bit pissed at the game for that. What a crappy glitch. Although, I guess it really doesn't matter, we never find out the "why" anyway.

DAMN YOU, I had opened up all coleco controller posts getting ready to respond with that vid/controller...then I get you your post!

But ya, those were the BEST

EDIT: JC2-MP beta5 is over, here is the last screenshot I got of the final "Spawn everyone in game to Pie Island"
The game didn't look like that when I played it. I took this screenshot when I was messing around a few months ago. Yours looks like someone ran the Cutout filter from Photoshop on it, it's not supposed to look like that on PC.

I think their gpu was about to kick the bucket

Speaking of muddy graphics, I've encountered this weird problem on Prince of Persia Sands of Time, where I actually have to turn off the fog and water graphics and run graphics on lower settings because otherwise all I see IS fog and it was completely unplayable.

Way earlier in the thread (trying to catch up), game I've been playing the most since the sale?

Of the ones I have played, it's surprisingly KOTOR. The fighting is kind of odd, but I'm enjoying the story and the side mission stories a whole lot (and I don't even like SW), so much the game took precedence over SRTT (which probably is the second game on that list).

Another random q: I checked out briefly The Binding of Isaac, but I'm wondering if my settings are screwed up or I'm playing it wrong somehow, because the keyboard controls are terrible for me; especially the directional keys which are only responsive sporadically. Half the time my guy just drifts around the area on his own accord no matter what key I push, which got extremely frustrating.

ETA: awww, JCMP looks rad. Kinda wish I picked that up. Though not as much as Coconut Queen - the more I see of the game, the more I wish I did grab it.

Is it possible that you have a gamepad plugged in? I forget that I have mine in sometimes which leads to the same problem you're experiencing.

I thought The Binding of Isaac didn't have controller support, doesn't it even make mention of using joytokey? Odd that the gamepad would affect it ... then again if it really is causing it maybe using joytokey would fix it.

No, I mean a gamepad plugged in and wedged in your couch or chair while something like joytokey or a similar program is running. It's a long-shot but that's what I meant.

I think Isaac is supposed to be quite drifty. When I played the game, the characters would always glide a bit even after you had stopped pressing the movement keys.

I'm glad I didn't spend anything on it, went the charity route. Annoyed I can't do anything with the email yet though.

That thing is a beast, but it isn't as bad as...
jagcontroller.jpg
the Jaguar controller.

I didn't buy the Jaguar on release date it was a few months after release. WTF was I thinking?!??! "Do the math" AVP was good, Tempest 2000 was good too. Cybermorph wasn't bad either. Doom was cool but I could play it on my PC. I honestly don't think I owned any other games for it after those. I started getting into PC gaming after that debacle.

Yeah that definitely looks like what I remember. Do you have any idea what is going on with mine? Was this the Steam version? I installed and reinstalled several times.

EDIT: herp derp, all this complaining. I did a tiny bit of research (all of 2 minutes), and I found out its because my resolution was set to x16 colors not x32 colors. Well I feel stupid.

I had the Aquarius computer which was also by Mattel who did Intellivison. Funny to think that the company who makes Barbie was also making a video game console and a PC at one time. It had a very similar controller to that crazy Intellivision one. No stick, just that round pad and then some numbers.

I used to play the heck out of Utopia on that thing. Apparently, it's widely regarded as one of the strategy games, though Civilization V it was not.

Apparently, you can get it on the XBox Live Marketplace as part of the Intellivision pack.

That Colecovision controller and these other two are insane. Clearly I grew up during the wrong Era. I wish I lived in a time where the question, "Is this a good idea?" was always met with, "Sure why not"

I mean can you imagine someone trying to convince consumers that they need a controller like the Super Action Controller now days. My mind hurts just trying to think of how to use it.
