CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

What's great is the game is 25 GB because there is 25 GB worth of content there. Unlike other bad PC ports that are 25 GB for no fucking good reason .

I really liked Freedom Force a lot.

And yes, I hate SR3 for being weaker than SR2 but I've still clocked almost 25 hours in this lousy city.

And I DO want to roll back my complaints one on thing: Genki shooter levels are some of the most fun in SR3 and the two levels in the pack DID provide some enjoyment. Everything else feels so bog standard and neutered as to not be exciting at all.

Well said.

It was not a crappy gift. My wife loved Coconut Queen.

Anyone wanna do a 4 pack for Revelations 2012?
So I drilled down the RPG offerings by metacritic and saw a game Ive never even heard of... the Longest Journey. Time frame puts me out of gaming then but Im kinda surprised I never even heard of it. Thoughts? Metacritic ballot stuffer? 91 seems too high for me to be unaware of it.
This game was awesome, especially with the underwear/bra mod for this and the sequel.

Could you say more about FF? Did you play in its general era or later on? It seems awesome but Im trying to be less "judicious" with backlog inductees.

Heh, I thought I was the only one who really didn't like SR3 and thought SR2 was better... but still has lots of fun playing SR3. :D
They're all missions from what I can tell, so are they pretty crappy as far as that goes? What makes them so terrible?

I'm honestly asking by the way, since I have it sitting in my inventory if I decide I don't really want it.
They aren't terrible, this guy is constantly whining about how bad the season pass is. It's fine for about $6-7, the quality of the missions is no worse than the main missions in the game. He is exaggerating.
Which is the best STALKER game?

I have Clear Sky already. I played Shadows of Chernobyl back in the day, but I remember running into a lot of glitches, partially because of the game, partially because my computer wasn't very good back then.

Are Shadows of Chernobyl or Call of Prypiat considered the best?
Answering this very late but they're the best of the three, yes. CoP is considered the cream of the crop as it's a culmination of all the improvements made to the game and the option to continue playing after the game ends. The biggest problem the first game had was as soon as you got the really sweet gear, the game ended 15 minutes later. That and it didn't have item upgrading or a lot of the graphical improvements. Play both for sure though and then check out the Complete mods to enhance them even further.

Really makes me sad STALKER 2 was canceled after GSC went under and had to rebuild the company under another name.

I know. Still, since I'm one of the odd few who generally likes DLC that adds more customization to the game as opposed to more missions, the biased input still serves it's purpose.

Basically, I'll play through most of the game before deciding whether or not to redeem the Season Pass.

If you really want action, play the first witcher. Now that game has a lot of sex, lol.

I played it later when it was $4 at Big Lots. It's basically a super hero squad real time strategy game with really, really light RPG elements. The basics of the game are just well done. I mean, hell, it's Irrational Games we're talking about. I keep waiting for them to disappoint me but they haven't.

I've always been saying that Volition makes lousy DLC from their track record with RFG, SR2, RFA, etc. Now that I have ACTUALLY played it, I can give you a review.

And I will have to agree to disagree as to their quality versus the main game.
RE: Longest Journey - It's a very well known adventure game, but not an RPG. It was a big deal back then but being PC only and done by a relatively unknown team, didn't attract as much mainstream attention as it should have - but for a while it was the last great adventure game.
Yet another game I yet to play from my backlog, but I've heard good things.

Some of the missions in the main game are huge epic blockbuster action sequences, of course these DLC missions don't measure up to those but a lot of the other missions in the main game are about the quality of these DLC missions. I don't know if you're comparing the DLC to the very best of the main game or what.

Still can't make up my mind on Stalker bundle; I heard that Clear Sky isn't good. Should I just get the original and Call of Pripyat?

Also, who started the Coconut Queen following?

Our great and powerful leader, Queen Motoki. Long live the Queen!!!!!
Only point and click adventure game I've ever played, so I'm not familiar with the genre- that said, I enjoyed it. The story was good. The heroine could be somewhat annoying, but all late teens/early twenties people are annoying to me. The only thing I disliked was the pacing, but I'd assume all adventure games have slow pacing. I played it about a year ago.
Already been answered, but I'll echo the endorsements of The Longest Journey. If you like point and click adventure games, it's one of the best. Seriously a fantastic game. Dreamfall, the sequel, is also good. But the move from pre-rendered to real-time made movement and interacting a bit clumsy, and the puzzles were watered down. It also has a notorious cliffhanger that has remained unresolved while Tornquist, the writer/director, has been working on The Secret World at Funcom for the last 6(!) years.
Also, who started the Coconut Queen following?
Our own Coconut Queen Motoki, blessed and ripe be his gents' papayas.

I imported an MCL that was ok. Racist as hell but I finished it (which is not something I'm doing nearly as much as I should these days).
Rest I don't know about. I think I reached my "games aren't porn" point when friends spent HOURS trying to ActionReplay a naked Lara Croft in the first tomb raider.

Even if I could have seen that jagged woman naked, why would I want to?

Successive gens have made the eye candy more interesting but then my predilections have far outpaced society and technology. ;)

What can I say? I was a horny adolescent teenager at the time.

Damn it... caved under the 90% discount of Railworks 3... I though I had gone over the impulse, but checking it right now, and seeing that it only had 30 minutes left... I couldn't resist anymore

I don't want to, but I have to pass on Thief. I hate getting burned on games that don't work in windows 7. The last time this happened was a sound driver issue I had with Bioshock which after troubleshooting for HOURS, still refused to work. I just hate that shit, so I can't buy it hoping it will work on windows 7.

Hmmm, so what's sadder:

1. That I am considering purchasing Coconut Queen?
2. That CQ no longer refers to Costume Quest, but to Coconut Queen?
3. That I own Revelations 2012?
4. That I actually googled the underwear/bra mod?
5. Or that Google informed me this website actually exists: videogamebuttshots.blogspot.com ?

damn had to check out #5 and add it to my sig

Just an addendum, found another new thing in Genki. Skyblazing. This one is actually decent. You fly through rings, land on rooftops to chainsaw mascots, then bounce back into the air and keep flying until the end.

So, apart from the rehashed escort and weak yarn ball stuff, I think I have had the most fun with the Genki pack

Never be surprised that you can find something on the internet.

Also, I must ask. Is your location one x short of a good time, or belonging to a prominent Hollywood actor and musician?

sounds like fun. Looking forward to playing it once Amazon gets its deal on.

On a serious note - can anyone recommend Railworks 3 Haulin USA pack for me and my boys age 2-6? They love S.M. Railroads and I thought this might be a good addition for them and hopefully im not too bored with it...

None of us have actually played. I think one person did and said it was a good train sim. A few others have chimed in and defended it too. Like for a train sim it looks pretty good and the price is right. I assume S.M. stands for something other than sado masochistic?

Thanks for responding. S.M. is for Sid Meier's Railroads - its actually a really fun RTS....

So I was considering the STALKER games but I'll pass. I've heard Clear Sky isn't that great and I just now notice it uses TAGES. I've seen the other 2 bundled together for cheaper so I'll wait it out. Not like I don't have a massive backlog or anything...
Thanks for responding. S.M. is for Sid Meier's Railroads - its actually a really fun RTS....
Well this is a straight up simulator though. No other elements I think than conducting a train. So if they love trains then go for it. If they love the game play in a Sid Meier's game then it might not be as appealling. Do they like model trains at all?

That sounds like a really good idea. Plus if you're more into customization, then Season Pass really isn't for you. Nothing carries over into the main game iirc except the Nyte Blade stuff it's bundled with.

I'm having a hard time with it myself. The sticking point for me is that the Haulin' USA bundle is by far the best, but the $3 premium over the next lowest bundle pushes out of my impulse buy zone. I feel as if I bought Deluxe I'd be missing out on a better deal.

I'm trying to hold out for a few minutes and ultimately the winter sale where it will be run all over again.

S.M. means scale models probably, I'm guessing, but you have different gauges regarding the size.

Naturally, mistakes can be made when walking into a store and asking a clerk for your best SM gear. It makes for an embarrassing trip to the returns desk later.

Beaten like a dead horse. Who knew SM also meant Sid Meier? Though this makes googling for S.M. SM S&M all the harder.

They love any train actually...
I caved in and bought it. I should at least get enjoyment out of hearing my 3 boys excitement over the game. I guess that is worth it! Thanks for the replys.
