CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

These spreadsheets are crazy. Do you all keep a spreadsheet to tell you how long you are spending updating spreadsheets?

My buying is similar to Motoki's. Not going to buy, not going to buy, OMG that is a good deal. Sometimes the CAG in me even feels obligated to buy it just based on the deal even if I know I wont play it. Other times I decide to pass but it keeps coming up in my head and i stare at the store page and say no many times and finally I get sick of thinking about it and hit buy so I dont have to.

I have a spreadsheet that keeps track of all my spreadsheets.
330 in my steam account.

C4ABA7C0D7D05AC7ECED944214F3AC13BE79F6B7

This is my spreadsheet. It shows I've spent over $1000 since 2006. That's only $125 a year. It also shows I've gotten 22 cents an hour from my gaming hobby (even though I have a huge backlog).
I track time and cost and shoot for from 30 to 50 cents an hour (below 30 cents/hr will mark 'done'). I've used this to fill in data at howlongtobeat.com. It also has a macro that will generate a web page showing all my backlog with thumbnails. I often will peruse that looking for the next game to play.
From a professional excel user, props on the spreadsheet. I think I may make my own version. Partly because I had two unused duplicate games just laying around that I thought I had used. They are up on steamgifts now but that's a little ridiculous.

For those keeping track:
220 steam games, a hand full on a couple other websites, and probably about 100 on consoles.

I just threw up in my mouth a little.

My count on steam is 190. Handful of others from amazon and GOG, plus a few (15?) on the wii and ps2. Yes, I still have a ps2 backlog.

KOTOR's a great game (I even liked the sequel - though not quite as much).
I am sure it will be on sale again somewhere.

KOTOR was a daily, flash, and community vote deal. Another sale on it for 75% off is inevitable. It's very popular.

I lol'd. These accounting nerds, man... ;) (my spreadsheet wasn't as elaborate, and I stopped keeping track at the beginning of this year)

July Jubilee bundle is on Indie Royale right now. Not sure if I want to spend over $5 for Geneforge Saga, Puzzle Agent (which I already own from some sort of bundle), and Mutant Storm Reloaded. I guess I'm only interested in Geneforge, and it'll be cheaper during the winter sale. ;)
I understand. I really don't keep up with mine as well as I should but I still love having the resource (it definitely helps you avoid buying games you already have). Also if you're one of those folks who lends games to people because you have friends in RL, it makes keeping track of that stuff easy too.
^THIS! Having my inventory of games helps so much; combined with Dropbox on my phone, its a godsend! Everytime I buy something now, I just check my list on my phone first; it saved me from many double buys now.
So Rage PC retail boxed (Steamworks) is $5.99 free shipping and not tax in most states on Newegg.

Not sure, but I bit. That price for physical copy is worth it.
For me games are generally more about the experience than the challenge. I used to be better at these games when I was younger but I don't have the patience for it now. Back then I had one game at a time so it was figure it out or nothing. Now I have 800+ other games waiting in the wings so it's not worth it to me to get too hung up on one game. If it's a difference between play on easy and beat the game or play on regular get frustrated and quit and probably never come back to it, I'll take the former.
Solidarity. :applause:
Is Darksiders worth $5? I saw it on Greenman gaming.
Absolutely. If you want a third-person brawler with a Zelda-like adventure in a post-apocalyptic setting and a great story then yes. You're one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and you battle angels and demons that need a good ass whooping... could it be much cooler?
Restraint? What is this restraint you speak of? :D

In all seriousness, I have a lot of respect for that, I just don't have the personality for it.

I'm always like notgonnagetanothergame
notgonnagetanothergame
notgonnagetanothergame
OMG THAT'S SO CHEAP!
I've had that problem in the past, but having a kid who eats up a lot of your disposable income and time helps.

I think if I had physical boxes around it would smack me in the face and I would realize the extent of it, but I don't.

Well, it still works that I have a pile of console games that I need to play, as well as my Steam pile. It also helps that I'm on another board where they talk about games they've completed, which helps push me to finish games.

FFS. So was their ever a fix for the burnout paradise key issue? Just tried to play mine and its a no go.

WOW. Looking at steam forums issue still has not been resolved.
Value is my made up number.

Since you can never sell Steam games, you can only get 'value' out of them by playing them. A better experience is more 'valuable' per hour.

I must say it is a fine way to quantify a value of a game. :applause: A triple A's game loses its value if you don't ever touch it.

Not sure, whenever I go to view my cd key. It gets stuck on requesting CD-Key so im guessing no :(

And on all the comments about backlogging. What has been working for me is playing one game at a time till I beat it. I have a bad case of gamer ADD so doing my best to stick with one one game at a time and not switching mid way through.

I agree with the fact that if you don't play a game it is just a waste of money.

However, I do not buy into the "per hour" mentality. I did when I was younger but as I get older and have less time I have trouble with it. The problem is that I don't mind a shorter game if its done well. I'd much rather have 4-6 hours of a great game then 15 with those same great segments but mixed in with an additional 10 hours of mediocrity.

I like comparing this to movies. When you go to see a movie no one says, this movie is only 90 minutes so I don't want to pay full price. Movies like games are a unit. If they can accomplish what they are trying in 90 minutes vs artificially making it longer then its better for it.

So I just got back from Mexico, and apparently I am leaving to New Mexico today. Whoa, that's a bunch of traveling. Part of me just wants to stay home and play all the games I've bought! Ughhh, first world problems.
Man the threads grown like 10 pages since I went to bed. I thought it would slow down once the sale was over. XD
I feel like it's moving slower than on the sale, but just not as slow as prior to the sale.

Funny as much as I love long epic rpg's with tons of explorations,etc..etc I have to say picking up a shorter game is much easier to fit in. Plus when you get it cheap don't have to feel like you spent 60$ on only 5 hours.

Best example: Darkness 2 Main story + Vendetta is like 6-7 hours or so but very well paced and no real lull sections.

Worst example: Alice: Madness returns. I loved the art, story, and general world that Alice was set in....But they dragged each chapter out to 4-5 hours each and with 5-6 chapters it was a utter chore to get through.

Each chapter went like this, "oh wow look at this world, that's a cool new ability, what a unique mini-game" Then the game would just repeat go find 3 keys to go through this door!..Awesome in this area go find 3 more keys to get though this bigger door, For 4 hours each and every chapter :wall:

This is why I didn't bite on Alice, even at $5. I like the art style just as I did in the original and the story certainly had potential but playing the demo on Origin, it just felt like more floaty platforming of the sort that makes me want to throw my mouse at something and/or emit a primal scream.

I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment! I have also become less concerned about the backlog and try not to view it as a mountain that needs to be conquered. I pick and choose a game here and there, hop between games, and see which ones I'm enjoying the most. There is only so much time to play, so I've become more focused on finder the more quality content rather than the quantity in the games I own.

Sure, I feel a bit silly at times getting closer to almost 300 games in the backlog, but I find it's nice to have a wide variety to choose from. It's like a big digital toybox and every once in awhile I'll pull out a hidden gem that's ridiculously fun to play with or perhaps I'll rediscover an old favorite. I know I won't play with every one of my toys, of course, as some are broken and others just aren't any fun to play with, but that's just the way it goes. If anything, the games that don't appeal to me are often times ones I can recommend to others, and it sure is a great feeling to introduce someone else to awesome things.

Since experiencing what its like to join a steam summer sale for the 1st time, im constantly visiting the steam store even though they are now only doing daily deals! sheeesh!

I think the worst offender is console JRPG, even fairly modern one. Lost Odyssey on 360 was considered very good by gamers including myself. But when I lend it to a friend of mine, he simply can't stand it. The fluff simply turned him off. Not to mention the necessary level grind if you want to tackle the last boss.

There seems to be this issue in the game industry that all new games must be sold for $60, and there is a minimum requirement that comes with a $60 game. While I agree with that, padding out content doesn't count as that minimum requirement. If you are going to have a tight gaming experience that isn't huge, don't be afraid to sell it at $40. Given that most games seem to drop quickly after release, I don't think you are losing much by doing that.

I did pick up Alice in this sale, based on a friend's recommendation and so far I like it, tho I think I'll need a controller for this one.

Here's to hoping that today's deal neither craps on people who bought during the summer sale, nor is an oversaled game like Magicka or Hydrophia.

The art of Alice: The Madness returns is really nice. I had a coupon from Darkhorse Digital a while back and used it to get a digital copy of the A:TMR artbook.

It's got a lot of interesting background info too like how most of the artists were Asian so they sometimes struggled with the very western gothic art style because they didn't have a lot of personal experience with it to refer back to, but then sometimes they came up with some really interesting stuff that the western team wouldn't have thought of.

There's also some artwork from stuff that was cut etc. Definitely an interesting (virtual) coffee table book. In fact I'd almost say skip the game and get the book.

I don't even mind if they charge $60 for a short but great experience. I think that's the problem is if they make a short game they don't think they can get $60. What I'm saying is that I'd rather pay $60 for an edited and great experience of 6 hours instead of those same 6 hours but with another 6 of fluff in-between that they didn't cut so they could keep it full price.

Ya I only played Alice with a controller and then also displayed on my TV, But ya for 5$ or on sale Alice is amazing and its a fun game. It is just one of those games that they unnecessary padded out. The beginning and end of each chapter is amazing, it is just the middle section of each chapter where things are just drawn out and add nothing to the game I felt like.
I know that actually playing your games is frowned upon here but, in all seriousness, have you guys been enjoying or regretting your purchases?

I'm loving Burnout Paradise so far. I had my first "OH, SHIT" moment when I barrel rolled on a high jump and landed right-side up on top of a car 1-level below.
Burnout Paradise is absolutely amazing. Also, since you've come to it late, you might not know it's history, but Criterion proved itself to be an amazing developer.

They released massive content patch after massive content patch for free (at least on PS3). Including, but not limited to: trophy patch once trophies became possible, 'night' patch, which allowed day/night cycle, cycle patch, which added motorcycles, and plenty more.

They also listened to the fan base, patching in stuff like allowing you to easily restart a race (rather than a more 'open world' where you ended the race whereever you were, and had to drive back... interesting, but frustrating).

They eventually charged for some DLC, but by the time they'd did that, they'd already patched in so much content for free that I was more than happy to shell over the $. Definitely a gold standard for a modern day dev.
If I clear out my backlog, what will I organize???
If I took the time that I:

1) organize games
2) read gaming news/reviews sites looking for new games
3) read sites like this looking for deals

and just played games instead...
I probably wouldn't have a backlog.

I seriously think I put more effort into 1,2, and 3 than I do actually getting around to playing them.

Hmm, not much for me today (WOT? There's not thousands of games on sale anymore?) but I am kind of eyeing the Sail Simulator 2010 over at Getgamesgo for 75% off @ $4.99.

It says it's "The ultimate realistic sailing simulator".
What happened?
Not sure. I'm just blocked from making purchases and it says to contact support. This was my first Steam sale, so maybe account security flagged my account due to the sudden influx of charges on an otherwise idle account.

Of course it won't be 75% off during the winter sale. It will hit that price point as the daily deal immediately after the winter sale ends.
