CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
No need anymore to find the code in the manual to actually be able to play The Simpsons Arcade game (On Floppy) on the PC.
I remember back in the days of yore where the code would be "the 6th word of the 2nd sentence in the 4rd paragraph of page 5 in the manual". But what ends up happening is pirated copies would include a xeroxed copy of the manual.

LOL, what is the Mother-in-Law technology? :D

Then again we are talking about the Japanese here, people who used to throw away Anime cells once they were done with them because they thought they were worthless and who made FFVII then threw out the background artwork when they were done so the PC version had to use horribly pixelated blown up (90s) console resolution instead of being able to just rescan the original artwork at a higher resolution.

Anyway, I have a feeling we are just going to go around and around on this :boxing: so lets agree to disagree. :p
I did not know that, I guess why every Japanese game even sequels seem to have new assets and design, also why they must take like 5-6 years to make a sequel to any game. Unless it is Pokemon

And sounds good to me :grouphug: We can get back to what is important like niche unknown games such as Airport Firefighter Simulator.

You know, I've often though to myself, Self, there are airport simulators and firefighter simulators but why are there no airport firefighter simulators?

I am glad someone finally stepped up to fill this gaping genre void among video games. It is about time someone actually caters to all the airport firefighter fans out there.
probably just really, really slow internet?
Yeah it's around 14-15 gigs or so total. It's a combination of slow internet (200kb DL), and the fact that I only like to download stuff over night since I'm usually online or playing games in the day and don't like to deal with the slowdown from downloading. So I guess it was more like 3-4 nights.

The strangest thing is, if you want a simulator apparently Europe has it, even a Bau simulator what ever that is. I just want to know who is buying all these simulators! Who is sitting at home thinking to themselves, "Man if only I could get a Airport Janitor Simulator, life would be awesome"

I guess once you make one simulator, you can make others very cheaply by just changing the models. So they don't need to sell much to gain a profit.
Now before you go with the sob story about how such a poor tiny developer can't afford to do Steamworks blah blah :-({|= Signal Studios are really small and are adding Steamworks in as an alternative to GFWL for Toy Soldiers, a little ass indie game, due to popular demand.
Didn't they completely remove the multiplayer from that game when putting it on PC? I'm not sure using it is a good example, then. That's one of the advantages of using GFWL with a port.

That makes sense in a evil sort of way, "Well, why don't we just take that concrete truck add in a different sand pit and the streets and city from Delivery Truck Simulator and call it "Concrete Truck Simulator! :applause:" I am surprised EA hasn't gotten in on this business.
I think Game of the Year stopped mean Game of the Year a long time ago. It pretty much just means 'With all the DLC and/or expansions'* at this point.

Until the "complete" version comes out: any gold, platimum, GOTY, etc version of a CIV game is not the definitive version.

Bioware's Neverwinter Nights is a good example of "don't think Gold is it". I bought Gold with Shadows of Undertide and then there was a new expansion Hordes of the Underdark then they released "Platinum" with Shadows and Hordes. After that a pack of modules came out called "Kingmaker" and finally the definitive "Diamond" version.
Yes, I still remember when the GOTY Uncharted 2 box art was released it was terrible.
Those symbols aren't for us. They're there to help casuals and the younger generation who say "fuck this shit" when they get frustrated because they don't know the controls.
It seems to be pretty buggy right now. The store page says you get a 50% off loyalty discount for owners of Dead Island, but the discount isn't showing up for me either and I own only the base game as well.

About GOTY Editions - who knows.
Usually, one publications gives out a GOTY Award to them - so, then they call it GOTY Edition. ;)
Sometimes GOTY Editions don't pack EVERYTHING...sometimes they do.
[shrug]

Ultimate Editions or Complete Editions are the final boxes w/ Base Game + ALL DLC + ALL Expansions, these days...
Well, usually... ;)

Gotta' love how confusing the game industry can be w/ all these Re-Released Boxes; Season Passes of DLC; DLC Packs; Complete Ediitons; GOTY Editions; Franchised Editions; etc etc. ;)

Starting my first steamgifts give away. Check out the sig.

I want a simulation for Paint Drying because everyone knows the virtual experience is better than real life. Imagine the color mods you can add, maybe even with some nice wallpaper to compliment.
I've had that happen before, really annoying. Although I guess in the case of lots of little transactions it makes sense. I had to call them before for a damn $15 payment to Blizzard. Pissed me off.
Never had a steam-related card freeze. Had it happen once when buying $5 of pens from staples - the fraud unit called me on the phone in less time than it took to walk from the register to my car.
However, I do not buy into the "per hour" mentality. I did when I was younger but as I get older and have less time I have trouble with it. The problem is that I don't mind a shorter game if its done well.
When you go to see a movie no one says, this movie is only 90 minutes so I don't want to pay full price.
I knew a guy ages ago that insisted on 1 hour of entertainment for every dollar spent, and I still think of that a lot, even if I don't always live by it. For games, once you 'paid' for a title, the excess hours went to paying off the cost of the system. And it absolutely did apply to movies. Cineplexes are a terrible deal, DVDs better have tons of extras, etc etc.

This makes Team Fortress 2 the best value game I've ever bought. Or the Orange Box, really, and I never played the half life portions that were re-included there. But even on LIMBO and Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, I reached the balance point, by buying them on sale.
We're not cheap ass gamers at all, we're thrifty digital hoarders. :applause:
Signed. I work with video and have loads of hard drive space, and absolutely get into the hoarding mindset with various things at different times, like ROM sets or TV shows. (Notice that the entire Atari 2600 catalog fits into one NES game, and the entire NES catalog is smaller than this week's Breaking Bad...)

Everything I've gotten has shown up very quickly, or in one case, not at all, which made winning in a long-odds raffle against hundreds or thousands of people interested in plants and/or zombies that much less exciting.

My favorite incarnation of this is seeing kids - of a pretty wide age range, actually - try to ragequit things in real life. Like a relay race or a game of tag or something. As soon as they've decided they're probably not going to win, there's a big about-face and announcement they're not playing. I kind of get where it comes from, but really. So weird.
Didn't they completely remove the multiplayer from that game when putting it on PC? I'm not sure using it is a good example, then. That's one of the advantages of using GFWL with a port.
I guess it's a fair enough point for the whole multiplayer thing. For me being someone not really interested in multiplayer getting a game I want ported to the PC is like being told someone is going to buy me lunch and then being told it is GFWL is like being handed a shit sandwich.

For me personally I would rather have no multiplayer and no GFWL but I recognize a lot of people would scream bloody murder if they did that.

Probably the ideal situation given the circumstances is to use GFWL as an optional login for multiplayer but not as a DRM per say and not force people to use it if they aren't doing the multiplayer.

Maybe that is even what they are doing because the whole thing about Greenman and Gamersgate listing it as both GFWL and Steamworks sounds very odd to me.

*Edit: So apparently the community manager at Greenmangaming said this:

http://forums.greenmangaming.com/topic/2389/?page=1#post-23604

I've been told that we will be receiving Steam keys, but even the Steam version will need to use GFWL (for online play)

Hope this helps

-James

That does make it sound like the GFWL is optional and just for multiplayer only, in which case I could certainly live with that. I just wish Bandai/From Software themselves were more clear on this point because it does effect buying decisions.

You can both simulate laying down next to the tracks and taking a nap. Start a whole union!

IMO, GFWL is barely noticeable. It automatically starts with the game, and it usually finishes signing in before the load screens are finished. I don't see why it's such a problem.
Yes I am getting actual Dolby. And to get Dolby in games you need Dolby Digital Live, not just regular Dolby. The Diamond card does both. Regular Dolby will work on pre-recorded stuff like movies but games need Dolby Digital Live which works on the fly.

I'm running the optical out to my Onkyo receiver. And I'm running on Win 7 64-bit. I have vague recollections having gotten a driver off of some site so I don't know that the one straight from the CD will work. It's been a while but I can try and do some digging and figure out where I got those drivers from.
This. I know this is a few pages but I'm a bit of an audio/videophile and my PC is actually what I call a HTGPC (Home Theater Gaming PC). I researched this issue a lot a few years ago. The problem is optical and coaxial cables only can carry a 2.0 PCM Signal. When you get 5.1 over those cables you are actually getting an encoded stream of data over the line rather than straight audio. Most game output in LPCM because historically people had analog output on each of their sets of speakers (which some may argue on a high end soundcard may give you better quality than the digital connections). In order to get 5.1 audio you need yo have something encode the linear channels into a single stream. There are a few apps that do it but the one that most people know is Dolby Digital Live like Motoki mentioned. I know the higher end creative cards have this and a few others just make sure it has that if you are looking for 5.1 over optical. The reason you get 5.1 audio off of movies/blu-ray/etc is because they are either pre-encoded with the digital encoding or the app you are using to play has a converter built in.

If you have a choice the best way to get audio on a PC now is over HDMI. this way you can get 7.1 LPCM and it isnt compressed like with DD/DTS and you aren't using processor power to encode it like with DD Live.

I actually have HDMI both out from my PC via the video card (it supports audio out too, in theory) and on the receiver since it's a fairly new model. The problem is I find that the support for HDMI audio out from the NVIDIA drivers and so forth is really flakey, at least in my experience. I run the video out via HMDI and then still just run the audio from optical and that works well for me.

I realize it's encoding and decoding and hence doing some extra work and potentially causing loss of audio quality but I can honestly say I've not noticed any frame rate drops or lesser quality audio at all. It runs fine for me with optical and sounds fine plus I've just had less problems with it.

I'm not saying people shouldn't try out HDMI if they have that option on their various hardware. By all means go ahead and try it out. HDMI and in particular HDMI audio out from a PC is still a fairly recent thing though and I don't think it's always all that well supported yet.

I'll probably try it again down the road the next time I upgrade my hardware. I don't know, maybe it's just a particular flakiness of my current combination of hardware. *shrug*

Hmm. I was using a GTX 470 and never had an issue. The only problem is windows doesnt keep a constant signal to your receiver so when a sound plays you miss the first second or so which is a bit annoying with short windows notification sounds etc but in games its no issue.

My new build has a GTX 680, which has all new drivers but I know that since the Fermi architecture they have upgraded HDMI Audio quite a bit.

Edit: Actually I did run into an issue with a few older games where I had to change my audio in windows to 2.0 to get them to launch but not sure if that is HDMI related or not.

There's a lot of truth to this. Whether or not you found the Jade Empire daily deal funny, everyone should acknowledge that this will influence people's spending habits in future sales, and not in a way that benefits Steam. They would have done far better to have a discount on a game that didn't receive any percent off in the sale. People would wonder why the rights holders didn't bother to participate in the sale if they were willing to have the discount, but getting the day to itself would probaby prove a solid strategy,
On a semi-related note, while I realize this is against everything that CAGs stand for, part of me also wants to pre-order Dark Souls in order to try to vote with my wallet that I want the Japanese to port more of their RPGs over to the PC.
I would argue that it is not at all against everything that CAG stands for. CAG is all about maximizing value, not minimizing monetary output. You put a lot of value to supporting this one right out of the gates. CAG on.
Not quite steam but there was some discussion about Planescape Torment earlier. I'm looking to play that for the first time after I finish Grimrock; I've heard the story is amazing and it's entirely possible to go through the game with little to no combat which I'd like to do. Can anyone give me any tips for this without spoiling anything?
Planescape Torment was one of my favorites back when all I used to player were Baldur's Gate-esq games. And ya, you can get alot done in the game without combat, but where is the fun in that

I've come to the conclusion you have unlimited funds.
I'll try the compatibility. I was really just posting that because I thought it was funny such a basic game is blowing up on me

Edit: Compatibility didn't fix it. It's odd, since I spent lots of gems before, opened up the island pathways and bought a few upgrades, but now every time I try to buy something new, it crashes. Fortunately, it saves the spending of the gem, so I can move forward; it's just a bit obnoxious.
Clearly you are not going advanced enough. Install Windows XP Mode, copy over your saves, and run Steam through that ;)
SR TT is awesome fun. It's even more fun with friends. We should get a CAG Night together.
That sounds like that could be some good fun! :D
I sense at least 38 nominations for Motoki as CAG community member of the Year 2012 in next year's Cheapy Awards.
Or CAG villian...
