Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V5! You can find link to past threads at the bottom of this post. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 10/28
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

To give you an idea, here's a brief analogy.

I did my first ever spinning class last night. So you're pedalling away thinking "Ha! Is this it?" and it all seems rather tame.

5 minutes later, you're aching a bit and starting to regret getting all ballsy and cranking up the resistance too high, too soon.

Then the instructor bellows at you to sprint for 30 seconds.

Your legs fail. You curse your god. But you can't quit, you don't want the shame of other people seeing that you slacked off. So you keep on pedalling, every rotation burning you a horrible, searing pain.

An indeterminate length of time passes.

Somehow you make it to the end. You're sweaty, exhausted, bewildered, and scared. And your bottom hurts.

Good luck newbies! :D

So is there going to be a Halloween sale this year? It was the 27th through the 31st last year so if there was one, it'd likely be this weekend.

Flowette - ^Lol...sounds like any other strength and conditioning I've done. easier actually. I'm sure clicking PayPal won't be as arduous haha.
There's a CAG in the trading forum selling Darksiders II Steam keys for $12. Just bought one and started downloading.
How are the Darksiders games? They're brought up alot on here but I haven't had the chance to play them. Watched some reviews and it looks pretty good.
Does Groupees do a group buy/happy hour type deal or is the cheapest way to get in on the bundle to buy as soon as it goes on sale?
They've done preorders before (where games were cheaper), and periods where you could get 1 game minimum for their Build a Bundles, but in general it doesn't really matter when or how you buy them.

For one of the Be Mine bundles, they gave out free gift bundles for anyone who purchased before a certain date, but that was a one time thing.

I had a camping trip like that once.

If there is one, I hope Silent Hill: Homecoming is offered for a reasonable price this time around. It's bad enough Steam is one of the only places one can obtain the PC version.

I know it's not a great Silent Hill, but at least it features another score by Akira Yamaoka.
How is AvP?

Obviously nobody is playing MP anymore, but I'm more interested in the campaign. Any good for $3.75?
I think it is. I've only played part of the Marine sp but if you were a fan of the Alien movies (especially) I think you'll like the game. Lots of tension in the Marine campaign and sound effects are right out of the movies. Story is eh but still feels very movie like.

Awesome!
So if you wanted all the Bioshock DLC you could get for PC right now, it's only $5, and from the reviews of Minerva's Den, it's worth every penny. So in summary:
Saying $5 is a great price doesn't sound right when we're talking about the base game being $3.75.
Weird. Bully ran without problems for me on PC back in the day (retail, $5) on my WinXP, X2-3800, 7900GT rig.

I wonder if popular verdict places the PC Port of Dark Souls worse than the PC Port of Saints Row 2.
I had much less problem w/ SR2 PC than Bully PC on my older Win XP PC.
At least, SR2 PC would actually run...
I think it's worth it, especially if you like the movies. There are a lot of small details that I like about the game, like how the sound effects for the alien screams and pulse rifle shots sound straight out of the movies.
Even the original one from 2000 did a good job with the sound. That motion detector ping gave me teh shivers.

I think I had purchased Post Mortem from the discount bin at Fry's years ago, but never got very far, because the game is supposed to send you emails while you play and also give you web pages to search for clues. I always got errors when trying to go to the pages you had to go to and never did receive the emails to advance the game along. Maybe it's patched in the Steam version though.

I think you're thing of Missing: Since January. That game was fascinating because of having to research the internet for clues and getting emails but yeah, even when the game launched it didn't work that well. Awesome atmosphere and I enjoyed it when it worked. Post Mortem is the first game in the McPherson Trilogy with Still Life 1 and 2 coming afterwards.
3: Either Anna (developer is Dreampainters), or Drawn: The Painted Tower
I doubt it would be Drawn: The Painted Tower. It never gets discounted during Steam sales, leading me to believe that the publisher isn't supporting it in any way. I ended up buying it and its sequel from Half Price Books since I gave up on Steam offering it cheaply.

Granted, it would be nice if it were in a bundle, and thus added to my Steam collection at last, but I just don't see the publisher approaching Groupees for something like this if they won't even put it on sale.

Yeah, you are definitely thinking Missing: Since January and maybe even the follow up. I have both but never finished them. Wonder if they will still work now? I would think they would not sell them if they didn't work.
Steam has 2 big sales before the end of the year right now. First is the Black Friday one that they call the Autumn Sale. It is only for 5-7 days but is good and then we have the big daddy of them all, the Holiday Sale which last 10-14 days. Starts around Dec 20th and ends a few days into the new year.
Since this is my first year of PC gaming in quite some time and I had missed out on the previous Autumn/Winter, let me ask a question. Are the prices for the Winter Sale cheaper or about the same as the Autumn Sale? While I'm sure some stuff -- especially that at 75% off -- has bottomed out, what if something, say, Skyrim was offered for $20 during Autumn. Would there be a good chance or no chance that it might hit $15 for Winter?

Well, Skyrim is just going to keep getting cheaper over time, so the winter sale might be the price you're looking for.

The older and indie games get huge drops, but they're pretty comparable year to year. When I say older, sometimes it's just a matter of months old.

and those two sales will probably be just as awful as the past 2 years.

Seriously, GamersGate will price match / beat pretty much every single one of those sales on the same day, a week or so before, or a week or so later, without taking into account the 5% back in Blue Coins or the IGN discount. You would have to be an idiot, or a fanboy, to buy on steam instead of the cheaper options (Amazon will pricematch too, they did for some of the popular deals last summer).

Not every game is steam activatable. If you can activate it on steam I will go for the cheaper price every time.

But if it doesn't activate on steam, I'd rather have it in my steam library and pay the extra dollar to have it there buying direct from steam.

I would say 75% is the lowest you'll typically see. There's only a few weeks between Black Friday and Christmas so, if you really want Skyrim on sale and it's 66% on BF, I'd just wait the couple weeks and see. Spend some quality time with your backlog.

Prices on Skyrim have been fairly stable though since I assume the game still sells well. I wouldn't expect to see it at bottomed out pricing yet but maybe I'll be proven wrong.

Best advice I can give is to wait for a price you can afford and think is fair and just embrace your decision. You can make yourself feel much more sour over $3 than $3 is worth when a game goes from 66% to 75% or another place has it a little cheaper or you could have gotten a DLC bundled for the same price. Stuff will always go on sale cheaper. Either a deeper discount or a lowered base price or in a bundle or GOTY edition or whatever. If you're not going to play it today and seeing it for a few bucks cheaper will bother you, just wait because it will be a few bucks cheaper later on.

Man, I just bought AvP on Gamestop/Impulse and it was painful. They kept saying my computer was unknown and sending me verification keys (like Steam does) except it took like six keys before it would accept it. Then it finally let's me buy the game, I have to install the app to get my key (I always uninstall it immediately each time) and the app says my computer is unknown and needs a verification key

That time it only took three keys. Then it wanted to install an updated version of the app it just installed, I said "No thanks" and grabbed my Steam key and ran like hell. Nice price on the game but, man, they sure don't make it easy.

75% is a good baseline for game purchases, unless you anticipate an MSRP drop then you can wait. For indie games, there is always the risk it might be in an indie bundle so only buy if you absolutely want to play right away.

On another note, Gamersgate is having a Killing Floor sale too and cheaper than Steam! I bought a six pack and have slots available at $3.75. PM if interested.

Totally agreed, but you shouldn't respond to trolls. "Lol obvious Steam thread? I'M GONNA POST HOW MUCH BETTER GAMERSGATE IS! Mom, come in here and watch me troll these guys!"

That said, I can't wait to see the deals Amazon puts out in the coming months. They had some awesome Steam bundles last year bundled with $5 gift certificates, and the concept had only been around for a few months. Now that it's had over a year of refinement, I'm sure we'll be buying a majority of our Steam games there. Nice to have competitive pricing options.

Yeah, when they first started the 5$ promo sale stuff last winter I shrugged it off and didn't think much of it, then a month later I was kicking myself as I was missing out on a ton of games I would have gotten for free if I'd just bought the earlier games at Amazon in the first place.

I will not be making that mistake again.

And on the comment of spending some quality time with your backlog, I wholeheartedly recommend it. I've been burning through indie games I got in bundles and shorter, older big-budget games that have been in my backlog. It's extremely satisfying, and I'm finding a few gems to boot.

Oct. 27th, I'm assuming the Halloween sale, of last year it hit $13.59, and then on Nov. 28th & Dec. 23rd it was $9.99. So I'm not buying it until it's $9.99 or less, it was $19.99 during the summer sale which was disappointing to say the least. I've been wanting this game ever since I built a 3DPC earlier this year, if I had any idea I was going to be I would have paid more attention to the steam sales last year.

I think it's a really great game, I had a lot of fun with it on the 360. I can't wait to play it again in 3D. :bouncy:

I went ahead and bought Brotherhood. I've been wanting it ever since I finished the second game. I'll wait for Revelations to hit the 5-7.50 mark before I jump on it.

A bit late to the Dishonored discussion, but... I've been playing it more this past week. I'm just over five hours of gameplay and I have just finished the first proper mission (High Overseer Campbell). I prefer to do things stealthly, non-lethal all the way (not even dogs or rats), knocking down everyone so I can later walk through the level without much worry. There's a lot of different possibilities for acessing buildings and I found it a joy to discover a different way even after I had made another decision. I can't talk about combat because I haven't engaged in one yet and have no intention of doing it in this playthrough. There's a lot of similarities to the stealth in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the side missions, and the scattered books and items, but the levels (well... the first one at least) feel like they offer more possibilities. The story though is nothing special, at all (at least so far).

All in all, very happy with my purchase.

It's published by Big Fish so I suspect they see Steam as somewhat of a competitor to them. Steam hasn't really aggressive pushed into the casual market but nonetheless they sell a lot of casual games.

Also, I don't think anything from Big Fish has made it into a bundle. I think they are more interested in getting people to sub to their monthly service and using a large library of casual games (including the Drawn series) to attract people to that.

and more hints for the Groupees bundle...

Game 1 teaser: Retro, Rpg - Blood (Desura + Steam’s Greenlight)
Game 2 teaser: It’s Cold - Arctic Circle (Steam)
Game 3 teaser: Painted Dreams - She will hurt you (Steam)
Game 4 teaser: Can’t See – Darkness (Desura)
Game 5 teaser: After Dead - Une baguette (Steam)

I'd say 3 is definitely Anna

Also a video teaser should go up today.

Yeah, seems like it'll be:

Manor of the Damned
Cryostasis
Anna
BlindSide
Post Mortem

I wonder how many of these will be Steam keys.

#5 is definitely Post Mortem. It takes place in Paris, matching the 2nd hint.

Well even better because I own the graveyard and not post Mortem.

Hmmmmm, is fox serious here? If so...2, 3 and 4 are steam; 1 is desura + on greenlight; 5 desura.

Sounds good, thanks.
Anyone else think the annual Steam "Halloween Sale" is gonna start today?
Someone claimed it wasn't. With the best two horror games already on sale (Killing Floor and L4D) it doesn't really matter. I'm thinking next week's midweek madness maybe?

Next week's midweek starts Oct 31. I would expect it to kick off a couple days before Halloween.
Edit: I'm wrong it starts the 30th, which seems more plausible.
